Question from Imtiaz Hendrix (20:21, 30 September 2023)[edit]

How do I up load images --Imtiaz Hendrix (talk) 20:21, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Imtiaz Hendrix Most of the images used in Wikipedia are hosted at the sister Project, Wikimedia Commons, which has an upload wizard at this link: commons:Special:UploadWizard. The main mistake which new users make is to claim that they are uploading their "own work", when in fact they don't own the copyright to the image: copyright is usually owned by the person who took the photograph or drew the diagram, etc. You may not under any circumstances upload to Commons some random picture you found on the Internet. There are some very limited circumstances where images or logos are uploaded to the English Wikipedia for use only here: see WP:NONFREE for the (complicated!) rules. Do you want to upload something you took with your own camera? That's the simplest case. You might like also to tell me what you intend to do with your image, so I can give further advice. Province of Canada map[edit]

Hi, thanks for the suggestion about the map of the Province of Canada that you gave me earlier this month. It's better than the existing one I found on the Commons. Have now uploaded it: File:Province of Canada.JamesWyld.ca1842.jpg Appreciate your help! Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 18:54, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mr Serjeant Buzfuz Happy to have helped! Was there any reason you uploaded such a low-resolution version? The file at the archive source here can be expanded to full-screen (via green arrow) and then zoomed to show incredible detail and it would be nice to have one of the high-resolution versions on Commons. Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:44, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The reason is that I'm a techno-peasant! I'm barely able to upload stuff. What did I do wrong? Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 20:57, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Plus, the uploaded version now has a grey bar along the bottom of it. I have no idea why, or how to crop it? Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 04:19, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr Serjeant Buzfuz I can upload a higher-resolution version in about 10 days: at present I'm on holiday with limited internet access! There is a good crop tool in Commons but I suggest you don't worry about that at present. If you go ahead and incorporate your current map in whichever article you had in mind, it will automatically update when I upload the better version. Mike Turnbull (talk) 07:17, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great, thanks. No rush. I’m working on a draft article, which is the only place I’m using the map so far. Not sure when I’ll upload the draft to article space. Have a good vacation! Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 10:49, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Michael, the other editor that I asked about it has already fixed it: User:WikiPedant, who has been helpful in the past as well. Thanks for pointing me to the Wyly map; it's now uploaded without the bars. Hope your holiday goes well. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 21:42, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Spiritualsoul1969 (11:55, 8 November 2023)[edit]

Hello Michael, I am absolutely new to Wikipedia , I would highly appreciate if you could help me get started on posting my article related to spirituality. I am unable to load the images as well?

Thanks , Peace & Blessings --Spiritualsoul1969 (talk) 11:55, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spiritualsoul1969 and welcome to Wikipedia. Your edit here is the only one I can see in your account's history. As a new editor I would recommend you use the articles for creation process to create a draft article (click that link for details). However wholly new editors who jump straight in to create articles often regret doing so. It is much more difficult than it may appear and my strong advice would be to start by helping to improve existing articles on topics that interest you e.g. spirituality or one of the articles in the Category:Spirituality: there are lots to choose from! In a moment, I'll add some useful links to your Talk Page but if you have further questions please post them here. Uploading images is for a later time: it won't influence whether or not any draft article is accepted, as that entirely depends on the notability of the subject as defined by Wikipedia. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:11, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
.... I see that someone else has added a number of links to your Talk Page, so there's no need for me to do so. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:25, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Chloe Ashley Butac (12:17, 16 November 2023)[edit]

hello 👋

I'm Chloe Ashley Butac ❤️

Student and MAY I ask if how I can put an picture in this wikipedia --Chloe Ashley Butac (talk) 12:17, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Chloe and welcome to Wikipedia. There are two parts to adding pictures to articles. The first is to find a suitable image in the extensive collection held in Wikimedia Commons. You can use your Wikipedia account to upload your own pictures there if you can't find something suitable but it must be something you have taken with your own camera or drawn yourself because of copyright: most images you might find on the internet are not suitably licensed. Commons has lots of Help Pages about this. My own contributions are at this link to Commons. The second step is to edit the article to include the code that specifies which existing picture is to be used. There are very full instructions for this at Help:Pictures. As you have not made any other edits from your account yet, I suggest you start getting used to how things work in general by beginning the tutorial at Help:Introduction. I'll also place some introductory links on your Talk Page. By all means come back here to ask me about anty details you are unsure of. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:41, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:49, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Organophosphate pesticides[edit]

