Territories vs State of Palestine

This and this refers. There is a chaotic situation at present with infoboxes for entities in the occupied West Bank (I can show you examples) which is what I was trying to remedy with my edits. That error disappeared on the sites I was looking at once I finished my edits. That Yarmouk article is using some kind of combined map (I suppose there could be others doing similar) and why it throws the error. By the looks of it, instead of renaming/redirecting to fix all at once I will have to create State of Palestine in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Location_map/List from scratch and then fix problem pages one by one. @Mykhal: I can assure you it was not vandalism, the situation is as I explained above. I am not sure why that particular infobox threw the error, it has {{Location map | Palestinian territories in it, which is not the usual thing, the map is correct because Palestinian territories and State of Palestine are the same map but with different names (look at the caption). What is happening on some other pages is that people are writing "Palestine" there and which is redirecting to "Palestinian territories" (again). So is it correct that I need to do State of Palestine from scratch (in the list) and then relevant article pages one by one to fix this up?Selfstudier (talk) 12:50, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello again. Our friend does not like either Template:Convert or Template:Track gauge. He does not consider the latter "mandatory". This is a gross insult to all those who over the years have worked to expand the content of both templates. "Australian usage" has no place in Wikipedia. All other Australian locomotive articles consistently use both. Methinks this fellow needs further and additional education. He has wiped out all my revisions on "his" article as if he owns it. Yeah right. May I suggest that you look at all revisions from the time that I first introduced templates. I could revise again but I don' want to start a war. @Jsframeworkdev: To request a move means to start a discussion saying you think the page should be moved. Anybody can start such a discussion. See Wikipedia:Requested moves#Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. List of chess grandmasters

Thanks for your excellent technical work on List of chess grandmasters. I couldn't figure out how to get both Notes and Obituaries in the compact toc in the correct order, but once I saw your solution it was a real Doh! moment. I couldn't let go of using seealso=yes|notesfirst=yes and that made the section order incorrect in the TOC. Using customN= for all of them rather than only for Revoked Titles and Obituaries should have been obvious, but it wasn't to me until you demonstrated it.

Putting the sorting buttons in a separate row is a very neat trick I had not seen before. Also the soft hyphens are a great refinement. I assume you must have a good tool to do that as it would be a lot of work to find and insert all those hyphenation points by hand.

@Quale: Thanks. I did use some regex to help find long names. I guessed at valid hyphenation points and inserted them by hand. At Talk:List of chess grandmasters#Letter headings in the table you didn't want letter headings. I have since developed a method at User:PrimeHunter/sandbox10 to show the table correctly in section previews. I haven't used it anywhere yet. It would easily break if editors remove some of the code but the source could have warnings not to touch it. Are you interested? There is still no way to hide rows in sorting. I'm very impressed that you put in the effort to add those hyphenation points, even with the help of regex.

We could try letter headings. I thought it was a great idea and new ability to edit by letter heading section would be very helpful, but it made some other things more difficult. We use {{table row counter}} to automatically keep the GMs count up to date in article lead, but most likely we could adjust the ignore parameter to account for extra rows. I'd have to see if it significantly complicated some Python code I use to manipulate the raw wikitext of the table. I don't use that much, but it's helpful when trying things like reordering columns or separating the Federations list column into Federation and Notes. That code is already a bit messy so I don't think accounting for letter headings would be difficult. (Most likely they would just be extra rows to pass through unchanged. My code really only wants to change the table data rows.) Another bummer with letter headings is that they don't interact all that well with table import tools such as Google Sheets IMPORTHTML since the letter heading rows are imported into the spreadsheet. This isn't tragic, but it makes some things harder to do. For example, with extraneous data you can't look at the number of rows and easily equate that to the number of GMs. Finally and most seriously, I rely on being able to use Pandas to import the table to check for new GMs and to do other maintenance. Extraneous rows can mess that up pretty badly, but the very cool column sort buttons you added also adds a row that needs to be accounted for and that only requires a single line of Python. So probably that is easily manageable as well. Now that I've written out my litany of worries, I think they aren't too serious. Quale (talk) 17:04, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

