Newsvalue

I'm not sure if Newsvalue (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) was soft blokced by you due to their username or they were hard-blocked for creating spam article, so can you please take a look at this user Dascalicut143 who just recreated Draft:Sudheer ambalappad. Thank you. GSS (talk|c|em) 11:15, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

@GSS: Waaay ahead of you, buddy. Yunshui  11:18, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
There we go. Sock confirmed by CU (no sleepers), blocked and tagged. Yunshui  11:22, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
😀 Perfect! and thank you for your quick response. Another request can you please take care of this user ILLUMIER2908 too. As per his keen interest in Sachiin J. Joshi, he seems to have a coi issue and he was advised to use the article talk page, but I see no result of the warnings. Thank you once again. GSS (talk|c|em) 11:33, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
There's no hard-and-fast evidence of a COI that I can immediately see (aside from the edits, obviously, which are kind of a giveaway), but it's clear that he's only here to whitewash the article on Joshi, so I've blocked as a spam-only account. Yunshui  11:39, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
Ah, I thought it sounded familar - check OTRS#2018082010005632; pretty sure it's the same guy (in which case UPE is applicable as well). Yunshui  11:43, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
Definitely the same guy and in this case, you need to take care of user GavinMarkwick as well. GSS (talk|c|em) 12:12, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Hmmm... not so sure about him. Edits like this and this don't fit the same profile as ILLUMIER2908's. On the face of it, I think GavinMarkwick might just be an interested party, rather than a paid schill. Yunshui  13:04, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Bit of Google-fu suggests he's no fan of Joshi's, either. I think this one's a false positive. Yunshui  13:06, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
I was about to ask you to Google his username and agree he's no fan of Joshi per a couple of tweets. GSS (talk|c|em) 13:21, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

By the way, you may want to consider truncating your signature a bit... by my count, you're only five characters off the hard limit of 255 prescribed by WP:SIG, and all those emojis make it less likely that other users will take you seriously. Yunshui  09:21, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

HA HA! Ok i will remove the emoji's 😁. But i went through the new pages log and i found a draft with possible vandalism that takes wikipedia as a joke. here's the link- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Pune_Abbasi. Thanks! 😎😆 B. N .D 😆😎 | 📩💬TALK 💬📩 09:47, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Page deleted, editor warned. You can tag pages like that for speedy deletion, using the template {{db-vandal}}. Yunshui  09:57, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Dear Yunshui. I recently had this argument between user:Nording who created an article with insufficient information. So i moved it to draft space from main space. Please tell me what to do. This is the article Draft:Lisa Teige — Preceding unsigned comment added by B.N. Dehigaspage (talkcontribs) 14:06, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

I'd say that was somewhat bitey were it not for the fact that Nording is not in any way a newbie; they've been here for years - and so would be expected to know how to create an article. You moved the page less than three minutes after they created it, and a quick check on Google shows that Lisa Teige is clearly notable. The page simply needs expansion, which I'm sure Nording was in the process of doing prior to your rather abrupt move. In such cases, it is far better to discuss things with the article's creator, rather than act unilaterally. Yunshui  14:11, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
I see Writ Keeper has already moved it back before I could do so myself. Please don't do that again. Yunshui  14:13, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Oops! sorry. But isn't it wrong to move it to the mainspace without any information? B. N .D | TALK 14:14, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

It wasn't moved to mainspace, it was created in mainspace. There's absolutely nothing wrong with creating a short stub about a notable topic directly in mainspace with just one or two sources, and then expanding it (or even leaving it for others to expand). It's also worth mentioning that if you (as a non-admin) move a page out of mainspace, the page actually remains - it just exists as a redirect out of article space, which we then have to track down and delete. So please, don't do that. Yunshui  14:17, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

