Why would you move non-admin comments?

Ok, nothing in the "Thread at WP:AN" section states it is only for admins, yet you moved the posts of two editors without their consent to an area far separated from the discussion stating it was because they were "non-admin comments". That is flat out inappropriate. Admins are not supposed to be "super editors", just regular editors with more work to do. If you want the RfM to be closed fine, so do I, but burying other editor's comments is not the way to do it. Remember I did not even vote in this RfM and I am patiently waiting for my proposal to get it's chance on the RfM chopping block. But I still think due-process is important and if it takes more time I'm fine with that, and as a steward of the debate so should you be. Colincbn (talk) 02:48, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

If anything just have someone from ArbCom close it. It was their remedy that the naming debate should be brought to a close quickly, and if this RfM not ending is hindering that it falls under their jurisdiction right? Colincbn (talk) 03:01, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Hi Colincbn. I moved the comments so that we could have a clear section that showed all the admin comments. You are correct that the section was not specifically marked as "admin only", but as I'm sure you realize, one of the recurring complaints about this dispute is that it frequently turns into "walls of text", so I have opted to keep that section focused on admin commentary. If it causes confusion, I could probably label the section as "administrator discussion" or something, but it is my hope that we can get the RM closed soon, and then it'll all be moot anyway. --Elonka 03:18, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
for crying out loud, Elonka, he's completely in the right here and you surely know it. Don't go moving non-admin's or IP's edits unless they're commenting somewhere they're specifically not supposed to edit, such as a /Proposed decision page on an ArbCom case. This kind of high-handed behavior is not helpful; surely you have learned this by now??? KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 03:20, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Since the RfM has come off the notice board and very few admins seem willing to get wrapped up in this can we eventually bring it to ArbCom to be closed as an amendment or something? If so how much time would need to pass before it becomes an option? I have been tempted to vote one way or the other just to bring it to a close but since I do not specifically oppose nor support the RfM it would be disingenuous. I sincerely want my proposal to be considered by the group (it has been largely ignored so far), but I don't want to oppose what is essentially an acceptable option just so it will be. Colincbn (talk) 04:21, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Brothers->Boys

Why the edit? They are brothers — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.98.168.219 (talk) 12:44, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Please provide a diff of the edit you're talking about. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 12:56, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
The article is Edward E. Kramer. It currently (incorrectly) states that he was charged with molesting three teenage brothers, but to my knowledge, there are no sources which state that. A correct statement would be, "two teenage brothers, and a third boy came forward later". I changed "brothers" to "boys",[1] but the anon has reverted me.[2] As I have a potential WP:COI here (I have met Kramer, have business ties to a business he was involved with about ten years ago, and other reasons), I have no interest in getting into a revert war on the article, so if you (KC) would like to fix it as it's a BLP, be my guest. --Elonka 00:16, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Nods, the boys aren't even mentioned in the source linked, but that source links to an earlier article, which as you recalled, speaks of two brothers + another boy. Seems a silly thing to edit war over anyway; all non-adult brothers can be accurately described as boys but not all boys can be accurately described as brothers. I have waded through the sources, and reverted the edit back to boys. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 14:26, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. With another upcoming trial, the article is probably going to get more attention (good and bad), so it'll be good to have an admin there who is somewhat familiar with the sources and can help maintain order on the BLP. I would've done it, but like I said, there are several reasons why I shouldn't. --Elonka 20:28, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
I went in and took some time with the article. If there's one thing I know, it's citation templates :) —Disavian (talk/contribs) 23:38, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

?oygul edits Richard Reames Bio !

Recent edits by ?oygul [3] [4] to the bio of a living person need to be scrutinized carefully, spillover from the heated naming debate I think. Slowart (talk) 04:00, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

The fact that he is allowed to edit at all is a travesty to the point that I'm thinking about leaving WP entirely. Every time I have to reply to one of his posts it makes me feel all the time I have spent here is just a total waste. Colincbn (talk) 05:29, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
I agree. Martin Hogbin (talk) 08:39, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
Multiple checkuser requests have been filed, and multiple administrators have reviewed the edits of ?oygul (talk · contribs). At this time, ?oygul is allowed to edit and participate, just as any other editor. --Elonka 02:06, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps I had better check but I hope you will not consider it in any way a violation of the Arbcom restrictions if I were to revert the offending, and obviously biased, edits referred to. Martin Hogbin (talk) 18:48, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
The best way to proceed is to ensure that any new information added, is accompanied with a reliable source which verifies that information. Also, if any changes are made to the text, they too should be accompanied with a verifiable source. The text in the article, should reflect the information in the sources. --Elonka 13:09, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

HeroEngine

An anon user seems to be making a ruckus at the HeroEngine page. He has accused you and two others of COI. He does have some semi-valid points so it would be a good idea for you to take a look and try and rectify the situation. I have drawn some of my own conclusions and have replied to him, but as one of the others accused has been inactive for two years, and the other only edited on one day, I feel that you should be informed of this. Sanctions ? arborsculpture

edit by blackash [diff] Slowart (talk) 16:42, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Blackash (and you) are not prohibited from editing the article. The specific wording of the sanction is, "... topic banned from all discussion on the correct name for the tree shaping/arborsculpture/pooktre topic for one year. The topic ban includes talk pages, wikipedia space and userspace, but only covers discussion of what name should be given to the practice, and what title should be used for any articles on the subject." So both of you are still welcome to edit the article. As long as you are making good faith changes, and being careful to use good sources, feel free to edit away! --Elonka 16:55, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

We can edit war, but not talk about it ? Silly. Slowart (talk) 01:05, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Recent addition from "The Southern Free Times" is blackash's local free newspaper. Quoting blackash. This is simply a way to game the system. The cite and text was removed by a neutral editor in the first place. Slowart (talk) 01:49, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Advice

Hi Elonka, I hope you can give me some advice, or redirect me. I got your name from Wikipedia:Requests_for_arbitration/The_Troubles#Final_remedies_for_AE_case. There's a dispute about content related to the Troubles at Talk:Kingsmill_massacre#Names_of_victims. I raised an RfC, but despite that there's no consensus. What's the best thing to do next? I've asked there for opinions on mediation or arbitration, but not had much response. I think views are entrenched and it might be best if it's possible to get an ruling one way or the other, as long discussion has not really moved the debate on much at all. Regards --Flexdream (talk) 17:33, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey Elonka. Ok I will log in when I edit wikipedia next time. Review request

Elonka, I have a request to ask of you if I may. I have been working on the article on Tabitha and Napoleon D'umo for some time now and I posted a peer review request at WikiProject Biography to get feedback but my request has sat there untouched. I don't remember how I arrived on your user page but I saw that you created several articles on dancers/performers. Since you are very involved in editing Wikipedia and since you already have an interest in entertainment I figured this article may be of interest to you.

