Frustration

The wizard is a far easier way to upload the non-free logo of a new or remaned school. But I have a chicken and egg type frustration. I build a page in a user sandbox, get it right and then create the article to host it and transfer the text. At some stage in the procedings I download the logo to my desktop and will have to then use the upload wizard to upload the logo to the infobox. Here we have the chicken that is still in the sandbox, and the egg that needs to be uploaded- yes I have worked out that you have to create the chicken first but I can forget. The secret of good software is that it copes well with the task, and also prevents idiots from hurting themselves.

The wizard allows me enter the filename (of the non-existent chicken) and all the other necessary fields and gets to the bottom of the page- and stops me from uploading the egg as it must. Here it goes wrong. I go and create the chicken, and return to this page- it still wont let me upload, I refresh the page. All the data in those fields are lost. This is frustrating and unnecessary. The check comes too late, the message is on the wrong spot on the page and refreshing is counter intuitive.

Better would be to ask the user to browse for the chicken so a page has to be entered. A staic warning could be flagged "Please check that this file exist- or data will be lost", js could catch the refresh and run the page again catching the existance of the new chicken before defaulting to wiping the fields.--ClemRutter (talk) 15:44, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

Can't edit "Author or copyright owner" field

This wizard and template seem to work fine for the most part, I used it with this page. However, I am unable to edit the "Author or copyright owner" field, at least, not in the same way I did the other fields. Any idea what's going on here?

Also, as an aside: the old Non-free media information template had a field for "Portion used", is there a reason this has been left out of this new template or was it by mistake? Just something I noticed while using this wizard. Ian of Planet Earth (talk) 20:43, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

Edit Request 2019-11-19 - Fix Lint Errors

There are many non-Linter changes proposed between the sandbox and the live page. Why, for example, is the |style="" code removed? Why is "cover or dustjacket" changed to "titlepage"? Why are br tags modified? I am happy to make necessary changes, but please limit the changes only to Linter-related changes for this edit. Thanks for fixing the linterrors. I have added two revisions in the sandbox now, one which remove som extra closing tags that should not be there. The other one is removing the unneeded style=""|. The lint errors were fixed in an older revision by Anomalocaris (talk · contribs) before "titlepage" was changed to "cover or dustjacket". Sorry for not noticing. Huge issue, need to fix this upload form!

I did NOT click any Upload button!! I did not mean to upload the image Barbara-Lazaroff_by-John-Hanwell_600 × 901.jpg! I clicked the option to have it go to Wikipedia ONLY and was looking for how to NOT HAVE IT GO TO ANY WIKI COMMONS LICENSE, and suddenly is said uploading. I cannot find an image removal option and want to edit this licence. (Sorry but I am not a fan of fully open licenses - for the protection of any person in a photo.) @PhotoBrit: you can edit the licence at by editing the file at commons:File:Portrait of Restaurateur and Philanthropist Barbara Lazaroff.jpg but please note you cannot change the licence to a restrictive one as that is not acceptable on Commons. Neither can you upload it onto Wikipedia restricting use to Wikipedia only for the same reason - Wikipedia and sister projects prefer open licences. Anything with a restricted licence is very likely to be deleted on the grounds that a open licenced image could be obtained. If you want to ask for the file to be deleted instead please follow the procedure at commons:Commons:Deletion requests. Nthep (talk) 17:41, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
Also, for any living person, we require the use of an image under a free license, per WP:NFCC#1 - if they are alive, that means a free image is possible. Even if you uploaded this under a non-free license we would delete it here. --Masem (t) 18:11, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
@Masem:Thank you Masem. I'd tried figuring out how to ask for deletion before posting here. It's all confusing. I do want the image used but not on Commons. Only on Wikipedia. Can you please advise what words to edit the licence? I don't want to accidentally do something that causes me to be banned from posting it correctly. MUST I remove it from Commons to put it on Wikipedia only? Also, I miss posted the issue. I did click Upload but I did not click Upload on Commons so perhaps the Uploader feature needs to be checked.

That's the problem. Lazaroff is still alive, so we are required by our non-free content policy to use a free image of her. That's either going to be public domain or a Creative Commons license. If you want to retain a more restrictive copyright on that image, we can't use it. --Masem (t) 18:46, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

No, I'm afraid that's not possible. In fact it's a contradiction in terms: if it's not free for use elsewhere, then it's not free. Freedom for use elsewhere is the whole point about what "free use" stands for. Fut.Perf. ☼ 20:39, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

"Step 3: Provide source and copyright information" When you click "This is a free work" the conditional box opens and says, "Thank you for offering to upload a free work.

