Useful Wikidata lists

Hello! As spin-off of an itwiki request on this talk, wikidata sysop ValterVB has prepared some lists of missing women article on enwiki from wikidata, that you can find here in local on User:ValterVB/Sandbox/Liste/DonnneNoEnWiki1. Would you like to add them on some general project page? We (he) can provide a better translation for the introduction. Every feedback for improvement is useful also for other languages!--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:08, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

Favor at FAC (grovel, grovel)

One thing that has concerned me about Featured Article Candidates is that what I see on women are mostly entertainment-based. There's nothing wrong with that, but this project is trying to broaden women's coverage beyond that scope. So far, I haven't gotten any articles about women in the sciences, technology, warfare (etc.) that would be that level. I've decided to go back over old articles I created on women and see what I can elevate to that level. So far, I only have one that I've had the resources to take it that far, which is Margaret Lea Houston. She was not a scientist or suffragist, and was "just a housewife", I guess you could say. But she bloomed where she was planted, and had a long-range effect. I think this stands a good chance of dying by neglect at FAC. Nobody is reviewing it, or commenting. I don't take it personally, as those editors I see over there are more interested in other subject areas. But is there anyone reading this who could add some comments/review to this nomination? I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. — Maile (talk) 22:27, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

I am really grateful for your care and thoughtfulness on this issue, Maile66 and I'm glad you have brought it forward for discussion. As I glance at the article page, what I notice when reading the first paragraph, is that I can't tell why she is notable except as the third wife of Mr. Houston. Perhaps you could move her notable accomplishments to the first paragraph, really highlight those; and that these are her accomplishments apart from being married to Mr. Houston. These are my thoughts for now. I'll try to look at the article in more depth soon and offer suggestions on the article talk page. With gratitude and best wishes, AD64 (talk) 23:03, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Well, yes, thanks. We'll see what you see there. But mostly, the opening paragraph would state who she was, and she was First Lady of the Republic of Texas. And the rest of the lead is a recap of the article. As far as WP:BIO she's notable by Wikipedia standards People are presumed notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple published[4] secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other,[5] and independent of the subject.. — Maile (talk) 23:15, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Here are some similar articles how lead paragraphs on wives of heads of state are written: Mamie Eisenhower, Abigail Adams. — Maile (talk) 23:25, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Yuri Kochiyama

Hi, folks. I see that Yuri Kochiyama was tagged as "C" class about a month ago. The article has undergone substantial improvement over the past week or two, since Kochiyama was the subject of a Google doodle, and you might want to have another look. If there are areas that still need improvement, it might be helpful at this point to add appropriate tags and/or make suggestions on the Talk page. (Or, of course, pitch in!) Less than 5% of Wikipedia Core biographies are biographies of women

FYI See Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Core biographies Ottawahitech (talk) 21:33, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

That's a long-abandoned decade-old rough draft, written as a vague jumping-off point in early days when the WMF was considering a print version of Wikipedia and was debating what would be included in it; don't take it as anything official. If you actually mean the auto-generated list, that's just a list of whatever pages happen to have been tagged "top importance" on their talkpage and has no relevance to anything, unless you really believe anyone thinks Walt Whitman is one of the 200 most important people of all recorded history. (FWIW, I don't see how one could write such a list without it being disproportionately male, given that by its nature it's going to include a lot of fields like politics, visual arts, engineering and the military which historically excluded women.) ‑ Iridescent 10:09, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
Totally agree with @Iridescent: on this. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:50, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Scope question...

I'm running into a banner tagging issue where the WP is being added to Sailor Pluto (a female anime/manga ensemble character from Sailor Moon, in case someone isn't aware) based solely on the fact that the WP "addresses fictional women." I'm pretty sure that this level of detail is not what was intended, as Artemis of Bana-Mighdall (also a fictional character, being one of the DC Amazons, and in fact in a whole cat of fictional female soldiers and women) isn't in this WP either. Can I get a scope clarification as to whether every fictional female with an article should be in this WP or not? Thanks! MSJapan (talk) 06:48, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

