Features for new users coming soon (and mentors, like you, wanted!)

Hello. As you're currently listed as a host at the Teahouse, I wanted to make sure you're aware of the imminent rollout of new Growth Team Features which every new account will be getting by default. Each users will soon see a new 'Homepage' tab next to their User page. It contains two main elements which might impact on your involvement - and you'd be welcome to get involved and help out directly with one of them.

  • Firstly, they will be offered a range of 'suggested edits', and encouraged to make simple improvements to pages that interest them. (Being aware of this feature would be helpful for all Teahouse hosts if you're likely to offer advice on tasks for them to start out doing.)
  • There's also a 'Your impact' box to show them how many people have seen the pages they've just edited.
  • Finally, each new user is randomly assigned a 'mentor' from a list of friendly, experienced editors, like yourself. If they get stuck, they can ask a question directly to them via a Your mentor box, and hopefully get a swift, friendly answer from that mentor. Currently, this feature is given to 2% of new users, but it's set to increase to around 10% in the very near future.

To spread the load on our current list of around 65 mentors, I'm reaching out to ask if you'd like to help out and sign up as one? The workload is relatively small; User Panini! reports receiving four questions a month, on average, all of which were simple ones of the type we already get at the Teahouse, whilst I've had just one in the last 3 weeks. To view a list of every question asked of all mentors over the last 14 days, click here.

If becoming a mentor and being available to help new users on their first few days here interests you - just as you already do at the Teahouse - then please consider signing up at Growth Team features/Mentor list. But please only do so if you can genuinely be available to help new users with a reasonably timely response. Existing users can already 'opt-in' to seeing the Newcomer Homepage features via their Preferences.

Hi Nick Moyes, it's nice to hear from you. I'm definitely not a high school student anymore, so thanks for telling me so I can update it (or maybe remove it temporarily because I'm not really on Wikipedia as often as I'd like and I wouldn't want someone to reach out and not be able to get an answer). Post-secondary is going well. I actually ended up doing a different program at a different institution than originally intended. I don't think I'm going to opt-in right now because I'm really busy with everything. I have a 30-credit courseload each semester right now plus a part-time job. I'm thinking of quitting because even those two things together can feel overwhelming. But things should be less busy about a year and a half from now so if you still need people at that point I'll take another look at it. Thank you for thinking of me! Gosh - you sound busy and pressured. Better than not doing anything, of course. You're talking to someone to whom that makes no sense either way! But working hard is often the best way. My eldest got her 1st class honours BSc degree earlier this year, and the youngest is getting comparable top grades in her general coursework in their 1st uni year. So, it's looking good. @Clovermoss Gosh - that's an early end. I think my daughters is towards end of June. All the recent changes have been to the Dashboard functionality, making it easier to display only the accounts you're interested in (like only those who have edited in the last 7 days, for example). You can mark yourself as being 'away' which seems like a good idea, and also choose whether you want to be allocated mentees at the standard rate, or above or below that rate. I've set mine to 'average' and, to be honest, have only had like three questions in total since March. All related to promotional content, and were easily dealt with. This is lucky, as I'm finding I'm increasingly pulled away into other real-life issues these last few months. I don't feel obliged to proactively follow up or welcome those assigned to me, though I know some other editors have been making a point of adding welcome messages. @Nick Moyes: It's actually considered standard here, not just my academic program/institution being unusual. It's a Canada thing. :) I've heard that even our American neighbours don't have that four month break. Sometimes people take classes during the spring, but they're the exception rather than the rule. Thanks for letting me know what to expect in regards to this, though. That sounds manageable, especially now that I don't have to worry about academic deadlines. @Nick Moyes: So far two people have shown up on the dashboard. I've welcomed both, but so far I haven't heard back. It's only been about a day so it's possible I might still, but I also remember I don't typically hear back from welcome messages in general and I wonder if this will be any different? Do you typically reach out to the people who pop up on the dashboard or just wait to see if they ask you anything? I don't want be overwhelming with my enthiuasm. @Clovermoss To be honest: I don't. I do sometimes take an overview of who these new users are, and either welcome a productive editor, or take action against a disruptive one. I don't see mentorship as eating up much of my time unless I am directly asked a question. I have welcomed a few active new editors, but don't feel it's an obligation on me to do so. RfA