Wikipedia loves free files. However, we would love it even more if you uploaded them on our sister project, the Wikimedia Commons. Files uploaded on Commons can be used immediately here on Wikipedia as well as on all its sister projects. Uploading files on Commons works just the same as here. Your Wikipedia account will automatically work on Commons too.

I did that. Then I clicked on "This file is entirely my own work." I then entered more info. I think my problem came with the pop-up menu because it's too unclear. Below that you have 2 choices: 1) Yes, I want this file to be immediately available in all Wikimedia projects, in all languages. I will upload it on the Wikimedia Commons... 2) No, I want to upload this file here on this wiki only. This way it can be used only on the English Wikipedia... I clicked the 2nd choice -- but my license is coming up as the 1st -- and that's why I posted here. See... there appear to be 2 options. Those are what I was just asking about. SO: Issues with the upoader: a) Unclear. Too much learning in order to make an informed choice. Puts me and others off of wanting to provide images. b) Clicking upload should not immediately upload. There should be a review first as there is with Wikipedia uploading. OR an Edit option.

It's hard enough to decide whether to provide the masses with fodder for messing with a photo of a public figure. But on top of that, even within 30 seconds there is no way to review the license that appears and undo it. I get that after the image is used it's too late, but 30 or 60 seconds delay is viable and fair. This current system is creepy.

Also, I know I wrote more info into the fields that didn't make it to the license page. You've told me I can edit that but without being a coding wizard and mind-reader, I (and others) lack the knowlege/tools to do so. Very frustrating. PhotoBrit (talk) 21:43, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

US Public Domain cutoff date

The upload wizard currently includes an option that says "It was created and first published before 1923 and is therefore in the Public Domain in the USA." However, Template:PD-US-expired says "This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1925." Should the upload wizard be updated to say "before 1925" rather than "before 1923"? Or if not, why are the years not the same? Dmoore5556 (talk) 03:53, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for flagging this. This has become out of date recently. 1923 was a fixed cut-off point until 2018, but since then it's started shifting year by year, so currently 1925 seems to be correct. I found this here: [1], for background. Fut.Perf. ☼ 07:09, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Speedy logo wizard?

I upload lots of logos - see, for example here. 99% of the time they follow the same pattern. File name = file description. Article used = file description minus "logo". Minimal use rationale = "Minimal extent of use." Is there any way to further streamline the upload process for logo files? Really, the only 3 pieces of information I should be entering are 1) the actual file name 2) page name 3) file source. Is there any way this could be implemented? I've found a workaround that works well for any sort of routine file uploading: use the wizard once, then edit the file page and copy it into Excel or OpenOffice Calc so you can use the concatenate formula to get it working. Faceless Enemy (talk) 16:45, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Page exit fair use files

I have a little tweak I would like to suggest. After adding the 50 or so school logos There are a couple of improvements I see. This is after the file has been accepted and uploaded, the user just sees a the blank end of the page. They are left hanging. If they are curious they will find the line in the middle of the page that shows the new file name- which they will want in their buffer to paste in the named target page

  1. suggestion link to a exit page which just displays the file name- nice and big
  2. rejig the page so this appears at the bottom of this page not in the middle- and nice and big
  3. load the file name in the copy buffer so it is there for the next step- adding it to the page
  4. on exit, place the file name in the copy buffer and link immediately to the target page in edit mode. On consideration it is a fair use condition that we add the image to that page so logically is part of the fair use process. --ClemRutter (talk) 08:53, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Smoother transition to Commons?

I notice that, when you're uploading a free work and get prompted to switch to Commons, it doesn't carry over any of the information you've added so far, and makes you re-upload the image. Would there be any way to rectify that? {{u|Sdkb}} talk 17:31, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

@Pppery and Xaosflux: Ah, I didn't notice that it needed JavaScript changes; I guess this is more complicated than just an edit request. I don't know how to code JavaScript, unfortunately, so I'm not able to model in the sandbox. I did just set up a sandbox wizard at User:Sdkb/sandbox/Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard, but it unfortunately doesn't seem to work because the JS sandbox you created for me isn't in MediaWiki space. Assuming this can be rectified, if anyone else wants to try playing with the code to see if the order can be switched, feel free to use the sandboxes in my userspace. mp3 not accepted by Wizard?

