Hello Tenryuu, hope you're doing well. I'm not sure how busy you are these days, but wanted put in a request for a copy edit on the Regine Velasquez article if your time allows. The article could benefit improvements on punctuations, grammar, and flow, which I may have missed or erroneously edited. I have greatly admired your copy edit process and how you involve the contributor/user to make sure the edit reflects the intended meaning. I understand that BLPs are a tad lengthy and a challenge to take on and you may be busy with other projects or IRL, so I would totally understand time commitment is limited. Thanks and I hope you are having a great week! Pseud 14 (talk) 19:34, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pseud 14: Hi, and thanks for the kind words! I generally focus on the GOCE's backlog drives in the odd months of the year (January, March, and so on...). I may be able to give it a look once barnstars have been given out for the drive when it ends; possibly sometime early December. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:20, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

December 2021 GOCE Newsletter[edit]

Read
Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Drive and Blitz reports

September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Participation in a signpost interview[edit]

Replied

Hi Tenryuu, hope that you're well. I was wondering if you'd be able to participate in a Signpost interview in your capacity as a contributor to WP:COVID19? I am enthusiastic about these interviews because they help remind other Wikipedians about the passionate and diverse group of volunteers that edit Wikipedia, and into the many discussions and editors that inhabit our space, nooks and crannies. If you had time to even answer a few questions here (User:Tom (LT)/sandbox/WikiProject COVID19 interview draft) I'd be very grateful :). Tom (LT) (talk) 22:42, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Tom (LT): Sorry for the late response. Unfortunately I don't really dabble as much with COVID-related articles compared to when the pandemic first started, and as such feel that my responses wouldn't be as helpful as more active editors in the WikiProject. I've already participated in something similar a year back. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 07:58, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please review my draft?[edit]

Hello, I saw that you had a pass on the Heated tobacco product article. I drafted a new article for Iqos and I would like to submit it to AfC (I am a PMI employee and have a COI)-Can I please ask you to take a look? Feel free to edit, comment as you wish. I look forward to hearing any feedback. Thank you very much in advance. --Aphis Marta (talk) 09:53, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Aphis Marta: Hello. I only work with articles in mainspace, not drafts that are in user sandboxes or draftspace. Copyediting for grammar and spelling are not the main issues reviewers take note of; convince them that your sources are reliable and independent, and that your prose isn't promotional (that tends to be a problem many paid editors have when constructing articles). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:49, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thank you very much, I will go straight to AfC then. Cheers --Aphis Marta (talk) 14:28, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lingam revert.[edit]

Replied

Based on your user page and edits, I don't have any reason to believe you have any knowledge about the subject. Re using wiktionary as a source, I never used wiktionary itself as a source, I rather pointed out that the wiktionary article was sourced. You not only reverted my edit (which only restored objective information which was removed with a really poor explanation) but also reinstated a bad one which made dubious claims such as Shiva being mentioned in the Atharva Veda, AND basically repeated the information which was already in the following para. That compromised the readibility of the article.

The edit that removed the content about śiśnadeva in July, claimed, while vandalizing the page, that śiśnadeva "does not" mean Phallus worshipper/Phallic god but anyone with even a basic knowledge of Sanskrit would know that statement to be untrue. In page 642 of Etymological Dictionary of Old Indo-Aryan, Mayrhofer translates it as: Phallusvehrer which in German means "phallus worshiper". https://archive.org/details/EtymologischesWrterbuchDesAltindoarischenMayrhoferEWA21992/page/n705/mode/2up Then Monier-Monier Williams gives a similar meaning : "Having the generative organ for a god"; a phallus worshipper in column 3 of this page: https://sanskritdictionary.com/scans/?col=1&img=mw1076.jpg

Lastly, the linguist Krishnamurthy also agrees with that interpretation of the term as seen here: https://books.google.co.in/books?id=54fV7Lwu3fMC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q=Phallic&f=false−

