using Magog the Ogre's move to commons assistant?!

Hello, I have seen several times that when you deleted local images, you taged them manualy or automatic as "deleted page File:?????.jpg (F8: File available on Wikimedia Commons under the same name (using Magog the Ogre's move to commons assistant: report errors here)"

if you have not moved a file to commons you should not use/add such sentence. Regards --Editor-1 (talk) 03:28, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

@Editor-1: I'm not sure what's more amazing to me. a) The brazenness of your tone in ordering me around; b) the fact that you, a newbie, see fit to tell me how to do something which I've done for 10 years; or c) that you accomplished all of this without the slightest clue what you're talking about. Magog the Ogre (tc) 20:05, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
I'm sorry I don't understand what are you talking about, I just saw the incorect sentence which says "using Magog the Ogre's move to commons assistant" which implies that you was the one who moved the file to commons, and thought that because such sentence can cause *wrong impression*, it is better to report it, because the tag says "...... report errors here" (your talk page); I hope you understand what I am talking about. Regards--Editor-1 (talk) 04:10, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
@Editor-1: ok, I see now, a simple miscommunication. Move to Commons assistant is the name of the tool I use which helps me find images that were already moved, then I perform the deletion. Maybe I should rename it. Magog the Ogre (tc) 18:46, 6 March 2020 (UTC)
"which helps me find images that were already moved" But it sounds more you was using it to move the file to commons, nobody think that it is for "find images that were already moved", I am completely unable to understand what is the point to use such tool for that purpose, and also why such a lengthy and misleading sentence "(using Magog the Ogre's move to commons assistant: report errors here)" is always added to edit summary, because per Template:Now Commons there are well defined categories for this purpose:
* Category:Wikipedia files with the same name on Wikimedia Commons
* Category:Wikipedia files with a different name on Wikimedia Commons
* Category:Wikipedia files on Wikimedia Commons
I think it's better to completely put aside that tool, or if you still have insistency to use it, atleast don't enter/add any edit summary. Regards--Editor-1 (talk) 04:59, 7 March 2020 (UTC)
@Editor-1: "I think it's better to completely put aside that tool" - you know nothing about this process. I've been using the tool for 10 years, and you, who know nothing about it, is going to come and tell me to stop? You aren't going to get far on this project (or in life) with that sort of hubris. If you have questions, I'm willing to answer them. But please don't come back on my talk page again with that attitude. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:49, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

Sir I hadn't intention to offend or command to you, have you read my other words?! there is a real problem here, and I will be grateful if you solve it, as you know appropriate, thanks.--Editor-1 (talk) 06:02, 16 March 2020 (UTC)

File:Toronto from John street roundhouse.JPG

Good day User:Magog the Ogre! Hope you are all safe there in the midst of this COVID-19 malaise. May I request you to delete the two old file versions of File:Toronto from John street roundhouse.JPG? I cannot transfer it to Commons via FileEx/Importer feature because of a technical error, and I suspect the two old versions are corrupted. Thanks and stay safe! :-) JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 05:09, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Portrait of Lev Shnirelman

The file File:Шнірельман Лев Генріхович..jpg has been deleted (Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Шнірельман Лев Генріхович..jpg).

And I recently copied your note from the image's talk page at Commons - may be you'd like to see it: User talk:CiaPan#Portrait of Schnirelman. --CiaPan (talk) 16:41, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

Regarding a request

Hi Magog the Ogre, please unblock me on Wikimedia. Give me one chance. I'll never violate the Wikimedia standards. - MRRaja001 (talk) 13:32, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!