I tried uploading the mp3 through the Wizard, but the Wizard wouldn't accept it. Seems that the old upload form currently accepts it, especially since patents of the mp3 format has been expired, making mp3 free to use. Why can't the Wizard? --George Ho (talk) 04:01, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

because nobody told it that it could. filebox.accept is a list of MIME types that the upload box will accept, audio/mp3 needs to be added to that list for it to work. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 04:14, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

"Irreplaceable by text" box not working

Whenever I have filled out the form for any other use, the "irreplaceable by text" box doesn't automatically fill out anything. Rather the box doesn't seem to work. That makes the "irreplaceable by text" box unnecessary or unneeded. Can something be done about the "irreplaceable by text" box at the "some other kind of non-free work" option? Can't upload ogg file from mac

(I'm running macOS Catalina 10.15.5 on a MacBook Pro.) In fact, when I click the <choose file> button on this wiki page all my file-types are greyed-out (non-uploadable) except jpg/jpeg and pdf. The glitch is limited to Wikipedia uploads only; for uploads elsewhere on the internet, all my files are accessible. I then recreated my ogg file using Audacity s/w but still no joy. Problem with uploading

Just posted at WP:VPT, but I guess it's more logical to ask here first.

I've been trying to upload an image but the Upload button at the bottom of the Steps 1 to 3 page stays greyed out and inactive. (I'm in the "This is some other kind of non-free work that I believe is legitimate Fair Use" non-FUR option.) No boxes appear either beside the red dots for "Please explain why this purpose could not be served with an alternative, free illustration ..." and "why you are confident that our use of the file will not harm any commercial opportunities ..." – meaning that text can't be entered in these mandatory fields. (Which, naturally, leads to the inactive Upload button.) Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas ...? Thanks, JG66 (talk) 18:06, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Minor Edit Request-August 2020- link to the file they have just uploaded more prominent on screen, and left in Ctrl-C edit buffer

It is possible to provide a cleaner final view of this page. The user clicks //Upload//, this is confirmed by 24 lines of white-space. The message they are looking for is the link to the file they have just uploaded which is there- above a navbox in bold text but not separated from the navbox below. What do I want (apart from a simple life): fewer keystrokes, the link to the file they have just uploaded clearly in the middle of the whitespace, and a return to previous page button five lines below. It would be icing on the cake if the uploaded page link was copied into Cntrl-C buffer, as Cntrl-C/Cntrl-V is almost inevitably the next task for the user.   • followed by "This is an historic portrait of a person no longer alive."
  • and checks "This image will be shown as a primary means of visual identification at the top of the article dedicated to the person in question."

not working AGAIN

Have you guys ran out of server space and so you're trying to discourage people from uploading anything? I am trying to upload pictures that were deleted by some some robot in error and surprise surprise -the pic upload wizard isn't working. Sometimes I really do wonder why I bother with Wikipedia. @WisDom-UK: as has been mentioned before, you need to give more detail than "it isn't working". For example - any error messages you receive, the size of the file you were trying to upload, at what stage in the upload process did it stop working. Nthep (talk) 19:41, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
In common parlance, 'not working' is used when something with a set function is note operating as it should. In this case, the wizard's job is to upload files. One adds a file, one presses upload, and lo - it whirrs along for a bit and then doesn't upload the file. So I've now spent an hour of my life trying to re-upload my wrongfully-deleted files, which were removed by an over-zealous bot with no warning. It's not fun. And why I am giving up my free time for something that's not even fun, and in fact exactly like working for some public sector body with crap IT, I don't know.WisDom-UK (talk) 20:08, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Redesign of first page

So it looks like we don't have anyone at the moment comprehensively redesigning this wizard to better direct the masses to Commons (as we've wanted to), so I put together a new opening page that should at least serve as a decent stopgap. firstly and mainly thanks for taking the initiative. There are a couple of issues on the en: page. We have lost the first question on whether the file is definitely free, or whether it has some copyright and thus will be fair use. It is no use to a newby to ask whether he wishes the file to go somewhere he has never heqrd or a local wiki- he is thinking about free of copyright, or not. We do need a user focused question not a systems focused one. A second point is the position on the page. Does this work on a mobile phone. On my laptops, with multiple windows I often only have eight lines of text visible. Just a few thoughts. ClemRutter (talk) 23:45, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
ClemRutter, both good points. Would this work better as a user-focused rather than systems-focused design? We can implement if yes. Regarding mobile, the redesign has the local button just peeking at the bottom of my phone screen, whereas the current version cuts it off without scrolling. It's still not ideal, and I'm not sure what it's like for others, but since I only mean for this to be a stopgap, I'm going to have to leave the fine-tuning to whoever does the more comprehensive redesign. Requested feature: handle uploads via URL

It'd be nice if, instead of having to download files, upload them, and then paste the URL, the wizard could instead just take a URL of an image and fetch it. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 05:54, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Make it clear that text logos are public domain

The text under "Non-free use rationale" -> "This is a logo of an organization, company, brand, etc." should be rewritten to something like this:

This is a logo of an organization, company, brand, etc.