If I would have know WikiProject Biography was dead, I would not have gone there seeking a review but my request is there now and I still need a one. Would you please review the article? My primary concern is the tone. Be advised this article is a long read. Not including anything below the "See also" section it is four pages printed. Let me know if you're up to it. If you're interested in dance related topics then I don't think you'll find the length annoying but I am not expecting you to automatically say yes. So if you choose to decline, please let me know so that I can go find someone else. //Gbern3 (talk) 09:57, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Gbern3, I'm interested, but don't have time to do a peer review, sorry. I did add the article to my watchlist, and will see if I can pop in to help. One possibility is to go ahead and nominate it for FA, which will definitely get some eyes on it. Another is to nominate it for GA, which can take some time (a couple months) but will definitely get you a reviewer at some point. --Elonka 16:11, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
Elonka, thank you for your prompt reply. I have updated this article quite a bit since the last time I received a peer review so I would prefer to get another one before making a leap to FA. I don't think I want to take this article to FA because I'm not sure if it has a good chance of passing. I would like to think it would but as I said before I need help with the tone. I think the tone is fine but I have been accused of lacking NPOV in the past so if this article is in fact bias that would certainty come up in FA and would probably be grounds for failure. I don't want to waste anyone's time over there. I have found another editor to ask for a review so I will take this route instead. The advice is appreciated though. //Gbern3 (talk) 07:52, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

Hello. You recently created Writer-in-Residence as a redirect to Poet Laureate. I didn't understand that, since the phrase "Writer-in-Residence" doesn't appear on that page, and Writer in residence redirects to Artist-in-residence. The latter appears much more plausible as a target -- I've never heard of Writer-in-Residence being used for Poet Laureate. Cusop Dingle (talk) 20:35, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

See List of U.S. states' Poets Laureate. The term "Writer in Residence" is used in Idaho, though I agree it's not a commonly used term. We could possibly redirect the hyphenated version to Artist-in-residence, and then add a {{redirect}} disambig tag there? --Elonka 05:48, 8 November 2011 (UTC)
Ah I see. How about a sort of disambiguation like this?
Writer-in-Residence may refer to:
Cusop Dingle (talk) 17:48, 9 November 2011 (UTC)
Sure, I would not be opposed to that, though usually there need to be at least three entries to really justify a disambiguation page. Better might be:
I have no strong preference either way, so if you'd like to go the disambig route, that's fine too. If you want, go ahead and create it, and then I may modify formatting a bit via WP:MOSDAB (like the links need to be at the left, and text at the right, other minor tweaks).
--Elonka 17:54, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Writer-in-Residence redirect

Hi - I noticed that Writer-in-Residence is a redirect to Poet Laureate, while Writer in residence is a redirect to Artist-in-residence. I think the latter is better; any objection if I change the W-i-R redirect also to A-i-r? --GRuban (talk) 19:05, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Aha. Cusop Dingle directed me here. Seems we have agreement. I chose the second option, the redirect plus hatnote. Thank you lady plus gentleman. May all your troubles be abridged, and may your happinesses be encyclopedic. --GRuban (talk) 20:04, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Hey Elonka. I hope this is the right way to leave a message back to you! I looked at the video game developer page. There are potential sources that could be added to the quality of life section ( http://www.salon.com/2004/12/02/no_fun_and_games/ , http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2006/04/26/electronic-arts-settles-overtime-suits/ , http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/21/business/yourmoney/21digi.html ?) -- the current wording makes it sound like EA independently decided to start paying overtime, when it happened in conjunction with the settlement of the lawsuit. Shortly after EA changed its practices, Activision was hit with a similar suit ( http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/may2006/id20060504_225557.htm ), and Sony settled an overtime suit in 2007 ( http://www.next-gen.biz/news/sony-settles-overtime-lawsuit-85m ). From these you can see a throughline to where, having been hit by this, the big companies appealed to CA to get the standards changed so that their hours would be within the law -- to me it's a notable part of the ongoing issue that they actually changed laws rather than changing policies. My understanding is that EA also negotiated with BC government prior to the opening of the Vancouver studio and received exemptions to labor (labour up there) laws prior to breaking ground. If that seems relevant to the section I can dig up a source. A fantastic recent source on the research behind the phenomenon of crunch and overtime is Margaret Heffernan's *Willful Blindness* ( http://www.mheffernan.com/book-wb-summary.shtml ). Hello

