Add opus, mpg, and mpeg as accepted formats

I re-copied the .js code of the Wizard into my sandbox and then added "opus", "mpg", and "mpeg". I hope the Wizard accepts these formats, which are included in Special:Upload. When done, please re-delete the sandbox page. BTW, are "mpg" and "mpeg" the same or different? --George Ho (talk) 08:09, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Not done for now, at least; "video/mpg" is not a valid MIME type that I know of (could be wrong, though). To answer your question, I *think* they are two different file extensions that represent the same file type. Writ Keeper  16:23, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
If I'm reading correctly, I think what needs to be changed for this edit request is audio/opus,video/mpg,video/mpeg should be changed to just audio/opus,video/mpeg for line 101, and then "mpg"  : "video/mpg", should be "mpg"  : "video/mpeg", on line 1865. Does that look right? Writ Keeper  16:31, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Eliminated video/mpg, left video/mpeg remaining. If done, then please re-delete the sandbox version. --George Ho (talk) 19:17, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Okay,  Done, minus a few stray commas. Writ Keeper  19:21, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. Now "opus", "mpg", and "mpeg" should be listed as part of "Permitted file types". --George Ho (talk) 19:51, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Accept wav and flac

I was initially reluctant to request adding WAV and FLAC as accepted formats due to their huge sizes and being lossless or uncompressed. However, in one village pump discussion, many (or several) editors approved WAV and FLAC as NFCC-compliant formats. I re-copied the whole source and then added wav and flac. If no one minds, those formats can be added as accepted formats. --George Ho (talk) 09:03, 5 March 2022 (UTC) George Ho (talk) 09:03, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Almost forgot, please re-delete my sandbox version when the request is completely accepted or rejected. --George Ho (talk) 09:05, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Still Experimental?

Hi folks. Some pages (e.g. Template:Non-free use rationale 2) refer to this upload wizard as experimental, but I suspect it no longer is so. Can I remove references to this being "experimental" from template documentation? Protonk (talk) 20:18, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia:File Upload WizardWikipedia:File upload wizard – I don't see any reason for this to be capitalised. This would also be consistent with Wikipedia:Article wizard and most other projectspace pages. Tol (talk | contribs) @ 23:43, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

Proposed edit to prose on "historical portrait of a person no longer alive" rationale

As discussed elsewhere, I propose changing the prose below for clarity:

current: "We will typically not use a file if its owner has a potential commercial interest in its use, and if our use of it would compete with its original market role."

proposed: "We will not use a file if its owner has a commercial interest in its use (e.g., Corbis, Gettys, or any stock image agency), and if our use of it, even at lower resolution, competes with its original market role".

It seems like any Gettys image won't be permitted, so we might as well be direct about it. Reagle (talk) 20:15, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

Agreed. A lot of the people using the file upload wizard will be new users and may not be familiar with Wikipedia's rules regarding copyright. It should be spelled out as plainly as possible that images from sources such as Getty and AP will be removed The Midnite Wolf (talk) 06:45, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

I'm on mobile in Samsung internet browser when i click to upload a non-free file it just reloads the the same page Gerçois (talk) 12:05, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Yes, unfortunately the wizard doesn't work on mobile. We should really create an alternative mobile-friendly interface some time (but I haven't had any time nor know-how to do that). Fut.Perf. 12:55, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

Relative size and appearance of the buttons

Currently, the button for uploading free files to Commons is much larger and more eye-catching than the button for uploading non-free files locally. I think this format is confusing for new users, who may only notice the first button and use it regardless of whether the image they want to upload is free or non-free. The effect of this format is to nudge users towards uploading to Commons rather than locally, even if the image is non-free and thus inappropriate for Commons. This is likely part of why so many non-free images are uploaded to Commons with invalid or inapplicable license templates.

I think we should change the formatting so that the buttons are more similar in size and appearance, so uploaders will be more likely to choose which upload process to use based on the actual status of the image they want to upload, not based on which button is more eye-catching. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 14:56, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

It's been over a week with no objections, so I'm making this an edit request. Please change the text

<div style="text-align:center;">{{Clickable button 2|commons:Special:UploadWizard|Upload your own or a freely licensed file|class=mw-ui-progressive|style=border-radius:4px; font-size:2.5em;}}

to

<div style="text-align:center;">{{Clickable button 2|commons:Special:UploadWizard|Upload your own or a freely licensed file|class=mw-ui-progressive|style=border-radius:4px; font-size:1.5em;}}

The differences are (a) changing font-size:2.5em to font-size:1.5em in the first button, (b) adding class=mw-ui-progressive| to the second button, and (c) removing color:#36c; from the second button. The difference is changing font-size:2.5em to font-size:1.5em. Thank you! —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 13:53, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

@Mx. Granger, the prioritization of the Commons button was intentional, given that most new photos should go there. But on reflection, I agree that we should perhaps dial it back a bit. Wikimedia's Design Guidelines say that we should not have more than one primary action (blue-background) button, but I'd support equalizing the size. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 15:51, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing out the design guidelines. Obviously we want to prioritize Commons for free files, but we shouldn't prioritize it for non-free files as that leads to copyright violations. I've updated the edit request per your suggestion. —Mx. Granger (talk · contribs) 16:08, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Not done for now: That doesn't jive with the rest of the only use of the year 1926:
It was '''first published outside the US''', and it was in the Public Domain in its country of origin by the "<span class="fuwOutLink">[[Uruguay Round Agreements Act|URAA date]]</span>".<br/><small>For most countries, this means the author died 70 years before 1 January 1996, i.e. before 1926. Drag & drop functionality for uploading non-free files

Currently, the button for uploading non-free files to requires manually clicking it and choosing a file from your computer, unlike the button for uploading free files to Commons, which does support dragging & dropping files. I think adding this feature would make it more convenient to use the file upload wizard. I am not an ip address (talk) 22:15, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

New description not saved when overwriting a file

When uploading a file with the same name as an existing file, and choosing the option "Yes, I want to overwrite the existing file, and I will use this wizard to add a new description and new source information for it", the new description and other information you provide is not saved. The file is still uploaded, and everything looks fine, but your input is lost.

There's an error message in the browser console: Syntax error, unrecognized expression: #TargetForm .[name="text"]. WMF error logging indicates that this affected at least 8 upload attempts in the last 90 days [1] (this link requires NDA, sorry), older data isn't available.

To fix it, please replace:

                  text : ($('#TargetForm .[name="text"]')[0]).value

With:

                  text : ($('#TargetForm [name="text"]')[0]).value

The mistake was introduced in 2012 in this edit: [2] but the code worked until the jQuery 1.8 upgrade later that year [3]. Afterwards the same problem was corrected in this script in other places [4] [5], but as this feature is used more rarely, it slipped through.

I couldn't find any bug report about this anywhere, and it has been broken for over 10 years, so… maybe also consider whether this feature is really required? Matma Rex talk 19:08, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

 Donexaosflux Talk 01:35, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

Use AJAX instead of <iframe> in the script

The use of <iframe> in this script requires Wikipedia to use a certain less secure configuration (see T131183 for details). We no longer support old web browsers that required this approach (the script does not even load). I have prepared a new version that uses AJAX instead: User:Matma Rex/MediaWiki:FileUploadWizard.js.

It's a larger change, so before I put an {{Edit fully-protected}} here, it'd be good for someone to review it: compare changes. Thanks. Matma Rex talk 20:12, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