This is an official logo of an entity that is the subject of a Wikipedia article. It will be included as that entity's primary means of visual identification, at the top of the article in question.

Note: many logos consisting only of text and simple geometric shapes are public domain and should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons with the copyright tag {{pd-textlogo}}.

Note: If you plan to use it for any other purpose than this, please tick the box for "other non-free work" below.

Reasoning: many people incorrectly upload text logos here, when they should be uploaded to commons. It's not made clear that a significant portion of logos are actually public domain, and it'd be a good idea to let people know of it here. Elliot321 (talk | contribs) 03:04, ≤27 December 2020 (UTC)

EXCEPT that "simple" logos that are of, say, UK entities, where "sweat of the brow" is sufficient for copyrightability, this would not be appropriate. Eg, the example commons has for the UK is File:EDGE magazine (logo).svg which cannot be hosted at Commons but we can called here as {{PD-ineligible-USonly}}. So this is not great advice to add without adding lots of caveats about the sweat of the brow doctrine for common law countries. --Masem (t) 04:58, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

I'd still be concerned this may be too much small print. The biggest danger in designing this form is information overload. Uploaders don't read small print, and if there's too much small print, they won't read anything at all, ignoring even the most important basics. It is absolutely crucial that everything in this form is kept on the simplest possible level, even at the cost of over-simplifying some of the rules. With the new distinctions between US and non-US textlogos, your new text is now describing an exception to an exception to an exception to an exception. Let's not do that. The chance that a significant number of users will act correctly on this is near zero. It's far better to have novices upload the occasional textlogo as non-free and then sort those cases out afterwards. Fut.Perf. ☼ 21:25, 11 January 2021 (UTC)

Uploaded what now

This is mainly about Fair use logo for UK schools. I get through the procedure and press the upload button. I now see a blank page. Not particularly helpful. I scroll up the page and there I see the blue linked file name-- so what now. Ok I have done dozens of these uploads, everytime I now copy the new logo into the infobox on its named page. So what I want is an immediate confirmation below the upload button (maybe a fresh page) then two options. 1. Close this window. 2. Go to target page. I didn't like this mornings change to the first page, where the the fair use button has disappeared of the bottom off the screen, and it is a mouse stroke to find it. Each time I do an upload I think as a 'trainer'. If I have a zoom-room- I said to my newbie, Go to that first page, there are two buttons, click on the second one, now answer the questions. Change short description

Sam-2727, good catch that the current description isn't really great. Since the opening page of the wizard includes a link to Commons, I'm a little concerned that saying "local file upload" might lead to some confusion. Would something like Wizard for uploading images and other files for Wikipedia work? Looking back at the description of Sdkb a bit more, I would suggest shortening it a bit, to Wizard for uploading files to Wikipedia because short description guidelines suggest a short description below 40 characters. I believe the only context this would show up is on mobile search, so not that often. It was just bothering me when visiting the page that the short description was wrong. uploading book cover should automatically fill in two tags

When you upload an image and choose the option on the list that it is a book cover, it adds book cover to the Licensing section, but you then have to manually add two things to the Summary. It should automatically make Use = Infobox since there is no possible chance there would be anything else. The other required field is Article, which you could easily see which article it was just placed in, and if none found then have a message reminding people to add one. Covers of albums and video games and such I assume its the same thing. Dream Focus 01:53, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Help for broken script at tewiki

Recent changes to handle deprecated variable of mw seem to have broken the script at tewiki( script accessed through file upload page, script talk page discussion). Bug

As an anon, if you click "Upload a non-free file", On Firefox, the "You are not currently logged in." message appears with 19 pop-up dialogs "Can't find elements: " and "Element not found: ". On Edge the "You are not currently logged in." message does not appear until you've clicked through all the dialogs. These error messages should not appear. Ugh, this is pretty bad. Can an interface admin please apply this change that I tested locally. I reverted these attempts to fix it (they are not necessary, and do not solve the actual problem, but turned something that was a console error into an alert for non-logged-in users) and added an attribute to test whether the wizard is disabled. It can be done without it, by checking for some other attribute that is set in the constructor, but I prefer to be more explicit.