Elonka, I am a new wikipedia editor. Can you please explain what request for arbitration on the Muhammad talk/discussion page means? Thanks. Xareen (talk) 19:57, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Xareen. Arbitration cases are usually pretty complex, but in a nutshell, it means that there has been a longrunning dispute between some editors on how to deal with some section of the article. The editors tried working through the various steps of Wikipedia dispute resolution, but couldn't come to an agreement, so a formal arbitration case was opened. This means that members of the community-elected arbitration committee are reviewing the situation, including everyone's history and the evidence they are submitting, to determine what to do about the dispute. They won't rule on article content, but they are carefully examining the conduct of all editors, to decide if anyone has been behaving inappropriately. The case will probably wrap up in a couple weeks, and the arbs will probably ban certain editors from participating in the discussion (saying that they are "blocking consensus" or being disruptive in other ways), and then encourage the remaining editors, and other editors who haven't been involved in the dispute, to try and craft a consensus solution to get the dispute resolved. In terms of how it affects you: If you've been following the dispute at all, you're welcome to participate in the arbitration proceedings by offering your opinion on matters. Of if you haven't been following it, I wouldn't worry about it, it'll work itself out. Hope that helps? --Elonka 20:08, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Cristiano Tomás (talk) 06:39, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello Lumastan, thank you for your courtesy. Just calling me Elonka is fine.  :) How would you prefer to be addressed? For the arbitration case, we (the larger community of Wikipedians) have been discussing civility rather intensively for the last few weeks. As luck would have it, just today we started a process to gather examples of incivility around the project, so that our elected arbitrators may review the evidence and then judge what to do about the problem. The entire "Civility enforcement" arbitration case is rather large and complex, but if you have examples of incivility which you have observed, you are welcome to add them to the list of evidence, here. Examples should be limited only to comments made in the main projectspace (article talkpages and Wikipedia pages, etc.). Comments made on user talkpages do not count at this time, nor do comments made prior to 2011. If you would like to help add evidence from your own observations, please do. And if you have free time, you are welcome to read the full case, evidence, and workshop pages, though I'll caution you, it's quite a bit of reading! Since you have strong feelings about civility though, I think you're exactly the kind of person who should be participating in the discussion. Especially as you are a relatively new editor, your viewpoint, as you are seeing things with fresh eyes, would be much appreciated. Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions, --Elonka 06:55, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Elonka,
I would be grateful to participate in your case. I prefer, if you do not mind, to be adressed as Cristiano Tomás. I will add the comments I took as insulting and of ill-behavior and place them on here. If you would have me do anything else, let me know. Thank you, Cristiano Tomás (talk) 07:04, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
Hello Cristiano Tomás, nice to meet you! Would you like to change your accountname from "Lumastan" to "CristianoTomas"? It's a bit confusing sometimes when someone has one name for their account and a different name that they would like to be referred to. If you would like to have your accountname changed, see WP:RENAME, and then things might be easier when communicating with other editors. Or if you want to keep things as they are, that is okay too, it is your choice. Best, --Elonka 07:09, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Clement IV Papal Bull, Queen of Cyprus

I did some searching, and found Les registres de Clément IV (1265-1268): Recueil des bulles de ce pape.[5] If you search for Chypre is lists regina, with two numbers 865, 866(on page 93). If you search for 865 you get Audi filia et(listed on page 25) and Castitatia observantia(page 47). I hope this helps. --Kansas Bear (talk) 07:42, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

I believe Clement IV might have sent her two "letters". The first being called "Audi filia et"(listed under 865) the second, "De sinu patris"(list under 866). --Kansas Bear (talk) 07:53, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Looks like those are the correct letters. Google only seems to have the index, which is all my university library here has as well. If you have access to Hans Mayer's article "Ibelin versus Ibelin" (which is on JSTOR), he talks about the letters on p. 51-52, and note 142 on p. 52, noting where else they have been printed. Adam Bishop (talk) 09:00, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and also, I don't know if this will make things easier or more difficult, but "audi filia et" begins with a quotation from Psalm 45:10 (or Psalm 44:11 depending on the version). Adam Bishop (talk) 09:36, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks very much! I'd love to see the full text if possible, as I'd like to quote from it in the Isabella article. Sadly I don't have JSTOR access, but could you forward it to me by any chance? elonka@aol.com. --Elonka 17:47, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
I don't have the full text, I just know that's a Bible quote :) I'll send you Mayer's article though. Adam Bishop (talk) 20:07, 16 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I have started a new Wikipedia article, Audi filia et, where I am compiling information from various sources. Feel free to jump in and correct or expand.  :) --Elonka 03:59, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
Great! If we can find the text I will certainly help add it to Wikisource and translate it and all that. I just noticed we have an article on ecclesiastical letter, which is what this is, not a bull. And now I am wondering how many articles link to bulls that are actually letters... Adam Bishop (talk) 11:11, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Ah, good point! I wonder if it would be worth making a [[List of ecclesiastical letters]], or whether it might get too bulky... Or maybe articles on the more notable letters should be added to each Pope's page, and then we could split them off, like to "List of ecclesiastical letters during the pontificate of Urban IV" or something like that? --Elonka 17:04, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Libellus responsionum - for your list. Ealdgyth - Talk 17:08, 19 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Ealdgyth. Another possibility is that we work with categories... I've found Category:Documents of the Catholic Church by pope, which could probably be expanded quite a bit. --Elonka 17:26, 19 January 2012 (UTC)

A late reply

Hello Elonka. I am sorry I did not reply to your question on the now closed talk page. I apologize that some of my words at the start of the thread were given out of context. It wasn't my intention to discredit the many things you have commented on which primarily agree with my own interpretations. This is the comment I was referring to and the larger point I had wished to make was that if you did believe MF should be restricted to ArbCom posts alone, it would be better as a separate proposal. I was disenchanted at how quickly my intentions were twisted towards an invitation to attack your character and do not align with those sentiments. Sincerely - My76Strat (talk) 10:41, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

DYK nomination

Hi Elonka, I recently reviewed your DYK nomination for Douglass High School (it was fine), but I noticed the template wasn't listed on Template talk:Did you know, which is step 3 in the nominating process. I listed the nomination on the page in the right place, and hopefully the DYK hook promoters don't mind. poroubalous (talk) 17:48, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Strange, I wonder where it went to? Okay, thanks for getting it fixed up! --Elonka 17:51, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
No problem. poroubalous (talk) 17:55, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

DYK for Douglass High School (Missouri)

Best Wishes from me and the wiki. Thanks Victuallers (talk) 16:02, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Maybe you'd like to consider organizing a St. Louis meetup in March for Wikipedia:WikiWomen's History Month :)--Pharos (talk) 18:58, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey. The version prior to this edit contained multiple references that were given the same name; specifically: "jackson-168" and "demurger-100". This resulted in the second definition of each reference being masked by the first and the generated footnote being associated with the first definition. I've untangled them; the first by simply using the second definition which contained a google link that seems to apply to all, the second by splitting them to expose a quote that probably only goes with that instance.