@Quale: I have only added 40 soft hyphens. It wasn't that much work. My method to preview a table section with the rendered table relies on extra code before and after each section heading. You can see it in the source of User:PrimeHunter/sandbox10. Maybe that complicates matters too much. It has never been tried as far as I know. I have also considered trying it at List of United States counties and county equivalents. Maybe that's a better place to start. Many users are probably only interested in one state. Hmm, well maybe my admiration for your effort says more about my laziness rather than your hard work. I haven't tried viewing the page in different window sizes to see how table looks at various resolutions. I'm usually working on a 4K monitor which probably doesn't give me the same view as most visitors to the page. I thought including the letter divisions in the TOC was a very neat trick that might be of most help when using a mobile device, but the TOC doesn't seem to display at all when I use my phone. Maybe the TOC wouldn't actually help much on a small screen.

About dividing the table, I found it harder and slower to orient myself in the table when names were displayed in "First Last" format. Since I changed the names to display "Last, First", I've found it's usually quick and easy to figure out where I am in the list. The sort is much easier to see when the names show in naturally sorted order. It would be nice to be able to edit the list by first letter of last name, though. There have been some concerns over the size of the GMs list page even years ago and recently, but I find the size is actually more of an impediment when trying to edit the table than it is when simply displaying it. For example, when editing the Show preview button seems to take forever to render the table. It also can be hard to find the correct spot to make an edit even using Ctrl-F, so often I resort to copying the wikitext into an external editor and making the changes there. There are probably some Firefox or Chrome extensions that would make that more automatic. Quale (talk) 21:49, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Here is the point I want to make, and did make, perhaps in the wrong place, ie at the style manual talk page: "I think photos, videos, animations, drawings, paintings, or virtual reality or other images in 3D or 2D, that, like most maps, face due north and are labelled accordingly are best. This way, the orientation of things in the picture is made known to the reader.I think photos should by default face due north. Astronomy images, photos or whatever, likewise should come with indication of orientation, so right ascension and declination of a single point are not enough, there needs to be some indication of which way up the image is, which is best provided by indicating which way it is to the celestial north pole. This is especially urgent with images of galaxies and planets which are frequently upside down (not necessarily in Wikipedia) if I can say that (because of how telescopes work, I think). It's an absurd suggestion unless you limit which type of images it applies to. Should a photo of an elephant face north? Who the hell cares? And how do you draw an elephant facing North? Include a compass in the drawing, or a clock and shadow? If you made a more meaningful suggestion then Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Images could be a suitable place but I see you already posted in two other places, one before even asking and one merely nine minutes after. Hello. I see you've added {{String quartet numbers}} to several dabs. Although it's very unusual to have navboxes on dabs and MOS:DABIMG advises against them, I can see the point. I wonder whether it's worth a wider consultation as there are plenty of similar series: Piano Concerto No. 1, Symphony No. 1, etc. Unfortunately we don't have a list of such series (though the navboxes could form a useful category) but most series appear in my contributions here and earlier. Many readers are probably mainly interested in big films from this century but there would only be Avatar and Black Panther. What links here

I noticed a redlink in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Colorado Springs in popular culture, a redirect to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in popular culture, which was recently deleted. Before deleting the link (which comes from {{Main}}), I went to check if there were any more links ([9], [10]) and found none, not even the one I was expecting. That may explain why this link was not deleted when the article was deleted. Can you explain? Is this perhaps a bug with the hatnote template or am I missing something? Thanks. Thank you for reverting my edit to Template:User edits to Wikipedia. I had copied the information from another template, so I thought it was fine. Upon review of your revert, whatever template coding I had copied over, was backwards. The purpose of my edit was to provide a link to Template:User edits to Wikipedia/sandbox, which I had used to test edits that I proposed on its Talk page here. Due to my unfamiliarity with coding templates and the change in template function, I felt asking for approval would be prudent, but the changes that you reverted, I could perform without discussion.

