TWA code

Hi again, Happy New Year! Thanks for helping out with my previous TWA-related query - would you happen to know if/where The Wikipedia Adventure's code repo is? WSS prime non-existence proof

Hey Jens! I wondered what you made of that non-existence proof. PD seem to be going out of their way to insult everyone who interacts with them. And as far as inclusion of the material in Wikipedia goes, it of course does not matter if that proof is valid, invalid, or simply nonsense, as long as there are no reliable sources which support its conclusion. But I figured that if the proof were tractable then it might be of interest to you. I follow most of the individual statements, but don't follow the logic, though it's been a long time since I've done any number theory. 1CA now set to "off by default"

Hi PrimeHunter. I was trying out an Android at 4:07 on Friday and I guess I accidentally clicked archive at the same time I saved an edit at VPT. The archive link is very small on the Android and very close to the submit link. To that end I have now set 1CA to "1CA off by default" since I rarely use 1AC and only on my own Talk page.

As an aside, why does the VPT archive go to the "wrong" archive when using 1CA? 1CA just sends things to the latest archive increment in the archive script on the particular Talk page. PS: 1CA=One Click Archive. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 01:40, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

1CA is pretty nifty. I think the blocked author was a consultant for 1CA and made a parallel version to implement his/her version of how it should work. Too bad s/he got blocked. S/he used to be a very prolific helper on Wikipedia. That is all I know about that situation except I did glean s/he was blocked for mis-using multiple accounts. A question about the "User Wikipedian for" template

Hi PrimeHunter.  I have a question concerning templates.  Is it permissible to subst the  "User Wikipedian for" ( {{User Wikipedian For|year=2015|month=5|day=1}} )  template?  The purpose would be to change the colors to something other than the normal (purple) color.  Just to be clear, I'm talking about substing it, saving the page, and then editing the actual wiki code for the template right on my own user page; it would not in any way affect the template for anyone else.  I need to know if there is a policy prohibiting it (or a guideline discouraging it). Also if it is permissible, does that generally apply to all or most templates designed to be used by users in their own user space? Thank you.

@Richard27182: There is no problem in that. You have a lot of freedom in your userspace and can generally do this there. Templates sometimes have undocumented parameters you can see in the template source. The source of {{User Wikipedian for}} says:

Code like border-c = {{{border|#8d40b3}}} means you can override the default color #8d40b3 by using the parameter |border=. Same for imgbg and bgcolor. Here is an exampel using named colors but you can also use hex triplets like the default colors:

Hi PrimeHunter.  Thank you for your prompt and very informative reply.  I'm glad you mentioned about being able to use added parameters in the normal use of the template to obtain the desired effect without even having to subst the template; in fact that's how I'll probably do it in this case.  But it's also nice to know that, in those cases where substing and editing the template wikicode (in my own user space) would be necessary, it would be OK to do.  Again, my thanks and appreciation.

A copyright question

Hi PrimeHunter.  (For the sake of full disclosure, I just want to mention that I'm asking one or two other administrators this same question.)  In a Wikipedia article about a motion picture, how closely can the plot summary duplicate the plot summary from the Turner Classic Movies website.  Is it OK if it reads basically the same with some words changed here and there?  Or would that be a copyright violation?  I'm asking because I noticed that (as of this writing [11:45, 16 February 2016 (UTC)]) the Plot section of the Wake of the Red Witch article is extremely similar to the plot summary for that film on the website TCM.COM (click READ THE FULL SYNOPSIS).  (There is actually a reference to the TCM website at the end of the Plot section.)   I doubt that it's a problem, because the Wikipedia article has been that way since December of 2008; and I imagine that if there were a problem it would have been detected and corrected by now.  Nevertheless, I'm curious.  Thanks; I appreciate your time.