I do a fair amount of reference-fixing. For FAs, I usually do it after the moribund FA process passes them, but I'll do more for it now if you're interested. I've not actually read this article yet, but see some other things that are easily moved along. Alarbus (talk) 06:13, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Sure, feel free to do anything you like. :) I'm pretty exhausted by the whole FA process at this point. When I nominated the article back in early January, I had time to work on it for what I expected would be a weekend, week, or maybe 2 weeks of work, but this FA review seems to be neverending at this point. We're now well into February and I just don't have time for daily work on Wikipedia like this. I wish the nom process would move along so I didn't have to keep checking back every day. --Elonka 06:19, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
I only glossed the FA review. I'll have a bit of a peek. This is the direction I'd be thinking of taking this, but probably not in one step. I stashed a bot edit in the history. Some of that should be used, but the current structure of the referencing resulted in further duplication of citation details (the ISBNs in this case). I have noticed that those who criticise the FA process have more difficulty getting articles through their gauntlet. They must have a decree that allows for this. Alarbus (talk) 06:41, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
Ah, it's probably not worth overhauling the entire citation system, as that would just risk more opportunity for complaints. At least with the citations as they are, things are consistent and stable, if not bot-friendly. --Elonka 07:07, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
That's why it's best to raise the standards after their low standards (and ring-kissing) are behind. I'll putter at a modest pace. Alarbus (talk) 07:28, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Elonka,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 18:19, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Sure, happy to help! I'm sending an email now. --Elonka 18:45, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Audi filia et - numbe

I was working on Audi filia et, and corrected a few likely typos in the Wikisource page, but one thing I couldn't figure out was "numbe potius quam uraris". Are you sure it really says "numbe"? I assume it should be a verb of some sort but it looks like there are some letters missing. Otherwise it looks fine! I've almost finished translating it. Adam Bishop (talk) 12:19, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Just passing through: nubere? "Better to marry than burn", I Corinthians 7:9. Cusop Dingle (talk) 12:38, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Yup, I just realized what it should be (and of course, this is one of the phrases translated in the Mayer article, so I should have realized earlier!). Adam Bishop (talk) 18:27, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Sorry about that. I checked the transcript, and the word there is "nube", not "numbe". I'm actually kind of surprised how few typos I made, considering I don't know Latin, heh! Google Translate puts it as "cloud", but I agree that "marry" is probably the correct translation, as in "better to marry rather than burn". The whole scenario here reminds me of an episode of The Tudors or something.  ;) --Elonka 19:29, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, Google Translate is pretty bad with big chunks of modern languages, and it's not very useful at all for Latin. "Nube" does mean both "cloud" and "marry", but I guess Google would never be able to tell which is which. Anyway, I put up a new translation, and I tried referencing the Bible quotes if I recognized them, but I'm sure there are all sorts of other allusions in there too. If you have it handy, could you add the bibliographical info for the edition of the text to the Latin version? (Jordan or Tautu or wherever you found it!) Adam Bishop (talk) 21:00, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
English translation looks fantastic, thanks! And yes, the source info (Tautu) is already on the relevant talkpages. Also De sinu patris is ready to go: wikisource:la:De sinu patris. Thanks again for the help, --Elonka 05:51, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Oh I see it now, that's great. I'll get started on De sinu patris. Adam Bishop (talk) 09:47, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

If I may bother you again, I have a question about De sinu patris, where it says "Apostolicis itaque monitis aures intentas, quaesumus, adhibe, ac filialis accommoda promptitudinis intellectum, ut es sparsa fructificent nec videantur dura vel amara quae scribimus, sed ipsa induratum animum, considerator scribentis affectu, molliant et in salutiferae monitionis consideratione dulcescant." I wondering about "ut es sparsa" and "considerator" specifically - does it say "consideratur" or is "-tor" correct? I haven't discovered what to do with the "es" yes, but if that is also correct, I guess it could be "es considerator" and the syntax is just really strange. (Actually, "consideratur" doesn't make much sense either...as is often the case, I'm sure the addition of modern punctuation may have made it worse). Adam Bishop (talk) 20:36, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

You're right. I doublechecked, and the following corrections are needed:
  • "ut es sparsa" --> "ut ea sparsa"
  • "considerator" --> "considerato"
Everything else in that sentence looks accurate. --Elonka 21:21, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Oh, well, that makes perfect sense now, haha. Thanks! Adam Bishop (talk) 21:24, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
In reviewing the Audi filia et translation, could I propose an alternate for " An non dolore plenum occurrit reginae nomen excelsum in tantam ignominiam devenire, linguis obloquentium, immo, proh dolor, vera, ut fertur, et manifesta loquentium lacerari. ? Instead of, "Does it not occur to the queen that the exalted name, full of sadness, comes into such great dishonour, and that it is tormented by the tongues of those who slander, or indeed, how sad to say, speak about true and evident things, as it is said?", could it instead start, "Does it not occur to the queen that her exalted name, painfully, comes into such great dishonour..." --Elonka 21:41, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, that's probably it. I was thinking "exalted name" referred to God but you're right, it's the queen's name. Adam Bishop (talk) 21:50, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Can I offer a suggestion? If you translate dolore plenum as a nominative, the phrase "An non dolore plenum occurrit reginae nomen excelsum in tantam ignominiam devenire?" can be rendered as: "Or does it not seem a sorrowful thing that the queen's exalted name comes into such great dishonour?", thus explaining what the writer means when he says "forsitan dolore moveberis", "perhaps you will be moved by sorrow", in the preceding sentence. Iblardi (talk) 20:53, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Another question! Is "non abhorrens adulterii facinus divina et humana lege prohibitum, Deo abominabile, hominibus, quorum separat caritatem, horrendum" correct? Specifically "quorum separat caritatem". It's perfectly translatable as it is, I just don't understand it, so I'm not sure if it's a mistake or if the fault is with me... Adam Bishop (talk) 10:41, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
The transcription is correct, though I guess it's possible that the book itself might have had a typo. I'm not sure how to translate "quorum separate caritatem" either, but agree that "which separates the charity" wouldn't seem to make sense in that context. I could reach out to some other Latin experts at St. Louis University if you'd like? --Elonka 16:10, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
I think I got it, it just means something like adultery separates men from God's charity, I guess... Adam Bishop (talk)

Cheeky off-topic request

Hi Elonka. Came across you no matter what and liked your page and I do know Knights Templar, excellent article.

Erm ... you say you are an appreciator of diverse sub-cultures. I don't suppose you've ever had a look at Tim Dedopulos' enterprising "The Great Global Treasure Hunt on Google Earth" currently running (ends March 31 and there's a 50,000 euro prize)? There's an issue with a decorative pattern involving 4 Google Earth logos decorating the borders of each double page. Some sort of code it would seem but it's driving us all nuts. Any hints much appreciated!

