Tool

Thank you for making the URL builder and such! I think I've got the foundation down for the graphs (take a look! :) ), but for some reason, parsing for anons doesn't work anymore, and there's something up with the graph that's not scaling the lines against resizes vertically (try the graph for me)... I'll try to fix both first thing tomorrow. :) —AySz88\^-^ 05:59, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

And *wiki-hugs* for stress; hope things get better IRL soon! :) —AySz88\^-^ 21:58, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry I couldn't finish the graphing off today; I'll try to finish it tomorrow (as I'm leaving for Central Europe the day after)... :( Hope things run smoothly with it. —AySz88\^-^ 07:05, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Count of a user's deleted edits

I think this has been asked before but is there a way to find all edits by a user in articles which have since been deleted? I have a somewhat subtle vandal who is quietly snipping out large chunks of articles and then requesting speedy deletion. When admins don't check the history correctly, the article gets deleted. I've restored two so far but only by scanning the vandal's talk page for red links (when people caught him/her in the act). Thanks!  :) —Wknight94 (talk) 22:59, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Atlantic hurricane graph

Hi Titoxd, at the science desk you mentioned Talk:2006 Atlantic hurricane season. I was thinking... I actively update and keep a graph considering the number of Atlantic hurricanes per year, since 1945 using NOAA data. Does Wikipedia need it, or is there already one? Also, I uploaded this image a while ago, but didn't know where to put it.
Probably it could be most useful at Atlantic hurricane. I'll put it there. Titoxd(?!?) 05:12, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Shelley The Republican

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shelley the Republican Hi Titoxd, have you noticed that STR seems to have re-appeared in Wikipedia? I am pretty sure that the old reasons for deleting the article are just as valid today. What short memories we all seem to have! --Salimfadhley 16:23, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

CURRENTMONTHNAMEGEN

I made this fix in several places, but I'm curious. Since there is no template or article called CURRENTMONTHNAMEGEN, what is being invoked that generates that oddball <august-gen> result? I figured out the CURRENTMONTHNAME fix, but I'm curious about what I fixed it from. Fan-1967 03:21, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Skype

Any more luck with Skype? I think I sent you an email, but don't know if it actually got there. :) -- Natalya 14:58, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry!

Was trying to revert Vandalism. I haven't figured out how to do that, apparently. My deepest apologies. Foster2008 22:00, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #3

Number 3, August 6, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list.

"Tropical Storm Lee was probably national news at the time, depending on where it went and what it did. Millions of people knew about it."

Storm of the month

Severe Tropical Storm Bilis approaching Taiwan
Severe Tropical Storm Bilis approaching Taiwan
Severe Tropical Storm Bilis was a damaging tropical storm that caused significant damage to areas of southeastern China, the Philippines and Taiwan. The fourth named storm of the 2006 Pacific typhoon season formed to the east of the Philippines on July 8 and moved towards Taiwan, strengthening as it did so. It reached its peak strength of 110 km/h (70 mph) on July 13, shortly before it made its first landfall on northern Taiwan. Bilis then made a second landfall in Fujian, China on July 14 after officials evaucated over 1 million residents from the areas in the storm's path. The remnant lasted for several days after landfall and brought heavy rain to inland China. The most significant damage occurred in Hunan, where heavy flooding and mudslides destroyed over 31,000 homes and killed 345. Despite never reaching typhoon strength, the storm was responsible for $2.5 billion in damage and at least 625 fatalities in total.

Other tropical cyclone activity

There were 10 other tropical cyclones worldwide in July, with activity in all 4 northern hemisphere basins.

  • In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall on Nantucket on July 21 before bringing rain to Atlantic Canada.
  • In the East Pacific, Hurricane Bud was a Category 3 hurricane that formed on July 10 and dissipated on July 15.
  • Hurricane Carlotta twice became a minimal hurricane before degenerating into a remnant low on July 16.
  • Hurricane Daniel reached Category 4 strength and was predicted to make landfall in Hawaii before it dissipated on July 26.
  • Tropical Storm Emilia brought tropical storm-force winds to southern Baja California on July 26 and was forecast to become a hurricane but this did not occur.
  • Tropical Storm Fabio formed late on July 31 but did not last long in the face of strong shear.
  • In the West Pacific,Typhoon Ewiniar (Ester) formed on June 29 to the east of the Philippines, it reached Category 4 strength before making landfall in South Korea on July 10 as a tropical storm. It killed at least 36 people.
  • Typhoon Kaemi (Glenda) formed on July 2 and passed over Taiwan before dissipating over mainland China on July 26. It brought heavy rain to Taiwan and the Philippines and killed at least 32 people in China.
  • Typhoon Prapiroon (Henry) formed on July 28 but did not reach tropical storm strength until August.
  • In the North Indian Ocean, Tropical Storm 03B formed on June 30 near the east Indian coast before making landfall on the Orissa coast on July 2.