Hi Clever. I have found, including with my own RfA, that concerns about RfA are often bigger for the candidate than the community as a whole. If you would ever like to discuss those concerns know my talk page and email box are open to you. I'll end with about the only thing I know about RfA with a huge degree of certainty: "The single best indicator that you're ready to run is respected editors, especially sysops, telling you that you're ready to run" so if there are others who echo Ymblanter I hope you'd reconsider your NOTQUITEYET stance. I appreciate you reaching out, really I do, but I still have my concerns about being a NOTQUITEYET. I've only contributed in a handful of AfDs, made a few dozen reports to WP:ANV and WP:UAA, etc. I don't think of myself as active enough in any of those areas to be making the kinds of calls that admins make. I'll email you to elaborate a bit more about my other concerns; even I wouldn't say they're dealbreakers by themselves, just something more time and experience would help fix. As I said, I don't think it's a never but I really don't think it's something I would want to be doing soon. In regards to the sysops telling me to run part, I've never heard anything like that apart from the comment Ymblanter had made at WT:RFA, which was part of the reason I was so suprised to hear it.
By the way, I'll take the mistake of "Clever" as a compliment, but my username is Clovermoss. Clover is fine as a nickname, if you want one. You're not the first person to accidently write that, which is why I created my alternative account User:Clevermoss (which is declared on my userpage) for the pings. @Sdkb: I saw this before, but I wasn't sure what to say. Honestly, the more I've been thinking about it the more I've been thinking that I'm not sure that that's something I ever want to do. I'm good with just exploring my interests on-wiki and there's no need to rush deciding something like that. Even in general, I feel like I have a lot to learn. I want to be more confident in regards to everything. If I ever did, it would definitely be something in the distant future. I still feel vastly inexperienced in a lot of the ways that are relevant to that path. But I was wondering why you thought this way? The few people who reached out to me about this surprised me, because I thought my NOTQUITEYET stance was the obvious one to take. I still do because I don't really have any need for the tools and I don't feel experienced enough in those areas to justify trying to ask for them. I'm asking now because I was thinking I should archive my talk page (especially now that I'm on the Growth Team mentor list and I think that the first two sections should be more prominent for new editors who might come here). My impression of editors builds up over a bunch of interactions, most of which I don't remember long-term, so I can't really point to specifics, other than that I've found you to be a helpful, civil, insightful, pleasant editor to interact with. Your stance, perhaps a little ironically, is very much in keeping with that — the folks we want as admins are not the ones chasing it as a hat at the first opportunity, but rather the ones who approach it cautiously over time. Hi Halo Jimin. So there's some things to be mindful of when uploading an image to Wikipedia. The first thing that I think you should know, especially since you asked me another question above about publicizing a brand, is that you should likely read our conflict-of-interest policy. If you're being paid for your edits here, you must disclose this. If you're not and you're just enthiuastic about a certain brand, I understand. We live in a world full of products and marketing, so yeah, people are going to write about brands. An example of what that can look like can be found at Google. The second thing is to read our image use policy. Depending on what you're trying to upload, it might be fair use if it's a a logo, but in general it's important to be extremely careful if you don't own the copyrights to whatever it is you're uploading. The Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard explains how you can upload an image. Does this answer your questions? I can clarify if you need me to, or answer any other questions you have about editing. @Wiae: Thanks for the message. I was trying to figure out if that title was better since the wikilinked articles in the see also section don't have the v. format. Awesome, happy to help and hope you enjoy the book. I don't know much about pre-Charter case law but it seems there are plenty of gaps in Wikipedia's coverage of cases from those days. If I had to guess, I'd say Chaput v Romain would make for a good article too. /wiae /tlk 10:38, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
@Wiae: In general I think my focus over the next few months is going to be expanding articles I've started. I do have quite a bit of free time for the next few months so I might be able to get around to looking into this more, though. Thanks for the suggestion. I will say that a lot of cases involving Jehovah's Witnesses have had interesting civil rights implications because of their beliefs (not standing up for national anthems/saluting flags, no military service, door-to-door preaching, etc). West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette is a good example of this, although it's an American legal case. I will say that's one thing that's stuck with me since I've lost my faith years ago; I still consider myself to be a pacifist, even if I disagree with a lot of other practices (e.g. shunning, blood tranfusions, their stance on LGBT+ rights). Agreed, many of these cases raise interesting questions. I hadn't read Barnette before but it is certainly fascinating. I remember reading R v Blaue and Malette v Shulman in law school, both of which have stuck in my memory. Malette might actually be notable; although it did not make it to the Supreme Court, it was cited favourably in Cuthbertson v Rasouli and there is lots of law review coverage that could make out notability (a dissenting take published in the McGill Law Journal as well as views expressed here, although I haven't read that). @Wiae: Indeed, there's an endless list of things to do. It's cool that you actually went to law school, though. I technically had 2 law classes in high school but I was part of the graduating class of 2020 so it was more like one and a half classes. I'll still do my best to improve the articles that I can, but you'd likely be better at writing content for these types of articles than I am. Hi Bernarusan. I don't have any control over how regions show up, unfortunately. I understand that it's frustrating to not have it be what you'd expect. I will say that I've always thought of Mexico as part of North America. That's the way I learned it in school, but I'm not American. Our article on Mexico says that too. This might be something to bring up on here [1]. It's technically a different website hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation but you might be able to get that changed or at least recieve an answer for why things are listed the way they are. Hi Jmadson10, of course I'll let you know the reason. So right now, Draft:Josh Madson is very short. It's only a sentence or so and it's cited to only one source. This page explains our standards for inclusion for articles about people, because we don't actually have articles about everything or everyone that exists. Otherwise we'd have a lot of resumes and we're not LinkedIn. I will say that being in a head position for US Agriculture sounds like it could be something that could be notable about Madison, but there still should be citations to mutiple, independant, reliable sources that discuss him in detail to demonstrate why he is important. Does that help? I will also say that it's important to declare any potential conflict-of-interest you may have. I'll leave a message on your talk page that explains that further. Women in Green - July GA Editathon

WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Editathon event in July 2022!

Running from July 1 to 31, 2022, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) editathon event focused on the topic of women and the environment. Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works during the event period (with an emphasis on environmental links and topics). St. Catharines

Thanks for your question about article assessment at St. Catharines. I don't know much about assessment, and just about every article I've ever written has been a stub. One article I wrote, Kodak Black, has had 1,177,452 views in the past year, and is still rated as "start" and "low-importance", and I've only taken one article, Lake Ontario Ordnance Works, to "good article". My biggest concern with St. Catharines is that it needs to be re-ordered to correspond with WP:CCSG. This is an issue with many Canadian articles. I find that once an article has a solid and familiar outline, the editing improves. But I agree St. Catharines is a "C", as it has lots of unsourced sections that is just basically "stuff people know" which gets added to the article in good faith. Oh, and I had one Canadian article, Val Gagné, Ontario, featured on a "Did you know". Cheers! Magnolia677 (talk) 17:45, 25 June 2022 (UTC)

@Magnolia677: Okay, thanks! Improving St. Catharines is on my to-do list because I lived there for like 6 years. Technically not my hometown, but still, fond memories. I've written a few articles about the city, like Morningstar Mill and Burgoyne Bridge. A really really long-term goal is improving basically all the articles related to the Niagara Region but I wouldn't be surprised if that's a goal that takes me years, honestly. My Wikipedia to-do list is starting to look like my TBR (to be read) list. Anyways if you ever see anything that's in Ontario that you need like a photo of or something, keep me in mind! Ontario is a magnificent place and I've been fortunate to do a few road trips there. Morningstar Mill is well done, as is Burgoyne Bridge (too bad about the suicides). A while back I wrote Multi-way bridge, which the world needs more of. I also forgot about St. Johns, Ontario in Thorold, which I expanded from a redirect, and which had a "did you know".

An article which torments me is Florida, Cochrane District. A few years back I recall reading a short history of Florida, something about how the rugged farmers gave it a go, but were hampered by the short growing season, and the cost of shipping produce to market. I've search all over for this source again, with no luck.

I'm sharing with you some of the Ontario (and one Quebec) articles I've written, because many of the sources were hard to find, and may help you with your research.

Also, this is an excellent resource.

But her name is Cecil, not Cecile. The page was originally created by the Women in Red project.

