An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

You recently gave me a warning over putting up a deletion message on the user Splash's user page. This was merely a test to see how it works, and please do not hold it against me in the future. Wikipediology Elections

Voting for the positon of Regent Ñ will begin on February 5th at the voting page. All candidates should list themselves there before then. Please take the time to vote, and become more active in the Wikipediology Institute. Thanks - Pureblade | Θ 04:44, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey there....

Congratulations, Titoxd/Archive10! Your user page has been nominated for the Esperanza User Page Award! Five judges will look over your user page and award it 1-10 points in four categories:

  • Attractiveness: general layout, considering colour scheme and/or use of tables if applicable
  • Usefulness: links to subpages or editing aids, helpful information
  • Interesting-ness: quirky, unique, captivating, or funny content
  • General niceness: at the judges' discretion

But first, you must be chosen as a finalist. If your user page is chosen as one of the five finalists, you'll have the chance to win an award created just for having a great user page!

More information can be found on this page.

KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 19:46, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Hey Tito, sorry to see that you removed your userpage. We had already sent the judges 3 random user pages to look over....you doing that has put us on the spot :-D. Do you mind if I put your page back up and strike it out instead of removing it? Thanks KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 21:11, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Tito! I remember you saying on IRC you wouldn't want it nominated....I think it was Phaedriel who nominated you...I had hoped that you had the issues you had with your userpage resolved by the time this officially started. I wanted you to be nominated and others felt you should have been as well. You do have a great user page! <Cough> :-P KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 21:20, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for voting on the FAC page for History of Miami, Florida. The first image problem about Hurricane Andrew has been fixed, and the other image has been removed. Could you please comment on the article/reconsider your vote? Thanks, AndyZ 20:22, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Re: Edit counter

Great work! I finally had some spare time today, popped in my Java IDE/JDK CD, and copied all the source code at the project page. Great work! It's going to take me some time to look through all the progress that has been made. By the way, at here I see you're using maps to sort the contribs - could you expand on that a little furthur? (Videlicet, I'm having a bit of trouble following that code right now.) Secondly, I note that User:Flcelloguy/Tool/Help (the link that you added for help) hasn't been created yet; would you like me to write it at a subpage of the Wikiproject? Finally, I was looking through the code and thinking it would be easy to add a scan for certain key words - perhaps inputted by the user, or in a provided text file, to scan edit summaries. (In other words, a user interested could see if another user ever had any profanities in the edit summary, etc.) I added the link to the menu in the MainGUI fine, but couldn't figure out where the actual code for that would go. Would you mind helping me on that? Thanks a lot! Flcelloguy (A note?) 20:05, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

P.S. I'll archive soon, I promise...

Thanks for the reply! I'll see what I can do. Flcelloguy (A note?) 22:30, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the notice. By the way, I presume you're running Java 1.5 already? I tried running it on an alternate computer, which has 1.4.2 (the previous version), I got several compiler errors. Perhaps this should be mentioned somewhere? Thanks! Flcelloguy (A note?) 23:20, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Hey Tito I signed up to be a coach, I'm just curious to know if there is a sub page somewhere with tips or guidelines for the coaches? Or a page with a little more information on the program itself? KnowledgeOfSelf | talk 23:10, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

reponse: whidden hall

Look, if you even looked at WHY it was tagged for deletion, it was done by an unknown reason, most likely vandalism. Whidden Hall is a genuine residence hall at McMaster University. 24.57.131.18 04:37, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

One more thing, you remove your comment from my talk page, you accusing me of vandalism? What bloody joke!
See the AFD entry for Whidden Hall for more information. If you believe it has been incorrectly tagged, express that opinion on the Articles for Deletion page. --lightdarkness 04:39, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
Btw, If you haven't noticed, user: Ardenn is placing the AFD deletion tag on most legitimate articles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2006_February_4#Whidden_Hall User:Adrenn is the vandal. 24.57.131.18 04:52, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I've noticed. However, the editors who frequent AFD will flush out any bad nominations. Titoxd(?!? - help us) 04:54, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for noticing. But I think it was a bit harsh for you to label me as a vandal and since I "can't" remove your comments in my discussion page. 24.57.131.18 05:17, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Okay, this is perhaps a bit overdue, but thank-you for your support in my recent RfA! I passed with a final vote count consensus of (82/1/0), which was a lot of support that I really appreciate. I'll try to live up to the expectations; and on that note, if there's ever something I do wrong (or don't do right), please spit in my general direction. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama(spit) 05:31, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Template move

I think Template:Infobox hurricane season full should be moved to Template:Infobox hurricane season. Because of a complex series of editing, the two templates were split apart but have since been merged again. The latter is currently a redirect (but is the template used everywhere). Can you make this move (old edits of the regular template could be archived by moving it out of the way somewhere)? — jdorje (talk) 20:51, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tito!

Hi! Sorry about the belated reply - as you may have seen, I was dealing with quite a heavy week at work, and in the last days I was only able to make a few minor edits. I saw you withdrew the nomination of your userpage for the Esperanza award, and I completely respect that. Imho, you're too humble - your userpage rocks! But of course, I'll let you be the judge of that ;) Kisses! Phædriel tell me - 01:10, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

You might want to re-check the Negroponte article...