Portrait of Schnirelman

Hi, Magog! Possibly you remember you've put a note in Commons at the talk pagge of Lev Schnirelman's portrait. The file has been deleted (c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Шнірельман Лев Генріхович..jpg), and you comment disappeared as well. However, I made a copy of it at my talk page just four days prior to the deletion. If you want to recall it, please visit my talk page: User talk:CiaPan#Portrait of Schnirelman
Best regards :) CiaPan (talk) 00:56, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Regarding the speedy deletion of few images

So can I use the images as a piece of reliable info once again? If so what should I do to not get the images as "speedy deletion" again? I tried to fill up the Summary of the images, and license them but somehow I don't really even get the cause of why they are not being allowed to be posted. --Dardania0 (talk) 9:01, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Magog, just wanted to let you know I've restored this image you deleted. It should not have been moved to Commons in the first place, as the license the uploader there used is wrong. The photo is not the work of the US Navy, as one can see in the source description page. As such, the image should remain on en.wiki, since the photo is PD in the US as part of the NHHC's collection. Thanks. Parsecboy (talk) 10:33, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

@Parsecboy: I try to take care with the images I delete, but that is complex enough it would fly under my radar. I recommend adding a {{KeepLocal}} tag to anything you don't want transferred. You can also tag something as {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} if it's public domain in the US but not in its home nation, thus making it ineligible for transfer. Magog the Ogre (tc) 23:02, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Magog. I have started using the keeplocal template on situations like that, but apparently forgot on that one. Parsecboy (talk) 00:31, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi! This file is copied to hi.wiki but with no good source etc. Can you check if there is anything useful that should be copied to hi:चित्र:BhopSinghGurjarPathikJi.jpg? Or even better if the file is okay then move it to Commons. --MGA73 (talk) 21:37, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

@MGA73: It was a postcard scan. All the information in the upload log is as it read on the page: link. The postcard is overcompressed but it looks like the postmark year says 1952 or 1982. Do you think it's a drawing or a photo? If it's a photo, Commons will take it since it's PD in India, although not the US. Magog the Ogre (tc) 23:04, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! You must be able to see more in the scan that I can see because I can't see a postcard. But since he died in 1954 I think it is more likely it is 1952. You are right that it also could be a drawing and not a photo. Since the quality is bad it is not easy to tell. But I think drawings should have some more sharp lines. I think it looks more like a scan of a photo where the attempt to clean up the photo did not go well. Or they have a special taste of photos in India - see this for example hi:चित्र:KishoriDasVajpeyi.jpg. --MGA73 (talk) 07:16, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
@MGA73: I've restored it temporarily so you can see it. Personally I think it's a drawing. Magog the Ogre (tc) 13:15, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! I have the info I need for now. --MGA73 (talk) 13:45, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
I found a better version at https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/lE4AAOSwgwReZNnW/s-l1600.jpg --MGA73 (talk) 14:06, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
Ah yes that is the original. I still lean toward drawing. Magog the Ogre (tc) 15:39, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Argentine film images

Can you please withdraw them, see the discussion on the image you notified me about, cinematographic images are perfectly fine, 3rd line down.† Encyclopædius 21:03, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

@Encyclopædius: I wish you'd brought this up on the Commons DR. I will notify the deleting admin. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:17, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
Actually, no, I was right. Article 34, the same one which lists photographs for 20 years after publication states "[p]ara las obras cinematográficas el derecho de propiedad es de cincuenta años a partir del fallecimiento del último de los colaboradores." -> "For cinematic works, the copyright is fifty years after the death of the last contributor." Copyright logos

Hello, Magog the Ogre. Hope you're doing great. I've seen that user Wladimyr Valdivia has been uploading a bunch of logos on Wikimedia claiming they're copyright free, which I don't think is the case; see examples [1], [2] and [3] (but there are more than 20, I believe) and he's been uploading them for a while without anyone checking on them, so I was hoping you could take a look and take the proper actions. >>>Image source problem with File:Michaeljacksonslash.jpg

Apparently the original reference image was deleted at some point. Observe the "here" that has been left as a red link. The picture of Jackson is a mugshot, and those are considered free and may accordingly be used freely on WP. I have found another copy of Jackson's mugshot and have linked the file there. Hopefully this will rescue this exceedingly important image from oblivion.

Thank you for pointing out the potential copyvio! Kelisi (talk) 01:10, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

@Kelisi: it looks good. If your derivative points to a deleted file, it should be fixed or it is a possible copyright violation (hence my tag). Magog the Ogre (tc) 22:42, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

Washington State Legislature portraits in the public domain?