Hi Mike, I was wondering if I could pick your brains about organophosphate pesticides. The current organophosphate article is largely devoted to the dangers of thee things, but as far as I can tell most of them seem to have been regulated out of common use. Bensulide and Acephate still seem to be important, but parathion looks to be long gone. Do you still keep track of this area? Does that assessment ring true to you? Project Osprey (talk) 14:49, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't follow most pesticides closely, only those where I've created or extensively edited their articles (see my UserPage for many examples). The simplest source of information on actual usage is for the US at this URL, which is a list linking to pesticide usage maps (latest=2018/9), several of which I've placed on Commons and update from time to time. I can see immediately that, for example, tribufos (no WP article) is still used at millions of pounds per year on cotton. In general, I stay clear of upper-level articles like organophosphate or pesticide as I don't want to get into pointless arguments with the anti-pesticide lobby who only see costs and not benefits. I prefer to edit articles on individual chemicals and recently created the list of insecticides and list of herbicides after noting that we have long had one on fungicides but were missing the others. So, yes, I can point you to sources but I don't have current info in my head. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:33, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's ok, I only asked because your bio gave me the impression that you might have worked in this area at some point. Thanks for the link, it's a lot of info to try and make sense of but hopefully useful, at list I have a complete list. The whole area is a mess, pesticides seem to stretch the terminology to it's limit - phosphoramidothioates like Acephate are generalised to organophosphate. The page will have to explain that. I edit top level pages with some reluctance, they often have gatekeepers and I tend to burn the pages down and start again, which causes much anxiety. Also, it takes ages to do, I've been working on a rebuild for months, and likely still will be into next year. Hopefully worth it though. --Project Osprey (talk) 11:08, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Project Osprey To be clear, yes, I did work on agrochemicals for my whole career but never specifically on organophosphates: pyrethroids were the up-and-coming topic when I started out. I think that the reason acephate gets lumped in with organophosphates is owing to its mode-of-action, which is of course cholinesterase inhibition. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:31, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well I've redone much of the page, (more to come later). Time will tell if this amounts to kicking over an ant hill... --Project Osprey (talk) 00:52, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ทีมกฎหมาย You should take up the issue on the article's Talk Page: Talk:Sukavich Rangsitpol to reach a WP:CONSENSUS about content. User:RJFF has been following our normal bold, revert, discuss process. I think that their concern was that your large addition of details about the Golden Triangle has little to do with the biography, and is WP:UNDUE in this context. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:39, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Then he should delete only my edit but This politician was our education reformer .He delete everything.ทีมกฎหมาย (talk) 14:50, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ทีมกฎหมาย The edit summary was "Revert back to NPOV, reliably sourced, concise, well-formated version in intelligible English" so RJFF clearly thought that the article as it then stood was deficient in many ways. The way forward is still to use its Talk Page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:54, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think the following is not reliable sources? If is not well formatted version in intelligible,he could correct the formatted but he deleted the information and reverse to deformation version.

