Editing/Constructing a Table ?[edit]

Can someone help me understand how the table (List of Sikh Gurus) on the Sikh Gurus page has been constructed, and how it can be edited ? I assume it is a table, and not some image ? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.231.196.185 (talk) 01:13, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • That list is actually a template. So to see the actual code of you would have to go here. The template is also semi-protected so only autoconfirmed, registered, editors can change it. In any case, Help:Table describes how tables are created using wikisyntax. You can use the button in the edit window (under the Advanced tab) or you can type it out manually. To type it out manually you would use the following:

{| class="wikitable"
|-
! These !! are !! headers
|-
| This || is || data
|-
| This || is || data
|-
|}

Would produce:

These are headers
This is data
This is data

If you edit Sikh gurus then you will see the code {{List of Sikh Gurus}} where the table is displayed. This code means the template at Template:List of Sikh Gurus is used. It's a coincidence (or at least not normal) that the template name is the same as the section name in the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:46, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Template:List of Sikh Gurus is semi-protected so it can only be edited by autoconfirmed users. Click the "View source" tab to see how to submit an edit request. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:49, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian English Edit Notice[edit]

Hey there, is there a way that I could add an edit notice to an article which is written in Canadian English and should stay that way? Please ping me in your response. —Skyllfully (talk | contribs) 06:07, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You asked the same question on 14 August - you can find the answer "it shouldn't be done" at Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2015 August 14#Wikipedia articles no titles.
Please don't re-ask the same question, hoping to get a different answer - Arjayay (talk) 09:03, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question regarding deleted article The Diamond Store[edit]

Is it possible to appeal the deletion of the article The Diamond Store? I am not sure why the article was deleted under code G11. I believe the article followed all guidelines, describing a notable UK business using independent references from reliable publications. If there's a way to appeal , would you let me know? Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoTDS (talkcontribs) 09:15, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@JoTDS:: You need to appeal to the deleting administrator FreeRangeFrog and as a last resort to WP:Deletion Review. G11 means that the page was written in an overly promotional, spammy fashion. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 09:22, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Amboxes not visible in Mobile View[edit]

Is it normal that some important content (e.g. amboxes) is not shown when reading a Wikipedia article in Mobile View?

See for instance "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Ambox":

I found this problem when contributing to an article, but I have seen it is a general issue in the Wikipedia. This happens in iPhone (Safari), Android (Chrome), and also in Windows when switching to Mobile View using either Internet Explorer or Chrome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Manuel.quijada.serrano (talkcontribs) 10:02, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I only know that maintenance tags are shown by tapping the "Page issues" on the top of the article. The Average Wikipedian (talk) 10:11, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

request for help[edit]

Sad to say, an editor has written on my previously non-existent User page. This is a pain for me, because previously my user name came up in red so that it was very easy for me to spot my edits on my watchlist. Now it isn't. If you please, is there a way to restore the previous happy situation? If so, please would you very kindly consider doing so?Chjoaygame (talk) 11:05, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think you could request a speedy deletion. I don't however understand why a red link helps you spot your edits. The Average Wikipedian (talk) 11:07, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your kind and quick response. A red link is very easy to spot in mostly black text. I will try requesting a speedy deletion.Chjoaygame (talk) 11:14, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Chjoaygame you can always tweak your signature settings under "Signature" at Special:Preferences with wikicode, so <span style="color:red">Chjoaygame</span> in your signature becomes Chjoaygame. It is also a distinct difference from the Wikipedia redlink color. Just be sure to check the "Treat the above as wiki markup" box. RegistryKey(RegEdit) 11:49, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure that helps, RegistryKey? I didn't think that the signature shows up in the watchlist. - David Biddulph (talk) 11:57, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oops you're right, forgot about the watchlist context. RegistryKey(RegEdit) 12:04, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Editor GB fan has kindly fixed things to the way I think I wish. Thank you.Chjoaygame (talk) 14:05, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Editing photo on page for Robert Dinwiddie (Golfer)[edit]

I have just uploaded a new updated photograph of Robert to his page, but am unable to centre the photograph in the box. Could you please inform me how I can make this adjustment.

The uploaded photograph is thumb|Open Qualifying, Woburn 2015 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bespoke Sports Ltd (talkcontribs) 11:25, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That'll be Robert Dinwiddie (golfer). Maproom (talk) 11:34, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've corrected it with this edit. I have also left a message on your user talk page regarding your username. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:35, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error included ref[edit]

wanted to add a citation. PLease advise on how... I was unsuccessful in changing {citation needed} into the correct link, as follows:

http://www.forbes.co.il/news/new.aspx?0r9VQ=EDMIE&Preview=1

(which was also added and appears in the list of articles) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.8.52.20 (talk) 12:31, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Citing sources for information about citations. Also if you create an account, you can use the RefTools gadget that helps immensely with creating correct citations. RegistryKey(RegEdit) 12:35, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In your version which flagged up the error, the error messahe was very specific: "Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page)." And if that isn't clear enough, the words "help page" were in blue, indicating that they are a wikilink, in this case to Help:Cite errors/Cite error included ref. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:06, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Title change/Page Move[edit]

