Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

I'm back!

Just wanted to say that I'm back! Had a bit of a rough time back in spring and just lost the spark for Wikipedia in the meantime. I felt it was time to check back in now and it feels quite exciting. I haven't been following anything since somewhere in April and probably have quite some catching up to do.

Are there any cool techincal projects I should be aware of? I see the WikiProject banner shell has gotten the class rating now and that there is active work for more improvements on that front. Did anything happen with the LST situation? Didn't find much about it but may very well just be missing it in some archive. I don't really have a project in mind right now so I'm quite persuadable if you guys have suggestions. --Trialpears (talk) 06:20, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Hey. Regarding this edit, I don't think this should be a redirect. {{W-FAQ}} includes a button which, when clicked, is meant to preload the text at {{W-FAQ/Helpme}}. By making it a redirect, the user is presented with the source code of {{Help me}} instead the literal text {{Help me}}, which is not only extremely confusing, but also doesn't work and produces the self-reference template when you hit publish for some reason (see my test edit here). Plus, the original content includes a comment which acts as a helpful direction on what to do. Aidan9382 (talk) 06:39, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Lua stuff

Hey Trialpears! Thank you for offering your help with improving Module:Old move. I've done some work over at this repository, like implementing move logs and custom lits, but I'm kind of stumped on how collapsing should be done. I would really appreciate if you could give it a look and help me a bit.

PS: Don't mind the bad code too much, this is my first time doing actual work in Lua :v. – MaterialWorks 14:51, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

UPDATE: I've pushed the code to the module sandbox, feel free to edit it. – MaterialWorks 21:51, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

Question from IrisSpine (17:00, 4 August 2023)

Hey there! I just created the page House of Ka and I was curious how long it takes a patroller to make the talk page. Is that something I can submit for? Thank you for all you do to help Wikipedia be better! :) --IrisSpine (talk) 17:00, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello @IrisSpine! The review backlog is sadly quite long and it taking two months or more wouldn't be that unusual. I'm not experienced with page patrolling and won't process anything that isn't very simple but I took a look at it and think it would have just enough sources if Fangoria, Rue Morgue and Horror Buzz are all reliable sources on the subject. What gives me more pause is that it seems likely that you are involved with the movie somehow and thus have a conflict of interest which we want to be aware of and it's unlikely that your article will be accepted before that's cleared up. You've already gotten some information about COIs on your talk page. Could you read through that and disclose any potential conflicts of interest that you have?
Good luck with your article! --Trialpears (talk) 18:22, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
Hi there! Thank you so much for this info! I appreciate your expertise here. I actually am not involved with the project, but I will review the COIs to be sure! Thank you for making this community better (and easier to understand, lol)! IrisSpine (talk) 18:56, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