@MSJapan: Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women/Archive 7#Women in fiction, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women/Archive 7#Fictional characters and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women#Can you consider reining in the bot?. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:16, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
I'm honestly still not sure if we ever reached a conclusion. ~Mable (chat) 15:39, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
@Maplestrip: here's the personal opinion of the co-founder of this project... If a fictional character appears or self-identifies as a human woman, even partially (e.g. Deanna Troi, half human woman, half Betazoid female), include her. Sailor Pluto is depicted in human woman form, and one of her cats is Category:Fictional women scientists, so, include her. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:42, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Err, alright. That would expand the scope of the project hugely, though. I really wish there was a subproject for this... ~Mable (chat) 17:06, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification! MSJapan (talk) 17:10, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Maybe a Task Force for Fictional Women if there's enough interest? m:Wikimedia Sverige did a series of editathons in 2014 or 2015 on fictional women and got a great turn-out for the events, and created great content as part of their diversity efforts. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:18, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
I'd definitely have interest in joining such a taskforce (for what it's worth), though when it was brought up in one of the conversations linked above, there didn't seem to be much interest at all. ~Mable (chat) 17:35, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

On the more general question of scope: why can't this project have a section in their project page, Wikipedia:WikiProject Women#Scope, where its scope is clearly delineated? -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 05:19, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

@Michael Bednarek: This project used to have a Scope section. A search revealed: this edit Ottawahitech (talk) 21:46, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Er, that's not an edit, it's a revision. The edit which produced that is here and the next edit is here. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:36, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for locating that edit. Still, that wording doesn't explain the criteria for inclusion or exclusion of bannering articles for this project. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 07:52, 8 June 2016 (UTC)
Well, let's work on that. Does someone want to get a draft started? --Rosiestep (talk) 13:52, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Suzanne Guité

I didn't see a place to list requested articles, so I thought I'd do it here. Suzanne Guité (1927-1981) seems like a notable sculptor and artist that should have a Wikipedia article. Oxford Univ. Press has an article about her in Benezit Dictionary of Artists. Abstract: Canadian, 20th century, female. Born in Quebec. Sculptor. Suzanne Guite studied at the Bauhaus in Chicago with Moholy-Nagy, then with Archipenko in 1949, and received advice from Brancusi. She spent time in Florence in 1951, before moving on to Mexico, where she created frescoes. Her sculptures are generally human figures made in wood or stone, and are intended to express their inner spirit. A small book was published about her work, Boulanger, Rolland (1973). La Sculpture de Suzanne Guité. Aquila. ISBN 0885100093., which included a brief biography. There is an article about her Mauger, Louise (1981). "Suzanne Guite: 1927-1981". Gaspésie (in French). 19 (2): 10., as well as Suzanne Guité, la force tranquille - Histoires oubliées, "Le Chafaud présente Suzanne Guité", "Suzanne Guité" from Indépendantes Quebec and others. The Musée de la Gaspésie did a retrospective in 1992, publishing the catalogue as Hommage à Suzanne Guité ISBN 2920539108. All are in French. She has entries in North American Women Artists of the Twentieth Century and Art and Architecture in Canada: A Bibliography and Guide to the Literature to 1981. The Espace culturel Suzanne-Guité in her hometown of Percé, Québec, was named in her honor, as well as a street in New Richmond, Quebec. Parents: Guité, Alfred (1909 - ?) and Boudreau, Brigitte (1912 - ?). In English see "A Tree Rooted in a Stark Pure Land: Suzanne Guité In Memoriam" (1982). --Bejnar (talk) 20:58, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Who gets the banner?

Should the {{WikiProject Women}} banner be added to all biographies of women, or only those which aren't covered by other projects such as {{WikiProject Women artists}}? I genuinely don't know: I added both banners to Talk:Hadieh_Shafie as instructed at the WiR project and the "Women" one was removed by another editor, which seems reasonable, on the same basis as not including parent categories ... but I don't know. What's the policy, please? I see discussion above about bots adding the template inappropriately, but no simple definition of which articles are within the remit of this project and should thus have the banner, either within the talk page or the main project page. @Johnsoniensis: as the other editor involved. We await a response from this project. Thanks. PamD 16:44, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