IM VERY VERY VERY sorry, but before that i did the same thing to another article. I'm sorry... please dont block me. I'll send the link to that article as well. Here it is! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:The_Fabulous_Truth im very sorry. I just didnt know B. N .D | TALK 14:25, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Everything Yunshui says is very true; page moves can be surprisingly difficult to undo (this one happened to be easy, but it's not always so). They're not a step to be taken lightly, and for the specific case of moving mainspace articles to draft space, there's policy to back it up at WP:DRAFTIFY, which says that only people who have the New Page Reviewer right should perform such unilateral moves. Otherwise, the better course of action is to open an Articles for Deletion discussion, which can have "move to draft space" as well as deletion as an outcome. Honestly, if you come across an article that you don't think should be in mainspace and you're not sure of what to do with it, AfD is the right call 9 times out of 10 (after discussion with the author, at least).
I can't speak for Yunshui as far as blocking goes, but I think you're fine. Occasional mistakes are okay as long as on learns from them. Now you know. :) Writ Keeper  14:31, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

The QueenXi matter

Hello, my friend. The first caps seems like such an obvious connection to me. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:07, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

I would agree on behavioural evidence, but CU suggests they are different - QueenXi lives quite a long way away from DE, and uses a different ISP entirely. I suspect off-wiki canvassing... Yunshui  11:29, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Understood. Thank you. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 11:36, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Something was going on, but perhaps it will stop now that the sock's have been blocked. Maybe add {{Not a ballot}} to the top of the AfD?
Anyway, even if there was no connection between DilmaEmperatriz and the other two accounts and even if the article is kept, User talk:Galobtter#Carmen Maria Montiel needs to be clarified per WP:COI. If DilmaEmperatriz is just a fan of pagents and not Montiel like is seemingly being claimed here, then he/she needs to stop impersonating Montiel. I think this is something which needs to be clarified asap. If DilmaEmperatriz is unwilling to clarify his/her posts, then maybe a WP:SOFTBLOCK is needed per WP:IMPERSONATE. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:50, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

Copy editing suspect Comment

Hello yunshui. I came up with a suspect article with symptoms of copy pasting. the Draft:FICE International is a big article which was created between minutes on the same day (view history). I think it is copy pasting ¬¬¬¬ — Preceding unsigned comment added by B.N. Dehigaspage (talkcontribs) 11:52, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Looks like most of it was copied or closely paraphrased from the organisation's own website; I've deleted it. {{db-copyvio}} is the tag you should use in such circumstances. Yunshui  07:58, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Elon Musk protection

Would you mind if I downgraded to ECP now, with the idea of downgrading to semi in a few days? It doesn't seem like there are going to be extendedconfirmed sleepers jumping in here. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 02:06, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Was coming here to suggest the same thing. There were one or two silly edits from EC users but overall the disruption would be mainly stopped by ECP Galobtter (pingó mió) 08:19, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
No need to ask; feel free to downgrade it as you wish. ECP sounds like a good stopgap measure (I always forget about that option; we never had it back when I got the bit...) Yunshui  19:16, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
Switched it down to ECP this morning. Yunshui  07:19, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
Looks like the magnet related nonsense has stopped, could you lower the protection to semi? Thanks. Galobtter (pingó mió) 17:32, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
Done. Fingers crossed for a cessation of the "magnet" crap. Yunshui  08:10, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

Another possible SOCK

Hi Yunshui. I think Mcseladana might be a sock of Vkdutta4u (see WP:AN#Vaibhav Global for more specific reasons why). New account shows up and the first edit is the start a draft for an already existing article created by a sock of a indef'd editor. It might be a coincidence, but there seems to be a connection. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:10, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

CU's not going to turn up much, since all the other accounts were blocked ages ago - I'd agree that it looks a bit dodgy; suggest you open an SPI. Yunshui  08:01, 26 September 2018 (UTC)
Understand and thank you for taking a look. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:08, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Re: FICE International draft article

Dear Yunshui,

I see that you deleted my 1st article(FICE International) and I can understand why. You have left me a message, saying that I cannot use copyrighted materials(to which I completely agree). Although, I would like to say that the article was completely written by myself. It might sound like I paraphrased the information from the organization's website, but it was completely written in my own words and based on many sources other than the website of the organization, which I was going to add at a later point. I just wanted to state this and that I am going to continue working on this article. I would appreciate any guidance from your side, for which I thank you in advance.

