In The News

@USchick: For another time, you should have clicked edit at the "August 11" heading at WP:ITN/C#August 11. You must have clicked "show" (if your browser displays that) and then clicked edit at "August 11, 2014 (Monday)" which is transcluded from Portal:Current events/2014 August 11. Quotes from foreign languages

How do we embed quotes from a foreign languages into the articles? How does it look like with translations? Any examples? SkywalkerPL (talk) 09:45, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

WP:NONENG offers some basic guidelines. You'd probably want something like: "Gott würfelt nicht" (God does not play Dice), A. Einstein. Sometimes people place the parenthetical inside the quotes: "Gott würfelt nicht (God does not play Dice)", A. Einstein. My prefered style guide (the Chicago Manual of Style) recommends square brackets instead of parenthesis: "Gott würfelt nicht" [God does not play Dice], A. Einstein. We have Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Foreign-language quotations but it is not especially prescriptive on how to do this. You might want to look at some Featured Article examples such as Georg Cantor#Cantor's ancestry and Niels Bohr#Later years SpinningSpark 15:26, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Repost the article "Rotaract Club of Cairo Royal"

Dear Sir/Madam,

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Bassem EL Sawy and i'm a member and a past vice president of a Rotaract Club named Rotaract Club of Cairo Royal which is a part of the Rotary International Organization. I wrote and edited an article on wikipedia with the following URL Rotaract Club of Cairo Royal

The article was removed by one of your volunteering editors, i tried to know why through his page and his reason was (A7: Article about a group or club, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject (CSDH)

Using wikipedia as a method of publication or informing people about our organization or work is the reason why we wrote the article at the first place and keeping the Rotary International and Rotaract International pages acknowledges that there is nothing wrong of us adding a page for our club.

I request adding the article back to wikipedia as i tried the talk tab to resolve this issue with the editor and i never got a reply back on the issue.

First of all, since you are connected with the subject of the article you have a conflict of interest. You should read our conflict of interest guidelines. Basically, you should not directly edit articles with which you have a conflict of interest, but you can make suggestions. There is also the Articles for Creation process. Secondly you should read our notability guideline which explains how Wikipedia defines and establishes notability. How to create a Category?

Deaspite long searches, I can't find how one creates or proposes the creation of a Category. Is it my stupidity or is the information well concealed? --Clifford Mill (talk) 11:16, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

There is rather too much information at Help:Category. In short, you can add, for example, [[Category:Example]] with other categories near the bottom of an article. That is technically all that is required, but the category will show as a red link. Clicking the red link will go to the category page which you can create. Technically, all that's needed is brief text like "This is for examples". However, a lot of stuff is normally added and the simplest is to find a similar category and copy what it does. Having said all that, creating categories should require quite a lot of thought, and occur after a lot of reading starting at the above help page. Johnuniq (talk) 11:48, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Please keep in mind that the new category itself must be included in at least one "parent" category, orphan categories are useless and subject to prompt deletion. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:18, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

That's right, and the parent category is the bare minimum that needs to be on the page. Frequently, that's all there is, there is usually no need for an explanation of what the category is about. Maybe if there is a main article for the category that will be there as well, but that's all. See Portal:Contents#Category system to find the top of the category tree and work down to where a new category might belong. SpinningSpark 15:53, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Curriculum Vitae

I wish to create an article that is the Curriculum Vitae of Roger Jenkins the prolific theatre and TV Director. I have five references relating to Roger's work. The CV takes the form of a brief profile, his education details and a listing of the circa 200 theatre and TV productions that he directed. Roger is alive and wishes me to enter this article.

I agree. Indeed it is so unintelligible that it will not be easy to convert it into good English. I suspect it was translated from th:กษัตรีองค์มี, so maybe someone who can translate from Thai can help. Maproom (talk) 16:26, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

The next evolution.

Diderot started the original encyclopedia, and others helped start Wikipedia. What will be the next evolution? Could it come from the Brainy Bunch? How does one classify art from graffiti? What is the difference between "enlightened work" from non-sense? Are results the only outcome to measure? What if an i-phone became the new telephone linked to a cable in one of those red telephone booths in England? Would that public marketplace make it qualify as a new library of the information age? Does encyclopedic information have to all come from one source to be considered consistent with the past definitions of pedia materials? Does a person's feet have to touch the ground while sitting in the chair in a college classroom to be considered a student? To be of student age in Africa used to mean a small child had to be able to put their arm over their head and if they could touch the opposite ear with it they were old enough to go to school. Was this fair? Have we as a society now redefined what it means to be pedia information? Is it right to come from only one source? Ethical?? A reasonable approach??? Mostly they seem like reference desk questions rather than VP. Even there, a lot of them require speculative answers, which the ref desk is not supposed to do—but probably will. SpinningSpark 21:17, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Babel-link template

I recently saw documentation for a template with the following features:

• You use it to provide a link to a foreign-language Wikipedia article when there's no article here
• You can specify the title of the other language's article as well as a link here
• It automatically detects whether someone's created an article here under this title
• If someone creates an article with this title, it automatically stops displaying the foreign link and instead displays the English link

I can't remember the title of the template or where I found it. Any suggestions? Nyttend (talk) 23:18, 11 August 2014 (UTC)