Golden Triangle (Southeast Asia)[edit]

The United Nations (VIENNA) announced that “South East Asian and Chinese Ministers Step up Joint Efforts To Fight Drug Production, Trafficking, Abuse Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam Endorse UN Initiatives “[1] The Golden Triangle was one of the world's two largest opium producing areas in 1995. Question from MissCollegeFootball (16:58, 7 December 2023)[edit]

Hello Michael, Wiki shows the Nov 7, 1916 football score between Mississippi Normal College (now Southern Miss) and Mississippi College (MC) as MC 75, Southern Miss 0. However, MC records show MC 90, MS Normal (USM) 0. I'm highly certain MC's record is the correct one. Further, the game was stopped at the end of the 3rd quarter with MC leading 90-0. --MissCollegeFootball (talk) 16:58, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MissCollegeFootball and welcome to Wikipedia. The edit here is the only one you have made, so I can't tell which article where you saw that information which you believe is incorrect. We discuss such issues on the Talk Page of the article in question, or alternatively you can edit the article to change the information to what you think is correct: provided you also add a reliable source for it (a process described here). Note that your own knowledge isn't enough, as sources we cite have to be published. In a moment, I'll add some links to your Talk Page which will help as an introduction to Wikipedia. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:12, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MissCollegeFootball I've now tracked down the source for the score in our article 1916 Mississippi Normal Normalites football team. I'm afraid it confirms the 75-0 score. If that's wrong, you need to take that up with the website. Wikipedia relies on verifiabity, not truth. Mike Turnbull (talk) 22:03, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Esthersilburn Welcome to Wikipedia! Apologies for the delay in replying: I'm on holiday with limited internet access. You'll get all you need to know by reading the advice at WP:YFA. For biographies of living people you also need to be aware of the policy here. To be honest, I would strongly advise you not to start learning how to edit Wikipedia by drafting a new article: it is much more difficult than it may appear and you would be better to try to improve several existing articles first to get an idea about how things work. If you are determined to try, please read this advice and start looking at the page for the teahouse, where inexperienced editors can quickly get help from others. In a moment, I'll add a message on your Talk Page where I'll place a few more useful links. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:12, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Lotustheblooming (00:20, 13 January 2024)[edit]

Hey there! I ran across a article for which the note box on the top no longer seemed relevant, so I removed that box so that future editors wouldn't think their was still work to be done. Are there any particular guidelines on when to remove on of those boxes? when can I consider the issue to be 'fixed?' --Lotustheblooming (talk) 00:20, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(by talk reader) @Lotustheblooming: Thanks for asking! I reverted your edit to Plastic Disclosure Project (for example) because the article still reads like scummy ad copy. Typically, it's appropriate to remove a maintenance template when the issue has been resolved but the edit you made did not accomplish that. I, more than some, have doubts about environmental extortion rackets and their corporate greenwashing so that particular article needs work, which will be difficult because of the slant of extant source material. Deleting that article might make more sense. Problems like promotional tone are subjective so you might steer clear of those and stick to objective problems like orphaned articles, unsourced articles, etc. I am glad that you came to ask, as we're always glad to help new editors learn the ropes. Chris Troutman (talk) 01:07, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Understood! It seemed like it had improved a lot from when that template was added, but not enough. Thank you for your response! Lotustheblooming (talk) 01:10, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Lotustheblooming Apologies for the delay: I have been on holiday with limited internet access. I see that your question has been answered by Chris in the meantime. If you need rapid answers in the future, you could try posting at the Teahouse but don't hesitate to add more questions here on my Talk Page if you prefer. I usually reply within a day or so. Question from Ongitsmikey (20:43, 19 January 2024)[edit]

hi how do i make my own wikipedia page, ideally about me --Ongitsmikey (talk) 20:43, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Ongitsmikey and welcome to Wikipedia editing. All editors are allowed to create what are called User Pages, where you can tell people a little about yourself, your interests, and what you intend to contribute to the encyclopaedia. To do that, just click on the currently redlink to your name and type in what you want to say, following the full content guideline here. Note that what you type is not part of the main encyclopaedia and won't be found by search engines. The word "page" is used here to mean a webpage: Wikipedians use the more restricted word "article" to refer to the biographies and other content that readers are mainly interested in. Autobiographies are strongly discouraged, for reasons explained at this essay and this one. Please read those carefully before you attempt to draft any attempt at an article about yourself: you are unlikely to pass the threshold for what we call notability, and if you did it would be better for some volunteer other than yourself to create it based entirely on already-published sources meeting these criteria.
Note that you are currently trying to edit without understanding Wikipedia policies and guidelines. I have already reverted one of your edits. The stuff you removed was not "random" but an important aid to readers who may have reached the Gemba article when they were seeking something related but different that could be found elsewhere. In a moment, I'll add some general links that you may find helpful onto your Talk Page. Regards. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:04, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Rainingflowers (01:01, 22 January 2024)[edit]