You might want to read this as it gives a lot of useful advice for figuring out how to do things like that. I mentioned that you have a conflict of interest in one of my other comments, but I understand if you missed that and if I didn't make myself clear enough the first time. I'll send an automated message a bit later that explains things a bit more. You're still able to edit the article, but there's some things you should know. @Margxx: Thanks for thinking of me, but I'm not the best person to ask. I prefer being able to understand all cited sources, if possible. I'm also a relatively new AfC reviewer, so I'm a bit more cautious in regards to how I've been reviewing in general because I'm worried I'm going to make mistakes. Sources do not have to be English, but I only understand English and French so personally I'd just not be comfortable with reviewing this. It seems like you're off to a good start, though. Have you taken a look at Wikipedia's criteria for including articles about individual companies or products and services? Being familiar with it will help with an AfC draft about a company being reviewed. Project Surname

Night editing

This is even more off-topic, so I'm starting a new one. You mentioned editing at night; I'm guessing you've probably heard about human responses to the timing of light exposure, and presumably about Wikipedia:Dark mode (now a togglable gadget) and maybe about software like Redshift? I set my screen to dim and redden (in steps, so I notice the passing of time) as it got later, ignoring the time of year. It made editing a calmer, more relaxing thing to do in the evenings (that could be placebo effect, or a better sense of time passing, but do I care?). Circadian rhythms in mental activity fortunately seem to have a more minor effect on sleep![5]

I hope life isn't being too stressful for you at the moment, and you aren't having to deal with too many people who feel they are entitled to be obnoxious to you because they are older and not doing your job. I know someone whose first job was in a shop which had a notice behind the counter, visible only to staff; it colourfully condemned customers, then concluded with "...unfortunately, they are also [expletive] necessary". He said it helped; a sort of it's-not-me-it's-them sympathy against utterly unreasonable behaviour. HLHJ (talk) 20:05, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

@HLHJ That sign sounds amazing. My current real life issues are not really related to my job, but it gets difficult sometimes. I have people yell at me for things that are completely out of my control (like how some other place 50+ km from here apparently sells coffee for 10 cents less than we do, etc). In general people are fairly nice or apathetic, it's the people who aren't that stick out in your memory. I've gotten slightly better at standing up for myself over time, but I still have some difficulties with it. My coworkers sometimes take over if I'm not advocating for myself enough. Thanks for caring about me.
As for sleep, in general I tend to sleep well but it's not unusual for me to wake up in the middle of the night, especially if I go bed early. Other times it's nightmares. Especially lately. Which sucks, but I've dealt with them for years so I'm used to them at this point. The there's the whole random night shifts making my sleep schedule fragmented even if it's enough sleep in total hours, which isn't ideal for anyone's health. I've never really found waking spontaneously in the night to be a problem, either, I just don't like bright lights in the night. Nightshifts are much nastier when they aren't regular; nightmares are just unpleasant.
Customers... Given aformentioned effects of being nasty, there's not even a functional argument for yelling at people who have no power to fix whatever is so angering. There isn't even a call for the sort of irreproachable formal politeness that implies that one's interlocutor is behaving reprehensibly: the people who messed up are unlikely to be taking complaints, so the person taking the complaint is a co-victim. I mean, "I know this isn't your fault, but man is your employer incompetent!" works better, it's more accurate, and it's kinder. But people just get angry on counterproductive instinct.
I hope your life gets less issuefull soon, and if I can do anything more helpful than spout sympathetic haphazardly-targetted info, let me know. HLHJ (talk) 23:07, 31 July 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Clovermoss,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Interface administrators

Regarding this comment: although of course someone with skills related to bots might also have skills related to web page coding and MediaWiki, the two sets of skills are essentially independent. Interface administrators need to understand CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and how the MediaWiki software renders the user interface. Bot coders generally need to understand the MediaWiki API for accessing and modifying content, and whatever language of their choice to implement the bot. If they want to run the bot on the toolforge platform, then they'll need to know that environment as well. isaacl (talk) 20:54, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

For one thing, Wikipedia is not for promotion, so if the SEO in your username stands for search engine optimization, that's not what Wikipedia is supossed to be about. Redirect reviews

Here is some feedback. I noticed you reviewed Ollywood TV. It had R from move, and you even formatted that with the Rcat shell. But is wasn't actually a move - the creator just copied that text. I always check the page history before reviewing redirects. In this case, since it wasn't an actual move, I checked further and saw that "Ollywood TV" wasn't even mentioned at the target, so sent it to RFD MB 16:12, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