Hi Magog, I saw you reviewed this image as being correctly listed as public domain. However, the linked site is the privacy policy specifically for the WA Secretary of State, and the statute linked doesn't (I don't think?) appear to explicitly place all Washington State Government works in the public domain. I've tried contacting the administrators of the WA Legislature site to inquire about the license of the member portrait photos, but they simply reiterated that the photos are "available for public use".

As a result, I'm curious how you came to determine that the member portraits are indeed in the public domain. If this portrait is in the public domain, then I would think all the other member portraits are also in the public domain and can be added to Wikipedia. Either way, I think we should be consistent and either remove all the member portraits from Wikipedia (if they're not actually public domain), or include all of them (if they are). Let me know how you came to the conclusion that they are so I can get to work uploading the other member portraits :). ThereWerentAnyUsernamesLeft (talk) 03:31, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

@ThereWerentAnyUsernamesLeft: Thank you for taking the time to investigate this. You bring up some good points.
With regards to why I linked the privacy policy: oddly enough, a lot of sites keep their copyright policy there, as does this one.
Regarding my rationale:
In my humble opinion (as an Commons administrator and former OTRS member), this is as airtight as {{PD-self}} or {{Attribution}}.
Now I will say, I notice that is on the secretary of state website, whereas the image above is on the legislature website. This happened long enough ago that I have no memory of the tagging, so I can't explain the disconnect. I probably had one of the following trains of thought:
  • There was a link from the legislature website to the SOS website which I can no longer find.
  • I didn't notice the subdomain is different.
  • I broadly interpreted the word "site" to mean everything under the domain rather than subdomain
  • Most states do not interpret public records mandates to mean a public domain copyright. But several do. If the secretary of state says that Washington does, he is the primary legal expert and I take his word for it.
However, I am an amateur, not a real lawyer. So you may want to get a second opinion and bring this issue up on Commons' copyright copyright board: c:COM:VPC. If you don't in the next few days, I will.
If the consensus is that my opinion is correct, we may be able to revive the copyright tag {{PD-WAGov}}. Magog the Ogre (tc) 22:27, 15 October 2020 (UTC)
I'm not a lawyer either, but I do think it would be apt to get some kind of written confirmation from the WA secretary of state that these photos are in the public domain, instead of attempting to deduce or infer it. A couple questions:
  • did you already create a thread at the Commons copyright board?
  • what did PD-WAGov actually state?
ThereWerentAnyUsernamesLeft (talk) 23:40, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
Will get this by tomorrow (also dummy comment to avoid archive bot). Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:06, 4 November 2020 (UTC)

Article advice requested

See the article for Somerset Trust Company, and it's more than the obvious problems. The article is almost entirely written by a bank employee (or, at least, someone using an IP address of the bank). However, they've not edited it in almost 3 years, and, except for minor edits, no one else has, either. I'm uncertain how much to change things, as a result. I assume that banking is more of a core-competency for you?        —  BoringJim (talk) 10:13, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

@BoringJim: I worked as a low level employee in a bank for a few years. That hardly makes me an expert. But I agree there is some problematic wording e.g., "Somerset Trust Company has striven to be a leader in technology in the community banking industry". I tagged it as WP:PEACOCK wording, but you could go in and clean it up. If you're especially lazy, you could bring the issue up at WP:NPOVN but it isn't guaranteed anyone else will do it. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:36, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
PS. I notice you have a signature in your template, which is forbidden by policy. Instead, you should substitute the template or copy the breaking spaces directly. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:38, 22 December 2020 (UTC)

Washington State Legislature Portraits guidance

Based on what was discussed here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump/Copyright/Archive/2020/11#Washington_state_copyright