Useful sources of tropical cyclone information

The following organizations provide helpful information for writing about tropical cyclones, both past and present.

In his April Tropical Cyclone Summary, Gary Padgett stated that he will extensively reference Wikipedia in his future summaries. I have communicated with him and he has stated that he is "very much interested in cooperating" with us. He has also provided me with a copy of Jack Beven's weekly summaries (covering 1991-1996). If you want a copy of them, email me.--Nilfanion (talk)

200 FARs

Your question has me totally befuddled. I said there are two of what in the Wikipedia namespace? Sorry if I'm missing something totally obvious. :) Marskell 13:05, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps you meant this Wikipedia:Featured articles with citation problems, which I moved from Disco King's namespace. It's a list of FARs with little or no citations. Marskell 14:07, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Re: Tool

Thanks for the update and for all your work! Flcelloguy (A note?) 00:56, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't have access to that tool's code, I wrote it a very long time ago. You'll have to talk to Essjay or Jude about it, they both currently have access to it. --lightdarkness (talk) 12:46, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Help me plz! Chacor put an article I wrote up for deletion because he thinks it is non-notable and has an unencyclopediac tone, even though it's the oldest currently running apple orchard in the US. Could you please give it one of your magical copyedits before August 11? I would do a little myself, but I'm trying to go on a wikibreak until mid-september. Thanks! íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 13:33, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Notability revert at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion

I didn't delete the information you reverted but I am more in favor of its deletion than its inclusion.

"Notability should not be used to argue for or against the inclusion of information on Wikipedia – instead, official guidelines and policy relating to NPOV, NOR, and Verifiability should be used. However, it is valid to use it as a guide to the placement of that information."—Wikipedia:Non-notability

"There is no official policy on notability."—Wikipedia:Notability

While both these quotes are from controversial essays, at least the second one can be said to be uncontestably true. There is no policy on notability. It should not be included in discussions of "good arguments for deletion", because many feel that it isn't a good argument.

I was surprised to find this in the Wikipedia:Notability essay as one of the "arguments for deleting non-notable articles":

There is a precedent
Many people already act on the assumption that notability is a requirement for inclusion.

Unfortunately, having notability listed as a good argument for deletion every time the topic comes up only furthers this assumption. I won't re-hash the arguments for and against notability as a requirement here; my point is that until it is a policy it shouldn't be a measure of an article's suitability for inclusion.Chidom talk  05:48, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

I did a rather major revision on the WP:AFD page to hopefully more accurately reflect the topic. I'm still in favor (obviously) of it being used as an argument as a last resort; if an article truly doesn't belong there should be other, better arguments for its deletion.Chidom talk  06:06, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey! It's me again. Just to let you know, I published that Dolly article from my sandbox today. Also, I worked on Helene today, and I think it's ready. What do you think? I just need to add metrication and categories once I start the article. Thanx. íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 20:59, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Nevermind. I'm too anxious. I'm making the article NOW. íslenska hurikein #12 (samtal) 17:13, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Cite php format

I saw on a metawiki talk page you talked about how wikipedia changed the ref formats to a ^ and letters for multiple refs. I can't find anywhere that says how to do this. I'd like to do this on the wikimedia server I run at work. The info I find says it's doable, but not much about how to do it. Can you help or point me in the right direction?Rlevse 18:27, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Someone else at work figured this out...

Set references to use ^ and letters like Wikipedia

In file Cite.i18n.php starting at about line 47,
'cite_references_link_one' => '<li id="$1">[[#$2|^]] $3</li>', 'cite_references_link_many' => '<li id="$1">^ $2 $3</li>', 'cite_references_link_many_format' => '[[#$1|<sup>$3</sup>]]',
The ^ replaces the up arrows and putting $3 in the last line between the sup /sup tags fixes the links w/ a b c... vice 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc... Rlevse 18:56, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

formatting not working

More details...so the refs work now but the dates are red because the date and year pages are not created, BUT they appear in ISO format (what I typed them in), NOT the MMM DD, YYYY date format I have my preferences set to. What is causing this?Rlevse 11:33, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

More hist merge "fun"

