Embargoed

Sorry if I am putting this in the wrong place. I noticed you deleted an article I put up about the HR group embargoed. As there was not enough background information. Embargoed features fairly regularly in the Turkish Cypriot press, http://www.londragazete.com/popup.php/cat/19/news/11325/PageName/English_News And has recently been given backing by the Communications workers union in the UK. http://www.hri.org/news/cyprus/tcpr/2007/07-05-03.tcpr.html#10 Notable supporters include Baroness Lunford http://www.sarahludfordmep.org.uk/pages/campaigns.html

Surly this would qualify for the article to be reinstated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SolDrury (talkcontribs) 13:06, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Image thumbnail for A class

Hi, I had a Idea about the little Image Thumbnail for FA and GA class article's and I saw that you know a lot about this stuff. So I am hopeing you can Help me with my Idea. FA class has a barnstar and a GA class has a round stamp, but none for the "A" class article. I thought that there could be a little Thumbnail for class A article's like the others, this may help motivate some people to work harder to get there article form GA up closer to FA class, because I know for many people the Jump from GA to FA class is a big one that requires a lot of work and more knowledge of the subject and Wikipedia. I see so many people with the little FA and GA Thumbnail pic's, on there user page showing off how many articles they have worked on and such. they have become a little like the Barnstars people give one another, becoming a little like s bag of merit or some thing. I think Wikipedia most Valuable resource would be the people that edit it, more than just the people that edit one line of text, but the people that have passion for a subject and given the right positive reinforcement will become vary productive Wikipedians. So what I would like is to have a "Talk" about this with other Wikipeadia members who may have ideas or experence with some thing like this, Do you think you could help me out? Max 14:55, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Ok, no top-right stars or any thing like that. But if we expanded the Article classes to include A and B class, can we then start tracking the number of A and B class article’s? I was just thinking this because it shows how many FA Article’s there are in relation to all of Wikipedia’s Articles. Now If we could know the numbers of article’s in the different Article graded classes we could start using the numbers to track Wikipedia’s Quality Growth and completeness. Wikipedia has to be proud to have 1,745,000 article’s, But at the same time start to improving what we have By developing a better “System” of Grading that reaches all across Wikipedia pages and sections, with standard criteria that helps move Wikipedia away from rapid expansion and dissimilar criteria to a Grading system that helps make the focus on the Quality of Wikipedias work a Top Priority . I think it would also be helpful because more articles would be peer reviewed, helping to avoid the negative attention Wikipedia gets when Articles are found to be slandering a person or un-encyclopedic. The more Popular Wikipedia Becomes the more the need grows for Wikipedia to be seen as a creditable source of Knowledge. With an Expanded Article Grading System the growth of Wikipedia will be in the right Direction, no longer the massive spreading out, but focusing on Increasing the Quality. I reverted the importance drop you made to this particular article. Reason is seasonal articles are fairly important to the project, in of and as of themselves. This means all post-1950 seasons (when they have an individual article) are at least mid-class. Given that, any change to the uninteresting seasons should go to project talk, but my opinion is that they should stay at least mid-class, due to significance to WPTC (much more so than the typical low-class storm).--Nilfanion (talk) 15:48, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Titoxd: I'm done copyediting the above. I did leave a few inline comments; one of my concerns was the passive sentences to the effect that "Dvorak classifications began to be employed...". They need to start with who used them, not for fact's sake but for readability. I find the article jargony, but that would need to improved by someone familiar with "convection" and storm "organization" and such. I hope this has helped your FAC bid. –Outriggr § 02:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

When is a talk page discussion considered current on wikipedia?

