Adding references in multiple languages[edit]

I speak English (natively) and Japanese (fluently). I am reading about Fujiwara no Teika in a Japanese text.

Bolaurent It's perfectly acceptable to add a reference to a reliable Japanese-language source; and if there's no reliable English-language source that could be used instead, it's encouraged. Best is to provide the title, etc both in Japanese script and hepburnified, and also in English translation. Template:Cite book (etc) will automate the formatting of such data. You're under no obligation to use the "Cite" templates; but if you choose not to use them, be careful not to give the impression that your English translation of a title is the title. -- Hoary (talk) 05:35, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit counter[edit]

Hello @TheBigBookOfNaturalScience.
Yes. You can find your edit count by first, clicking the Contributions button located (next to the log out) on the top right of this page. There, scroll all the way down and you will find a small box. Go ahead and click the Edit count button. You can see your edit counts there.

@TheBigBookOfNaturalScience: It's not possible. The data is not available in wikitext. A user script could save the number sometimes to make it easier than manually updating. I haven't found a script which only saves the number but Wikipedia:User scripts/List#Userspace 2 shows User:Jeeputer/editCounter which saves a whole table like User:Jeeputer/edit count when you click a link. If the script works (I haven't tried it) then you can extract the edit count with this:

The image is of a page from The Lamp Of Learning a book first published in 1984, so it is likely to be a copyright violation. The picture of Taylor looks older, so it may be public domain. TSventon (talk) 09:29, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming that
  • the standard UK copyright rules apply (70y after author’s death)
  • the image was produced in 1826 (the same year that Taylor died, going by the article) - painted portraits are usually produced during the subject’s life, after all
For the image to not be public domain, the painter would have needed to live (2023-70-1826) = 127 years after painting it. Assuming the painter was 10 when producing the portrait, they would have beat the current documented record of longevity by 15 years.

As a general point, you also need to consider typographical copyright, that is the right of the publisher of a particular edition. It lasts 25 years, so in this particular case is not a problem. BTW, there's something odd about the link, it results in "This page does not currently exist. You can search for this page title in other pages or create this page". The source is https://www.google.com.au/books/edition/The_Lamp_Of_Learning/ZUZZDwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=John+taylor+norwich+martineau+cousins&pg=PA8&printsec=frontcover . It was first published 1984, second edition 1998, e library edition 2003. I believe the text on the page will be under copyright, and the typography may be. According to the book the original image "by R. M. Meadows, was published in the Methodist Magazine, 1808", so the details for commons:File:John_Taylor_(1750-1826).jpg are wrong and I don't know how to fix them. The engraving by Meadows was taken from a portrait by Nathan Branwhite, as the original source (Methodist Magazine 31 (1808), p. 528) makes clear. I've corrected the information at the Commons and changed the license to PD. But comparison with the original also shows that the image reproduced in The Lamp of Learning is distorted: it has been stretched horizontally, so that the subject appears to have a much wider face than in the original engraving. So I've replaced it in the article with another version cropped directly from the original. It's a little blotchier but at least the proportions are correct. Hi there. Do you mean the name of an article that is about you? We don't recommend editing articles about yourself due to the conflict of interest. Instead, make an Wikipedia:Edit requests or ask on the article's Talk page. Either way, make sure that the name change is backed up by a source.

What is the "Country study" template used for?[edit]

I noticed the Template:Country study on the Kamakura period page and thought it read weird and seemed out out place. After looking at the other pages that use it, there doesn't seem to be a consistent usage or placement for the template. Wikipedia is not....[edit]

I need to find a section which states that Wikipedia is not a translation service . I'm on the edge of a dispute concerning album articles in which foreign language song titles are translated into English. I know that colleagues in the Eurovision project long ago agreed that providing translation is not a function of Wikipedia and I'd be grateful if this could be located to help me out. I don't know if there is such a policy. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Titles of works#Translations allows parentheticals with English translations of foreign language titles, and there's even a template for translations. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 22:09, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

doktorb, if in your last question you're asking whether there is such a "policy" (as narrowly defined by and for Wikipedia), no. Thanks @Hoary. I'm mindful of users providing unofficial or even untrue translations to track listings for a number of reasons. If the album itself doesn't translate them, neither should we. Notability and references[edit]

Hi, I just edited the article in my sandbox. I added external links about the person that I am writing about.

  1. Is that considered as Notability?
  2. I added the date of the update right next to the reference (The date when I added the link to the article) and the name of the website. Is that correct?
  3. What else is missing in order to publish my article?

BnayaMeir You added external links, but it is not clear what these are meant to reference. Inline citations are required. Please see Referencing for Beginners.
I have added the appropriate information to allow you to submit the draft, but you shouldn't do so yet. The draft reads very much like an official biography from the doctor's employer; that's not what we are looking for. Wikipedia articles about people should summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the person, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person. Instead of writing the draft and looking for sources, you should find the sources first and summarize what they say, see WP:BACKWARD.