I have assumed up till now that a WP Women banner is unnecessary on articles which already have WP Women's sports, WP Women writers, WP Women artists or WP Jewish women.--Johnsoniensis (talk) 17:11, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
There have been many discussions about this, I assume it's in archives but Johnsoniensis is correct. Consensus has been that if there is another banner related to women, i.e. the above plus WP Women's History, WP Women scientists, etc., it is not necessary but some women's banner needs to appear for notification purposes on all articles about women or their works. SusunW (talk) 17:16, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
A few weeks ago I did this, and something similar to the doc pages of the six linked from there. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:46, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
@SusunW: Just to play devil's advocate: the more WikiProjcts an article belongs to the more people are aware of its existence and the more editors who will participate in deletion disussions, DYK/GA/FA drives. etc. Ottawahitech (talk) 22:56, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
Ottawahitech I hear you and am in favor of including all applicable banners, but others say it is too much clutter. As long as there is at least one of the groups under women, we should be notified. But, I have seen lots of AfDs done where the women's groups were not. SusunW (talk) 23:11, 17 May 2016 (UTC)
@Johnsoniensis: Here’s one problem of not tagging articles with WikiProject Women.
Take for example (there are tons more):
Friday Morning Club which should be tagged as a women’s-related article. But it is not, even though it is a member of a category which is tagged under the WikiProject Women’s history.
In my opinion articles that are not tagged with the appropriate WikiProject are more likely to be deleted because fewer editors are aware of their existence. Ottawahitech (talk) 22:40, 11 June 2016 (UTC)please ping me
There are two issues with your example: 1) It isn't tagged by the Woman's History project either, so it doesn't meet the requirements of the question at all. The question is whether something that is already tagged by a subproject like Woman's History should also be tagged as part of the primary project. 2) The article look perfectly fine. It's not an amazing article or anything, but could easily reach C-class if edited a bit further and doesn't seem in any danger of deletion. How would this be an example of an article likely to be deleted because it is not part of the main project?
I'm not saying that your arguments are invalid, mind you. The danger of something flying under the radar because its subproject (be it Woman's History or Woman's Sports) is too small is a real issue. I just don't understand what your example adds to the conversation. ~Mable (chat) 10:08, 12 June 2016 (UTC)
@Maplestrip:
1) Yes it is true the article in question has not been tagged by wp:WikiProject Women’s history, but it should have been. If you look at the talk page of Category:Women's club buildings you will see that this category has been tagged, which implies that all Women’s club buildings should also be tagged.
2)Just because an article is currently rated C-class means nothing. It could be sabotaged and turned into a stub, or it could become a topic of public interest and be used for illustration on the main page. Ottawahitech (talk) 15:34, 16 June 2016 (UTC)please ping me
I'm just saying and didn't get the point of the example. Hey, from your response, I would assume you primarily just want it to become part of the Women's History project. That doesn't even have anything to do with what is being discussed here, does it? ~Mable (chat) 15:40, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Good articles

I've started Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Women in Green, dedicated to improving Good Article listings of women on wikipedia which is just 2.06% at the moment. Looking for feedback on a tool on Visual Editor to add open license text from other sources

Hi all

I'm designing a tool for Visual Editor to make it easy for people to add open license text from other sources, there are a huge number of open license sources compatible with Wikipedia including around 9000 journals. I can see a very large opportunity to easily create a high volume of good quality articles quickly. I have done a small project with open license text from UNESCO as a proof of concept, any thoughts, feedback or endorsements (on the Meta page) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure where to request an article

I think it's a pity that the linguist Jennifer Jenkins doesn't have an article. (The link goes to a different person whose last name isn't Jenkins and who seems to be famous only for marrying a rock star.) I did not add it as Jenifer Jenkins (linguist) because I wasn't sure if she was this British scientist or not: [1], [2], Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Social science. Access to college library resources for improving articles about women

Hi WikiProject Women,

Just a heads up that Hunter College would like to help with the improvement of biographies of women on Wikipedia by giving an experienced Wikipedian remote access to its college library resources (databases, ebooks, etc.).

The arrangement is through the Wikipedia Visiting Scholars program, which connects educational institutions and Wikipedians to improve public knowledge in a topic area of mutual interest. The page for the Hunter College position is Wikipedia:Visiting Scholars/Participating institutions/Hunter College and the application is a Google Form here. Names of authors in footnotes.