Is it possible to make a page? --Rainingflowers (talk) 01:01, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rainingflowers Well, of course it is possible if by "make a page" you mean "create an article in the encyclopaedia about something": the English Wikipedia already has 6,804,026 of them! However, I would strongly advise against you jumping in to create a new article until you understand some of our policies and guidelines. It is more difficult than it may appear and newcomers who, for example, try to create an autobiography nearly always fail. In a moment. I'll place a few useful links on your Talk Page that will guide you to more advice. Let me know here in this thread if you then have further questions about any aspect of being an editor. Good luck. Question from Khalid Al-Saud1 on Rashed Al-Khuzai (09:14, 23 January 2024)[edit]

How to add image already exist in Wikipedia --Khalid Al-Saud1 (talk) 09:14, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Khalid Al-Saud1 and welcome to Wikipedia. I see that you have already made some additions to the article Rashed Al-Khuzai and I assume that you want to add or change an image for one held on Wikimedia Commons, for example one held in Commons:Category:Rashed Al-Khuzai. The image in the infobox is changed just by replacing the image name where it currently says |image = Prince Rashed Al-Khuzai.jpg. For images in the text of the article, you need to wikilink the file name and put in various other parameters, as explained very fully at H:PICTURES. Most editors here find that making this sort of change is easiest using the source editor rather than the visual editor although the edit can be made in either. This page gives step-by-step instructions on using each editor. In a moment, I'll add some other useful links to your Talk Page, so you'll have them for future use. Good luck. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:42, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Exesknob (02:48, 30 January 2024)[edit]

Hey there, I have tried citing a source using Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page). but on the page it says I have made a reference with no content in it it when I have. Help. --Exesknob (talk) 02:48, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Exesknob It would have been helpful if you had told me which article you were editing when you saw the error message. As far as I can tell from your contributions, the problem was with this edit Note how you added <ref></ref> tags (which are intended to surround citation details) but you had included no content. Hence the red error message. Many of your edits so far have been problematic and people have been reverting them and commenting on your Talk Page. I suggest you spend much more time reading about how Wikipedia works before you do any more editing to articles. And NEVER use ChatGPT to edit here! A couple of other things: 1) don't mark your edits as "minor" unless they are of the type described at WP:MINOR (i.e. correcting typos mainly) and 2) don't add science content to pages such as light water which are not articles but instead are pages intended to direct readers to the possible real articles which they might have been looking for. Such pages are called "disambiguation pages", which is Wikipedia jargon for pages that distinguish the possibly ambiguous alternative meanings a word or phrase could have. See WP:DAB for the details. Question from CarasikS (17:58, 30 January 2024)[edit]

Is there a way to create a page that is only for my personal use and lets me see the information I need for writing my articles? --CarasikS (talk) 17:58, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(by talk reader) @CarasikS: You can use User:CarasikS/sandbox. Please remember that everything on a wiki is interconnected and visible. Chris Troutman (talk) 18:04, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CarasikS Welcome to Wikipedia editing. As you can see from my userpage, it is perfectly acceptable to place useful links and information there that is useful for your work. The general advice is given at WP:UPYES. Note that this page should not be used for purposes unrelated to Wikipedia editing, or it will be removed by administrators. Whatever you save/publish anywhere on Wikipedia is available for others to see: there are no entirely confidential areas. Information about sandboxes is available at that link. Question from ITSTIMETOSAYGOODBYEMAN (04:13, 2 February 2024)[edit]