Purge needed for India ink

Thanks. I looked at that WP:Purge page when you first mentioned it, relating to Poi. I'm a passer-by, not a dedicated WP editor - I don't even know what "transclude" means, and don't want to know. I stumbled upon two of these things in a row, and it's not my job to fix WP's markup language screwups. Not your job either, of course. I'm happy to leave them be. Sorry if I seem to have a bad attitude - I do fix a lot of easy things as I come across them, but purging is outside of my pay grade. The real issue is, it shouldn't be happening at all, for you, me, or anyone else to have to clean up. With Poi, it wasn't an editor making a mistake, it happened (as far as I could see) from a bot. I don't do bots, either. I come here not to write, with a very few years-old exceptions, but just to look stuff up and read. You say it's a recent issue. @Milkunderwood: I have purged India ink. One way to do it is to add ?action=purge to the url. I have enabled 'Add a "Purge" option to the top of the page, which purges the page's cache' at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. Thanks for your help. You understand my point is that it shouldn't be happening at all to start with, rather than providing a fix that non-editors (much less noobs) would have to grapple with. It's whatever in the markup language itself that's making this happen that needs to be fixed; purge is just a workaround for individual articles. If it's a recent issue - and it does appear to be - somebody coded it badly. That's what I meant by "upstairs"; users have no interest in phab:T124356. There shouldn't even be a gadget - it ought work correctly internally, all by itself (just like it used to). Neither you nor anyone else wants to go around purging pages, much less trying to explain to users like me how to do it. Milkunderwood (talk) 18:12, 5 March 2016 (UTC)

I often purge pages for different reasons. This recent issue is just one of them. I find it handy to have a one-click purge option. If the software always worked 100% correctly then purging would still be useful sometimes to update a page after a used template has been edited. Followup Rollback question

Hello PrimeHunter! I saw your recent post to the Help Desk, and it prompts a question. First, let me admit upfront that I don't have Rollback. And one of the reasons I've never bothered with it is because I don't want Rollback links in page histories, Contribs page, or Watchlists! In short, I'd only want to see the Rollback link on a 'diff' page. So, with that in mind, what would the requisite common.css code need to be if I just wanted to see Rollback links on diff pages (only!) look like? Hello PrimeHunter, how would one go about matching a particular url from a body of text using regex? See Wikipedia:Help desk#List of Essential Mix episodes. For eg., if I wanted to remove both [http://core.thomaslaupstad.com/bbc-radio-1-essential-mix-2010-09-04-swedish-house-mafia-at-creamfields-2010/ Mixes] and [http://er7radio.net/?p=3699 Mixes] in this version, what would be the regex to find everything between "[http://" and "Mixes]" and replace it with white space? - NQ (talk) 18:18, 30 April 2016 (UTC)

Women's Action Coalition and the editor who espouses the cause

Thanks for joining in on TEA's talk page. I am having a good break from WP after Wikiburnout, and am concentrating on the other things in my life that also were the reason for my withdrawal from ArbCom elections. At present my circumstances mean I would not have been able to do justice to that job at all, which would have been grossly unfair to the community had I been elected.

I do not have the patience at present that I usually have, and cannot be a positive influence in helping this editor, who has reappeared on my talk page. I think they have a limited understanding of WP, and would benefit from their hand being held a little. I hope you may be able to guide them in the correct direction. I'd like to be able to help them myself, but cannot summon the patience genie from its bottle right now. At least I know what I cannot do!

I have zero familiarity with Wiki and am utterly sympathetic to philosophical and technical complexities, exhaustions and misery of dealing with WIKI-illits like myself.

Questions: 1) As published author can I contribute to entry that appears? 2)If not can I sugest to Taylor Kuhn (who I only know from interview that she edit using her more accomplished entry to that which has been accepted? 3) Does WIKI still 'possess' a copy of Taylor Kuhn's submission?

MediaWiki displaytitle updates

Hi, I believe updates need to be made to MediaWiki:Duplicate-displaytitle and MediaWiki:Restricted-displaytitle, because a page like User talk:Amortias is not showing up at Category:Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications. I think it's due to the non-ASCII characters used for sorting on the MediaWiki page itself, and the categories don't sort those extra symbols.

The fix would simply be changing those characters to alphanumerics. Does this sound right? — Andy W. (talk · ctb) 01:02, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

@Andy M. Wang: Category:Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications takes time to autopopulate. User talk:Amortias showed up after I made a null edit. In some circumstances like a purge a page can have a category at the bottom without the category displaying the page. A null edit updates the required link tables. I'm not sure why all pages sort under N. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:19, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

Looks like there are numerous titles that will not show up until edited. Would it make sense to sort pages of particular namespaces (such as User space or others you might see fit) to a different cat/subcategory? @Andy M. Wang: Pages show up when they are edited or some time after a used template is edited, or when the link tables for the page are updated for some other reason. I have made many attempts [1] to sort by namespace but none of them worked. The magic words like {{NAMESPACE}} don't work normally in MediaWiki:Restricted-displaytitle, probably because it's a MediaWiki message evaluated in a special way. The current code says [[Category:Pages with disallowed DISPLAYTITLE modifications|{{NAMESPACE}} {{PAGENAME}}]] so userspace should sort under "U" but that doesn't happen. phab:T135949 and gerrit:290071 say the MediaWiki software itself will soon add pages to a tracking category. I don't know whether this category will allow namespace dependent sorting but the software should be installed here later today so we can soon test it. There are other options like fixing the userspace cases with semiautomated removal or commenting out of all DISPLAYTITLE but let's wait and see. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:30, 26 May 2016 (UTC)