Just curious, if you are so keen to play the watchful patroller, where was your helpful vigilantism when the page was actually vandalized and information removed? -- 2409:4042:4E14:8503:0:0:EA08:C0F (talk) 01:29, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just because the Wiktionary page has a source doesn't mean you can just say "oh the Wiktionary page has a source, go look at it"; information must be sourced directly; if you don't know how to do that, please see WP:REFBEGIN. I don't have a particular interest in the subject, but it's been on my watchlist because it has been incredibly unstable over the past year with unsourced assertions.
Rather than making snide remarks that are of no interest to anyone, how about you raise your concerns at Talk:Lingam? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:50, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
...and then have the issue stalled for months due to nobody replying. The Rigveda interpretation is pretty much unanimous as I showed you, so I'll be just reinstating my edit by citing the above 3 souces (ie, Mayrhofer, Monier Williams and Krishnamurthy) this time (these 3 are well accepted academic sources by the way, not some random people making claims on the internet). -- 117.223.60.211 (talk) 05:05, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Grey vs Gray[edit]

Replied

Hey! I saw your comment referring to this on the Teahouse and I figured I would say that, it doesn't always depend whether you're American or not because for me, I usually default to grey instead of gray, despite me having only grown up in the US and having never been outside it. I have, in the past, watched British Youtubers, however hearing them speak shouldn't have really influenced me. So I think it's really just a matter of personal preference. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:30, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Blaze Wolf: It's definitely a preference, but you'll find the styles are skewed by nation in most works. I'm Canadian and I generally use the British variant in my writing, even though most people eschew the extra u in words like colour. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:00, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copy Editing[edit]

Hi! I've been trying my hand at copy editing and I was wondering if you'd be willing to check over a section in an article I worked on. I'm not yet sure if it's ready for the banner removal; I did my best to fix the grammar, but it may need more sourcing. I worked on the section 'History' in the article Glockenspiel. Hi Tenryuu. I recently added some information about the long-standing campaign of revisionism/negationism by the government of the Azerbaijan Republic to this section.[1] Would you be willing to copy-edit this section? I know it might sound like a rather off-beat request, but I would like an experienced editor who's not too heavily involved in this contentious topic area to give it a look. Would appreciate it. If you're uncomfortable with making copy-edits in such articles, please don't hesitate to let me know, and I will try to find someone else. - LouisAragon (talk) 06:28, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For more background info on the republic's state-sponsored negationism: [2] - LouisAragon (talk) 06:28, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@LouisAragon: Hey, I took a look at it and I made some adjustments, though I have a few questions:
  • On the piece, under the banner of Azerbaijani carpet, various forms, motifs and artistic commonalities between Azerbaijan and other nations and ethnicities, including Iranians and Armenians are claimed and appropriated." There's a stray closing quotation mark here; where does the quote begin?
Added, good find.
  • All such cultural initiatives in the Azerbaijan SSR emerged in an environment of relative freedom of expression; a rise of nationalism in the Caucasus region; a fixation on Iran's Azerbaijan region; as well as a surge in rivalry with its Transcaucasian Soviet neighbors, especially Armenia, over "national rights and territory". Already edited. Are you trying to say that the cultural initiatives came from all these different factors, or that they were present within them? Using the preposition in here sounds strange, and from would probably sound better depending on what you mean.
Another great find. Fixed.
Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:40, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Tenryuu. Excuse me for the belated reply. Just replied to the points you raised above, and implemented them. If you have further suggestions to get rid of a few of those quotes, or in general other remarks aimed at improving the readability of the section, feel absolutely free to let me know! - LouisAragon (talk) 21:29, 2 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@LouisAragon: Whoops, seems I neglected to reply to you. There's not really much that I think I'm needed for in that section now. If you're looking to reduce or eliminate quotes, I would suggest asking yourself if it is absolutely essential that the quoted content is needed to describe the exhibition, rather than paraphrasing what can be given due weight. While you have leeway when it comes to quoted content, the tone of the quotes aren't the best for Wikipedia, as they contain some editorial remarks like Of note. Otherwise, hope everything's settled. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 04:47, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, will consider that! - LouisAragon (talk) 23:24, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Features for new users coming soon (and mentors, like you, wanted!)[edit]

Read

Hello. As you're currently listed as a host at the Teahouse, I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.

  • Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
  • There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
  • Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.

To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse, whilst I've had just one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.

If becoming a mentor and being available to help new users on their first few days here interests you - just as have done at the Teahouse in the past - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. But please only do so if you are genuinely willing to be available to help. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences. Thank you! List of sovereign states[edit]

 Done

Hi Tenryuu. I have changed the width of the Legend columns at the bottom of the article List of sovereign states so that the headings would spread out on one line each. Before my edits, the first heading had to wordwrap, making the legend difficult to read, and thus I have added 10px. Could you have a look if this is correct, or perhaps there is a better way to do it, please? Thank you. --89.66.254.10 (talk) 17:30, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP editor. I've rearranged the legend titles and added extra space to keep the two separate as much as possible. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:52, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@S201050066: Your actions make me think you're unable to collaborate with others. You have been told multiple times that Ontario is too small to go onto the main COVID-19 timeline pages, yet you persist in keeping it there. I will tell you one last time: either self-revert your reversions on those pages or let me remove them. If you add it back on, I will report you to the edit warring noticeboard. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:54, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question regarding citation sources[edit]

Replied

While I have done my fair share of copy editing in other places before, I think I may have bitten off a bit more than I can handle with the Sven Melander page. I've cleaned it up a little, but I've noticed that the sources for some info like the names and birthdates of Melander's parents don't seem to actually reference that info. There is what seems to be an official website for the man that does list a lot of this information, but I was wondering how legit we'd consider that as a source. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated! --MaggieAtKryton (talk) 21:48, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MaggieAtKryton: Hello! As a copyeditor you're not expected to correct sources, though you are welcome to do so of your own initiative. If you want to leave it for someone else to check, you may want to use the {{failed verification}} template so that it gets automatically categorised into a maintenance category. For your second concern, the only answer I can give you is it depends. I'm generally leery of official websites, as they're primary sources, which have limited use here on Wikipedia. If it's factual information that is easily verifiable, then it's usually okay, so long as you're not interpreting anything from those details. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:37, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay, good to know! Sometimes copy editing and fact checking get lumped together, so I wasn't sure what the situation would be for Wikipedia or this guild. I'll continue with the rest of the work then and just add it to that template. --MaggieAtKryton (talk) 00:47, 10 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Current GOCE drive[edit]

Replied

Hi, Tenryuu! I've just (finally) signed up as a GOCE member. I would love to help out with the current drive, but I'm not quite comfortable with my skills yet and was wondering if it would be possible for someone to double-check my work as I finish? Perfect4th (talk) 14:08, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Perfect4th! For new(-ish) participants, a coordinator will review some of the copyedits made (Baffle gab1984 is usually the one who does it about halfway into the month); generally 1 out of 10 articles are reviewed. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:18, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Would it still be okay if I asked on the drive talk page for my first article or so to be checked right away so I know if I need to change anything before I do another? Perfect4th (talk) 15:21, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Perfect4th: By all means. Responses to those are usually prompt. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:30, 11 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Tenryuu, hope you're doing well. I know this is one of your busier months, so I wanted to ask ahead of time, if you might be freer next month for a copyedit request? :D That is if you are not involved in other projects, I wanted to ask your help again. Really value your input and edits. I would totally understand otherwise if time commitment is limited. Thanks and I hope you are having a great week so far! Pseud 14 (talk) 20:45, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Pseud 14, I should be freer next month. Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:58, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response! Was wondering if it wouldn't be too much of an ask, since I worked on 2 articles in the last couple months. Tried outside my comfort zone and did a music event article R2K: The Concert which is shorter, and my usual BLP project, this time its Angel Locsin. Happy to wait when you are free and able to take any of them on (if your time allows). P.S. Thanks for your work on Judy Ann Santos which got promoted to FA as well. Pseud 14 (talk) 18:50, 26 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Pseud 14, checking in with GOCE coordinators over post-drive stuff, but I can give R2K: The Concert a look for the time being. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:01, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No worries at all Tenryuu, no rush, and as always I'm very much grateful and I appreciate you taking the time --Pseud 14 (talk) 16:07, 6 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I would like too say that i want to close the 'Concerns' conversation. i wouldn't say i would delete it completely, just modifications to make it more easier. i just wanted people to help me out but none wouldn't . and so i didnt trust the teahouse. but thank you for trying your best to help me anyways! i am really greatful. chao! @BloxyColaSweet: To this day I don't think anyone could understand what you were trying to ask. If you cannot convey what you had a problem with, people at the Teahouse aren't likely to respond to you because we don't want to give you a wrong answer. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:04, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Re. 'Getting a new article to go live'[edit]