Is there an alternative to Wikipedia for sources of things (for instance, theres used to be no Green, Green page)? Would that be moral and not lazy? --ITSTIMETOSAYGOODBYEMAN (talk) 04:13, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@ITSTIMETOSAYGOODBYEMAN I'm not clear what you are asking. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia which summarises what other published sources say about topics. Hence the article green includes over a hundred citations. It is our task as editors here to accurately reflect what reliable sources say, so that readers can verify the information. Please read the pages I have linked, which explain further how things work. If you have further questions, you can post them here in this thread. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:22, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Informative, but theres a mistake: "Green, Green" is a 1960s american song popularized by Japanese artists in the 1990s-2010s, I was not talking about Green. I honestly didn't even know the colour had it's own page. ITSTIMETOSAYGOODBYEMAN (talk) 02:36, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ITSTIMETOSAYGOODBYEMAN It turns out that there are several Wikipedia articles related to Green Green. If you click on that link you will be taken to the disambiguation page where they are listed. If you have suggestions for improvements to any of these (for example the song Green, Green), please make it on the relevant Talk Page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:22, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
..what? I wasn't talking about the disambiguation page, you talked about Green, not "Green, Green" ITSTIMETOSAYGOODBYEMAN (talk) 21:49, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from EagleSleuth (03:00, 7 February 2024)[edit]

Hello Michael,

I hope this message finds you well. As my assigned mentor, I'm reaching out to seek your guidance on a matter regarding one of my drafts on Wikipedia.

Recently, I created a draft for an article about an actor, which was subsequently declined. After reviewing the feedback and considering the best approach to address the issues, I decided to start afresh and created a new draft that better aligns with Wikipedia's guidelines and standards.

Given this context, I would like to request your assistance in deleting the original draft. The title of the draft is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Troy_Bronson_Actor . I believe removing this draft would help avoid confusion and ensure that the focus remains on the improved version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Troy_Bronson_2024

I understand that you mainly contribute to science-related topics, but I would greatly appreciate any help or direction you can provide on this matter, including guidance on using Wikimedia Commons for future contributions that may require image uploads.

Thank you very much for your time and support. I look forward to hearing from you and am eager to continue contributing to Wikipedia under your mentorship.

Best regards, EagleSleuth (talk) 03:00, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@EagleSleuth I think that the draft in question has already been deleted by an admin. If you need to do this again in future, there is a template that you can place at the top of a draft provided that you created it and are the only substantial contributor. See {{db-author}} for the details. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to post them here in this thread. Good luck with your editing. Question from Bhadeswar (06:34, 13 February 2024)[edit]

Hello, I have just started editing an article which already has some references. How do I enter a book ref? --Bhadeswar (talk) 06:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Bhadeswar and welcome to Wikipedia editing. I don't see any record of other edits in your contribution history, so I don't know which article you want to work on. There is guidance on adding references on this linked page. For books, we use a template {{cite book}}. Click on that template link and you'll see the sorts of parameters (author names etc.) which can be included. In a moment, I'll add some other useful information to your Talk Page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:05, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Mike. Thanks fore your reply. I only discovered the article on my father in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdul_Matin_Chaudhary yesterday, and started editing without joining. I now see the corrections on the side panel. I am also the publisher of a 196-pp biography of AMC written by Shibly, which ref I have now entered as ref 1. I have verified all the info in the article, and now want to add some more - all based on the book. Please help in regularizing my corrections already made. Also ref https://books.google.com.bd/books/about/Abdul_Matin_Chaudhury_1895_1948.html?id=ua3y6g7IHMAC&redir_esc=y Bhadeswar (talk) 14:22, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bhadeswar I can see that the article has a number of technical problems (cite errors etc.) that I'll try to clean up in a moment. Meanwhile you should carefully read this page about conflicts of interests. As the article is about your father, you may know information that is not published in a reliable source but Wikipedia does not allow that to be included. The relevant policy is here. You need to disclose your COI on your own userpage and on the Talk page of the article at Talk:Abdul Matin Chaudhary. There is a special template you can use to suggest new material for the article, using the edit request wizard. Some editors here object strongly to people with a COI editing articles, but provided you follow the rules all will be OK. You can ask for my help if you are in doubt about anything. Member of the 1st National Assembly of Pakistan
In office