Best regards, Katerina Steliyanova Ivanova 13:31, 27 September 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katerina Steliyanova Ivanova (talkcontribs)

The Wikipedia community discourages articles created by those close to a topic, because of the conflict of interest this creates. It is therefore not advisable for you to continue creating the article, copyright issues notwithstanding. You have also failed to make the appropriate disclosure of your paid editing status, as required by WP:PAID - the {{UserboxCOI}} template is not sufficient for this purpose. Yunshui  13:51, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

Possible multiple accounts

Hi Yunshui. Would you mind checking Rkranndhir and Jena Amiya Kumar because I think they might be the same person? Both accounts keep starting Teahouse threads about User:Jena Amiya Kumar/sandbox/SIKHARESWAR JENA and the style of writing is pretty much identical. FWIW, I and others offered some suggestions in previous Teahouse threads, but for some reason he/she seems to feel that my personal stamp of approval is needed. I think this is probably a new editor who’s just not familiar with WP:MULTIPLE among other things; so, if there’s a connection, then maybe a warning from an admin will put him/her back on track. — Marchjuly (talk) 13:29, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Good spot. CU-confirmed socking, blocks applied. Yunshui  08:05, 25 September 2018 (UTC)
Just a heads up in case you didn't notice, but both accounts have posted an unblocked request, which are basically identical and making the same claim of using a shared network/IP. It could possibly be the case I guess, but I have no way of knowing for sure. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:17, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks should be available for testing in October on the Test Wikipedia and the Beta-Cluster. This new feature allows admins to block users from editing specific pages and in the near-future, namespaces and uploading files. You can expect more updates and an invitation to help with testing once it is available.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team is currently looking for input on how to measure the effectiveness of blocks. This is in particular related to how they will measure the success of the aforementioned partial blocks.
  • Because of a data centre test, you will be able to read but not edit the Wikimedia projects for up to an hour on 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has, by motion, amended the procedure on functionary inactivity.
  • The community consultation for 2018 CheckUser and Oversight appointments has concluded. Appointments will be made by October 11.
  • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.
  • Nominations for the 2018 Arbitration Committee Electoral Commission are being accepted until 12 October. These are the editors who help run the ArbCom election smoothly. If you are interested in volunteering for this role, please consider nominating yourself.

Hey Yunshui! I'm back for today, and i found this user who had created another account (sock puppetry) on the wiki and has inappopriate things on his user page. Can you sort it out. B. N .D | 15:15, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

You're going to need to be a tiny bit more specific... Yunshui  15:18, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

I'm not seeing anything inappropriate in either their edits or their userpage, and nothing to suggest that they are a sockpuppet of another user. Sure you spelled that right? Yunshui  15:22, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

You don't need a qualification to create a bot, although you'll need to get it authorised by the Bot Approval Group before you can do anything with it. Instructions on how to do it are available here. Yunshui  15:30, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

Fine Artist Chelsea Smith

Hello Yunshui,

Thank you for providing me with your input in regards to fine artist Chelsea Smith's Wikipedia page. I provided reliable sources, which are links to her articles, awards, website, seller pages, etc. I mirrored the page criteria after artist Jasmine Becket-Griffith. Her Wikipedia page doesn't have reliable sources listed per se. Below you will find Jasmine Becket-Griffith's Wikipedia page link. Please advise.

Draft Problem. Suggestion

I recently patrolled the RC list and found this draft article- Draft:Disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi which did not meet any guidelines of wikipedia. It was created in good faith, however, i think declining it would best right now, because he may have to write the whole thing again, and could not because it takes months to review. Thanks B. N .D | 06:44, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

We don't need a draft when we already have an article... it's already been deleted. Yunshui  08:39, 15 October 2018 (UTC)

Deletion

Hi, Yunshui.

Aside from the "banned user" who apparently uploaded the content, I can find no other reason in the Wikipedia standards for deleting the page. Everything was thoroughly documented, it is not a promotional page, and there are no copyright issues. Why would an otherwise legitimate page be deleted just because it was posted by a banned user?

Also, the new page had different content than the one that was deleted last year after a community discussion.

Please advise.

Many thanks.