Bad error message from Spamprotectionmatch?

Hi, in Special:Diff/1037745495 you said you tweaked MediaWiki:Spamprotectionmatch to display the offending URL. I'm not sure if this is related, but I recently tried to restore the 8 Oct 2020 version of Synergy Aircraft Synergy and got an error message starting with Your edit was not saved because it contains a new external link to a site registered on Wikipedia's blacklist or Wikimedia's global blacklist. In the body of the message it says "The following link has triggered a protection filter: {{{1}}}". That is, the triple brackets appear literally in the message. Percent encoding problem

Thank you for your help; it's much appreciated. Somehow I found my way the other day from Percent-encoding through I think three other articles to find a long table of % codes, including the "%E2%80%93", but now I seem unable to retrace those steps. The table showed an image of the character - which in this case looked more to me like a truncated hyphen than a standard hyphen - but did not have a column with the character names: hyphen, en dash, etc. This would probably be a useful column to add to that table. Do you know the pagename I'm looking for? (Or maybe the table does have such a column, but my tunnel vision didn't notice it.)

Whether I can get to a wanted article or section within the article is not the issue; I need to have a workable URL that I can distribute to other people, regardless of how they individually access Wikipedia. I've sent out your suggested fix, and am waiting to hear back about whether it works for them. As I said, it's only in Wikipedia that this problem ever arises. Thanks again. @Milkunderwood: I don't know which page you refer to. Unicode has around 144,000 characters so I guess it wasn't an exhaustive list. You can copy-paste a character or string to the "Characters" field at https://r12a.github.io/app-conversion/ and click "Convert" to get the percent-encoding. If the string already has percent encoded characters then it breaks because it will percent encode the percent signs. "View in UniView" shows character names. If you share a Wikipedia url then the result for others can depend both on your and their software. The safest method is if you can share a working link instead of a raw url. If you share via email then a link requires a html email and not a plain text mail. PrimeHunter (talk)

Yes, I email in HTML. The first report I've got back from changing the "#" to "%23", as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlem_Renaissance_theater_companies%23Lafayette_Players_(1916%E2%80%931932), for this person goes to neither the top of page Harlem Renaissance, nor to the Lafayette Players section, but instead to the listing of Lafayette Players in the article's table of contents. I'm not sure what to make of that - never seen it happen before - but I guess it's good enough. At least in this particular instance the wanted section is very near the top, and easily findable. Search box question

There are these three articles: Balloon (2017 film), Balloon (2018 film), and Balloon (2019 film). I started typing the name into the search box and after typing "Balloon (2", the matching article list updates to show the 2017 and the 2019 films first. However, the 2018 film is missing and does not appear until entering the complete title with end ending ")" in the search box. This doesn't seem right. Do you know why? Thanks. Category / template interaction

I found that Sarwar Danish was in Category:Articles with invalid date parameter in template today. It was tagged with both {{BLP unsourced}} and {{Prod blp/dated}}. Both had different dates - the article was in Category:Unreferenced BLPs from September 2021 and Category:Unreferenced BLPs from October 2014. The list of categories in the article did not include "invalid date", but it you went to the category it was there (this persisted for hours, so didn't seem to be from some update lag). As an experiment, I re-ordered the tags in the article and then the article was no longer in "invalid date". This seems to be a very minor bug in something. Any thoughts? @MB: {{BLP unsourced|date=October 2014}} produced the error category when Category:Unreferenced BLPs from October 2014 didn't exist. The category was created four hours ago. If an article changes categories without being edited then it's common that the category list on the article is updated long before the category page. This is deliberate for efficiency reasons in MediaWiki. A purge of the article will not update the category page but a null edit (or any edit like yours) will. Follow-up question. How did that category get created? Manually or automatically? I am asking because sometimes I will find an article tagged for some dated maintenance category that doesn't exist. I usually just change the date to the current month (considering it to be the date the tag was first applied). But other editors sometimes use the date field for the earliest time the condition existed (e.g. when the article was created). If that happens to be a redlink category for the particular month/year - will it get created automatically. I'm not aware of any bot that does this. MB 23:47, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@MB: Category pages have page histories. They don't show pages being added and removed but they do show creation. Category:Unreferenced BLPs from October 2014 was created by AnomieBOT. User:AnomieBOT#Current includes "DatedCategoryCreator". PrimeHunter (talk) 01:03, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