Resolved

The article Long_interspersed_nuclear_element should include the abbreviation LINE in the title, since this is the most commonly used form. So the title should read "Long interspersed nuclear element (LINE)". Also, it would be great, if searching for "Long interspersed nucleotide element (LINE)" would also redirect to the same page, since this is another common interpretation of the abbreviation (see for example [1])

Thanks for your help with moving the article! Ilikelifesciences (talk) 13:20, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ilikelifesciences: We never give two titles in the page name such as abbreviation and full name. We always pick one. Other potential titles can redirect or go to a page which includes a link like LINE. I have redirected Long interspersed nucleotide element to Long interspersed nuclear element. There was an old redirect from Long interspersed nucleotide elements (with s at the end) to Retrotransposon#LINEs. I have changed that to also redirect to Long interspersed nuclear element. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:58, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks for clarifying about the title rule and for the redirect!Ilikelifesciences (talk) 14:06, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MIL-STD-2525 title has been changed[edit]

MIL-STD

MIL-STD-2525 has been changed from "Common Warfighting Symbology" to "Joint Military Symbology." The insertion of APP6 after the entry is incorrect and misleading as APP6 is the NATO version of the standard.

@Zwicksan: You seem to already be logged in. At any rate, if you weren't logged in, the top right hand corner would have a log in button. If you are logged in, the top right hand corner has some links to things like a page where people can leave you messages, a page where you can tell us about yourself, a page for experiments, notifications of messages left for you, etc. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:27, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
MIL-STD-2525 is a redirect to NATO Military Symbols for Land Based Systems. There is a paragraph at the end which talks about the relationship between MIL-STD-2525, 2525A, the upcoming 2525D and APP-6 and APP-6D including the fact that "NATO Join Military Symbology" has been the name since APP-6C. Not sure that this lines up with you expect, but it is dealt with in significant detail.Naraht (talk) 17:07, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas S. Monson article vandalism[edit]

Resolved

The Thomas S. Monson article shows "DEEZ NUTS IN YO FACE BITCH !!!!" at the beginning of the article. However, when I hit edit to remove the content, it does not show there. Any help in removing, as well as an explanation of what was done, would be appreciated. Thanks, Bahooka (talk) 17:50, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I was trying to find it, when it disappeared, with no one editing the article. I'd also like to know what was done. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:03, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The info box is a template so the data is not shown on the actual article page. It was removed on the template page. To see the revision that removed the data see [1]. --Stabila711 (talk) 18:07, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for fixing it and informing us of how it was done. Bahooka (talk) 18:15, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Bahooka: I didn't fix it but you're welcome for pointing you in the right direction. Whenever you see curly braces in an article (like this {{Latter Day Saint biography/Thomas S. Monson | format = Infobox Latter Day Saint biography}}) that means a template is being used. If you can't find the data you are looking for and you see that it means the data is stored on another page and is being imported. --Stabila711 (talk) 18:22, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That is an oddly functioning infobox. Most articles transclude the blank infobox and fill it out on the article page. It seems odd to create a filled out template and transclude that. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:18, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • @ONUnicorn: I have found that there are many oddities on Wikipedia. Sometimes you just have to roll with them. --Stabila711 (talk) 18:22, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This is very true. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:25, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@ONUnicorn and Stabila711: What if the odditues go against the guidelines and aren't an improvement on Wikipedia's current methods? The way that template - and the other 157 - work goes against WP:SUB Disallowed Uses No.3 " Using subpages for permanent content that is meant to be part of the encyclopedia ", it confuses the hell out of new users, as this request for help shows. - X201 (talk) 18:39, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not only new users, but established ones too. That said, ARTEST4ECHO seems to have engaged in a discussion here that sheds some light on why it's like that. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:41, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • @X201: WP:SOFIXIT. Also, a template page is not a subpage. A subpage would be Thomas S. Monson/template. So technically it isn't breaking that "rule." You are more than welcome to fix it though and then request the template page be deleted. --Stabila711 (talk) 18:46, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The page concerned is a subpage; it's at Template:Latter Day Saint biography/Thomas S. Monson. It's a subpage in template namespace, and the only apparent permitted use for subpages in template namespace (according to WP:SUB) is for Wikipedia:Template documentation. - David Biddulph (talk) 19:10, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No these subpages effect multiplie pages at the same them so then do not violate WP:SUB. They are used so that the same information will be updated everywhere at the same time. For example, changes made to Template:Latter Day Saint biography/Thomas S. Monson updates List of members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (LDS Church), Thomas S. Monson and Council on the Disposition of the Tithes. WI admit three pages may not seem like alot, but these template are also used on a number of other pages, like Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and many more. These template all us to keep hundred of pages in order with having to vist each and every one to make changes when something comes up, which they do all the time.--- ARTEST4ECHO(Talk) 19:30, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If they're templates that are used on multiple articles then they need to be individual ones and not sub-pages. - X201 (talk) 19:39, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That makes no since to me. Your feeding the multiple uses of Template:Latter Day Saint biography and the "Formats" that it call out for. Without of Template:Latter Day Saint biography , Template:Latter Day Saint biography/Thomas S. Monson would do nothing. This is no different then how Wikipedia:WikiProject Latter Day Saint movement/Temples works and those templates effect probably 5000 pages. Do you really want to go and change 5 to 10 thousand pages just so they don’t us a “/” in the title?--- ARTEST4ECHO(Talk) 19:57, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