I was looking at this redirect on a mobile device where I can't search easily. So I just left it, then when I came back to it I saw that you had reviewed it. I looked deeper and sent it to RFD. @MB That's understandable. If you do end up having time to spotcheck my redirects at some point, I'd appreciate it. I'm still technically going through NPP school but asking Onel5969 something like that when they've stepped away from NPP doesn't really feel right to me... but whenever I've had specific questions, they've been really good at answering so I'd probrably ask them in those cases.
As for mobile editing... there's actually a huge discussion on this talk page relevant to that! It mostly focuses on the android app, so if you have some perspective about mobile editing in general, feel free to participate. I don't use any apps. I mostly edit on my desktop with a full size keyboard. Sometimes, I use an iPad, but go to the standard website in desktop mode. I mostly review redirects that way, since the number of keys involved is minimal. MB 22:46, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
@MB: Oh I haven't tried to do anything NPP-wise through the app. As far as I can tell, there isn't even an option to view recent changes. Even if there was a way, I'm a bit anxious that it wouldn't work well. I'm aware that almost no one uses the app to edit (at least that I'm aware of), which is why I've been experimenting with it lately. Usually I'm like you in the "mobile editing via desktop view" camp when I'm doing mobile editing at all. But if you're curious, this is what I've observed so far: User:Clovermoss/Mobile editing. I'd still say that the overall experience through desktop is much better, but certain apsects of the app have grown on me, I guess. Other aspects still frustrate me immensely. Hi Dedalien, that's a good question! I don't mind answering, so I'll answer. I will say that it's definitely something I've wondered about myself. Why do I even edit here? I will say that I find it furfilling. I'd say one of the reasons I like it is that I've had a lot of friendly interactions with people and I feel like I'm part of a greater community. This is pretty much my main hobby. I do have other interests, though. I also like reading, knitting, playing video games, climbing trees, running, biking, bowling, etc. My point is that I do have a life outside of Wikipedia.
I think another thing I like is that it broadens my perspective on the world. My early childhood involved a more... isolated environment? Very religious and no one openly disagreed with each other on anything. So I've always been interested in the Internet and learning more about other perspectives because if I hadn't started questioning my beliefs as a preteen, who knows what my life would have been like right now? I probably would have attended Gilead or lived at Bethel. I'd also likely be married because everyone in my family was married and had kid(s) at my age. I think parenthood is wonderful for the people who are interested in it (not everyone is and that's okay), but I want more time to just be me first. I'm still trying to figure out who I am as a person.
I've always been a huge reader so I'm also a fan of the idea of using what I've learned to help others who are interested. A lot of the the articles about topics I'm interested in are in rather rough shape so a long-term goal of mine is trying to improve them. I'm also trying to contribute to this challenge. If you have any specific interests and think you'd like to be a part of something like that, let me know and I'll try to help. @Isopet Hi and welcome to Wikipedia! So the first thing I want to say, is have you heard about women in red? It's a wikiproject dedicated to improving women's coverage on Wikipedia. I'd also describe whoever you're writing about as an 'author', not an 'authoress'. There's some futher advice over at Wikipedia:Writing about women.
In general, a really good page for helping you figure out how to start an article is this. A more specific example, since you asked for one, about a good article about an author can be found over at Margaret Atwood. It can take a lot of time to write something like that, but I have faith in you! The gist is that Wikipedia articles need to be what we consider notable, written from a neutral point of view, verifiable, and articles about living people have some extra important things to keep in mind. Also, I think the word you're looking for is biography, not biopic?
I hope I wasn't too overwhelming with all of these links. I was just trying to be helpful, but feel free to take your time looking through it all. As I said, I have faith in you. @Mpromax Are you talking about Nithra Apps? That would be because articles do not appear through search engines until they are reviewed by others. I will say that I think it would be useful if you read this page about Wikipedia's guidelines for including articles about companies. The gist is that you need three sources that aren't connected to the subject (independant – so not something like sponsored content), reliable (like a newspaper), and doesn't only mention the app in passing (there's substantial content about it). Does this help or do you need me to clarify anything?