I see that you were the Administrator who (absolutely correctly IMHO) put the NPOV tag on the John Negroponte article. Shortly after you did that, it was removed by someone else, and additional edits (all negative, of course) made to the page. Frankly, I have no personal opinion about Negroponte, but I sure can tell a completely biased article when I see one. As a regular Wikipedia user, I honestly have no idea what to do about this, and feel quite powerless. 95% of that article (indeed, every single thing except for about a paragraph of biographcial facts) has obviously been written by a small cadre of people who have a deep, passionate animus against the man. To read it, any neutral third party would come away convinced that this guy is Hitler's cousin, with no redeeming attributes whatsoever.

But a simple reality check would tell you that a guy doesn't get appointed as Ambassador to the UN, our first Ambassador to postwar Iraq, and then DIrector of National Intelligence, all with overwhelming support from BOTH sides of the political aisle, if he is the devil incarnate. The problem, of course, is that a few activists with keyboards are using the bully puplit of Wikipedia to make their case, and no objective, disininterested expert (let alone a 'supporter' of his) happens to want to take the time to correct the record (or add enough 'positive' stuff to balance out the article.)

As I understand it, Wikipedia is not a courtroom or a debate tournament, where one side can win by default just because the other one doesn't show up. It is, instead, trying to make its reputation by channeling the 'wisdom of the crowd'. So what is a crowd member to do who is neither a Negroponte partisan, nor has the specific knowledge to 'fight back' on the subject's behalf? I'm outraged not for Negroponte, but for what things like this do to Wikipedia. I've just been in too many discussions with stodgy academics and parents and experts who dismiss Wikipedia out of hand (or ban their students from referencing it), and all they have to do is point to an article like this. Any poor high school kid who turned in a school paper based on that entry would get an F!

Aside from making comments in the page's history, and telling an administrator (you), both of which I've done, what else can someone with only common sense and a guiding light of objectivity do? If I sound somewhat anguished here, it's because I think I've stumbled across one of the dark secrets of Wilkipedia: this whole 'openess', 'crowd-editing' paradigm only works when you have antagonists on both sides of an issue canceling each other out. If there's only one partisan, the system seems to have no way to compensate...and the result of that is a platform that will never be taken seriously by the mainstream [sigh]. Maybe I should sign up for Esperanza as a Stressed User? — Yorker 04:37, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

(Edit conflict X2) I've made a short comment on the talk page of this article, and replaced the {{npov}} tag. I'll also be watching this article a bit more closely, but probably not for at least another five days! Something much more important, though: your talk page is now a screen and a half wide? I'm using IE 6.0 (under duress!) with my screen at 1024X768. - brenneman(t)(c) 01:01, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Could use your help; seems Image:Lock-icon.jpg (originally uploaded by Cantus (talk · contribs)) is a copyvio now (he originally licensed it as GFDL but recently had a change of heart it seems). Ergo my derived image, Image:Lock-icon.png is also a copyvio. This is used on a number of templates (mostly protection-related) as well as some MediaWiki messages. Another user has found a free/GFDL SVG image that looks pretty nice and should work fine, that image is Image:Padlock.svg. As an admin is necessary to make some of these changes, I was hoping you could do it (even if we ultimately use a different image; moving to something not a copyvio would be helpful). See User talk:Guanaco for some discussion of the image history and the situation re: Cantus. —Locke Coletc 06:35, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for helping me get everything worked out on the IRC - as I'm sure you could tell, I'm not too familiar with it, so I appreciate it. The Counter Vandalism Unit IRC is impressive! Archiving of mfds

I notice you moved a lot of closed deltions off mfd. My understanding is those deletion debates which are closed early are to remain on the page until the 8 days is up, per deletion policy: the debate should be closed, but remain transcluded on the appropiate deletion page. Appreciate your thoughts. Steve block talk 22:14, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

If that's what you want to do, that's your call. I'm not going to undo it, I've just spent an hour closing stuff there and archiving it myself. I tend to archive when I close if older than 8 days, otherwise I leave it in the closed section until the 8 days are up because that's the way I've read deletion policy. Participant alert regarding Wikiproject on Advertising

The Wikiproject No Ads, created as a backlash against the Answers.com deal, has served an important function in providing a space for users to express their disagreement with the Foundation proposal. While the current controversies about userboxes raise questions about political and social advocacy on Wikipedia, there should be greater flexibility regarding advocacy about Wikipedia in the Wikipedia namespace. Reported and linked by Slashdot and other press sources as a unique and spontaneous occurence in Wikipedia history, it has apparently had some impact as, despite being scheduled to begin in January, not a peep has been heard about the trial and proposed sponsored link since the deal's controversial announcement months ago. Currently, however, there is an attempt to delete the project or move it off Wikipedia altogether. Since the Foundation has provided no additional information and has not attempted to answer the specific questions that participants in the project raised, it is unclear if the Answers.com deal has been abandoned or simply delayed. Until the situation becomes more clear, I believe the group should still have a place in the Wikipedia namespace. Sincerely, Tfine80 00:28, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Titoxd,

Should we block indefinitely every IP used by that all-caps vandal on his recent binges? Are they all proxies? (I'm still not quite sure how to tell if an IP is an open proxy or not, other than by googling the IP and seeing if it shows up listed as one--do you know a way?) I knew I'd be being watched... but I didn't think it would be that close an observation scheme! - brenneman{T}{L} 23:24, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