X-Frame-Options

When I tried to move this tool to bs.wp I noticed that it was getting stuck on "Upload in progress". Then I dug a little deeper into it, and it seems like en.wp still has the $wgApiFrameOptions = 'SAMEORIGIN' override, which most wikis do not, and there's a Phabricator task set to remove it (see also T131182). Could the script be reworked to use a different way of checking if the file's been uploaded? – Srđan (talk) 08:41, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Also apart from the changes above, the option I haven't got the evidence right now, but I will provide some if requested to do so. should probably be removed, or at least tag the image with {{Di-no permission}} automatically (though this seems pointless), the user should have emailed or be emailing WP:OTRS when they upload a file from someone else. Having "Evidence: Will be provided on request" added to the file is just wrong, there is no proof that the image is freely licensed from Wikipedia's point of view or as a reuser, what if the person is no longer active on Wikipedia? These should just be tagged with no permission manually so it doesn't make sense to have this as an option and gives the wrong impression to the uploader. I've also noticed a couple other things, under "This is a free work. > This work is so old its copyright has expired > Public Domain status > It was created and first published before 1925 and is therefore in the Public Domain in the USA." The 1925 should be changed to 1926, this could also be changed to {{#time:Y|now -95 years}} to autoupdate. USA should be changed to US to be consistent as per the section "This is a free work. > This file is in the Public Domain for some other reason. > It was created by an agency of the US Federal Government." and because we prefer it in MOS:NOTUSA. Under "It was first published in the USA before 1989, and its copyright expired because it was published without a copyright notice and/or without the necessary copyright registration." "Please look up the exact rules at [2]." should be moved below with <br/> to be consistent with the option above. In the JS page, the template PD-US-1923 should really be changed to PD-US-expired, while the template is correct, the redirect is essentially wrong since it's not the cutoff date, we should not be applying this to new files and this date will always be changing. A picture for a wiki site that has no picture help!

Links on the final page of the wizard

The wizard closes giving me a thumbnail of what I have just uploaded- and some helpful wiki markup and html. I am talking of fair use logos of organisations. Could we please provide a link to the page that I pledged to use the file during the dialogue- because that is the page I need to edit next in order to complete the action. It would be perfect if the name of the image was in my Ctrl-C buffer when I got there, but the software may not permit it. So here is an example :

File:Fair use logo Sir Simon Milton Westminster UTC.png which I will put on Sir Simon Milton Westminster UTC.

How do I upload a file locally to wikipedia?

Upload file- preference

The Upload file link opens the File upload landing page in the current window on a laptop browser (Firefox on Linux). Is it a historical accident that it opens in that window, and does open in a new window? Is this hard wired, or is there a preference I can set to enable a new window by default- Crtl-click opens new possibilities to exercise RSI damage! --ClemRutter (talk) 09:57, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

ClemRutter, I just tried in both Firefox and Chromium on Linux, and both open in the current window. I certainly hope that is the default behavior; pages "deciding for me" that stuff should open in a new tab/window is exceedingly annoying. I know of no preference that changes that, but you could put some custom Javascript into your own .js file that would change the default. Someone might also have some ideas at WP:VPT. Thanks Seraphimblade.If no is no, then no is no. I seem to have left you slightly bemused as to why I would want to. The context is that potentially 4190 UK schools need their logo checked/fixed/added/ altered etc. So starting in a navbox Schools in a county, Visit each in turn. The school page is open, find the official web site and control click- screen grab a clean version of the logo (that will be a png) change tab back to WP page, open Upload file (this is where I want the link to open a new tab) The Wizard opens- Browse to Pictures page- click on last uploaded screen grab. The file name will always be Fair use logo XXXXXXname of WP Open page- this filters down all the text boxes in the Wizard (the source page is still open). Upload the image- copy the new image name- back to the WP page on the school- and paste the image back in that infobox. Close redundant tabs and take the school from the navbox. It should take three minutes- you can do it one handed and read or play chess with grandkids at the same time.ClemRutter (talk) 19:46, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

WebP files

I see that the WebP extension is not listed in the file upload wizard. Is that image type not supported on WP (via the upload wizard at least. It is clearly supported since that article uses a WebP image at commons), or is it just not listed? -2pou (talk) 23:33, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