Hey, I've just noticed a painful copy/paste article: Subtropical Storm Nicole (2004). HurricaneCraze worked that article up at Template:X7 before copy/pasting to there... is there anything that can be done :/ --Nilfanion (talk) 21:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Indeed, that was painful. I've fixed it... for the most part. Some versions of the page will have the awful X7 header, but there's really nothing I can do about those. Titoxd(?!?) 22:48, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
For cleaning up after dozens of copy/paste moves, I award you this Working Man's Barnstar. Nilfanion (talk) 23:13, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't want to scare you but I believe Craze tends to work up articles on those template a lot... Good job doing all those hist-merges, I see its a singularly annoying job.--Nilfanion (talk) 23:13, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, another bungled page move

Could you please perform a history merge on Typhoon Saomai (2006)? I messed up the move from my userspace (User:Coredesat/Testing) and copy/pasted it. It's been a really messed up day and I didn't think to go to WP:RM. Sorry about this. :( --Coredesat talk. ^_^ 05:20, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Never mind, someone did it already. --Coredesat talk. ^_^ 09:18, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Hola! --Gaeddal 15:55, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Missed you

We missed you at the meeting this afternoon/evening - I hope all is well! You can take a look at the summary (And the full log, if you dare read its ridiculous length) at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Advisory Committee Meeting August 2006. The Skype chat is still running, so feel free to mention anything anytime. -- Natalya 05:03, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

No worries! :) As much as we like to deny it, real life does end up being rather important. It looks like that's how the Skype chat will work out, which should be good so that we can be in communication whenever. I believe you were invited into the chat, so it should show up, and you should be able to see all the old chatter. -- Natalya 14:58, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.
Signed...

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Copyvio stuff

I'm busy copying over the en.wiki TC article images to Commons. That is the permissible stuff: I'm finding a number of images uploaded by Storm05 which are falsely tagged as PD-USGov when they are non-free. List of Admins by edit count

Hey Tito,

The List of admins by edit count hasn't been updated in a few months. Your name appears on the talk page, and it appears from the comments there that you have something to do with the creation or updating of the list. Is this the case, and, if so, can we get an update (Yes, I freely admit I suffer from editcountitis)?

Happy editing! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 07:52, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your note, Tito. :) I was aware the toolserver on .en stopped working on April 11th, but recent comments seemed to indicate it was running again. However, I guess I assumed incorrectly. Sorry to have wasted your valuable time, and thanks for your swift response. Cheers! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 08:06, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Coordinating

I'm good - so far managed to stay nice and relaxed since coming back from holiday :) No, I didn't know about those sandboxes. I've started developing some standard messages that I've just kept as notes in my browser but the assigned ones looks useful with the parameters for names. I'll get you someone assigned soon - I just need to check who's the longest waiting eligible request. Petros471 10:26, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey! Thanks for signing up in Wikipedia:Esperanza's Admin coaching program. Since you've volunteered to help train a user, I've assigned Quentin Smith to you and to your partner, Jacoplane. Please make sure to be kind and helpful to your coachee. If you have any questions, let me know. Thanks again! Petros471 17:05, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
He does look rather inactive at the moment... You happy to take on a new trainee and possibly end up with two if Quentin returns? Petros471 11:08, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

There's a slight change of plans regarding publication dates of the Interwiki Report for The Wikipedia Signpost. We'd like the Spanish Interwiki Report to appear on Aug. 28th instead of Sept. 4th Could you possibly pull it off ? Please let me know ASAP.

Best regards,

Fine. Please let me know in advance if anything stands in the way of publication of the Spanish Interwiki Report on Aug. 28th Kpjas 05:20, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Propose a cleanup

Hi! re: I got this far in trying to back track how current the posts were on this project page. Do you think it would put anyone's nose out of joint to add some dates to the various announcement paragraphs and in general organize the page better for those of us that have no script knowledge and are looking at the project from the outside.
It'd be nice to see some sort of summary area suggesting the best recommended technique of each area.
In particular, what script work arounds do work with
   A) the standard MSIE6 browser
   B) Firefox (I limit myself to only short edits with that... lost too many edits)
   C) OPera, and other common browsers (?Netscape???)
Listing that way would be truly useful to know and should be spelled out on the project page clearly preferably as a section with the current consensus recommendations among what appears to be many listed, imho, for those of us without Unix based systems to rely on, and less interest or knowledge of scripts than you guru's with strong CS backrounds.