Replied

I was puzzled by the response you gave to me in our recent Teahouse exchange - I found your advice rather misleading and I am suspicious that it was intentionally so. I was looking to have my article published and surely for this you might have directed me to the Article Wizard. I came to this conclusion myself after googling the issue. You directed me rather to 'click "Move" in the More dropdown menu at the top of the page,' which resulted only in moving the text to another user page, rather than publishing it. I wonder why you would advise that?

Beryl reid fan (talk) 21:01, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Beryl reid fan: I didn't mention the Article Wizard because you claimed in your Teahouse query that you have implicitly created articles before without any issue, and the AFC process is completely optional; I only suggest it for new users who have a low number of edits who want to jump right away into creating a new article, as many of them are not privy to Wikipedia's guidelines and policies. As you have been around for years and have made more than 30,000 edits (roughly twice as much as me, and I have no interest in wading through all of them), I thought you did not require it as a tool, and that you knew what you were doing.

You directed me rather to 'click "Move" in the More dropdown menu at the top of the page,' which resulted only in moving the text to another user page, rather than publishing it. I wonder why you would advise that?

I would've expected you to notice that the namespace is also selectable from a dropdown menu, which allows you to switch from the User: namespace to mainspace.
Kindly cast off your aspersions and work on your article. If someone sees fundamental issues with it, they will let you know and/or move it into draftspace. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:15, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I wrote 'whenever I create an article, I do it via a red link to an existing name in other articles. However, I have just created a new one..but I'm not sure how to get it out of my sandbox and onto Wikipedia' i.e., I was upfront about my ignorance of procedure. I may have used the Articles Wizard years ago, but I have no memory of it. Otherwise I wouldn't have requested help...Why you would 'would've expected me 'to notice that the namespace is also selectable from a dropdown menu,' I don't know. You presume too much sir (or madam).

Beryl reid fan (talk) 21:34, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Beryl reid fan: I presume a level of basic competence from each editor and time for them to get acquainted with pages they're directed to. In fact, I presume (with a fair amount of confidence) that you would know how to move a page, given how you've moved pages before. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:46, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ah...Yes...Well...I don't believe I've ever moved a User sandbox page, and was stumped by the results. I did say on Teahouse I had tried your suggestion and it hadn't worked, but you didn't reply to me...I am not very technically competent, I'm afraid. I'm dysprraxic and coordinating technical things of this nature can be rather a trial for me... I thought you responded in a bullying manner to my request for help, taking advantage of my vulnerability. But I may be wrong. It's hard to read the situation. If I am I apologise.

Beryl reid fan (talk) 22:58, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Beryl reid fan: As everyone (or almost everyone) is here on a voluntary basis, no one is expected to give an immediate response. I would suggest assuming good faith when possible, as some users, such as myself, get offended when someone accuses them of malicious intent without evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:22, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
