I was disappointed to read the comment you wrote when you reject the submission of Bruno Gouery. It spoke of major roles, sustained coverage and good sources. None of those terms appear in the criteria for notability. They appear to me to that they imply a higher standard than the Wikipedia guidelines for notability.

The basic criteria for notability is "People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject."

Bruno has been the subject of articles on

uproxx.com gettotext.com yourtango.com

Those may not be good sources but they certainly meet the criteria for reliability.

In addition the context specific criteria for notability says "People are likely to be notable if they meet any of the following standards. Actors...

had significant roles in multiple notable films, television shows, stage performances, or other productions."

Bruno has had significant roles in Emily in Paris and The White Lotus. For the latter the Screen Actors Guild deemed his role significant enough to include him on the nomination for the Best Ensemble Cast Award. While that may not be a major role it certainly seems to meet any reasonable definition of significant.

@Uwhoff: thank you for reaching out. As you rightly point out, coverage must be significant (i.e. in-depth), reliable and independent. Remember that all three criteria must be met at the same time. When I reviewed your draft, the requirement for significance coverage was not met. In this case, reliability and independence do not make up for a lack of depth. Concerning the subject's film roles: his role in The White Lotus was as a recurring cast member in Season 2. A role of that kind is not normally considered significant. Someone has (correctly) declined the speedy deletion nomination. I realise that some articles that have been published on here have deficits in the sourcing department. WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

@Moulie666: thank you for reaching out. Your article was deleted because it portrayed its subject in a way that was indistinguishable from promotion. Wikipedia aims to write in a neutral fashion, which makes statements like "who has been breaking boundaries in the field of wildlife photography" and "[his] passion for nature photography has made him a notable figure in the world of wildlife photography, inspiring other photographers to explore the wonders of nature" contrary to the purpose of the project. WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Hello,
This article had been reviewed and accepted several times in the past. I don't see the rationale of deleting it since there are multiple reliable sources describing the subject in depth including an entry on Treccani, some facts checked on Tv Guide and a biography on Rotten Tomatoes as well as several secondary sources related to his involvement in Climate Change Theatre and to his affiliation with Method acting. @Crispycali: since I was not involved in any of the four deletions of the article, this might not be the best place to ask this and I would encourage you to approach the administrators who carried out the deletions. The main problem seems to be that the article was deleted once as the result of a discussion (see here) and that it was then twice re-created by blocked or banned users. These repeated troubles surrounding the article have led Muboshgu to prevent it from being created again for the time being. Modussiccandi (talk) 22:53, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

@BeanieFan11: I have mulled your request but have decided not to revert the close. Your request for participation seems not to have gathered a lot of momentum and I didn't attribute a lot of weight to the final !vote anyway since simply invoking 'per X' is not usually terribly convincing. When the discussion had run its course, there was a consensus for deletion and I see no point in resisting on speculative grounds.   • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

@Skballia: the best way to go about this is to create a draft of the proposed article which uses as its sources high-quality journalistic work about the company. I hope you are keeping well: I've put in the article Temple of Apollo Palatinus for Peer Review, with a view to taking it to FAC in the near-ish future. There's some somewhat tricky issues in the architecture and archaeology of the site, and a lot of Augustan background - if you're able to cast a classicist's eye over it, particularly as to how these bits have been handled, I would be most grateful. That would be great: a slot's just opened up for it at FAC now that Ludwig Ross has passed, so your timing is excellent. I'm particularly interested in feedback on the architecture section, which is necessarily a bit technical: there's a delicate balance between explaining things and not crowding it with bracketed definitions and explanations, and any thoughts or guidance there would be greatly appreciated. For Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Philodoppides. (I've already thanked Poimenlaon for the initial spot.) I still remember the mixture of admiration and fury I felt when I uncovered a longstanding well-constructed obscure biographical hoax, and how long it took me to be certain. At least "Bilitis", "Ossian" and "Rowley" wrote some decent poetry.

Out of curiosity, is "doppides" a plausible name element? I have some Latin but no Greek worth speaking of, but it feels wrong to me. Narky Blert (talk) 16:33, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

@Narky Blert: how kind of you! And thank you for giving one to Poimenlaon, who deserves it most. I'm really glad we caught this one. You are right, '-doppides' isn't a common element in Greek names; is seems to be a 'play' on the exceedingly common hipp- (meaning 'horse') found in aristocratic names like Hipparchus (brother of Hippias). Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.