Worth a look (Puzzle 8 is perhaps the most satisfying). 81.178.38.169 (talk) 03:32, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like fun! If I have free time, I may take a look. --Elonka 05:51, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Muhammad images mediation

Dear Elonka, please note Wikipedia:Mediation_Cabal/Cases/11_February_2012/Muhammad-images. I must say I am a bit disappointed that it's basically the same group of editors as before, minus one or two; after the arbitration, I had expected that there was going to be some leadership. --JN466 13:53, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Huh? MedCab? Why? I thought that ArbCom ordered an RfC, so I was waiting for that to start. --Elonka 15:08, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
As far as I understand, the MedCab is to help participants draft the RfC. There was no mention of MedCab during arbitration, and this mediation request was initiated by Eraserhead rather than arbcom, but I guess it's not necessarily a bad idea. No one else seems to have done anything to formulate an RfC ... --JN466 04:40, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for creating this welcome addition to our collection of articles about academic journals. One question: on the journal's website, I see just one volume per year, apparently published as a single paperback. What makes you say that it is semi-annual (2/year) rather than annual (1/year)? Thanks! --Guillaume2303 (talk) 15:02, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Guillaume, thanks for the great cleanup at the stub. I chose "semiannual" because that's what the sources are saying.[6][7] --Elonka 15:07, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Weird, I hadn't noticed that. Journalseek is often imprecise, but Thomson Reuters is mostly correct. Still, the journal homepage lists only 1 "paperback" per year back till 1993. It is, unfortunately, not very detailed (no info on refereeing, editorial board, and, indeed, frequency of publication). Nevertheless, it seems that in this case, the primary source (journal homepage) is in clear contradiction with the secondary sources. --Guillaume2303 (talk) 15:26, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
  • PS It get's even weirder, I just notice that if you click on one of the volumes, you get another page (example) that list "semi-annual" as.... publishing date! --Guillaume2303 (talk) 15:27, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
  • PPS: and the cover lists things like "54 (2010) 1" suggesting there is more than one issue. I guess we better leave it at semi-annual then. --Guillaume2303 (talk) 15:29, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Asking is better than wondering

Hello Elonka, I am curious if your decision to ignore my post to your talk page was meant to aggrieve. I'm not aware of any reason you may have against me and prefer to simply ask. My76Strat (talk) 01:56, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Hiya, thanks for the followup. To be honest, since your post was over a month ago I'm a bit fuzzy on the context. However, what probably happened is that I just read it, noted that it was about something that had happened weeks earlier than that even, and since there wasn't any particular question associated with it, there wasn't much I could offer. To be clear, I don't have anything against you, that I know of, and had no intention to aggrieve. If you still have any questions, please feel free to ask! --Elonka 16:00, 24 February 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I understand, thank you. - My76Strat (talk) 00:43, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

Please consider my comment Repeatedly raising the general issue about Malleus's incivility escalates, rather than deescalates the problem. I am sympathetic and understanding with you regards concerning Malleus Fatuorum's chronic borderline behavior and in fact, share them to a certain extent myself. I just don't think it's useful to keeping bringing it up unless there's a realistic chance of achieving consensus in a given situation. Nobody Ent 15:15, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

If someone is being abusive, their behavior needs to stop. If Malleus cannot adapt his behavior to abide by community norms, he is eventually going to be banned from the project. The choice is really his at this point, as to how he chooses to behave. --Elonka 17:15, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Agree; my short response is "I wish I knew what the community norms actually were." I wrote long version last November. Nobody Ent 02:18, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Mongol Empore

Hey there, I just wanted to share my thoughts on your project. I have my own notes on the Mongol Empire topic in general, at User:Sven Manguard/Chinese Dynastic Period Article Improvement Project#Yuan_Dynasty. As I said, right now I'm working on Liao Dynasty, which got bumped to the top of my list when I realized it was essentially a copyvio of Mote's Imperial China 900-1800. I've been rewriting it from scratch, so I've got a dozen books sitting on piles surrounding my desk.

Right now the biggest gap I'm seeing is science and technology. A little later in the month I'll be getting a few sources that deal with the spread of technology though the Mongol empire, and I'll chip in some prose when I have the chance. Gunpowder: The History of an International Technology, edited by Brenda J. Buchanan, is the book that will probably be of most use. Caveat is that the book is apparently crazy rare, and I'll only have access to it for about a month.

If you're looking for prose on women's rights and marriage practices, I have Women of the Conquest Dynasties by Linda Cooke Johnson (ISBN 9780824834043) on my desk, as I've been using it for the Liao Dynasty article. It's mostly Khitans and Jurchens, but has some stuff on the Mongols.

As for sourcing, there are a few issues. I'm surprised that neither Needham nor Ebrey are in there yet. There are also a number of less than stellar sources that Nikkimaria might take issue with.

I really am time pinched at the moment, but I'll see what I can do. Sven Manguard Wha? 21:29, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Agreed, the article needs alot of work, but gotta start somewhere! --Elonka 04:42, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Very true. I'll work on it with you as soon as I'm done with Liao Dynasty. Sven Manguard Wha? 19:29, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

New Page Triage engagement strategy released

Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyes@wikimedia.org.

It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 01:54, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Feedback sought on Muhammad / Functional Hatnote

Right now, I can hide all the images on my browser with a single keystroke. I can do this because I'm technically literate. Most of our readers aren't. For many (most?) readers, English is not a first language. And even native english speakers struggle with techspeak english.

I wrote a little script to give all readers the same functionality I have right now-- one click to hide all images on the article, one click to restore them all.

My naive home is that this function might exist as a techological "Switzerland" of sorts. I believe it's something we can all agree, regardless of our feelings about the Muhammad images themselves. The functional hatenote isn't about that big issue-- it's merely a more user-friendly way to do what we have always done-- allow users to browse without images.

Anyway, I'm very interested in feedback from you and your likeminded about whether you think it's good work, whether you think we can get a consensus going around at least that issue, etc. Your voice is a voice people listen to. Do you think I'm on the right track? --HectorMoffet (talk) 05:25, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

It's definitely worth bringing up in the RfC! --Elonka 06:43, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

I just noticed that this recently reached FA status. I plan to read through it again, as I did way back when, right after PHG created it. It appears to be the perfect example of how Wikipedian collaboration (through constructive criticism and consensus) can produce very solid results. I am not aware of many other articles of this quality on such an obscure topic with the background of disputes this one has. Nicely done. Srnec (talk) 03:12, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Martin's accusation

Elonka I may seem to be a bit touchy about this comment of Martins [8]. In this comment Martin makes another unsupported accusation about my editing, he has a long history of making this style of comment about me. I've tried to address this today by asking Martin on his talk page to give diffs.