Hello. Here's a question for members of this WikiProject. Sometimes when I find a third-party reference that I want to use for a footnote in a Wikipedia article, the reference is by a woman with a non-hyphenated three-part name, and I'm not sure which part of her name she considers to be her last name -- the third part, or the second and third parts together. I'm therefore not sure how to cite her in the footnote. For example, suppose I found a third-party reference by someone named "Mary Smith Jones". Should I write the footnote to attribute the citation to "Jones, Mary Smith"? Or to "Smith Jones, Mary"? (I believe the first would most often be correct, but sometimes it's the second that's correct, for example "Mosely Braun, Carol" -- but if she's not someone famous, I won't be able to determine which.) Is there a standard for how to to this? Thanks. Mudwater (Talk) 04:10, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

It depends upon why she has three names. If it's an unhyphenated double-barrel surname, as with Helena Bonham Carter, this would be "Bonham Carter, Helena"; if it's because she has added her husband's surname to her unmarried name (instead of replacing the surname), as with Hillary Rodham Clinton, this would be "Clinton, Hillary Rodham". --Redrose64 (talk) 08:42, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thanks, that makes sense. But sometimes -- especially for references written by less-well-known women -- I won't know which situation applies, so I'll have to make an assumption one way or the other. I was wondering if there's an existing guideline for that. Mudwater (Talk) 12:11, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
There are also ethnic customs, for example Julia Sanchez Gomez's surname is Sanchez. I don't think there is a rule, I've looked and not found women's naming customs to be a topic on WP guidelines at all. It also doesn't appear to be standardized anywhere; I say that because I see variances even at World Cat and VIAF. English language standard is that the final name is the surname. It can always be corrected if one finds out differently. SusunW (talk) 14:09, 13 August 2016 (UTC)
That makes sense to me. Thanks. Mudwater (Talk) 15:12, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

The second biggest female YouTuber in the world (Pop and TV stars aren't primarily YouTubers like Jenna Marbles) has no article, probably because, at least in part, Wikipedians tend to be male and she's basically only of interest to females.

Is there anyone in WikiProject Women interested in giving Yuya (YouTuber) the article her massive success and fame has earned? Chrisrus (talk) 13:11, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

I think the language of the majority of the sources is a bigger issue, though there are definitely sources out there. I have no idea which of these are reliable, but if anyone is interested in picking this project up, I'm sure they can figure that out :) ~Mable (chat) 13:50, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

In fairness, throughout the Olympics Jason Kenny has consistently been described every time he's mentioned as "fiance of Laura Trott". Gymnasts--Final Five

The 2016 Women's gymnastics team (Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, and Madison Kocian) all saw a lot of activity during the Olympics and will probably continue to be viewed a lot while they tour this fall. All of these pages need clean-up, particularly citations as a lot of information was added during the Olympics. I'm leaving this note here because I think these pages have good potential for improvement and appear to attract a good level of interest. If anyone is interested in collaborating, feel free to leave a message here, on the article talk pages, or on my talk page. Knope7 (talk) 17:08, 27 August 2016 (UTC)

Complaint from email

ticket:2016091810000171 references "spoonerism" saying, "As a woman, I find it distressing that whoever wrote the definitions and examples of spoonerisms on the Wikipedia website was too "polite?" to use the words "fuck" and "poo." But had no problem using the word "cunt.""

I thought someone here might like to address the issue. Seeing the ticket linked above requires WP:OTRS access - sorry, but the relevant part of the email is here. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:15, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Assuming this is a reference to Cupid Stunt, I'd consider that a perfectly valid example, since (at least in Britain) it's probably the single best-known example of intentional spoonerism, to the extent that Kenny Everett's official biography was actually called Cupid Stunts. I know "cultural differences in language" is something of a cliche on Wikipedia, but it sometimes needs to be repeated that the word 'cunt' has nowhere near the impact in British English that it does in the US. (The Kenny Everett Television Show was a daytime family programme on BBC1, not some kind of daring late-night envelope-pushing exercise on an obscure cable channel.) ‑ Iridescent 15:29, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Early evening, perhaps; but not before 19:00. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:01, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Yeah—by "daytime" I mean "when the kids were still watching" rather than literally "the sun is still up"; eight p.m. on Thursdays after Top of the Pops during his BBC days (which was when Cupid Stunt was active), I believe. ‑ Iridescent 17:24, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
I think the 'popular use' section of the article is an unsourced mess, but I agree that Cupid Stunt is probably one of the better examples listed. The example will remain uncomfortable for as long as the article is in its current state, but I don't think it would be the first one to remove. Question, though: does the article shy away from using common curse words like 'fuck' where it probably shouldn't? ~Mable (chat) 20:17, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
We could, no doubt, find plenty of examples of the phrase, "nucking futs" or something similar. Montanabw(talk) 22:25, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Beauty pageant notability RfC -- reup

Hi, reupping the notice about the beauty pageant notability RfC as discussion there has a bit of momentum (I've put forward a proposal for closure) but we could really use broader community input, whether to reach quorum, oppose or propose alternatives. I mention it here because it affects a large number of WP bios of women.