I directed pages to the existing category by creating MediaWiki:Restricted-displaytitle-ignored. The feature does not make namespace dependent sorting and I can see no way to do it in the category but I have added a link to only display articles.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 10:14, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

@White Arabian Filly: alt text has a function in rendered pages so it must be part of |image=[[File:...|alt=...]] in calls of the template. Some infoboxes build the file syntax from multiple parameters but Template:Infobox equestrian event expects the image parameter to have fully formatted file syntax so the template should not have an alt parameter. Callers can make their own alt if they want. The infobox here has image = [[File:Pur sang arabe - Haras de Kabyuk (Bulgarie).jpg|200px|alt=A white horse]]. Your browser may display "A white horse" when you hover over the image. Screen readers for blind users may read it out. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:53, 17 June 2016 (UTC)

I added an old version of the awards list to List of Pixar awards and nominations (feature films) for the consistency of the tables in the list. @FrB.TG: You are badly breaking the history revisions for no reason. See for example [4]. I'm at 3 reverts so I'm not reverting you again but if you don't restore </onlyinclude> in [5] then I'm bringing in others. See also Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle. The code has no effect on the article itself so I don't understand your obsession with removing it. If you do remove onlyinclude tags then please remove both the starting and ending tag since it gets worse when you only remove the end. I also oppose the code duplication in [6] instead of using transclusion. There is no good reason to force editors to maintain almost the same content in two places. A minor table formatting difference is not a good reason to me. If problems are fixed or content improved in one of the places then the other will often be overlooked. Golomb Sequence edit

Hi PrimeHunter:

This is Re: editing the Golomb sequence article and I attach your response below. If it isn't stated that it is the [b]smallest[/b] unique integer that satisfies this condition then this seems to be a possible sequence as well:

n = 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 a_n= 1 3 2 2 2 3 4

On the OEIS it says that 'it is understood that a_n is taken to be the smallest number > a_(n-1)' This is not obvious from the definition on the page currently and certainly caused me some problems which is why I was spurred to make the change.

Do you have access to a proof/argument that says that the problem statement as is implies that a_2 must be == 2 or am I missing something/misunderstanding something?

@Asyepifanov: The opening sentence in Golomb sequence says: "a non-decreasing integer sequence", so a_n ≥ a_n-1 by definition. a_n says how many n's the sequence must have and since the sequence is non-decreasing, they must be consecutive and come before larger numbers. Palindrome

Hi! I mean that most English palindromes aren't palindromes acoustic. "Eye" should actually be written "ai". "Easy" is a palindrome acoustic ("iisii"), but You write the phonem /i/ with three different letters. Été is a French phonemic word like nearly all Finnish and Estonian palindromes. A later section might mention them but the article lead shouldn't give the impression that a written palindrome is a special kind of palindrome. The roman languages, like Latin, Spanish and Italian are much more phonemic than English. The magic of Sator Arepo... is based on not only writing but pronouncing, too. English palindromes actually are formed of ancient writing mistakes under French influence. The Normans hardly spoke English. There's no logic writing "iivils liv" as "evils live"! RevisionSlider & WikEdDiff interaction

Hi! You are receiving this message as it looks like you have a copy of the WikEdDiff user script in your user space on this wiki.

When using the RevisionSlider and WikEdDiff together WikEdDiff will not function correctly when the RevisionSlider is used to load a new diff. This can be fixed by adding a simple hook listener to your copy.

During a deployment slot today the RevisionSlider extension will be turned on as a beta feature on all wikis.

For the first week the RevisionSlider will be deployed with a 'hack' that will mean WikEdDiff will continue to work, but on the 21st and 22nd of September this 'hack' will be removed.

You can find the relevant phabricator ticket here which contains the code that you will need to add to your copy of the script (in most cases). Please also use this ticket for further questions & discussion.

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, PrimeHunter. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. Primitive part definition

Can you please explain the contradictory definition by Pomerance/Wagner? https://math.dartmouth.edu/~carlp/fibinttalk.pdf According to the Pomerance/Wagner pre-print cited at OEIS https://oeis.org/A061446, the primitive part is always the product of primitive prime factors. This product dividing the symbol phi(n). Most of the time phi(n) is the primitive part depending on the form of n. This agrees with Chris Caldwell's definition, where he says the symbol phi(n) is the primitive part(or Primitive factor, ie not the primitive part).