I don't really care much about editcounts, but it's been a long long while since there was a promise implicitly made to get Interiot's tool up again. I have to confess I'm a little curious as to what has built up since May! <g>

Followed you home from: here, and recalled seeing you on Interiot's page. Plz rely my talk. Suggest you link your talk in Sig with middle two letters... Advertising Esperanza is your affair, but why make people double-link-click to reach you? Is your user page really all that interesting? That would be unique! <g> (Most are pretty useless.) Best regards // FrankB 18:31, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Hola Tito. I was wondering if you could give your opinion on the name of this article on the FLC nom page. I'd like to hear a second opinion from a member of the Tropical Cyclones WikiProject. Thanks! -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 10:37, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Class creation

I experimentally created the template for "Current-Class" for current events - which are difficult to classify - but haven't added it to any articles, as I wanted you to evaluate what it looks like. (It was suggested earlier in June in the Tropical Cyclones project)

Here is an example:

Hurricanes
Hurricanes
This article is part of WikiProject Tropical cyclones, a project to systematically present information on tropical cyclones and storm seasons. If you would like to participate, you can choose to edit the article attached to this page (see Wikipedia:Contributing FAQ for more information).
Current This article has been rated as Current-Class on the assessment scale.

What do you think? CrazyC83 22:52, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Wikisort

I think it would be easier to use a bot + a script. The script would create a "rate" tab on each article and post the rating to a user subpage. The bot would look at the ratings on the user subpage and get the final rating somehow. This way, we don't have to wait for the developers to make changes to the software because the bot can be run by one user and the scripts can be posted on the scripts page. We could make the script more well known by posting it on the village pump. The bot doesn't need to be well known because only a single user has to run it. Eyu100 23:28, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Remaining work on Version 0.5

I realise that the Atlantic hurricane season is just getting going, but I wondered if you could take a look at my recent post and give me some feedback? If you have time, some comments on the rivers and the Lakes and Seas set noms. Thanks! Walkerma 05:30, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

I understand - I will probably be in the same situation a month from now! I estimate I will have to read around 1500 pieces of work this semester, around 5000 pages, much of it on carbon paper, some of it boring and/or badly written! Sounds like working on article assessment for V0.5, doesn't it! I'd value your opinion, if you have 5 minutes. Cheers, and have a good semester, Walkerma 05:41, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

IRC

Tito,

Thanks for detailed feedback, that's very helpful as I am hopeless at the tech issues. Regarding IRC, do I need to download software to do that? I'm unfamiliar with IRC, though I saw them use it at Wikimania. Cheers, Walkerma 01:02, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Urgent: Spanish Interwiki Report for the Signpost

Hi,

Could you please complete the Report ? The publication date is tomorrow. Please let me know if you can't make it for tomorrow's deadline. Please treat it as an urgent matter. Kpjas 07:57, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

The Report is going to be published any minute now. Kpjas 16:03, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello,
Yes, I'm involved in the Polish Wiki DVD project; I was actually told that the meeting of the Static content subcommittee was going to take place next weekend (see Special projects committee#SPC Public Meeting 2). Before I ask others to participate, let's clear up the confusion -- is the meeting mentioned on meta the one you mean or do we organise a separate one?
tsca @ 15:16, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

OK. I'll notify the members of the dvd-team as soon as we agree on when we meet. Some of them are definitely going to want to attend. tsca @ 15:50, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Article quality

Rock on, thanks for the link. I will attempt to follow the instructions now. --Fang Aili talk 16:24, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Could you help me at Template:WikiProject Figure Skating? I tried to add {{subst:class parameter|category=Figure skating articles by quality}} and it didn't work. Maybe I put it in the wrong place. --Fang Aili talk 16:39, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your work on this! --Fang Aili talk 13:42, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Is there a way to put in the importance too? --Fang Aili talk 13:49, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
I hate to bug you about this again, but I'm stuck. I'd love to add the importance bit, plus the ability to add comments, which then would be picked up at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Figure skating articles by quality. I have been staring at various examples' code but I'm lost. I'd like it to look like {{WPBiography}}'s, but all I need are the quality, importance, and comments, not all those other fields. Could you help again, please? --Fang Aili talk 18:44, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Could you help me again, Titoxd? Could you change the code so that only "Top" importance articles appear as such, and all other levels are hidden? I believe the biography or album templates do that, but I'm not sure how to replicate it. --Fang Aili talk 18:39, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Move request

Could you move User:Hurricanehink/Sandbox to Tropical Storm Chris (2006)? Thanks in advance. Hurricanehink (talk) 17:21, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey, this is a really useful thing Tito :). However, it seems to be causing problems in several locations (with formatting). The portal and newsletter page are both distorted badly by it and perhaps others too. A bit of JS Voodoo should do the job I suppose for the newsletter, but I would much rather see a good solution for the Portal, a redesign? One thing, I don't think the archive pages should be included in the navigation bar, as they are not of as much benefit to users. The archive for the newsletter in particular will get rapidly out of hand (2 pages a month?), a internal archive linking for the newsletter seems more appropriate. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nilfanion (talkcontribs) 06:42, 29 August 2006 (UTC).

