Change the sentence: "Multiple journalists, scholars, and commentators have called the slogan racist, regarding it as dog-whistle politics and coded language.[2][3][4][5]" to "Some journalists, scholars, and commentators have expressed that in their opinion, the slogan may be racist, attempting to link it to dog-whistle politics and coded language."

Add, "Others, however, have interpreted the slogan entirely differently, saying it has "vision" to it and that it alludes to stronger economic times, employment opportunities, and security. [2] This wild dichotomy of interpretation both lends to the popularity of Trump's slogan just as much as its infamy, something that David Axelrod, former Chief of Staff to President Obama, credits to the flexibility and simplicity of the message, allowing it to resonate with specific target audiences. Not done: The first suggested change introduces a number of MOS:WEASEL words, which would no longer accurately reflect the definiteness of their conclusions. The second change, a suggested addition, would equate the reported opinions of people who are not journalists, scholars, or commentators, with those who are (for instance, the person reported as having used the term "vision" is an audio engineer). The language also introduces an analysis of the phrase not present in the source: that there is a "wild dichotomy of interpretation" and that the dichotomy "lend to the popularity" of the slogan. "MAGA Communism" Section[edit]

There is currently a discussion on the Jackson Hinkle article about whether to include "MAGA Communism" in this article and remove it from that article. Here are the RS with more information about "MAGA Communism".[1][2] I would expect it to be in the "Derivative slogans" section. Alleycat1995 (talk) 13:33, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

RE: moving MAGA Communism proposal

Just to say this was a suggestion I made and another contributor supported, but in hindsight based on the current length of the section it may be deemed inappropriate for MAGA, and instead better suited to Hinkle's page with a short reference in this one. I'd otherwise say on reflection it would be better suited to the References to the slogan by others section, or even a standalone section, given it's technically not a derivative of MAGA, but instead a "type of" MAGA politic. Pinging top contributors for comment.

I agree with CommunityNotesContributor. As things stand, I do not think a full "MAGA Communism" article would be longer than this. It is also mainly associated with Hinkle (so I would oppose moving that section here on the same undue weight ground correctly argued by CommunityNotesContributor), and Haz does not have his own article yet. So other than having a little mention here, as suggested by CommunityNotesContributor, I think that is all we should do. I would wait some more time and more reliable sources coming out for a full article.

When was America great?[edit]

Eric Holder and others ask "When was it that America was great?", which is easily shot down by pointing out the bad things at any point in the past (slavery, jim crow, etc). But writers such as Fareed Zakaria have pointed out that MAGA does not really refer to any specific point in the past. Rather, MAGA is a reaction to the fast pace of change in general (ethnic, political, technological), and the alienation and resentment that many feel about this fast pace of change. As this article develops, I think it would be quite astute to incorporate this viewpoint of Zakaria and others into the article. --Westwind273 (talk) 16:04, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
