Advice

Hey Whpq, Since you were so nice as to welcome me and give me some tips already, I thought I'd ask you for some advice. I have been working on wikifying articles and I've come across quite a few that only have one reference, which is to a wikisource page, and the information was copypasted from one to the other so it is exactly the same. Example: John Dean Blythe. Is this something that should be proposed for deletion? Or is it fine as long as people put in more sources and info? Please let me know when you get a chance. Thanks. I'll address the John Dean Blythe article first as it is representative of a large class of articles that you may come across when wikifying. The Dictionary of National Biography is a major reference work. As a notable encyclopedia, any person who has an entry in it is going meet Wikipedia's inclusion guidelines. WikiSource is a resource for free content source text. Editions of the Dictionary of National Biography for which the copyright terms have expired are in the public domain. For that reason, we will find these biographies in WikiSource. They are also valid as encyclopedia articles; thus they are also present in Wikipedia. The fact that they are in both places does not require deletion because WikiSource and Wikipedia are two different things. As for referencing, because we treat other encyclopedias as reliable sources, and the source of the text was the encyclopedia, it is considered to be adequately referenced and no more references are needed although you are free to add more if you wish.
In general, if you come across an article that is insufficiently referenced, you can add the {{unreferenced}} tag if it has none, or the {{refimprove}} tag if it needs more. If there are specific claims that you want to single out for reference attention, you can also use {{cn}} inline with the text. When I'm going through wikifying, I sometimes try to correct the referencing deficiency by finding and adding sources, but I suspect most people won't. And that's okay. When focused on wikifying, it's often easier to plow through when you're in a groove without distracting side tasks.

inre Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Prosper Masquelier

I've been working on the article for Prosper Masquelier, fixing someone's poor trans-wiki of the article from fr.Wikipedia, adding proper reliable sources, correcting errors created by the mis-translation to English, removing hyperbole, and making the whole thing properly encyclopedic per OUR manual of style.[1] More to do, as I found far more sources than seemed the nominator here. God love the French, but they use a different set of guidelines and policies... similar to but not quite the same as ours... and per OUR policies and guidelines, I think the GNG is met. Resignation from Wikipedia

When Wikipedia first started, it was a very nice project. You could contribute to existing articles or start new ones, and it was fun to watch other users improve on what you had written -- expanding it, making it clearer, adding more information, etc. It really worked well for a number of years.

But those days are over. I've found lately that if you try to contribute anything at all, somebody immediately deletes your contribution, citing some obscure violation of the minutiae of thousands of Wikipedia rules and policies. I've sometimes spent hours and hours arguing with someone over making even the tiniest change to an article; then after having soundly won the argument, had my contribution deleted anyway. Start a new article on some topic, and it gets almost immediately deleted. Try correcting or adding to an existing article, and your edits are immediately reverted. Try to look up an article you wrote a few years ago, and it's gone. There's just no point in spending time on the Wikipedia project anymore, when anything you do is immediately deleted. After many years of contributing to Wikipedia, I've finally had enough of fighting with these self-appointed deletionist Wikipedia topic police. I won't be contributing to it anymore, and will be joining the increasing number of people who are abandoning the Wikipedia project. SimpsonDG (talk) 14:21, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

If you don't believe me you can ask him by sending msg in flickr. You were talking about I should not upload pics bcs I'm having problems of copyright status but I would like to learn from you for how to upload any pic to Wikipedia, bcs most of pics uploaded to Indian section I'm not satisfied with them bcs I think India has much more to see than poverty or any other useless pics. We can search and upload much more beautiful pics to the respective sections. If you see to the USA section even they have a village description on Wikipedia and that too with good pictures but here all it is all reverse. Metro (supermarket, Indonesia)

I noticed that in your comment in the AfD for Metro (supermarket, Indonesia) you stated that you weren't able to translate Indonesian webpages. Consider using Google Chrome, which has a translation system built into it, which translated the two links you provided in the AfD quite nicely.   • Reply - I am aware of automated translation tools, and do make use of them. But they still have a lot of limitations including poor translation, and difficulty discerning context. The Orchard (company)

Hello, I saw that you cleaned up a page for The Orchard, a music distribution company. I wondered if you knew whether this company is the same "The Orchard Music" that is currently making bogus copyright claims all over YouTube for music that actually is actually part of Apple's iLife software and is supposed to be available royalty-free for non-commercial use. If so, I would like list it on their Wiki page as a "Controversy". However I obviously don't want to put it on the page of an unrelated, innocent company. When something's in two other encyclopaedias, repeatedly nominate it for deletion in Wikipedia.

You can go into this discussion, only four days from the last one, armed with a second encyclopaedia article, written by a professor of geography at University of Alaska Fairbanks, if you like. A little help with deletion please

Hello:

My name is Gerald del Campo. I am the CEO of The Order of Thelemic Knights, which apparently had a page on Wikipedia that was taken down in 2011. I have just become aware of this.