Well, feel free to make any changes - that was just the first hack. I really wanted to keep the archives centralized in one place, though, because I saw archive headers that contained links to one archive, and others that contained to four, and then a few others that contained seven. Titoxd(?!?) 06:42, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Well yeah, I can see the point. And for a first hack it isn't bad at all. However, I think the archive function should be seperated from the main navigation points, they are not of as direct use. A second one like /Archives maybe? As for the formatting you know what I've been up to lately on Commons - do you really think I'm feeling at all creative at the moment? :P--Nilfanion (talk) 18:52, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #4

Number 4, September 3, 2006

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. The WikiProject now has its own IRC channel.

Storm of the month

Typhoon Saomai nearing its landfall in China
Typhoon Saomai nearing its landfall in China

Typhoon Saomai (known as Typhoon Juan to PAGASA) claimed at least 441 lives and caused over $1.5 billion in damage. After forming on August 4 near Chuuk, the storm brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Marianas, the Philippines, Taiwan and southeastern China. It started to intensify, and reached its official peak with winds of 95 knots (175 km/h, 110 mph) on August 9. The JTWC reported that it peaked as a Category 5 super typhoon the same day, a strength Chinese forecasters described as the most powerful to hit China in 50 years. Saomai maintained that strength until landfall on August 10 and dissipated inland the next day.

Other tropical cyclone activity

There were 16 other tropical cyclones during August, in the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

  • In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Chris moved to the north of Puerto Rico before dissipating on August 5 near Cuba.
  • Tropical Storm Debby formed near the Cape Verde islands on August 21 but had no effects on land.
  • Hurricane Ernesto formed in the Caribbean on August 24 and affected Haiti and Cuba, before making landfalls in Florida and South Carolina. It killed at least 5 people.
  • In the east Pacific, Tropical Storm Fabio dissipated on August 3 well away from land.
  • Tropical Storm Gilma formed on August 1 and lasted for two days before dissipating.
  • Hurricane Hector reached its peak as a Category 2 hurricane on August 18 well away from land.
  • Hurricane Ileana became the second major hurricane of the east Pacific season when it reached Category 3 intensity on August 23.
  • Hurricane John formed near to Mexico on August 28 and to the northwest near the coast. It prompted a series of warnings from Michoacán to Baja California Sur, where it made landfall in September.
  • Hurricane Kristy was briefly a hurricane on August 31, but its proximity to Hurricane John caused it to weaken soon after.
  • Hurricane Ioke became the most intense Central Pacific hurricane on record on August 26 with a minimum pressure of 920 mbar. After crossing the dateline and becoming Typhoon Ioke it passed just to the north of Wake Island at Category 4 strength.
  • Typhoon Prapiroon (Henry) reached its peak as a minimal typhoon in the South China Sea. It killed 77 people when it made landfall in China.
  • Severe Tropical Storm Maria formed on August 4 and threatened Japanese coast.
  • Severe Tropical Storm Bopha (Inday) passed over Taiwan as a tropical storm on August 9.
  • Tropical Storm Wukong passed over Kyūshū on August 18.
  • Tropical Storm Sonamu (Katring) was a minimal storm that was absorbed by Wukong on August 20.
  • Tropical Depression 13W formed near Hainan on August 23 and soon made landfall in Guandong.

Tropical cyclone imagery

When uploading an image of a tropical cyclone please

  1. Download the highest resolution image possible to your computer, not a thumbnail.
  2. If the image is free, upload it to Commons. In general, only upload to en.wikipedia if it is a Fair Use image. Wherever you upload, follow the instructions.
  3. Preferably, include a link to the source image, not just the source site.
  4. If you upload to Commons, add relevant Categories to the image, see the Commons category scheme. Make sure at least one category you add is the storm's category.

The following is a good image description:

Completing Version 0.5 reviews

Hi Tito, thank you so much for everything you've done so far on Version 0.5! We've made it over 1000 articles! Now we only have about four weeks left to review articles for Wikipedia:Version 0.5. I was wondering if you could take a look at Wikipedia:Version_0.5/To_do and sign up for something? I'd like us to make sure we don't miss anything important. And once the end of the month rolls around we can take a well-deserved break...! I know you're busy, but any help you can give would be most welcome. Hope to talk with you further on IRC next Sunday at 4pm EST. Thanks, Walkerma 21:22, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

--Taichi 16:08, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