4 or 5 of the pro arborsculpture group would make such comments about my editing/behavior with out giving diffs. Martin claiming I have COI as though I have been editing badly. diff Duff unfounded claims with my rebuttal diff

Which works great for them as a way of being able to point to these comments to prove I must be the issue not what ever point of content I'm trying to discuss. Martin's comment diff pointing to Johnuniq's earlier comment [9]. There are multiaple instances where Grisum Duff Slowart Martin have done this. I also think Colincbn may have done this once or twice but I have to hunt for the diffs.

And a few times when these editors seem stuck on answering my content questions, Johnuniq has come in and not answered my content questions but instead focused on my editing/behavior. This section of tree shaping talk illustrates what I mean about Johnuniq editing.

Basically they don't point to the evidence of my wrong doing they point to each-others' comments of my wrong doing to prove I must be a bad editor. It seems to me, the idea is to throw enough mud and some will stick.

I don't believe I should have to put up with this style of commenting on my editing/behavior, without them giving supporting diffs. It seems to me Martin can't help but to attack me when he is defending Slowart or the word Arborsculpture. Blackash have a chat 23:57, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

The Barnstar of Diligence
It was either this, "Admin's", or "Random Acts of Kindness" (or probably a few more). Thank you for your help in navigating the tree sculpting battleground, assuming good faith while at the same time being extremely diligent in your duties as an Administrator Most High, unfailingly civil, and forgiving. Re: Tagging

Are there any specific tags you are concerned with? I am always happy to discuss any of my edits. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 22:15, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

You seem to be on a sweep going through multiple articles, and tagging any which are using a different reference format than you prefer. As we discussed several years ago, it is not required for an article to have inline citations. Having sources at the bottom of the article is sufficient, and tagging such an article with {{nofootnotes}}, is, in my mind, just cluttering the wiki. Especially because you don't seem to be at all interested in improving the articles yourself, tagging does not seem appropriate. See WP:CITEVAR: "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference. Surely there are other things which would be a better use of your time, than re-tagging articles which we already argued about, years ago? --Elonka 22:21, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
If you have an issue with Template:No footnotes, I suggest WP:TFD. You are also misreading CITEVAR, IMHO. It concerns things like which inline style to use (harvard, ASA, other), not whether to use inline cites or not. For years, inline cites have been a requirement for most classes of articles (B and higher). I am simply doing a sweep of Category:C-Class Polish military history articles, assessing them for WP:POLAND and doing various other fixes when I feel I can do it. Contrary to your assertions, I have already improved two articles in the sweep from C to B class by adding references, but in most cases I only have time to tag the issue. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 22:28, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Inline citations are not required, and if you continue to tag articles that don't need tagging, that could be regarded as disruptive. Especially when you are deliberately tagging articles by someone that you have already been in a dispute with. Which goes double for any articles that are Poland-related. So please, stop, thanks. --Elonka 22:33, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
Re: "This article is currently at Start class, but could potentially be improved to B-class if it had more citations". I think that's a good idea, I'll update my wording from now on. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk to me 23:15, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Page protection, messy

Hey, the backlog at requests for page protection is insane, so I thought I'd request an admin to step in. Considering the people involved in this one, I couldn't think of any admin offhand who might not be accused by someone of being involved/biased. So I thought, "Who would be the one person nobody could accuse of being biased in favor of DreamGuy" and that was you. But then maybe the other editors on the page are someone you know, I don't know.

There are either 3 or 4 completely different versions different people are reverting to, and everyone seems to be rushing forward with very bold and very opposing massive edits. To clarify, I don't care which version gets protected at this point, just that it does. I'm not even trying to get back to what was the longstanding consensus version (or what I perceive as it anyway) since I don't want to get anywhere near a 3RR.

If you (or any admin watching this page) thinks you can be impartial, please take a look at Dissociative identity disorder and see if it deserves to be locked.

Much thanks either way.

DreamGuy (talk) 03:01, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Heh, thanks for thinking of me.  :) I see you've got a request at WP:RFPP, though I'll freely admit I don't usually patrol there. Hopefully one of the regular admins will take a look. In the meantime, I'll scan through to try and come up to speed as well. --Elonka 03:15, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

My new project - WWC

Hi Elonka! I hope all is well. I wanted to stop by to share a new project with you that I am developing, called the WikiWomen's Collaborative. I would love your input about the project.

WWC needs you!
  • You can find the project page here.
  • On the talk page, you'll find a number of questions I'm seeking input on. I'm especially seeking thoughts about hosting the space off of Wikipedia (in the WordPress section). I hope you will join in on the conversation.
  • Finally, this project will be developed with volunteers from around the world who want to engage and support bringing new women to Wikipedia. If you think you'd like to be involved in some capacity, that'd be awesome. We're still working on developing roles, but, you can learn more about volunteer opportunities here.

Thank you for the consideration and I hope you'll participate in developing this exciting new project to bring more women to Wikipedia! SarahStierch (talk) 00:18, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Advice requested: DotconnectAfrica

Dear Elonka, I am new here so am attempting to ask your advice regarding multiple issues I have tagged on the DotConnectAfrica page. As you were so constructively active on the Sophia Bekele page, I was hoping you could offer some guidance on how to handle the edit warring happening on the aforementioned DotConnectAfrica, Ms Bekele's organisation. Pretty much all of the content has been written by Tkamanzi who works for DCA and has disclosed such.

The article clearly needs tidying up:

A major contributor to this article appears to have a close connection with its subject. This article relies largely or entirely upon a single source. This article may contain improper references to self-published sources

and so forth. I have attempted to engage Tkamanzi in constructive dialogue, on our respective talk pages and tagged the article to move the discussion to the DotConnectAfrica talk page and endeavour to get consensus on how to move forward in improving the article. Sadly things are just turning into a revert war with the tags being reverted. Obviously I do not wish to participate in a revert war and was hoping you could point me in the right direction to resources to improve this article and engage in a positive way with Tkamanzi to this end.

Many thanks and I hope you can help. (Elekebia (talk) 11:56, 16 August 2012 (UTC))

Non-free rationale for File:Renaissance Magazine.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Renaissance Magazine.gif. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. The Missouri Botanical Garden needs your help!

