I think that the sentence reading

"I, or someone I represent, is the subject of an article in Wikipedia and I would like to submit a photo of him or her to use in that article." should be reworded.

When I first read it, I thought it had a grammatical error, and I am not absolutely positive it doesn't even after looking at it again.
May I suggest it be changed to

"I, or someone I represent, am the subject of an article in Wikipedia and I would like to submit a photo of him or her to use in that article."

I am pretty sure that "I", not "someone", is the main subject of the sentence; if it is, the verb should agree with the subject. I included the immediate attention tag because this is a very high-visibility page. Sorry if that wasn't warrented. I'm not that knowledgable about proper procedure for something like this.

Uploading an image...

I’ve seen so many articles about images in tutorials, but I just don’t see the related information about uploading an image from a home user computer. There should be a button like that will appear a dialogue box and then to input the picture, sort of thing. And by the way, I plan to write articles related history based on the reference books I have. I wish to upload an image from the book via my computer, the image is a portrait of a man fought in the war and later died in 1943 during WW2. It’s from the book that was published in 2004, so I’m not sure what I should do like explaining the picture’s information. As an amateur wikipedian, this web site doesn’t seem to be the user-friendly type. Navigations tend to get lost, hence working on editing becomes tedious. mr_xmlv 17:19, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

School Dates

I just wanted to query David Cameron's school dates. Its seems that he passed his O levels in summer 1983 (as normal) and then it appears he passed his A levels one year later (or seems to be implied) as he took a gap 9 months from autumn 1984. International Ch

The statement that a dog can be designated an International CH just because it has CH in several countries is not technically correct. She had one child Helen Smith McReynolds, a graduate of Ohio State University and who was married to my father Arnold L. McReynolds for about 35 years. My name is Claudia F. McReynolds - Mercer. I did have some of her records but they were not playable. Miss Brown as I called, her had a radio show on wtam or wgar in Cleveland, Ohio. Correcting the Football Association of Greenland page

You have stated on the Football Association of Greenland page that they are hosting the 2010 FIFI World Cup, this is incorrect. It should be the the 2010 FIFI Wild Cup, not World Cup. I would have made the change myself, but there is not an edit button for that section of the page. Please make the necessary correction. Thank you.

Instructions need to be changed

All caps and style

This is minor, but I disagree with the use of "YES." instead of simply "Yes." in the answer to "Am I supposed to be able to edit your encyclopedia?" I understand that Wikipedia's position on this is emphatic, but putting it in bold is enough. USING ALL CAPS IS THE WRITTEN EQUIVALENT OF YELLING. USE OF ALL CAPS, ITALICS AND BOLD TOGETHER IS REALLY JUST EXCESSIVE and not compatible with good style. help on image in my article Besiyata Dishmaya

hi,

i'm new here and would like to ask for help.

I have uploaded an image to English Wikipedia from the Hebrew Wikipedia. Under the Hebrew Wikipedd the licence is GFDL - GNU Free Documentation License.

someone put a warrning under this image that it is going to be deleted within i think 7 days or so, unless more information is provided.

I don't understand what kind of information is needed since i have provided the link which i have taken it from and it's free to copy or else?

i just tried to guess about it and added the - GFDL - in the image - is that what they wanted? the hebrew message of the image says you must put "wikipedia Hebrew

With regard to the John Madden (American Football) topic, it's stated that he was born in 1936 and graduated from high school in 1957. This would be a relatively old age to be attending high school and he would have been too old to be on his high school football team - at least in some states. Christopher Walken Wiki

There seems to be an error in a few dates regarding his wife. In the data on the left, you have her as born in 1969, however, in the bottom of the wiki it says that's when they were married. Obviously, not a big deal, but just wanted to have that clarified.

Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone can edit pages. You don't need to apply or get special permission to join us. At the top of each page is an "edit" label. There have been twenty-seven different versions of the U.S. Flag, with the first definitely NOT being one with thirteen stars in a circle. suggesting that other editors read a certain (.gif image) "Talk:" page ?