Yes, I find it useful. According to Wikipedia's rules I wrote an article and included references from trustworthy sources in it.How long will it take the reviewers to evaluate that article? They've nominated the article for deletion and a link to participate in the discussion is on your talk page (see User talk:Mpromax). They think it's a non-notable company and clarify that sources do not actually mention it, so you should explain why you think that is not the case on the discussion page itself. @Mpromax So I think you may be misunderstanding what the purpose of the link I just gave you was? When someone starts an Articles for Deletion (AfD) discussion, they do it because they think the article doesn't meet our standards for inclusion (see this page I linked earlier). You think it does, so you should explain that. These discussions last 7 days and you can participate to explain why you think the article shouldn't be deleted (this could be linking to sources that do talk about the company and meet the requirements described in the page that I linked). There's still plenty of articles that can be improved or even started (see Wikipedia:WikiProject India). Because web browsers in the future might stop parsing <strike> properly, it is best to use the updated syntax so that pages continue to render properly. HTML is easier than you think! Your signature has HTML (<span>), and you probably have used it other times without even knowing. <sub>, <u>, and <!--Comments--> are all HTML in wikitext. Newcomers tasks reach the 500,000 edits milestone — more data publicly available

As of the last week of June 2022, the newcomers of the world have completed over 500,000 newcomer tasks. In other words, newcomers have made over half a million Wikipedia edits via Growth’s “Suggested Edits” module.

  • About 30% of those edits were completed on mobile devices.
  • Usage continues to increase; in June 2022 almost 50,000 newcomer tasks were completed.

We have added some new data to Grafana. You can now check the number of edits and reverts by task types, or the number of questions asked to mentors. You can filter the data by wiki.

Ongoing projects and explorations

The new impact module is part of the Positive Reinforcement project. The image displays the mockup for mobile we used for user testing.

We are continuing our work on our new project, Positive Reinforcement. User testing of initial Positive Reinforcement designs was just completed. Interviews were conducted in Arabic, English, and Spanish. The outcome has been published on the Positive Reinforcement page. We are now utilizing user testing feedback along with prior community feedback to iterate and improve designs.

We are exploring the idea of a Copy Edit structured task. We have tested copy edits in Wikipedia articles for arwiki, bnwiki, cswiki, eswiki (Growth pilot-wikis) and enwiki with two different methods: LanguageTool and Hunspell. We will share more details here and on the associated Copy Edit page once the evaluation is complete.

Add an image was utilized at GLAM events in Argentina, Mexico, and Chile. For an overview of what was learned from these events, read: #1Pic1Article I: how Latin American heritage experts added images to Wikipedia (in English).

Experiments analysis

Add a Link Experiment Analysis has been published. The most important points are:

  • Newcomers who get the Add a Link structured task are more likely to be activated (i.e. make a constructive first article edit).
  • They are also more likely to be retained (i.e. come back and make another constructive article edit on a different day).
  • The feature also increases edit volume (i.e. the number of constructive edits made across the first couple weeks), while at the same time improving edit quality (i.e. the likelihood that the newcomer's edits aren't reverted).

Newcomer task edit type analysis has been published.

  • Communities had expressed concern that newcomers whose initial edits were structured tasks wouldn’t go on to learn how to complete more difficult tasks. The Growth team data scientist conducted a Newcomer task edit type analysis to see if this was indeed the case.
  • Results from analysis indicate that this likely isn’t a significant concern. More than 70% of users who start with the easy task "Add a link" also make another task type. Read the full analysis and methodology here.

News for mentors

A new system for the mentors list

The configuration of the mentors list will change over the next weeks. In the future, mentors will sign up, edit their mentor description and quit using Special:MentorDashboard. This new system will make the development of new features for mentors much easier.

At the moment, the mentor list is a simple page anyone can edit, unless it’s protected. With the new page, mentors will be able to edit only their own description, while administrators will be able to edit the entire mentors' list if needed.

The deployment will happen first at the pilot wikis, then at all wikis. Existing lists of mentors will be automatically converted, no action will be needed from the mentors. [7][8]

Mentors will be informed about the next steps soon, by a message posted on the talk page of existing Mentor lists.

A tip for mentors

Did you know that mentors can filter their mentees' changes at Special:MentorDashboard (and star the ones that require attention)? This feature helps to keep an eye on newcomers' edits, helping mentors to fix minor details, and encourage them if necessary.

And did you know that mentors have special filters to highlight their mentees' edits at Special:RecentChanges? Look for the following filters in RecentChanges: Your starred mentees, Your unstarred mentees.