On the deletion page some one noted that our non-profit, tax-exempt organization is a "blatant hoax" as if the organization didn't exist. As the CEO of this organization, which works along side of The Red Cross and *many* other charities, I take exception to this (as would the IRS) as it doesn't appear as though the editors who reviewed the page took much care in researching it. Furthermore, there are articles on Wikipedia itself that reference pages written by our members on our website. We also do a fair bit of publishing, which can be verified with a quick search on Amazon.com - we are listed as a non-profit organization by the Oregon Secretary of State, where our headquarters resides. Quite frankly, I am disappointed that an organization that does the sort of work we do would be so easily blown off by your editors with so little research. The subject matter "Thelema" is subject to great political bias and manipulation by some Wikipedia editors who are members of a supposed competing organization. If you allow that sort of manipulation to continue, Wikipedia will no longer be a source of unbiased factual information.

I am asking you to reconsider reversing the decision to delete, and perhaps spend a little time understanding the sort of work that we have done, and continue to do for the greater good in the name of our chosen spiritual paradigm. If I have not followed the procedure to contest deletions properly, I must apologize in advance for not understanding the way Wikipedia works.

Please contact me with any questions you might have. I could even arrange a phone call if you prefer.

  • Reply - As bizarre as this may sound for the editor who created the Mark McMorris article. I haven't the faintest idea what he looks like. In fact, I didn't know who he was until I read about the trick he pulled. I tried to get more info by looking him up in Wikipedia and found there was no article. so I researched and found the bio material elsewhere and the article was created as a byproduct of my curiosity. Are you sure. I'm guessing that McMorris is the guy on the right side of the picture. The tags on the image indicate Matts Kulisek is one of the people in the picture and the guy on the left looks like him based on the google image results. The guy in the centre is Sebastien Toutant which leaves McMorris as the guy on the right. This article says one of McMorris' sponsors is the Source. Looking at the image, his board is up and shows Source as one of the logos on it. Probably best to send a note to the flickr member and confirm. -- Whpq (talk) 17:27, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Moroccan mint tea

Hi. I've declined the speedy deletion request of Moroccan mint tea, as it looks fine as a redirect and I don't really understand why it should be deleted.   • The more common English term for the tea is Moroccan mint tea. user:icetea8 was the one who did the copy-paste move trying to put the article at Moroccan mint tea. I'm not particularly fussed over the name, but after reviewing book sources, it does appear that Moroccan mint tea is the more prevalent usage over Touareg tea, so based on Wikipedia:Article titles, I placed the speedy to make way for a move. Salt Potatoes

This is basically an article on Irish salt potatoes served in Central New York. It is not about German salt potatoes called Pellkartoffeln and served with quark. There is already a German page called List of German dishes with a description of this German dish. Why don't you improve that article or create a new page for Pellkartoffeln? To say Wiki is "unreliable" because it doesn't have a different dish on this page seems rather testy to me. Nconwaymicelli (talk) 08:03, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

  • Reply - The link to the Germain wikipedia article was being used as a reference. Wikipedia, as a user sumbitted content with no formal editorial oversight is not considered a reliabler source for the purposes of verification of information.   • Reply - Wikipedia is not a repository of answers to everybody's questions. It is an encyclopedia. If the power control lever in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter has sufficient coverage to create an article about it, then you could create such an article. Deletion of Doghouse Diaries

Although the article has been deleted, I wasn't able to get any response for my last edit, which includes another reference from webmagazine, MakeUseOf. I agree some of these webmagazines I have never heard of, but that doesn't really qualify them to be unreliable sources. For example MakeUseOf, has a full editorial board, and not just from the magazine, but also from its wiki entry it seems like a reliable web magazine. In any case, this was my final comment, if because of this you change your mind, please let me know what I could do.

I have added yet another reference which puts doghouse diaries in the list of Top 8 web comics. This was in the web-magazineMakeUseOf, an independent media magazine, with an independent editorial board. MakeUseOf, Mashable and Gizmodo, each of them have covered Doghouse Diaries well enough to qualify it to be notable. The objection however could be as to whether the above sources are reliable or not. Here are my points why they could be considered reliable
  • They are not related to Doghouse Diaries, nor does it seem that they are trying to unfairly promote Doghouse Diaries.
  • They have editorial system, for which I refer to their corresponding wiki articles, for example the editorial for MakeUseOf is Editorial staff. Each one of them has an Editor-in-chief and so on.
The clarity of this discussion would be enhanced if the other wiki editors could cite the reason why they think the above references cannot be taken as reliable. Points like Mashable is a trivial source, is a trivial argument.Shashi B Jain (talk) 09:01, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

I am currently working on the Wiki page for Ms Radha Thomas. She is an Indian jazz singer and songwriter. In fact, she is known as a diva in the Indian jazz scene. She previously was with the band Human Bondage and has sung and performed globally. The article is still under development. I haven't completed it or submitted it for review yet. The technically correct answer to your first question would be that nobody has ever nominated me, nor have I ever self-nominated for adminship. But seriously, I have thought about whether I wanted to become an administrator. Most of the stuff I do that interests me on Wikipedia do not require me to have administrator privileges.
