Gerda Arendt, thanks for the reminder! :) GeraldWL 13:26, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

To Fly!

Thanks for the extensive copyedit, Baffle gab1978, I definitely overlooked a lot of parts, and especially mega thanks for breaking the long paragraph in Release. I further did some ce-s, but overall thanks! GeraldWL 07:50, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

No worries, long paragraphs can be difficult to read, though many look much larger in the edit window because of the references. It's an interesting subject and I must admit I didn't realize the film's impact when I started the c/e. Good luck with your planned GA nomination, I think it should pass easily. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:00, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
Baffle gab1978, I agree, I went through a week of confusion on how to break the long paragraphs, like I knew there's a way but it doesn't seem to travel through my head. That's when I decided to put this on GOCE, so thanks very much. And yes, the film is literally the reason why IMAX is the way it is, and yet it's relatively overlooked. Thanks for the luck, happy editing :) GeraldWL 20:07, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
(edit conflict) There's usually a natural point in a text, such as a change of subject or nuance, where a paragraph can be broken up. Sometimes I just break them anywhere so I can read the text properly! It can help to break them for editing, use preview, then re-merge if needed before saving the edit. Every copy-edit is different! I think I've seen To Fly!, its description seems familiar to me but it's been decades since I visited an IMAX. Perhaps one day I'll visit one and To Fly! will still be showing! :D Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:53, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Baffle gab1978, actually, To Fly! is still showing: Airbus IMAX Theater in Chantilly, Virginia. 11am and 2pm showings :) GeraldWL 05:28, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

EATEOT

Hi Gerald. I've recently gone back to editing Wikipedia after some months of hiatus. Following some edits to EATEOT, I put it on WP:FAC, and I wondered if you could read through some of it and perhaps leave some comments. no pressure :) Wetrorave (talk) 02:50, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Wetrorave, nice to see it getting into FAC, I actually dreamt of this album last night cos of Otamatone and all lmao.. I'll be posting my comments soon, will also do a source and image review after that if nobody steps up. It should be not much, since I've talked about most of my concerns in the PR. I'm firm that this will pass, Caretaker would be amazed at how much his art has caused. GeraldWL 05:54, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
I had no idea what an Otamatone was before reading this and it's honestly been the best thing I've discovered on the internet since EATEOT itself (though for the opposite reasons and emotions). Love that A1 cover. Wetrorave (talk) 19:34, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
Wetrorave, lmaoo everyone's been asking Sully to make a cover of it ever since he included an excerpt in his "songs getting uncanny" video, or whatever the title was. It's a pretty good and appropriate escapism from all the melancholic mindfuck of the real album. GeraldWL 01:05, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Mentorship Program

Hello, Gerald! We're currently experimenting with Growth Team Features on the English Wikipedia with a test group of about 25%. You may have seen this info on the Teahouse, but basically, one of these new features is a mentorship program, where new users can directly message an experienced editor for guidance on how to use Wikipedia. Currently, 2% of users have this tool available to them, but we're bumping the percentage up to (most likely) 80% in the near future. Since only 50 users signed up to be mentors, I'm searching for some more to join to lessen the workload for each mentor. The questions you'd receive aren't any different than the ones from the Teahouse, and most if not all are simple to answer (see my talk page for examples). If you're interested, you can sign up here. Panini!🥪 13:42, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Panini!, oh wow, I didnt know about this and I've always wanted to help (despite me myself needing a little help at times), so thanks for telling me this! I've added myself there. GeraldWL 14:46, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Discussion at Talk:Sarah Azhari

I invite you to please join the discussion at Talk:Sarah Azhari.

Hello, we are seeking help with the Sarah Azhari article, created in 2013 & recently the subject of a deletion proposal. At issue was whether or not the Indonesian language sources establish notability. I am inviting you to the discussion at Talk:Sarah Azhari#Help with Indonesian language sources because you are in the Category:User id-N & have a minimum of 1,000 edits across all Wikimedia projects.

I realize that some of you are very busy while others may no longer be editing. Nevertheless, I thought it wise to consult with you.