@Missvain: do you have some advice as the person who closed the DR? Thanks. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:05, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
From my knowledge, Washington State government photographs are not public domain (unlike Florida and California and of course, federal). I reviewed that discussion and also did a bit of digging and I have not found a statement regarding PD for Washington State government works (and I'm very familiar, at this point, with Federal and California, and saw nothing like their statements). I lean to deleting the content. If someone wants to reach out to the public relations folks for the government of Washington and we get the appropriate OTRS, then we can always "undelete." Missvain (talk) 01:13, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
@Missvain: can you clarify why you closed the DR as keep? Magog the Ogre (tc) 03:34, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
I suggested contacting the State of Washington. It's not our job as deletion reviewers (both on Wikipedia or Commons) to sit and investigate each file's copyright - that is why it undergoes deletion review. Regardless, I should have tagged it with OTRS request. I'll do that now so the uploader can see if they can get permission. Missvain (talk) 16:17, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

Crappy request

Hi! I have a crappy request for you. Its okay to say no. But you are one of the admins I have known for many years.

Can you have a look at User_talk:C1K98V#January_2021 where there is an unblock request?

I know C1K98V from Commons. C1K98V made some bad uploads as a new user but after being told how copyright works there have been a big improvement and very few mistakes. C1K98V have helped me with license review of files. (He is a good at detecting files that are copied from Internet and have given me lists of files that should be okay to review and files that seems to be copyvios)

C1K98V is blocked on en.wiki and asked me if I had any advice. I'm no longer an admin on en.wiki and was not active in blocking and unblocking on en.wiki. But I checked and was a bit surprised that there was no warnings or no attempts to explain policy. At least not any I could see.

I checked a few of the articles he made and as far as I can see the text that has been copied are very short. Most of it "dull" text that I even doubt is above C:COM:TOO.

If you have time perhaps you could decline, accept or give an advice for him? --MGA73 (talk) 18:04, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Not sure how I missed this one. I'll take a look. Magog the Ogre (tc) 15:43, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! --MGA73 (talk) 12:41, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

What is the copyright status of this image? I think everything about it is really weird. It contains a broken fair use template that says the uploader made the image himself. An older version of the page says "Northern Territory Library image PH0242/0024" as the source. But "Northern Territory Library image PH0242/0024" is this image. Also, the image may have been accidentally moved to Commons and then deleted by you. So, what to do with the image? --TheImaCow (talk) 18:56, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Or is it possible that the image was really photographed by the uploader, and the fair use tag was placed by mistake? --TheImaCow (talk) 19:01, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

@TheImaCow: it should be fine. A lot of users get confused by fair use and add a rationale when none is required. The old version of the page was certainly a copypaste error. The image is of a resolution, metadata, etc. that is consistent with own work. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:19, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello Magog the Ogre, I hope you're doing well. Thanks you for looking at my unblock request. And I'm really greatful for your consideration and time, efforts. Thanks --C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 13:43, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

I'm checking the 4 article listed on Cci page. The 4th article Yeh Jawani doesn't have any copyvio, and the Simrat Kaur article which was tagged for csd was later declined by admin, and I expanded it, now after a month copyvio detector tool show 67% likely. So after researching more, I find out it reverse copyright from Wikipedia and random blog (winkreport). Author is Jonita and upload date is 29 January 2019. So I didn't do wrong in 3rd article. So how do I help, in cleanup, as I want to keep up to my promise. Please guide me. Thank you. --C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 13:55, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

@C1K98V: Sure, no problem. Anyway I'm not really familiar with the CCI page or with the tool in question. Can you clarify what you're trying to do? Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:14, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
Please have a look at the CCI page [4]. The article which were listed by Amanda was the Draft:Kaatelal & Sons for which I was blocked, I tagged it for speedy g13. Now the second article Hero – Gayab Mode On which was created by me. But I check with copyvio detector tool. And the results were around 78% violation likely. And the violation is in the plot, but the plot is totally changed. I just wrote a short plot. And the link which appears to be violated is some kind of blog dated 13 January 2021. So in these case I didn't do anything wrong. For the third article Yeh Jawani Ta Ra Ri Ri there is no copyvio. Last article, details I mentioned above. So I really want to help, but I couldn't figure out how. I want to keep up to my promise. Please help me. Thank you --C1K98V (💬 ✒️ 📂) 02:46, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Does the second section of c:Commons:Copyright_rules_by_subject_matter#Noticeboards_and_signs apply to this image? (is it ok for commons?) --TheImaCow (talk) 10:03, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