1947–1948

AMC was a Member of the Pakistan Constituent Assembly in 1947-1948. (National Assembly of Pakistan came into existence later in 1956)
Minister of Agriculture, Pakistan
In office
1947–1948
Totally incorrect. He was NEVER a Minister in Pakistan.
Member of Central Legislative Assembly
In office
1926–1934
The correct name is Indian Legislative Assembly Bhadeswar (talk) 09:46, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bhadeswar I have redone the formatting of your post, which broke the wikicode owing to the way you entered the table. As you know, I fixed the technical errors on the Abdul Matin Chaudhary article yesterday but I have no access to the sources so no way to check what you say. Please use the edit request wizard on the Talk Page of the article to explain (and justify with reliable sources) the needed alterations. You can insist that material which is incorrect and not supported by inline citations be removed. I assume that is the case here. You might like to check the articles Constituent Assembly of Pakistan and Golapganj_Upazila#Notable_people, where AMC is stated to be the agriculture minister. I assume that all the confusion comes about because of people having similar names but I'm not in a position to help except to advise on Wikipedia policy and the technical aspects of editing. Note that there is a menu called "What links here" which can be used on AMC's article to find out which other articles wikilink to it and may need review. Question from Selectrick (22:28, 14 February 2024)[edit]

I will not attempt to edit here at Wikipedia for fear of my possible misinterpretation of the article or information in question. Alternatively, I will pose a question for others to look into and possibly edit if deemed necessary. Anyway, here is my question: About page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_players_who_have_won_the_most_NFL_championships#List_of_players_with_most_Super_Bowl_championships "List of players who have won the most NFL championships" I've noticed that Joe Montana is on the list with a blank space in the column 'seasons', and sub-column 'won'. Is this a mistake or am I misunderstanding the information? BTW, at a glance, I also see Rob Gronkowski with a blank beside his name as well. I haven't delved deep enough to notice others. Please advise, thank you very much! --Selectrick (talk) 22:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Selectrick (22:33, 14 February 2024)[edit]

Disregard my earlier query, I've noticed my idiotic error. Sorry! --Selectrick (talk) 22:33, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Selectrick No problem! In general, specific questions about article content should be asked on the Talk Page of the article, where editors interested in it will see your comment. Alternatively, the Teahouse is a good place to ask questions since experienced editors will respond very quickly. In a moment, I'll add some links to your Talk Page which may help you further. Mike Turnbull (talk) 22:38, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can I have list of recent contributions for my user page?[edit]

@Michael D. Turnbull Hello Michael D. Turnbull, I see your list of recent contributions is very interesting. Can I have one in my user page? This is for my recent contributions. Thank you! Hanoifun (talk) 14:47, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hanoifun Like most things you see on people's userpages, you can copy them to your own userpage by taking a look at the source code and transferring it. Mine says {{Special:Contribs/Michael D. Turnbull|limit=10}}, so in your case you will need to use {{Special:Contribs/Hanoifun|limit=10}}. Alter the limit= part if you want more or less output. I have noticed that the contribution list on my userpage is always one or two contributions behind my actual tally, for reasons I don't understand! Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:12, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull Well, thank you so much! Hanoifun (talk) 15:21, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do the Wikipedia have templates about this article is being developed[edit]