Thank your for the work that you do on Wiki[mp]edia! Peaceray (talk) 21:06, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Promotion of Ben&Ben discography

Congratulations, Gerald Waldo Luis! The list you nominated, Ben&Ben discography, has been promoted to featured status, recognizing it as one of the best lists on Wikipedia. The nomination discussion has been archived.
This is a rare accomplishment and you should be proud. If you would like, you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured list. Keep up the great work! Cheers, PresN (talk) via FACBot (talk) 00:26, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Cheers, Primefac, via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Question from Janepalmer73! on Wikipedia:Why create an account? (19:39, 21 February 2022)

I am trying to edit a page. I thought I had to click on "Edit Source", I don't have the edit source option. How can I find that? --Janepalmer73! (talk) 19:39, 21 February 2022 (UTC)

Janepalmer73!, hi! If you're on desktop, you can see the Edit source button above the page title; you must be able to see "Read", "Edit" "Edit source", "New section", and "View history". In mobile, there's an "Edit" button below the title. Mind looking again and see if you can see the edit button? I've never heard cases of unable to see Edit button so this is interesting. Your Disrupt edit

TzarN64, hey there. I am not trying to disrupt your edit, but merely reshaping it so that it meets Wikipedia guidelines, and trying to improve it. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear it. GeraldWL 19:10, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
i fixed the article, so dont worry it is good now TzarN64 (talk) 19:19, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
TzarN64, hey, you essentially undid my edits without clear reasoning. The publisher part isn't really important and some of the infos are promotional. I'd love to hear your reasoning and how you think the article can be improved. It's a collaboration. GeraldWL 19:25, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Stop.

Stop removing the "Infomation" part about the services. It would look like a mess — Preceding unsigned comment added by TzarN64 (talkcontribs) 19:35, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Not really, it would only take a couple of table settings and it would look better. I can do it for you next morning (its night where I am), patience is a virtue :) GeraldWL 19:38, 23 February 2022 (UTC)

Final warning

Stop icon You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you disrupt Wikipedia. These edits are disruptive and not needed; the material if not of encyclopedic interest.

TzarN64, I don't think I'm disrupting Wikipedia. Can you please discuss, because there's no way we can collaborate if you don't want to talk. GeraldWL 01:13, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
Hey there, i cleaned up the page and it looks amazing now. TzarN64 (talk) 01:28, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
TzarN64, doesn't really for me though. There's two rows for Nintendo Channel when you only need one. The Kirby and Wii no Ma informations are promotional (not encyclopedic), and the Nintendo Channel ones are taken from the Channel article which is not allowed. As I said, I think it would be great if we discuss what changes should be made for the article, and I want to hear why you undid my edits too. GeraldWL 01:37, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Features for new users coming soon (and mentors, like you, wanted!)

Hello. As you're currently listed as a host at the Teahouse, I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.

  • Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
  • There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
  • Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.

To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse, whilst I've had just one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.

If becoming a mentor and being available to help new users on their first few days here interests you - just as have done at the Teahouse in the past - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. But please only do so if you are genuinely willing to be available to help. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences.

Thank you! Nick Moyes (talk) 11:51, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Nick Moyes, thanks for this! I have listed myself as mentor prior and am aware of the GTF, though I didn't read about it n full due to a human condition called laziness. I like the suggested edits part (which has been implemented prior on App). It's amazing that Wikipedia is further enhancing accessibility among newcomers, which it should be. WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  • Christmas Island AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  • Philadelphia GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  • United Nations Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  • SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  • United Nations Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Qscientia, hi! To add a keep comment, you must type an asterisk, space, then state whether you want to keep or delete in bold, then put your signature. So for a keep vote, it's something like:
* '''Keep'''. ~~~~
Usually it's also recommended to state why you want to keep/delete, so it will be like:
* '''Keep'''. I believe this article is notable. ~~~~

Hidden template use at FAC

Hi -- I'm going through this month's FACs capturing the reviewing statistics, and I noticed in this edit you used the {{hidden}} template. This is one of the templates that causes a problem at FAC because it includes all the text in a single template. {{collapse}} has the same problem, so the FAC instructions specifically suggest using {{cot}} and {{cob}} instead, since those don't enclose the text that's collapsed. See this FAC talk archive for more discussion of this than you could possibly want to read. If you want to keep on collapsing sections (which is not required, and in fact I know some editors don't like it unless it's a really long section) would you switch to {{cot}} and {{cob}}? Thanks. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 22:13, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Mike Christie, thanks for telling me about this! I seriously had no idea this is a case; I just remembered seeing someone using the same thing and I had always wanted to collapse my resolved comments. Thanks-- I'll be sure to implement this in the future! GeraldWL 01:49, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