Sorry if this is not the right place for this question. I edited Image_talk:Typicalaldol2.gif and now I am wondering, if there is some way (maybe even, a convenient way) that I could convey [send] a polite message to (say) some of the recent editors of the Aldol_reaction article, to suggest that they read the question that is now at Image_talk:Typicalaldol2.gif. This "might" be mostly a question about WP:Wikipedia etiquette, but I also am kinda ignorant about sending e-mail messages on WP, other than, unless it is by means of editing someone's "Talk:(username)" page. Also, I am kinda wondering whether maybe there is (and if not, then if perhaps there "should" be, in the future?) some way to automate the sending of such messages, to multiple persons, e.g., to multiple recent editors of a given article. "private enterprise"

What exactly should this sentence say: "Though Wikipedia is a free service without advertisement, it is a private enterprise and is privately funded."? Last time I checked, we were a tax-exempt foundation and more specifically a public charity, as opposed to a private, grant-distributing charity which gains its money from investments. Furthermore, we are definiteiy not "private funded" but gain our money from public donations. Please correct! --Mbimmler (talk) 08:33, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Not done: "Private" means we are not associated with any governmental organization. It is funded by donations from private individuals, and not from any government sources. So, in that sense, we are not a public charity.--Aervanath lives in the Orphanage 18:21, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

I came to this page from OTRS to check in an e-mail. I am utterly baffled on where to go from here. I highly recommend a link called "File ORTS e-mail" be placed somewhere on this page. What do you mean "check in an e-mail"?   1. The link for asking factual questions points to Wikipedia:Questions which covers questions in general, it would be better to go straight to the Wikipedia:Reference desk with the current wording, maybe possibly add 'for any other questions see Wikipedia:Questions' line?
I think that's an appropriate place to go given the current wording. Not bad so far. I've re-arranged the page: "report a problem" is now right up top, with press stuff and business development further down. The big red text is now fleshed out a little further, borrowing from the text elsewhere. Inappropriate

I have removed a section referencing legal or other threats that people might send to us. I don't find the sentence appropriate on the "official" contact page. However true it may be, it just doesn't belong here in my opinion. Lets remember that many many people see this page (in fact, it was ranked 366 in the month of June with 230,914 views). Helpdesk

Lets look what the Italian government did when google showed a video that bullies a down syndrome Italian. They accused google. Later, the internet also showed hate marks to the premier and they decided to black out internet sites. Read this ..... "The government briefly studied plans to black out Internet hate sites after fan pages emerged praising an attack on the premier, but the idea was dropped after executives from Facebook, Google and Microsoft agreed to a shared code of conduct rather than legislation"

In the Wikipedia there are a lot of hate sites.These hate sites hate people and they are still accessible to the general public but could no longer be edited as preserved records. But the insults are still there and they are damaging. I think Facebook, Google and Microsoft will have to block these sites or else anyone can also sue the Wikipedia as well as them...just like what the governments are now doing..This will give anyone the freedom to accuse Wikipedia... Wikipedia owes a lot of future monies to those that Wikipedia insulted- I mean his irresponsible staffers. But we also have to thank Wikipedia for preserving these records so who ever started the insults will be gravely punished for conducting a major criminal offense.

Wording issue

On Wikipedia:Contact us/Article problem/Poorly written, the first bullet under "Don't feel competent? No Time?" (beginning "Usually, a simple Internet search will provide you with information written by experts on almost any topic") sounds like an invitation for someone to copy and paste a well-written article from the internet into the Wikipedia article. I would fix it myself, but I'm not sure what the statement's original intent is; if it means to say that the concerned person should use the citations to fix the article him/herself, it shouldn't be under "Don't feel competent?" at all. School Vouchers

I can see a problem with switching to school vouchers that was not discussed. As with almost any business that is profit driven, once the original concept catches on and it becomes more the norm than the exception and competition from public schools becomes near non-existent, I can feasibly see a system that increases profits by reducing costs and services. I think we can project reasonably well that private school costs will sky-rocket once they have beaten down the competition. We could accomplish the same end result by giving the voucher money to the board of education and telling them to keep the change left over from what it costs them to educate a student. In all probability it will evolve to a system where some or even most classes are taught by interactive Internet Streaming video. A student would not even be required to come to school and would instead be home schooled in this manner. The appeal for this approach would be reduction in travel time for the students, reducing the size of the school bus fleet, and savings in fuel, maintenance, and drivers. There would be less possibility for children to become involved in school bus accidents, no need to stand at a school bus stop in the freezing early morning hours before the sun even comes up, and less possibility for predators to target students. This approach would prevent unruly students from interrupting classes allowing other students to maximize their educations. There would be an additional advantage of not requiring metal detectors and armed guards that some of our public schools now require and a higher certainty that such a school will be immune from assault by terrorists or school shooters. But in contrast to this, any time a child is not required to be in front of a video monitor, they are usually at home and unsupervised. We would most likely see many more children running the streets during this period of time without parental knowledge or approval. There is strong reason to believe that these children would be much more vulnerable to predators both in their homes and out on the streets. Where there are other siblings also being taught in this manner there will often be competition for the best computer in the house or the best accommodations as far as desk and chair. There is no guarantee that a television or iPod would not be competing for the students interests and time. There would be a need to isolate siblings that often requires more room than many homes have available. Internet service would be required as well as multiple working computers so each child in a home has their own computer. Initial setup and operation of these computers will often be beyond the student's ability to contend with. Any router or computer reset would mean lost instruction during this time unless the instruction was recorded but then this takes away from the interactive concept of this type of teaching.