Today it worked again. No idea what's going on.

There is no way to delete a "cookie" in the Safari browser on iOS. However, it occurred to me (didn't find this online, though I didn't look exhaustively) that you can delete passwords individually, which I suspect amounts to the same thing. So I'm deleting all saved passwords for wikipedia and related sites. Strangely, there are duplicates. I'll let you know the results.

FYI, iOS has no directories in which to save or delete cookies and other files. There is no File Explorer. Each app has its sandbox and it can create and delete anything there, but cannot delete files in any other app's sandbox. There's no such thing as a disk cleanup.

(Of course there are directories, but you need a developers' password to see them or do anything with them. That's paternalistic Apple. And there are "memory cleanups" which amount to about the same as a disk cleanup, since iOS has no physical disks, and if there are virtual ones they're invisible and inaccessible to Users, like me. Google Drive and Dropbox are apps that will give you a familiar directory structure, although the interface with iOS - the apps - is flaky.)

@Karst: I'm also confused. MediaWiki treats it in a confusing inconsistent way. W: is an interwiki prefix for the Wikipedia in the same language as the wiki you are currently at. For example, at wikt:de: it goes to de:. WP:NC-COLON says:

• Article titles cannot begin with an interwiki or interlanguage prefix, or namespace alias.

W:/2016ALBUM/ apparently falls through a crack somewhere when it's used at the wiki W: points to. Some features work as expected, some in another way as expected, and some not at all. It displays as /2016ALBUM/ in Category:Deadmau5 albums. Here in user talk [[/2016ALBUM/]] produces a subpage link 2016ALBUM. In mainspace where subpages are disabled it works as a wikilink to W:/2016ALBUM/. Special:Prefixindex/W: lists articles starting with "Main Page". W:/2016ALBUM/ displays W: in the title but not the url. [[Talk:W:/2016ALBUM/]] doesn't work (I didn't nowiki that). Talk:/2016ALBUM/ works but doesn't display W: in the title. It's a big mess. I suggest another name like "W /2016ALBUM/" with this:

My edit was to avoid a regular table with it's visible grid lines, and to preserve the "simple" comma delimited list style and yet allow easier review and comparison of the component numbers

With all due respect, addressing your edit summary points:

1. I thought of that and already tested copy/paste works just fine at OEIS-- you made an assertion w/o even testing
2. How does it look bad? I need reading glasses and a tabular array, w/o HTML grid to preserve the "simple" list style, retaining the commas, is easier to see and compare the numbers, versus your revert looks like some pile-on representing visually some single mega-quad-jillian google-google number to the eye "7,663,2121,..."
3. Screen reader, Window built-in "assist", sees/reads the same comma delimited list as before, why what does your screen reader see/read?? Or is that only another assertion?
4. Wait, what random width-- try reloading the page with table-- it comes up neat and tabular in my browser/Chrome-- or is that your attempt at misunderstanding the use of non-breaking-space to ensure table columns have extra clarity between the numbers? To minimse that run-together effect of the original list

1. I did test it. If I copy your table in Firefox and search it in OEIS:A074282 with Ctrl+F then it fails. I have to compare the numbers one at time. It's the same if I copy the list from OEIS and use Ctrl+F on your table. People copying the data elsewhere, for example to a primality testing program or a text file, are also likely to have problems. A list is harder to use when it's not actually a list.
2. A comma-separated list looks bad with varying spaces between elements. A table aligns columns but there is no connection between numbers in the same column so there is no need to align them. The list has one space between each element. That's the normal way to write any comma-separated list.
3. I don't have a screen reader and said "probably". Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Tables#Accessibility indicates screen readers have special table navigation features but your table is not meant to be navigated as a table since it's just an unusual way to present a list. Commas to separate table cells also seems very odd but I don't know how screen readers treat it. There is also a risk that some of our reusers will place it in a table with visible borders which will make the commas look awful.
4. The 5×6 table layout is unrelated to the data. There is no logical reason to use 5 rows or 6 columns, or any other number of rows and columns. These are "random" table dimensions for something which is just a list with 30 elements. The user's browser will adjust a real list nicely to the window width so you don't get a lot of blank space, or have to scroll horizontally on a narrow mobile device.

We probably have OEIS lists in hundreds of articles. I have never seen anybody place them in a table before unless the table format is used for something relevant to the list.