I'm under the impression that as long as a discussion is still located on a talk page, and not an archive, that it is still active. Some articles get very little traffic for months at a time. Is this idea incorrect? I'd rather not have this type of conversation on wikipedia on the regular basis. It may be revealing about the people involved in the discussion, but it does distract us from contributing. Thegreatdr 06:31, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Excuse me, but where are your so-called accusations of slander? Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 07:35, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

[2]Chacor (RIP 32@VT) 14:54, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
Chacor wrote - I'd like mention here that we've pretty much tried everything with Storm05, but he hasn't improved - in fact, his writing has actually gotten worse since we've been giving him advice. Encouraging him is going to cause him to continue to write bad articles that have either no content or could have copyright issues (in fact, he was blocked a couple months ago for uploading copyvio images and asserting that they were public domain). Storm05 isn't the most civil editor around, either - he is extremely confrontational and has been warned and blocked for as much.
Perhaps slander was too strong of a word for this passage. I thought it was bad form to write about other contributors to the project like this. Despite Chacor's comments, my intent was not to pressure him away of wikipedia, just be more respectful. =( Thegreatdr 01:42, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Since the thread appears to have moved to my talk page: Indeed, "slander" was probably not the wisest choice of words, but I agree with you that it being an old thread is not an excuse. Your point is valid, and I agree with you about it. That said, don't blame yourself for his break. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 02:23, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

MediaWiki problem

I almost got transwiki working, however, I can only transwiki from my other local MediaWiki installation and not any Wikimedia project. Here's the code from my LocalSettings.php:

/**
 * List of interwiki prefixes for wikis we'll accept as sources for
 * Special:Import (for sysops). Since complete page history can be imported,
 * these should be 'trusted'.
 *
 * If a user has the 'import' permission but not the 'importupload' permission,
 * they will only be able to run imports through this transwiki interface.
 */
$wgImportSources = array('commons' => 'commons',
'wikibooks' => 'wikibooks',
'w' => 'w',
'wp1' => 'wp1');

'wp1' refers to another wiki on my localhost - however, when I try to import from Wikimedia Commons, Wikibooks, or Wikipedia (defined as 'w' in my interwiki, it says "Couldn't open import file".

what do I need to do to fix this?? Thanks, --SunStar Net talk 20:50, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Tropical Storm Jerry (1995)

The article Tropical Storm Jerry (1995) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Tropical Storm Jerry (1995) for things needed to be addressed. Merzbow 03:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Wikimania 2007?

Hi Tito, I won't be able to go to Wikimania this year - last year the conference was about 8 miles from where I was teaching, this year it's more than 8000 miles away. I don't think I can just pop out of class to go to Taiwan. The organizers would really like to have someone giving a presentation on the 1.0 project, and it seems to me that you would be the best choice - very few people know as much about the "inside" of the project. OK, so Taipei is quite a distance, but I think you'd have a great time if you can go. As for finances, I think there is a lot of financial support for people in your position, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get all of your costs covered (that's a guess, nothing more!). So PLEASE think about going!

Last year it was a fantastic place to "network" - it was like a dream come true to sit down to lunch with Anthere, Delphine, Kirill, Kelson (French WP1.0) and Tomasz (Polish WP1.0) all grouped around the same table! As you can see from that list, many people traveled thousands of miles to attend, but the contacts made have proven critical for the development of the 1.0 project.

Also, I haven't forgotten your request for more background stuff on the 1.0 project to blog about. I've been very busy over the last month, but this task has risen to near the top of my "to-do list." If there's a specific topic you want me to comment on, please let me know. Once we get MartinBotII working, I'd love to see a blog on that - I think it's very exciting, quite groundbreaking actually. You've done a great job so far - you write really well! Cheers, Walkerma 17:36, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