In brief this came up because of a large number of (rather contentious) AfDs that turned on this issue, especially whether subnational pageant wins conferred notability to bios. Currently the question being discussed is whether to try to make a special notability guideline to address this (the contents of that guideline would be decided in a separate RfC).

Discussion starts here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Beauty_Pageants#RFC_on_creation_of_consensus_standard and here's the proposal for closure from me (the only one so far but of course all welcome to propose alternatives): Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Beauty_Pageants#Proposal_for_closure

Thanks for having a look. Innisfree987 (talk) 16:24, 21 September 2016 (UTC)

Help tagging Category:Women physicians

Very few women physicians are included in this wikiproject. See: Category:Women physicians and subcategories. Ottawahitech (talk) 14:43, 22 September 2016 (UTC)please ping me

Since no one responded I have started tagging article talk-pages manually. In my opinion it is important to tag articles because those that are not tagged are not included in Article Alerts , and do not come to the attention of the project if they are nominated for deletion. article stubs

I cam here hoping to talk the participants of this project into improving/organizing ways to handle the 20,838 article wp:stubs of this wikiproject. But I see that the basics, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women#Alerts still need a lot of work which must put a tremendous burden on active members here. Hello! There is definitely interest in destubbing articles about women. I'm not sure exactly what you have in mind. Have you ventured over to Women in Red? There is an event being planned focused on women writers. I've also destubbed some articles about women as part of The 10,000 Challenge, which is one of a few geographically focused projects to improve articles. You might find some editors in those projects/events have similar goals. Knope7 (talk) 02:18, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

I've created a page for deletion sorting of women. This is useful for tracking AfD discussions because many articles of women, particularly newly created articles and articles created by new users, may not be tagged with this WikiProject. In fact, I am somewhat surprised that this hasn't already been created. SSTflyer 12:16, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

Wow. In an hour I have already sorted 64 AfD discussions for articles about women, compared to 30 on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Article alerts. Just shows that the status quo ante misses many articles. SSTflyer 12:53, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi there, is anyone able to help out with Rose Hartman, an article on a New York fashion photographer created by a new editor? I declined a speedy yesterday and have done some work on the article, but it is far from my area of expertise and the speedier has now taken it to AfD. Thanks, Espresso Addict (talk) 16:18, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

Can you find refs and save Sofia Okunevska?

Unreferenced stub about " the first Ukrainian female doctor", sadly I cannot see any refs. Maybe they are in Ukrainian, or maybe the name is mispelled. As it stands it won't survive a proposed deletion, which I'd slap - but AGF I hope this is not a hoax but salvageable good content. The picture used in the article comes from [3]. Can you help? PS. Inline cites would be nice, we need to verify the claim and that she passes WP:GNG, too. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:41, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

Piotrus I found two references. I don't speak Ukrainian, but running them both through Google translate and Bing translate, the claim checks out. One was a cite from the Ukrainian article. The other was a find of a search with the Ukrainian spelling of her married name. Not sure if the translation of the name is correct. I always get Okunevsky no matter what translator I use. Might need a native speaker to clarify. (on the magazine, I found a ref that says: Women Doctor : Scientific publications for practitioners / version of "Doctor Women." - K. [BV]. - It turns out every two months. Code storage Vernadsky National Library: ZH25997) Thus, it appears to meet our RS qualifications. SusunW (talk) 05:45, 1 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, the entry in another Encylopedia is certainly sufficient. The difference between y and a is masculinine vs feminine surname endings in Slavic languages; blame the Google Translate for using male version by default (collective sigh from everyone now, please). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:17, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

I want to write about women rights and clothing

With focus on opression from forms of underclothing like corsets and bras and such. I started a draft at User:Jenny Min/sandbox. Is this discussed on Wikipedia under another title? Can you recommend any sources? --Jenny Min (talk) 05:43, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

Jenny Min Does this Tightlacing poorly sourced article help you at all? SusunW (talk) 06:42, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