Other improvements

Some improvements will be made to the mentor dashboard in the coming weeks:

  • While we now offer some options for mentors to take a break, the option to quit mentoring was not easy to find. This will be improved. [9]
  • Mentors at wikis using FlaggedRevisions will have a way to discover their mentees' pending edits. [10]
  • Dashboard discovery for new mentors will be improved. [11]

Recent changes and fixed bugs

  • We moved to a new Image Suggestions API. This new API will allow us to deploy Add an Image to more wikis. [12]
  • Starting September 19, a few more wikis now offer Add an image to newcomers. These wikis are Greek Wikipedia, Polish Wikipedia, Chinese Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia. [13]
  • Add an image has been disabled for a few days due to technical issue. "Add an image" added a blank line instead of an image. This has been fixed. [14]
  • In order to know if Special:EditGrowthConfig is used by communities, we now instrument page loads and saves of configuration. [15]

Hi Kudpung. This is not the first time someone has asked me about this, you'd be the fourth. I'm not very impressive, really. Feel free to dig if you want. Maybe you'll see what I keep telling people. I'm just not very experienced in admin-related areas so I don't I'd be quite ready to actually be an admin. There's really no reason for me to be. If I wanted to run, I would want to be confident that I actually know what I'm doing in regards to that.
So in general, my answer has been not never, but not now. I think sometimes people keep talking to me because I haven't definitively turned down the idea? I just turned 20 a few weeks ago so I have a lot of time to change my mind, I guess. What happened to ScottishFinnishRadish really made me hesistant to ever consider it, though. I feel really passionate about that: [16][17]
Taking a look specifically at WP:RFAADVICE:
  • Basics – I think I'm competent in some things and awful at others, but there's potential for me to improve. As for treating this as a serious project, I'm somewhere between a serious and casual attitude. Editing Wikipedia isn't the end of the world and it isn't the only thing I care about in my life. I recognize that there are many things that are serious about contributing here: an inaccurate BLP could ruin someone's life because that's going to be what the Internet at large is going to be reading, even if we have disclaimers about our content. I'm aware of controversies like the Wikipedia Seigenthaler biography incident.
  • Blocks – I've never been blocked or even warned for anything.
  • Civility – I've never had issues with civility. I don't think I've ever lost my cool.
  • Content/Creations – I was involved with a GA once, but it's quite short. See Katherine Hughes (activist) if you're interested. That's my most substantial content-related contribution, my namespace percentage is somewhat misleading. I have stubs too, everything I've ever done anything with is listed at User:Clovermoss/Content. I start articles from redirects sometimes, so xtools isn't completely accurate. A long-term goal of mine has been improving some of the earlier articles I started. I don't really have a history with anything of mine being nominated for deletion, except the one time I put an article I started at AfD (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/St. Catharines Collegiate Secondary School).
  • Diversity – I do a little bit of everything but I don't think I really specialize in anything
  • Fresh/Clean Start – not applicable. This is the only account I've ever had on Wikipedia (other than Clevermoss as a doppleganger because sometimes people get my username wrong and I want to be pinged). I do have some previous history at wikiHow from 2014 to 2016 (between the ages of 12 and 14). I left on good terms and iirc was never blocked there, either.
  • Low edit count/Length of membership – I've seen a comment in a recent RfA that candidates should have at least 20,000 edits. I don't meet that. I have 14,963 according to xtools, over 4 years (only 3 of which I were truly active). 10,000-15,000 seems to be the more typical range where people consider you as a candidate, but there's more to someone that their edit count.
  • Activity level – in general I'm fairly active, but I took a year wikibreak once. It was not a good point in my life, editing Wikipedia was the last thing I cared about at the time.
  • Judgement – I think I have decent judgement, but I'm obviously biased here :)
  • Maturity – I think I'm relatively mature but at the same time I don't try to hide my youthful spirit. I turned 16 like a week and a half before I created my account but I've never done anything seriously wrong here.
  • User talk – I have provided help to new users: this is an example. I have a lot of Wikipedia-related conversations on user talk pages (see above). Occasionally I have off-topic conversations but I usually try to throw that in with something Wikipedia-related. I've done some counter-vandalism work, so that is also a factor.
  • User page – I think it could be better organized but in my opinion it's decent.

@ScottishFinnishRadish: Neither of us is a horse, but that still doesn't mean I feel ready. I seriously don't feel like I am. I also really do not like the chance of social rejection. I know my worthiness as a person doesn't really equate to what people say at an RfA but finding out that people don't trust me would just not be good because of what it would remind me of. The situations aren't really comparable, one is definitively more awful in every way, but I just don't think I'd deal with it well at this point in my life. I have enough self-awareness to know that needlessly putting myself through a stressful experience when there's already a ton of stressful things going on in my life beyond my control is just not a good idea.