Review work for Version 0.7

Hi Tito, I know you're busy, but the release & subsequent press coverage of Version 0.5 is giving us some new people at the 1.0 team, including some people signing on as reviewers. As one of our few experienced reviewers still around, do you think you could help out a bit at Wikipedia:Release_Version_Nominations, and also welcome/guide our newbies? V0.7 has been in the doldrums for a long time, but this could give it the kick it needs to get going nicely - and with all the press exposure we need to make sure that it does. There's no turning back now! I'm really busy at work still, and much of my spare time is spent dealing with the PR part of things. I'd really appreciate some help, even if it's just for a few days. Thanks! Walkerma 06:22, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply on my talk page. Sorry you can't go to Taipei, but I understand, esp. as I'm teaching summer classes. Maybe we'll coax you out to the East Coast some time, at least!?
As for reviewing, I don't think anybody needs to review 500 articles. It's just critical that we have some activity. In WP I have learnt that activity breeds activity. If nothing happens for two weeks after you first sign on the Review Team or 1.0 team, you'll think, "This place is dead, I won't waste my time." And you're right, this is a critical time. I'll pitch in a bit too. Once the media frenzy dies down, and things quieten down at work (hopefully after this weekend things should get less silly), I will be able to help more. I'll have a go at writing some stuff for you this weekend. My last exam is May 18.
What do you think of User:VeblenBot/Version_0.7/MainTable? I think having separate tables for our ten categories is fantastic (click on a category to see each one). This is exactly what I wanted to see when we put categories into the template. This is all on WP 1.0 Bot's birthday, too! Meanwhile over in chemistry, a major molecule editor company is now writing Wikipedia-friendly patches, to allow us to draw a structure, then automatically generate a PNG file in Wikipedia format containing InChI as metadata. We live in exciting times! Cheers, Walkerma 05:05, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for helping out with some reviewing, I've been buried with stuff! I had a great chat with Emmanuel today, though. If your French is up to it, let me know if you fancy a trip to Paris this fall. Walkerma 04:28, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Thanks... I keep forgetting to select the license. Grandmasterka 08:14, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Titoxd. On the global warming FAR you noted the article "needs to have some sort of discussion about political and societal effects of GW." I agree with you and tried to add some myself in the last few sections; I don't think it needs a lot given all the sub-articles, but at least a nod in predictable directions. Ref formatting has also been taken care of. Do you feel it is improved wrt to 1b and 1c? Marskell 08:36, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Hola Titoxd

--Pediaknowledge 03:06, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
Atacarlos aquí no te ayudará mucho. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 03:09, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

--Pediaknowledge 01:03, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

IPA Template

I believe you closed the discussion on {{User ipa}} far too early. Others may be interested in commenting, and I certainly had responses to those comments that came after mine. Plus, the consistency argument is flawed. If it makes no sense to have an N-level for writing systems then we should delete all N-level boxes for writing systems. That it would be a lot of work is no argument against this. I've been overhauling philosophy of time and related pages for months, slowly doing research and making minor alterations. I'm sure many others have done long-term projects, as well. That's our job as editors. Postmodern Beatnik 16:56, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