And is "taken from standard wikipedia maps" enough attribution for this file? --TheImaCow (talk) 20:10, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Regarding the first question, c:Commons:TOO United States applies. The image is fine.
Regarding the second question, probably not. I do recognize the template as a public domain map which I can't think of but if you search for a while under c:Category:Blank maps, you should find it. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:07, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Is this oversized chair (located in Cuba, Missouri) considered as an 3D-Artwork? --TheImaCow (talk) 19:58, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

Then it's probably better to delete the image, i just proposed it for deletion. --TheImaCow (talk) 15:27, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi! This file was moved to Commons. No author is mentioned. Could you check if user on Commons is the author or we should credit someone else? --MGA73 (talk) 19:10, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

@MGA73: author is never explicitly stated, as with all this user's early uploads (Special:Log/Mdf). However, I do note the consistent resolution (unusually high for the upload date), subjects, and photograph character tell me the author is the uploader. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:15, 21 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! Yes I agree it is very likely that User:Mdf is the photographer. But atm. it is User:Kristof vt that is uploader and with no other info everyone would expect that he is the photographer. Do you have a tool that can create an original upload log for deleted files? --MGA73 (talk) 07:37, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

And yes, you'd have to be an idiot to not understand that. Since you're obviously not an idiot, you're just being disruptive. You could ping me and say, BTW, you missed this one, rather than risking a perfectly legit file being deleted because I'm off WP for a month. Of course, hopefully someone reviewing it would not be an idiot and think it's stupid to tag a Commons map for potential copy-vio, but you never know -- it's happened before. — kwami (talk) 20:51, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
You're right. I'm not an idiot. I can view histories and see you're fill of shit. And pinging you is exactly what I did.
How's this instead? Stop uploading copyright violations or I'll block you. You've been warned enough. Magog the Ogre (tc) 23:18, 1 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi! This file is used on uk.wiki uk:Файл:Copper Canyon1.jpg. Is it possible to undelete and move to Commons? It was moved to Commons earlier but deleted because it had no source. I can't see if the problem is the original file or because someone made a bad transfer to Commons. --MGA73 (talk) 11:00, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

@MGA73: it never had a source. An IP came along months later and added a GFDL tag without a source. Someone even posted a request on the user's talk page which was removed without comment.[5] . Magog the Ogre (tc) 20:17, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much! --MGA73 (talk) 20:18, 6 March 2021 (UTC)

File:Qxz-ad111.gif

Hi. I tagged you some time ago over the inaccuracies in that file. Are you planning to correct it? Ghmyrtle (talk) 12:27, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi! I noticed that this file is on Commons as 300 × 225 but a copy on ms:Fail:CombineWheat0654.JPG is 450 × 338. Perhaps you could check if the highest res was moved from en.wiki to Commons? --MGA73 (talk) 19:00, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Nope, same resolution here. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:03, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Reuploaded files

Hi! I noticed Special:ListFiles/Sade hav many files that claims to be reuploaded. Is it possible just to restore the original files or is a reupload needed for some reason? --MGA73 (talk) 19:31, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

@MGA73: Looks like the originals were lost in the ~2006 data corruption. You can see the true upload in the history page. Magog the Ogre (tc) 02:00, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! --MGA73 (talk) 05:41, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry to keep bothering you but the file is in use in ms:Fail:Kamuthi mosque3.jpg so I would like to know if it had a good source, author and license so it could be moved to Commons. --MGA73 (talk) 17:11, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

Thank you! --MGA73 (talk) 05:47, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

GFDL

Hi! I have been cleaning up recent GFDL uploads and found some that could go to Commons. They are in Category:Wikipedia files reviewed on Wikimedia Commons. They were licensed wrong or are derivated from old GFDL-files on Commons. So they should be good. --MGA73 (talk) 19:37, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