Hi Elonka! The Missouri Botanical Garden is currently working on the Art of Life project, which might build a very useful collaboration with the Wikimedia Commons. They're currently working on creating computer software which can identify the hundreds of thousands of illustrations in the 39 million pages scanned and published online by the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). The identified illustrations are going to be pretty metadata-poor: the BHL only has bibliographic information on each book, and won't be able to add much more information to the images. The BHL is thinking about uploading those illustrations which are in the public domain to the Commons, where they could be used to illustrate Wikipedia articles and (hopefully!) have additional metadata added to them.

I worked with the BHL over the summer preparing the groundwork for this process, including setting up a collaboration page, setting up a category and creating a template for BHL metadata. But the next step -- building bridges between the BHL and the Commons -- is going to be critical, and I'd really appreciate your help in making that happen. User:Marcus Qwertyus suggested that you might be interested! I think your experience with categorization in particular could be a HUGE help in making this project a success.

I've just set up a mailing list to coordinate this project; please join in if you are interested! If you have any other questions or feedback, please feel free to get in touch with me on my talk page or by e-mail . -- Gaurav (talk) 20:28, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

The most critical issue involved in this article is that it is not about the aircraft but is substantially an account of the fated transatlantic attempt. There is possibly enough information to create a second article on the aircraft but the typical "Design-development-operational history-specifications" format really doesn't work here. Hi, I have no objection to having a separate article focused on Levasseur PL.8, just as we have an article on Levasseur PL.4, though we should probably do our best to minimize duplication between it and the article on The White Bird. Perhaps another way to proceed might be to add a section in the article The White Bird which is focused just on the Levasseur PL.8 specs? --Elonka 03:26, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
On reflection, that appears to be the best way to proceed. See the article now as it is morphing slightly into a more unique approach to an aircraft story. FWiW (talk) 04:30, 14 December 2012 (UTC).

Disambiguation link notification for December 28

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bass Anglers Sportsman Society, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Mark Davis and Gary Klein (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 12:31, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

I have moved the article John Baillie (colonel) to John Baillie of Leys as he was more than a military man including a stint as an MP back in Britain after he had finished in India and was also appointed a director of the East India Company in 1823. Even so the article could have remained at John Baillie (colonel), but I am researching another John Baillie (of Duncan) who was appointed colonel of the Royal Inverness Highlanders on 21 November 1794 and served in that capacity until the regiment was disbanded in 1802. -- PBS (talk) 18:54, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Hmm. Better would have been to suggest the move on the talkpage, and then if no objection, to move it after a couple days. Simply moving an article without any attempt at discussion is kind of against WP:RM. That said, I have no strong objection to the move, thanks for keeping me informed. --Elonka 16:13, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

  1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
  2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
  3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.
Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

A barnstar for you!

The Writer's Barnstar
This barnstar is awarded to Elonka for her good work on Joann Kealiinohomoku. To quote Molière: "All the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill the history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill at dancing." "Tous les malheurs des hommes, tous les revers funestes dont les histoires sont remplies, les bévues des politiques, et les manquements des grands capitaines, tout cela n’est venu que faute de savoir danser." Viriditas (talk) 02:39, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar. I agree with your quote. I wrote that article some years ago, but it's nice to know that it's appreciated. --Elonka 05:14, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Franco-Mongol alliance

This is a note to let the main editors of Franco-Mongol alliance know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 26, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or one of his delegates (Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs)), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 26, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Franco-Mongol relations were established in the 13th century, as Christian Crusaders and the Mongol Empire unsuccessfully tried to form an alliance against the Muslims, their common enemy. Contact between Europeans and Mongols began around 1220, and tended to follow a pattern: the Europeans asked the Mongols to convert to Christianity, while the Mongols (who had already conquered many Christian and Muslim nations in their advance across Asia) demanded submission and tribute. European attitudes began to change in the mid-1260s, from perceiving the Mongols as enemies to be feared, to potential allies against the Muslims. The Mongols sought to capitalize on this, promising a re-conquered Jerusalem to the Europeans in return for cooperation. Attempts to cement an alliance continued through negotiations, without success. The Mongols invaded Syria several times between 1281 and 1312, sometimes in attempts at joint operations with Crusader forces, but the forces never coordinated meaningfully because of logistical difficulties. The Mongol Empire eventually dissolved into civil war, and the Crusaders lost control of Palestine and Syria to the Egyptian Mamluks. (Full article...)

Can you check a link for me?

Hello. I am interested in editing the JC Penney article on Wikipeida. I have tried to remove some info, well this is what I am trying to remove- In 1998, JCPenney launched its Internet store, which has since grown into one of the largest apparel and home furnishings retail sites on the Internet.[13] . This statement is near the bottom of the article. My problem is this. I removed the bit about JC Penney having grown into one of the largest apparel and home furnishing retail sites on the Internet since the link number 13 seems dead and goes to a web page named Search dot com. I just wanted to reword it to say In 1998, JCPenney launched its Internet store. I did this because the link seems dead and the link is also 10 years old but I keep getting reverted by user Winkelvi, who says the link works fine. My question to you is can you clink link number 13 and see if its a dead link to you as well because I can't understand why I get a dead link and user Winkelvi does not. I am not trying to canvass or get an other editor on my side, but I don't understand why I get a dead link and he doesn't. It is link number 13 in the ref section. Thank you.--BeckiGreen (talk) 21:15, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Never mind. I asked my question at the Teahouse and got a answer.--BeckiGreen (talk) 21:48, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Your role as an administrator

You have done no recent blocks, no deletions, no protections so why did you become an administrator? You had to go through the RFA process 3 times to become an administrator. Yet you have done nothing since becoming an administrator that would justify you having these rights. I knew that you only wanted to have the admin badge so you could put it on your shirt for personal/ego satisfaction.

What this site needs are more admins who actually play an administrative role on the site, take tough decisions and play an active role in managing the site and therefore differentiate themselves from non-admin editors. There are many situations to resolve (Admin noticeboard) (edit warring, username requests, page protection requests, dispute resolution and much more) but no, you are not interested in any of this. You knew you would stay away from anything that could result in a de-op or anything that would require more intellectual work or responsibility, which is what admins are supposed to do.