@Michael D. Turnbull Sorry to ask you again, I'm expanding some short articles (for example: Buôn Ma Thuột city and Tu Son city), add more information and sources. I would like to tell readers this article is being developed. But now, I'm very busy preparing from my exam in school, so I'm not sure I can done this early. So, do the Wikipedia have templates about this article is being developed? Thank you! Lam Nguyen, talk to me 13:51, 18 February 2024 (UTC) 13:49, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Hanoifun There are templates {{inuse}} and {{Under construction}} (see links for details) which can be added to articles that are being actively worked on. However, other editors may object if you leave them in place for a long time: we have a policy that says articles are not owned by anyone and long-term use of these templates is a bit contrary to that. My advice is that Wikipedia has no deadlines and you should prioritise your studies over editing here! All our articles are somewhat works-in-progress and no-one will mind if you can't spare the time currently to add something you intend to add later. One possibility is to use the article's Talk Page to mention briefly what you intend to work on more fully later. Anyone with the article on their watchlist will be alerted by your Talk Page addition. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:03, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull Thank you very much! After reading about 2 templates {{inuse}} and {{Under construction}}, I see if the template page has not been edited in several days, it will be removed. And because of my busy studying, I'm not sure about that I can done this in a short time. So I decided not to use this. Maybe in the future, when I have more free time, I am definitely going to use it. Lam Nguyen (talk) 14:27, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Swampycow (13:53, 22 February 2024)[edit]

Hello, I'm Swampycow and have been assigned your mentorship - thanks for taking the time out of your day to answer our questions!

I had a question about rewriting articles - I would like to do a rewrite of the article Loss function, but being a bit larger than my previous minor edits I was wondering if there was a way to save an edit without publishing it and come back to it later? Something like the Sandbox but that doesn't delete itself occasionally, and perhaps a way for it to go through review prior to publishing. Thanks! Swampycow (talk) 13:53, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Swampycow and welcome to Wikipedia! That article has been around a long time (since 2004) and has 194 page watchers, which means that lots of people are interested in it. Hence I don't think that you should attempt a massive rewrite except incrementally by making changes at the article itself. You could mention your intentions at the Talk Page Talk:Loss function so others know what you intend to do and can comment. You can create a personal sandbox at User:Swampycow/sandbox just by clicking on this (currently red) link. That's where you can, for example, develop sections of the material you want to add to the main article: most new editors find that it is getting the source references correct that is the tricky part, so please read the guide. By all means ask me futher questions here in this thread as you proceed. I get automatically alerted as soon as anyone posts here. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:52, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jakelacaze (01:01, 26 February 2024)[edit]

How can I edit a page title and image for a company?

This is the page I'm asking for: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laredo_Petroleum

I've made the other changes I could figure out. --Jakelacaze (talk) 01:01, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jakelacaze and welcome to Wikipedia editing. As your account went straight to the edits to Laredo Petroleum, I assume that you work for them or are being paid by them for your contributions here. The Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia has very strict terms and conditions relating to paid editing. You must comply with the disclosure procedure described at the WP:PAID link. Provided you do so, there is then no problem with you suggesting edits to the article or to ask for it to be renamed to Vital Energy. To do that, you need to use the Talk Page of the article at Talk:Laredo Petroleum. We have special templates to draw attention to requests from individuals with a conflict of interest and there is a edit request wizard which sets up the correct template {{Edit COI}} in a fairly simple manner. There are groups of editors here who specialise in checking these requests and implementing them or explaining why they are not appropriate. Please make sure your request(s) include citations to reliable sources for the changes you suggest. If you run into any problems, by all means return to this thread and I'll give you further guidance. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:07, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I worked for Laredo in the past but have not done so since 2017. This article was just an easy place for me to help out.
Thank you for the info! Jakelacaze (talk) 14:23, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, so you should just read the COI link and consider whether anything there strikes you as worth disclosing (which would be done on the Talk Pages of articles). The only other thing you need to be careful about is not to add anything you personally know but can't be backed up by citations. In a moment I'll add some useful links to your own Talk Page which should help you up the rather steep learning curve. I hope you find editing Wikipedia rewarding. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:35, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jakelacaze P.S. On the topic of images, see H:PICTURES. The photos or drawings would be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, probably using the Wizard at commons:Special:UploadWizard if they were photos you took yourself and hence can license appropriately. If you want to add a company logo, that's a bit more complicated as it depends on the copyright, which in turn depends on the composition of the logo. See WP:LOGO for the details. The safest thing to do is to proceed as if a WP:NONFREE image, or ask the experts at the Commons Help Desk located at c:Commons:Village_pump/Copyright to confirm that in their opinion the logo is below the threshold of originality, so OK for Commons. Copyvio help[edit]