@MGA73: at some point Commons stopped accepting new GFDL files. I don't think it applies to works uploaded to Wikipedia before a certain date, but it almost certainly does apply to recent uploads. Magog the Ogre (tc) 22:53, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes Commons changed policy and per c:Commons:Licensing#GNU_Free_Documentation_License it is the licensing date that is relevant. "The content was licensed on or after 15 October 2018. The licensing date is considered, not the creation or upload date.". So if I crop a photo from 2017 it is still accepted because the photo was licensed GFDL in 2017. --MGA73 (talk) 05:56, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
You may have noticed that I have proposed that enwiki also restrict uploads op new files licensed GFDL and some asked how many files are uploaded as GFDL so I was checking the latest files on this list of recent uploads not marked as own. I think that it shows that it is only own work that is still uploaded as GFDL (and wrongly licensed files). Some have been fixed and moved to Commons and some deleted (see Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2021 May 13 as an example). --MGA73 (talk) 07:32, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
@MGA73: Can you link me the discussion? I'd already been thinking of proposing the same. Magog the Ogre (tc) 20:15, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Restricting_GFDL-licensed_uploads. --MGA73 (talk) 21:17, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
I made a suggestion on Template talk:License migration is redundant earlier but gave up. You are welcome to try if you want. --MGA73 (talk) 11:05, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Can you undelete the mentioned file? From my understanding, while the code is MIT licensed, the screenshots from GitHub and from the final build are all copyrighted. Unless if someone compiled the program themselves and took their own screenshots (MIT licensed), this would count as a non-free file. Aasim (talk) 01:32, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

@Awesome Aasim: It doesn't matter who built; the license is what matter. It does matter who took the screenshot, but only if it shows creativity. In this case, the screenshot is nothing but the initial page, so anyone else who opened it for the first time would have seen the same. Thus there is no creativity. Magog the Ogre (tc) 14:13, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi! This file is used on rowiki: ro:Fișier:EnPassant.png / ro:En passant. But I can't move it to Commons because of the old revision is broken. Perhaps you can delete it and move the latest version? --MGA73 (talk) 15:28, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello again. File:Fudanmath.jpg is also on rowiki ro:Fișier:Fudanmath.jpg and in use. If it is okay could you move that to Commons? --MGA73 (talk) 17:34, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
@MGA73: you can use CommonsHelper for the former file. I've restored the latter. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:09, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

Les_Lye.jpg

Hi, I added the source information to this file (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Les_Lye.jpg), how do I ensure the delete tag gets removed from it now? This is a family-owned headshot of Les Lye that we've had ever since it was taken. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cornelius20 (talkcontribs) 18:20, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

@Cornelius20 and TheJhops: Hi. A few questions to clarify before I can answer: are you the photographer, the heir of the photographer, or did you get written permission from the photographer? Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:41, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
I'm the heir of Les Lye, who is the subject in this photo. I"m not sure how I can prove that on here or clarify it any further, but I'm perfectly confident that I have full permission to use this photo in Les Lye's article, since it is a family portrait that we have kept in our possesion since it was first taken. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cornelius20 (talkcontribs) 5:22, 2 June 2021 (UTC)
@Cornelius20: great, thanks... if you are the heir, you reasonably believe the copyright rests with you, and you consent to the license on the page, could you please edit the file page to state as much? You can change this text: {{cc-by-sa-4.0|details}} to {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}.
Sorry for the drudgery... most of the time when we get files like this, the uploader didn't have the proper permissions. Magog the Ogre (tc) 01:07, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
Ok I replaced that tag on the file page. Is that the only thing I need to change? Thank you for your help, I don't use Wikipedia much so this is all new to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cornelius20 (talkcontribs) 4:40, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
Should be good now. Magog the Ogre (tc) 22:17, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi! I noticed that this page mention GFDL a few placed. Should GFDL not be removed just like it was on MediaWiki:Licenses etc.? --MGA73 (talk) 15:55, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

File revisions is hidden.