re:Civility warning

Titoxd, with all due respect, you should be made aware of the innumerable amounts of incivility that Dev has shown during the debate. She has refused to accept any piece of evidence that I presented to her, she has an ageist attitude against me, she has called me immature, etc. Surely anyone would understand that both of us are guilty of incivility to an extent. The Esperanza debate has been drawn out for too long.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:44, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Last I checked, not agreeing with someone's "evidence" was not considered incivility. Nor, so far as I know, is pointing out that most 14 year olds act like the egocentric children they officially are. I respect the few who aren't immature - witness DoomsDay349 and Shreshth91 - but we don't allow 14 year olds to smoke, drink, marry, serve or vote for a reason. They aren't fully developed. To point out that a child is immature and acts like a child is hardly ageist, unless every psychologist, parent, government, and the UN are all ageist. DevAlt 19:29, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
Check the nutshell box on WP:CIVIL. It says, "Do not ignore the positions and conclusions of others." That's basically what you're doing. And, oh, what? Are you saying that the typical 17/18 year old is mature? Come on, your age group is already driving under the influence, having sex, drinking alcohol, and many other things that are illegal for their age. Do you consider that mature?--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 19:43, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Sorry you missed IRC, I can send you the transcript if you wish. Walkerma 03:12, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your work in merging and cleaning up. I also see that the sad face has reappeared just above - thanks for the explanation.
As you know, on WP no good turn gets forgotten, so...We have a minor technical problem at WP:Chem (see this and this) that you may be able to help with (if you're too busy, I understand). If you can see the solution - probably quite quick - I'd appreciate it. We have a problem with InChIs and SMILES strings being often too wide, blowing up the info box. We need these to be found by Google searches intact, so our traditional approach of sticking <br/> in the middle wrecks it. My "solution" is a show/hide, which ideally should blend in with the infobox, and be hidden by default. I attempted this using my cut-paste-don't-know-what-I'm-doing approach, and got one which does the job, but looks ugly (background doesn't match, and show is the default). You can see it at User:Walkerma/Sandbox3, and in use at User:Walkerma/Sandbox4. If there is an easy fix for this that you can see, I'd appreciate it! If not, I understand. Many thanks, once again, Walkerma 03:57, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Looks good! Thanks a lot! I'll try it in an article or two, to see if it works. I appreciate your help, the chemists aren't really familiar with this type of thing, though we do have some great template writers. Thanks. Walkerma 04:38, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Meetup

Hey, I wonder how much interest you think there might be in a Wikipedia meetup in Phoenix. --Spike Wilbury 21:39, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Regarding the above image, you removed the orphaned fair use deletion tag I applied. Your edit summary indicates that based on a discussion at WP:ANI that WP screenshots are considered free and not under fair use. I am unable to locate any such discussion using the search feature at ANI. As I understand it, the WP logo is not freely licensed and if included in an image, that would make the image non-free. Given the above noted image contains the logo, I tagged it for deletion. I know a number of WP screenshots were nominated by me as fair use orphans and subsenquently deleted. I would appreciate you pointing me to the discussions. Thanks.--User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 21:23, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

  • I acually found a discussion about the template here and assume that is what your talking about. I would suggest to you that that discussion does not suggest the image is free. I think that the "answer" is, as quoted from Christopher Parham's reply, "Images that have the globe should probably also be tagged with {{Copyright by Wikimedia}}...Whatever it is, the template used for Wikipedia screenshots should make clearer that the logo, if it appears, cannot be used freely; for now I have tried to do that simply by bolding the relevant text." - bolding mine.--User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 21:37, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
FYI - I am going to nominate it at IfD as an orphan and make mention of our discussion - please participate. You will se the notification soon.--User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 23:02, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
  • There are a number of people who are regulars at IfD - most images are not commented on, but I think it is likely this will spark a bit of discussion. --User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 23:33, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Image:Jimbo_deleted.png listed for deletion

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:Jimbo_deleted.png, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. My RfA :)

Thank you, TitoXD, for commenting on my RfA, which closed successfully with a tally of 76/0/1! I hope I will meet your expectations, and be sure I will continue trying to be a good editor as well as a good administrator :) If I may be of any assistance to you in the future (or if you see me commit some grievous error :), please drop me a line on my Talk page.

Again, thank you, and happy editing! Fvasconcellos (t·c) 17:58, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

1.0 team

Hi Tito, Sorry to see that the Tropical Cyclone article didn't make it. Sometimes I think the process can be rather arbitrary, but it's the best process we have. When I read it (or at least the first half!) I didn't see much text needing copyediting.

As usual, I have a request - could you keep an eye on things over at WP:1.0 for the next week or so? I'm going away, and I'm not sure if I'll have internet access (possibly for part of the time). I'd be very grateful if you could handle any issues that arise, and keep WP:V0.7N reviews ticking over (Funpika, Ozgod & others have been helpful with these). Hopefully MartinBotII will be able to come online soon - do you know anything about the toolserver updrade? Please let me know, Walkerma 05:12, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Since you seem to be on break yourself, I'll contact John Carter & User:Ozgod. I hope all is well with you, and that you come back refreshed. All the best, Walkerma 03:57, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi Tito, since we don't have Nilfanion around right now, I figure you're the next best guy to go to for infobox coding.

