Welcome to the January 2014 edition of the Bugle!
The project's most prestigious award, the "Military historian of the Year" (MHOTY), has been voted on and awarded. The accolade is given to the editor who is judged by their peers to have made the most significant impact on the subject of military history on Wikipedia. In an Australian sweep, AustralianRupert won the Golden Wiki, while Ian Rose and Nick-D took equal second. The Bugle wishes to congratulate all the editors nominated for the award.
The "Military history newcomer of the year award", now in its second year, has also been voted upon, and awarded to Khanate General. The Bugle congratulates him and all the new editors nominated. Thanks also to The ed17 for distributing these and the MHOTY awards.
The Milhist FA, A-Class, GA and Peer Reviews for October–December 2013 have been tallied, and awards distributed. Dank easily topped the list with an amazing 56 reviews -- you can find everyone's name who contributed reviews at the link above, and we thank all of them for their efforts. Thanks also to AustralianRupert, Nikkimaria and Peacemaker67 for tallying, and Rupert for distributing awards.
Lastly, the February 2014 backlog reduction drive is coming! 2014 will be the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, a global conflict that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918, resulting in over 38 million combatant casualties and profoundly impacted upon the course of the 20th century. In an effort to focus the Military history WikiProject's attention on this event and improve our coverage of the conflict ahead of the anniversary, project members are invited to take part in a six-week campaign to reduce the backlog of World War I military history articles needing attention and military history articles with incomplete B-Class checklists. These articles have been flagged as needing particular types of improvement to achieve B-Class status; by reducing the backlog, the drive will simultaneously help the project achieve its 10% B-Class milestone target. The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 February 2014 and runs until 23:59 UTC on 15 March 2014.
Milestone for the fortifications task force |
In a major milestone, the Fortifications task force recently achieved its 100th good article.
As noted by task force regular Hchc2009, these articles cover a remarkably wide range of fortifications-related topics. Recent GAs include the intense Battle of Fort Eben-Emael in May 1940, the famous Edinburgh Castle and the rather less fearsome or well-known Cow Tower, Norwich. These and older GAs on topics such as Bunkers in Albania, Krak des Chevaliers and Fort Glanville Conservation Park illustrate the breadth of the task force's scope.

- Operation Majestic Titan participants: In recognition of the contributions made by Parsecboy, Cam, The_ed17, Dank, and Saberwyn to the creation of a 63-article featured topic for battlecruisers of the world, they are collectively recognised with a shared award of the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves, the first to be awarded to a group of editors.

- The contest department completed its 79th round of competition last month. A total of 60 articles were submitted by 11 editors. Sturmvogel 66 came first with 109 points from 16 entries to receive the Chevrons, followed by AustralianRupert and Ian Rose who each earned the Writer's Barnstar with 43 points from eight and five entries, respectively. Honorable mentions go to Tomobe03 (41 points), Lineagegeek (debuting with 32 points) and Parsecboy (31 points). Cuprum17, Djmaschek, Peacemaker67, Rskp and Zawed also fielded entries. Please submit any articles you are working on for this month's contest now.