Do we have an easy way of transferring files like File:ABP Nadu logo.jpeg to commons whose one or more file revision is hidden? Downloading the file here and reuploading in Commons will change the uploader name. commonshelper has not been working for a while. --Sreejith K (talk) 20:18, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

You can use CommonsHelper to get the text, and then toollabs:magog/oldver.php to copy the file. In this case, the high res version is hidden from history, so it's probably best to request undeletion first. Magog the Ogre (tc) 15:04, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
If it was one file, I could have gone this route. But there are too many in Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons. I feel that such images which cannot be moved should have another tracking category or template, and some admins can undelete/transfer en-masse. --Sreejith K (talk) 16:42, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
@Sreejithk2000: perhaps it is possible to make a list of all free files with hidden versions and ask for an undeletion? Then the admin that work on the list should be able to spot fast if it is a copyvio or a penis that should not be undeleted. --MGA73 (talk) 16:56, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
Good suggestion. I have created a new tracking category to collate such images. See Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons with hidden file revisions --Sreejith K (talk) 18:44, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
@Sreejithk2000: great but with 203 k files in Category:All free media I was thinking of something more automated :-) But perhaps we should find another place than this page so we do not spam Magog :-D Unless of course Magog can make such a list? --MGA73 (talk) 20:15, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

No more GFDL

Hi! I made {{No more GFDL}} because a proposal to restrict use of GFDL passed. I'm letting you know in case your bot does any work on English Wikipedia related to new uploads. I wonder if it would be neat to have the bot make a list of files licensed GFDL only after that date? I know recent changes on the databases made your bot life harder so if you do not want to spend time on this its quite okay. --MGA73 (talk) 16:07, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

@MGA73: well done! Thank you for the note. Magog the Ogre (tc) 20:35, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi! A copy of this file is in use in tr:Dosya:603px-TürkMitolojisi.jpg. If the file okay? No info about author at tr.wiki. --MGA73 (talk) 15:57, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

PD-Self and no Commons

Since you are one of the admins that cares about files and Commons I wonder if you have any input for Template_talk:PD-self#No_Commons. If my suggest was perfect it would probably have been implemented. So I guess we could use some input. :-) --MGA73 (talk) 13:58, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi! I want send it Wikimedia commons... Very thanks Hadysylmy (talk) 03:24, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

Magog you are wrong, this image is in the public domain because only as you have already seen is an image not at all complex, simple, without figures or elements that do not exceed the threshold of originality, they are only letters that say the same and at the end of them two trapezoids , the font you have is this, the reason for removing this image is absurd and illogical.--Aurelio de Sandoval (talk) 17:56, 26 August 2021 (UTC)*

@Magog the Ogre:I even discussed this issue with the user Cookie who is a wikimedia administrator and he told me that the image is in the public domain for this reason: "The slight differences of some of the letters would not justify a protection. It is a simple text that does not exceed the originality threshold ", so please, could you move this image to Wikimedia Commons please?--Aurelio de Sandoval (talk) 18:01, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

@Magog the Ogre:If I am wrong, please tell me which section of the image has something complex so that it cannot be in Wikimedia Commons.--Aurelio de Sandoval (talk) 18:04, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

I agree with that assessment. This image shouldn't have been deleted in the first place. Magog the Ogre (tc) 00:18, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

@Aurelio de Sandoval: Ya hecho Magog the Ogre (tc) 19:35, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

Magog, I've recently saw your deletion page, & I honestly don't know if it was a mistake or not. Norozco1 (talk) 13:58, 27 August 2021 (UTC)

@Norozco1: it's not deleted, it's migrated to Commons. Magog the Ogre (tc) 19:34, 27 August 2021 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: Oh, okay, I'm just making sure, that's all. Thanks for the clarification, I truly appreciate it. Norozco1 (talk) 18:12, 28 August 2021 (UTC)

Question

Hello!

Did you intend to keep File talk:Jitex BK logo.png eventhough the file has been deleted on enwiki?Jonteemil (talk) 04:04, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

@Jonteemil: yes. You will note that WP:G8 specifically excludes talk pages for images on Commons.
However, I have proposed a new deletion criterion which may address this issue: WT:CSD#File talk pages which consist only of boilerplates, wikiproject tags, and/or text which has been copied to Commons (permalink). Magog the Ogre (tc) 15:32, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