The above question comes from my students (they are ESL Korean speakers). Unfortunately I am not familiar with relevant literature, but I have to say I am surprised that I wasn't able to find out anything on Wikipedia about the intersection of women's rights and clothing/fashion. I think this group of my students would like to write an overview article on the topic, but we are struggling to find relevant literature and properly name the article, which is why I encouraged them to post here. Any assistance would be appreciated! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 09:52, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

I suppose the title for such an article could become apparent as you examine and compare sources on the subject. I hope it'll work out ^_^; ~Mable (chat) 10:55, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

There's another whole area about wearing trousers in western cultures where a skirt or dress was the norm - see Bloomers_(clothing)#Women.27s_rights - and that has continued until very recently with work dress-codes forbidding trousers until very recently in many workplaces (and probably still in some). The battle to allow library assistants to wear trousers in a university library I know of was in the early 1970s, although these women spent a lot of time shelving books on high and low shelves when trousers were much more practical than skirts. PamD 11:57, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Oh and please don't forget the ever-present hosiery issue. If you ever lived in the southern US or the tropics and were forced to wear those as part of a dress code, regardless of health issues, you totally get that it was not remotely about helping women. [4], [5] SusunW (talk) 14:36, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
There's the present-day Spanx underclothing option for those who want to appear thinner, and the class might also be interested in c:Category:Bicycle dresses dating to the late 19th century. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:28, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
Piotrus Sizing is also an issue. Not just from promoting unrealistic body image stereotypes, but a law was actually passed in Argentina because no stores stocked clothes that fit "the average-sized woman" (apparently if you were plus-sized you were doomed to nudity?). [6], [7], [8], [9]. Then there is the whole burkini ban controversy and similar issues with modesty clothing. As for titles, Sexism of clothing?, Clothing as a Social Control? [10], [11], [12] Ping me if you want more. SusunW (talk) 15:58, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

BBC Editathon tomorrow

Just letting everyone know that BBC has scheduled a 12-hour edit-a-thon for "#100Womenwiki" tomorrow, 8 December, 0800-2000 GMT. Be nice and don't bite the newcomers. Also, a word of warning: BBC doesn't seem to have included anything about Wikipedia's policies in their news story. They basically said "Here's how to create a profile and create an article. Go crazy." Nothing about notability or reliable sources or anything like that. Gestrid (talk) 21:32, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Also, since the edit-a-thon-ers are being instructed to put the hashtag "#100Womenwiki" in their edit summaries a tool from Wikimedia Labs may be useful for tracking whenever that hashtag is used. See: http://tools.wmflabs.org/hashtags/search/100womenwiki?lang=en

Removed the template and verified that person data in WikiData showed him as male. SusunW (talk) 22:55, 7 December 2016 (UTC)
As someone who regularly adds women to Women Categories I thought it would be interesting to check the revision history of Aubrey Haynie. The first thing I saw was an addition of Category:American country singers to the article in June 2015 by an IP. The addition of the Tag WP:WOMEN followed a few months later by a different editor. I would speculate that what happened was that the second editor, faced with an ambiguous name, simply relied on the category. btw @SusunW: thanks for mentioning WikiData, this is something that would not have occured to me. Can anyone add few sentences to Gertrud David?

As written, this stub fails at WP:N. But I hope we could save it with one-two referenced sentences showing her importance? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:08, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

I cannot believe that this has stood since 2012 with no documentation, no text other than "Gertrud David (1872–1936) was a German journalist, film producer, director, and screenwriter." My mind is whirling that there have been so many edits on it and no one has even bothered to write anything meaningful or document it. I do not speak German, nor do I know anything at all about film, so did the best I could with translators and sourcing. I do not feel confident in discussing her films as I don't understand what the terms are in English, much less translated. Hopefully someone who speaks German can improve it, or someone who understands film. SusunW (talk) 16:14, 2 December 2016 (UTC)
@SusunW: You did wonders with Gertrud David, but I worry that there are not enough clones of you around wikipedia to improve all the articles that need this sort of dedication. I get discouraged every once in a while when I see that most of the energy around here is spent on deletion processes rather than improvement of existing content. (end of today's rant). Ottawahitech (talk) 16:26, 10 December 2016 (UTC)please ping me
Thanks Ottawahitech. I too find it frustrating that rather than try to improve articles, they just get nominated for deletion. I think we do not focus enough on how to develop sourcing. What RS actually are in a WP definition. SusunW (talk) 16:32, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