OK, that led me to the documentation for the bot. It does create these automatically, So if I find an article in the invalid date category, I can just let the bot create the cat (if it is really a valid month/year that just doesn't exist - Most of the time it is something else like "Sep 2021" or "Sept 2021" instead of "September 2021"). I had an odd thought about Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Masters M85 triple jump world record progression

If I understand Trackinfo's big objection, the software has some capability limitations when ultra-large articles (like List of world records in masters athletics) are necessarily created and tended. I take as AGF there's an actual concern, but I haven't seen it play out like that editor reports they've witnessed. I was wondering: Is there some way that Template:Excerpt or Labeled section transclusion could help us build a smarter overall page? FTR, as I looked through this masters stuff, it seems almost all these articles need to be sub-categorized (by age group and discipline) from Category:Masters athletics world record progressions. I'm not a subject matter expert in any way but it seems to me that all masters wr progressions ARE wr progressions and as such should all be on one page, by discipline. By section transcluding a fully complete table, fully editable at the appropriate wr progressions page, we could make the ultra-large page merely a repository of the relevant excerpts. Ultra large page now quite compact. Best of all, only one page needs updating when the record is broken. Am I missing something obvious? BusterD (talk) 19:25, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

@BusterD: I think Trackinfo's objections are about convenience for editors (at least himself, I'm not sure others agree), concern that section links may break, and a belief that there is nothing problematic with a huge number of 1 kB articles. The proposed mergers by discipline would be around 10 kB, far below any software limitations. Nobody has suggested that all 400+ articles for disciplines and age classes should be merged to a single ultra-large article. At User talk:Trackinfo/Archive 3#Masters world record progressions I suggested to make separate mergers by discipline and by age class, using section transclusion in the latter so the progressions only have to be maintained in the former. The only large page is List of world records in masters athletics which doesn't have record progressions and is maintained separately. It currently has another format than the record progressions and could not be made by labeled section transclusion of the current record from the record progressions. Is there a regular expression that will add link brackets to text in each cell in a column?

When I update the whole table the regions and subregions are no longer linked.

Others have shown me a couple ways (in Excel and LibreOffice Calc) to pull only the latest year for each country in the source spreadsheet.

But the table ends up without links. I use your method to add flags and links quickly to the first column:

@Timeshifter: Tables can use different syntax and regex is sensitive to details. The following is only lightly tested and assumes the syntax is a whole table row in one source line starting with a pipe and with double pipe between cells. Use preview and show changes before saving.

To wikilink the nth declared cell in each row:

Let m = n-1

Search for: ^(\|(.*?\|\|){m} *)(.*?)( *\|\|| *\n)

Replace with: $1[[$3]]$4

Enable "Treat search string as a regular expression"

Click "Replace all"

In your example, the row number is not declared as a cell in the source so the region is the 2nd declared cell and can be linked with m = 1. If a table uses rowspan or colspan then the nth declared cell in a row may not be displayed in the nth column of the table. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:12, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

I had gotten the regions linked by substituting 1 for m, and 2 for n.

But it did not work for subregions when I substituted 2 for m, and 3 for n.

Now I see that I only have to substitute for m.

How Can One Article Be Merged With Another?

I would like to suggest that the Gather 'Round page be merged with the Paul M. Lally page. Mr. Lally hosted the short lived Gather 'Round PBS series and also served as the series' narrator. Again, I suggest that these be merged together.