WT:WPTC#Indian_Ocean_tropical_cyclones_-_1-minute_sustained_winds - The IMD uses 3-minute winds, we need to include this in the infobox. The categorisation at the top of the infobox for the IMD would show the storm's strength on the IMD scale (2007 North Indian Ocean cyclone season), maybe with the corresponding colour in the background?

Let me know if you can do it, or if we should, as Core just suggested in IRC (and Hink just seconded) - inform him (Nilfanion) and beg him to come back from wikibreak? ;) Chacor 02:17, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Table class?

What is table class? I've never seen it anywhere else aside from Template talk:Most intense Atlantic hurricanes, and it makes the template show up in Category:Unassessed meteorology articles. -RunningOnBrains 06:44, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Can you help?

Hi Titoxd, since I noticed you were on, and because you are an admin, I was wondering if you could do something adminny for me - could you please delete the user page of User:SkyBot? Its a bot that is in progress and that I will be running, but I created the userpage for the bot before creating the account. If you could delete it, then I create the account, and then you undelete it, it would be most appreciated. Thanks! Anonymous DissidentTalk 23:43, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Check it out. SkyBot is at Special:Listusers - his userpage. I tried to create account, but it wouldnt let me, saying that account had already been created. Anonymous DissidentTalk 23:46, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks. I've decided to request usurpation. I cant tihnk of another name, and I do like SkyBot, so... Anonymous DissidentTalk 00:37, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Consolidation of powers

Hi Tito, I am unsure if you're questioning why I feel that a "separation of powers" is a good system for an organization like Wikipedia, or what I think have been problems with the system as is. For the latter, I actually think Essjay is a fine example. Would his deception have been so acute if he did not wear so many hats? Would it have upset so many people? The answer, I think, is no. If he had been just a bureaucrat, or just an ArbCom member, he would have been asked to step down, and we all probably would have gone back to editing. It's because he was one of the most trusted editors in the community, that it was such a fiasco. Why even put ourselves in the position of having a super-elite of most-trusted users? There are hundreds if not thousands of incredibly trustworthy editors at Wikipedia.

So given there are so many trusted users, why not spread it around? A system where there are lots of checks is a stabler system. Why put all our eggs in one basket, when we have so many baskets available? --JayHenry 22:55, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

You raise a lot of interesting points, particularly with respect to a rigid and a fluid system of checks and balances. But see, I don't think people should have to pick "career paths" either. First, because in my opinion, all of our careers should be as encyclopedists. Second, if a bureaucrat would like to be on ArbCom, I think that's actually great. I think rotation is important in these roles. But if elected to ArbCom, I think that user should step down as bureaucrat. Definitely I think it's good for people to move around. So third, if a user is going to burnout because they feel that they need to be a bureaucrat and an arbcom member and a checkuser at the same time? Well, frankly, I don't trust a user like that in any of those roles. (And please note, there's a difference between a user who would like to serve in multiple roles, and one who needs to in order to be happy with the project.) As for the point about the Signpost, I think it just depends on what a person would like the Signpost to be. I'd like to see it as an independent, neutral check. And yes, I think this has the potential for COI, and even if unlikely, I just don't see a need to put ourselves in that position. I'm aware my viewpoint is a minority, but hopefully it's not "baffling" even if you do happen to disagree. --JayHenry 00:19, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Curvature of the earth on latitude

The beauty of using distances in degrees latitude is that it is immune from the earth's curvature...it is always 60 nautical miles. Longitude is quite another matter. Thegreatdr 11:57, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Dubya deleted.PNG)

Thanks for uploading Image:Dubya deleted.PNG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 21:35, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