I noticed this edit to Rap God because it was by one of the editors assigned to me in the mentorship scheme. It is almost certainly a WP:COPYVIO of the song's lyrics but, I assume, was a transcription of those lyrics rather than a direct copy from some text source. Hence I'm in doubt how to proceed. I assume that the lyrics need to be removed and RevDelled. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:38, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would think to treat transcription similarly to close paraphrasing of a copyrighted source, where it's clear that the work is someone else's. I have deleted the revisions in question under RD1. Complex/Rational 15:50, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Abdul Matin Chaudhury[edit]

@Michael D. Turnbull I would like to add: He attended the 1st Round Table Conference in London (November 1930 - Jamuary 1931) as Private Secretary to Sir Muhammad Akbar Hydari, who represented Hyderabad as its Finance Minister. ref: Khaliquzzaman, Chaudhury, Pathway to Pakistan. Lahore: Longman, 1961. p. 108, quoted by Shibly pp. 42-43. Bhadeswar (talk) 17:42, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bhadeswar Please could you make this request on Talk:Abdul Matin Chaudhury, not here! I don't have access to the sources and know very little about the topic. You need to get the attention of editors who are interested in fulfilling WP:edit requests in politics/Pakistan and the best way to do that is to use the wizard which sets up the correct template. I was happy to help with the photos, since they don't need a separate source. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:54, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Clison Bissem Sato (13:20, 12 March 2024)[edit]

How can I create my biography --Clison Bissem Sato (talk) 13:20, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Clison Bissem Sato and welcome to Wikipedia. I'm afraid that the short answer is that Wikipedia is not social media and does not host self-created biographies. (See WP:AUTO for some of the reasons why not). There are simply too many people in the world for everyone to have a biography here and by longstanding consensus, Wikipedia only has articles about notable people who have already been written about elsewhere. We rely on already-published reliable sources that are independent of the person being written about to create biographies. I doubt that any such sources exist for you: and they don't for me either. Please contribute to the encyclopaedia in some other way. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:10, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TheLastUbykh (19:25, 26 March 2024)[edit]

Hi! Mann Mann keeps vandalizing my edits in Central Asia. I reported him to vandalizing to administrators. Should I do anything else and is there any other advice? --TheLastUbykh (talk) 19:25, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Answered at User talk:TheLastUbykh § Help me!, though obviously that does not preclude you from responding as well (just thought you'd like to know). Primefac (talk) 19:46, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheLastUbykh Your issue has now been taken up elsewhere and I am neither a subject-matter expert nor an administrator, so I think it best I not get involved. As to advice, I would suggest you read about one core guideline described here and then reflect that it is best not to use the term "vandalism" except in the most obvious cases of editors who know their edits will damage the encyclopaedia, because to do otherwise can be seen as a personal attack, which helps no-one. Incidentally, the conventional way to alter your views on Talk Pages if you change your mind about something is to strike out the words you no longer want using tags <s></s>, which turns "original comment" into "original comment" and allows you to put something else in place of the strike-out. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:51, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is the opposite of what we are taught to do in Academia. And Academia is also a collaborative project but I see what you mean by the cultural sphere of Wikipedia in regards to "vandalism" and "personal attacks." Thanks for your suggestion for striking out words.
It seems I am going to have to dive deep into primary sources and secondary sources if I want to defend my point further. It is a long debated and somewhat controversial subject and the main consensus in Academia has long changed. Wikipedia just seems behind. It does seem like a waste of time to indulge when there is no academic gain. TheLastUbykh (talk) 12:39, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheLastUbykh It's always been the case that Wikipedia lags academia, and deliberately so as an encyclopaedia which forbids original research. For similar reasons we prefer secondary to primary sources. Please don't give up: this is a place for volunteers not looking for academic (or any other) gain. You may find this essay interesting.