Here's a response to one of the questions from the RFA:

  • What admin work do you intend to take part in?
    • A: I'd like to help clearing various backlogs, such as at WP:PROD, and to help ensure quick responses at WP:RFP and CAT:PER. I will also help a bit with vandal fighting. It won't be my primary activity, but if I spot an obvious vandal attacking an article, it will be helpful to have the tools so that I can deal with the situation on the spot, rather than having to go poke someone else to do it. I would also like to participate more at WP:DRV, where admin access can be helpful in seeing deleted edits. --Elonka 23:18, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

So have you been doing any of the admin work you promised? I may be wrong but it doesn't look like your activity is any different from what it was before you became an admin (contribs, logs).

Tell us how your role as an administrator can be justified, when your activity history could be easily be satisfied by being a typical editor, which is really what you have been all this time. I'm looking for a response from you, not from other editors. --Aweditor998 (talk) 04:17, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Since the poster said they weren't interested in anyone else's opinions... they won't be interested in this. :-) From looking at the logs and contribs they have so helpfully provided, it is clear that Elonka hasn't made any admin actions since January. But, frankly, she's only made 38 total edits since January. It looks like she's just not very active on the site recently. That's not a hanging offence. Sure, we'd all appreciate more active admins making good decisions. But given the choice between an inactive admin, and one who is active but makes bad decisions, I'd much prefer the inactive one. --GRuban (talk) 14:28, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Probably not interested in my opinion either. ;) For the record though, I became an admin in 2007 and those logs Aweditor998 so helpfully linked show a great deal of administrative work. Plus of course there's what I do with Arbitration Enforcement, where a summary can be seen here: User:Elonka/ArbCom log. Most recently I've been helping with the enforcement at Tree shaping, which seems fairly stable now. Not all of my work there is on-wiki -- some is via recent email with various editors. If I need to use admin access, I will, but my own policy has always been "less is more". I prefer resolving conflicts without using the tools. For me, blocking is generally a last resort, not a first one. --Elonka 17:30, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi there Elonka! I've noticed you have yourself listed as a member of the Food and Drink Wikiproject. Unfortunately it looks like the project has been slowly sliding into inactivity except for a couple of people. That makes me a sad potato, and nobody likes a sad potato amirite?

Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

Question about your arbitration statement

Hi Elonka. I'm disappointed that you feel my revert was inappropriate. Aside from Jclemens himself, I believe that you are the first person I have read who feels there was any problem with it. I take WP:INVOLVED very seriously, and as I told Jclemens, I did not reverse any of his administrative actions, such as the undeletion of the page or the filing of the spurious BLP enforcement action, even though I felt both actions were very serious mistakes. All I did was use the "undo" button to un-close an obviously improper close to the DRV itself. It has been my long-time understanding, based on many readings of WP:INVOLVED, that any editor, no matter how involved, is free to undo such an obviously out-of-process action, and I am curious to know why you disagree. 28bytes (talk) 23:24, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi 28bytes, thanks for asking. I do feel very strongly about any case where administrators are disagreeing with administrators. In the case of the DRV, it was already the case that one of your decisions (the AfD closure) was being challenged. You should have been completely hands-off of things at that point, and let the discussion play out. If Jclemens (or anyone) made an "obviously improper" close, then some other administrator could have restored the DRV, it didn't have to be you. If no one else restored it, then perhaps it wasn't as obvious (or urgent) a situation as it might have seemed to you at the time. --Elonka 23:34, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
Hi Elonka. Thanks for your quick reply. I agree, it would have been better if someone else had undone the close. I'm just surprised that you think it merits an admonishment. I do think the case was obvious (I have yet to find anyone who believes that his close shouldn't have been undone) and, if not urgent, certainly important: letting the deletion review process play out to its natural conclusion gives everyone a chance to weigh in and make their voices heard. As I told Jclemens when I undid the close, "Let's just both be patient and let the DRV run its course." I'm surprised to find that letting the DRV run its course would be in any way controversial, no matter whose edit allowed it to happen. 28bytes (talk) 00:26, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Well, maybe not an admonishment, just a reminder. :) As for obviousness, again, if it was truly obvious, someone else would handle it soon enough, yes? I think I am treating it more seriously than other situations, too, simply because of your current candidacy. I'd rather that you started your term in a clean way, rather than under any kind of cloud about controversial decisions. --Elonka 01:05, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
I would certainly prefer to start my term (if elected) in a clean way as well. :) Thanks for taking the time to discuss this with me. 28bytes (talk) 01:08, 15 December 2013 (UTC)

User Talk:28bytes

For what it is worth, I think your point may have been lost. It might be better if you cut down on the analysis or otherwise to make it clear you are congratulating 28bytes on trying to do the right thing, which I think was the thrust of your message.--Tznkai (talk) 01:02, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

True, perhaps not as clear a post as it could have been, especially as I was trying to make the point of, "If this would have happened before/during the election," but it's already been replied to at this point, so I don't think editing it would have much benefit at this point. Thanks for the comment though! --Elonka 14:16, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on North American Spine Society, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Proposed deletion of John Born

The article John Born has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Promotional article for a magician that fails WP:GNG and WP:CREATIVE.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. And as I said, I have made thousands of edits already as IP, to a large extent consisting of reverting vandalism when I happened across it whilst perusing things I found of interest. Liz, you no doubt saw that I was told my edit would have been reverted for lack of cites, even if I had 500 edits - and even though the previous cites supported my edit. I have reason to believe the original revert was done by a sock. I just now noticed Strongjam edited my talk page in an attempt to hide a message to me about that person. Or maybe the dates at WP:ACE2015 are wrong.  :-)     Usually I would just fix the discrepancy, but in this case, since it is userspace and since you might have up-to-date info whereas the 'official' page might be outdated, I figured I would just ping you instead. Your voter guide

Hello. I prefer transclude your voter guide (and the others) into a single page (to facilitate reading and comparisons).

  1. When doing that, the resulting page becomes a member of the [[Category:Wikipedia Arbitration Committee Elections 2015 voter guides]]. To correct that, the Category in your page should be protected by a pair of <noinclude>...</noinclude>.
  2. Moreover, you are using second level sections, i.e. ==xxx==, in your guide. After transclusion, the TOC looks bad. If you were using third level sections, i.e. ===xxx===, the TOC would look better. (problem solved)

In the Main space, I would have done that by myself. In your Userspace, I think it is polite to ask your permission. Pldx1 (talk) 20:24, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for January 4

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Gallup, New Mexico, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Zuni. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