Should we be so inclined to support such suggestions from private sector schools then we could just as easily continue to operate on a non-voucher system using the same approaches. Ralph1000 (talk) 00:17, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes, but if the maze didn't exist, many more people would e-mail about issues that could be resolved by providing self-help information in the maze, or which the volunteer response team cannot help. The volume of e-mail might increase too. Most of the posts to this page are blatant advertising, blatant nonsense, non-English, or complaining about article content (which the volunteer response team cannot resolve anyway). The remainder are comments that belong on another talk page. Barely any are requests that should have been e-mailed. My main suggestion is that WP:OTRS should lead to a page that has a list of the queues with email addresses. I wouldn't dare put something like "Please contact WP:OTRS to confirm whatever" on a new user's page considering the current state of affairs. If I knew that page was an actual helpful page instead of some kind of smoke screen designed to confuse new users into failing to find the email addresses, then I could do that kind of thing. It's difficult when it's all full protected. The normal editing process of finding consensus can't work. From a usability standpoint, I think we need to work to eliminate potential loops that lead people around in circles. If we want to make it wizard style then we need to stick to that, and provide people a clear branching path to where they want to go. Right now it's way too easy to be lead down rabbit holes to nowhere, or worse, back to where you started. Wikileaks

Should we mention on the contact us page that Wikipedia is not affiliated with Wikileaks ? Some people seem to think that is the case and are vehement at expressing their disapproval, there are complaints on noticeboards, at OTRS... Cenarium (talk) 15:42, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Possibly, but most of those are focussed on editing/using Wikipedia, and I'm not sure whether it qualifies as a frequently asked question in that context. David Berger (theologian)

For the second time User:Lectonar speeddeleted a good article with references over German catholic theologian and professor David Berger. Berger wrote as author several books and in his last book "Heiliger Schein" he wrote, that 20 to 40 percentage of catholic clergy is gay. Mobile pages

I recently found a defaced wiki page when using my iPhone. I went to a computer to fix it but found it was not defaced there. The mobile version at en.m.wikipedia.org was clearly different from the standard version at en.wikipedia.org. However, the contacts page has no mention of mobile pages or how they get created or what kind of time delay there is between the two. It would be helpful to outline that process so we know how to fix mobile pages and/or what to expect in terms of time-to-correction. {{edit protected}}

The page in question was http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki?search=United+States+presidential+election%2C+1896 on 2010 Dec 18 13:45 EST. It has now been a couple of hours without changing.

Cultural partnerships

I was wondering whether it would be possible to add a section in here for "cultural organisations" a.k.a. GLAMs to contact us if they want to undertake some form of partnerships. We have recently set up glam@wikimedia.org as a OTRS queue for this purpose. Of course, if an archive or museum or whatever knows their local chapter or local wikipedia community then that's fine, but if they want to contact us and don't know anyone already it would be good to have it listed here IMHO. Otherwise, the only thing we are offering to cultural organisations is for them to complain about copyright violations. I would suggest to place it in the section with business proposals. Dear Sir/Madam, I remember as a teenager going to Benjamin Franklin Jr. High School in Norwalk, Ct. during the years of 1953 - 1955.

Benjamin Franklin school was located on Flax Hill Ave. It is now the Chrystal Theater. We often took a shortcut through what was then an open field (we called it Fighting Hill) many of the disagreements we had with our peers were settled there. Now it is built up with many houses and lots. If we looked south from (Fighting Hill) we could see the Norwalk Harbor. On one side of that hilly field was a big boulder with a cannonball half imbedded into the boulder. An inscription on that boulder saying that it was a state of Conn. Historical Site and that the cannonball was shot there by a British warship during the Revolutionary war. I think it even mentioned the name of the ship. I believe that the reason it was half imbedded into the rock was that it was heated red hot and then shot at the houses and must have missed and imbedded itself in the rock. Recently, I've walked by the property and haven't seen either the rock with the inscription or the cannonball. I'm wondering if anyone has any record of that rock or cannonball. I would appreciate it if someone would let me know if there is any information on that. Are you sure you can add a size parameter when a frame is employed? I've never been able to get that to work. --Bsherr (talk) 03:10, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
Why? It will achieve nothing useful, and as it's 400x the file size, will make the page load slower. This svg seems to be a very poor conversion of the image. There are >1600 paths in it (view in in wordpad), each shape should just be one path - describe the shape and fill - it looks like each shape is made up of hundreds of small shapes.  Ronhjones  (Talk) 00:03, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