Taylor — Preceding unsigned comment added by Taylor Henry (talkcontribs) 15:05, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

@Taylor Henry: Being created by a blocked or banned user in violation of a block or ban is a valid reason for deletion in and of itself. It looks very much as though you have a conflict of interest with regards to this article, and that you are abusing multiple accounts: what is your relationship to the accounts User:Fairseasons, User:Patricktaylorhenry and User:PTHHenry? aikido

Jamie tenor

apologies in my opinion the way of unifying energy better describes aikido than uniting forces even though this is the literal translation in the article it says that unifying is a possible translation of Ai and energy is a possible translation of Ki, i thought that it would help readers to understand the nature of aikido and its name better i was not attempting to correct or undermine any other text in the article i am unfamiliar with Wikipedia so could you possibly suggest an alternative sentence that can be added that conveys this meaning? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamie tenor (talkcontribs) 13:47, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

India national football team

Hi Yunshui. Would you mind keeping a watch on India national football team for a bit. I don't think it needs page protection at the moment, but there are some IPs trying to improperly add a non-free image to the main infobox. The file was previously removed per FFD, but occasionally it gets re-added every now and then. This time, however, it appears that it might be the same person (even possibly one of the regular editors of the article) IP hopping to try and re-add it. FWIW, I have no problem with the editors (editor) following WP:CLOSECHALLENGE and trying to establish a new consensus, but the brute force approach for re-adding is not really helpful. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:44, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

That's true, but it's a block underneath an account, so I want to find out which account it is first. There may well be a very good reason that there's an underlying block. Yunshui  13:49, 29 October 2018 (UTC)

It seemed clear, four days on, that the user wasn't going to reply to your request so an IP request was in order. I agree that I could have pinged you and, on reflection, perhaps should have done, and asked you to send the request. However, that did seem rather bureaucratic. Nonetheless, I have taken note of your sentiments and I'll pass the ball back to you next time. HTH. Just Chilling (talk) 22:37, 31 October 2018 (UTC)

I know i had wrong grammar and all for the last few years, but i learned. I read wikipedias whole policies and guidelines... not all of them, theres way too much.... but i read most of it and i now understand. Please try and give me a chance... just one more time. Because i cant wait till im older... I just cant. Thats why i didnt create or edit much articles with my new user... because i was afraid of what i would cause... try and take what i said into your mind and please consider taking me back. 😉 2402:4000:2182:54B9:CD1A:5D5B:3669:AD94 (talk) 17:17, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

  • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
  • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
  • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

  • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
  • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

ARBCOM?

Hi Yunshui, ArbCom needs you again! Would you please consider running this year? The deadline for nominations is a few days from now, and there are only three people running to fill six seats (and only one of those people is an admin). Please please please consider serving again; it would be much appreciated. Thank you. Softlavender (talk) 11:14, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

I wouldn't worry; there's usually a sudden influx of candidates in the last couple of days of the election, so it's more than likely that a decent crop of editors will put themselves forward. I am unlikely to be one of them; apart from anything else I've been paying very little attention to ArbCom over the last year so I have no idea what's been going on recently. If no-one else has put their hand up by Tuesday I might be persuaded to throw my hat in the ring, but right now I'm very happy keeping it on my head. Yunshui  12:24, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
OK cheers, Yunshui; hats off to you. Softlavender (talk) 12:30, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
I see what you did there... Yunshui  13:36, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
(+1)--One of the most sane voices in the wiki; you will be a nice addition and I do hope that you are persuaded to take a dip:-)WBGconverse 14:41, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
  • By the way, Yunshui, you can catch up on what happened with Arbcom this year in less than five minutes, at the summary link I'm providing. They tried only five cases, and most of them were small potatoes: WP:Arbitration/Index/Cases/2018#December. -- Softlavender (talk) 14:50, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
There's a bit more behind the scenes too, but if you're interested in that, you know where to find me :) WormTT(talk) 14:52, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
I know, you all talked about Drmies behind his back didn't you? Silly gossips. Softlavender (talk) 15:03, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
No need, happy to gossip about Drmies to his face :D WormTT(talk) 15:15, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Undelete/userfy a page?

Hey, would you mind taking a look at this? I just messaged User:Dekimasu about it, but after saving noticed no one else had messaged them for a while and they seem to be only occasionally active (no edits this month, only 30 edits since August), and for such a simple request I'd rather not wait a week or more for a response. Hijiri 88 (やや) 23:46, 11 November 2018 (UTC)

Hmmm... as far as I can tell, the page you created was a straightforward redirect to the title Hayashi Fusao (which at the time was where the article was located). It doesn't look as though you actually created any content. Could be I'm not digging deep enough... Yunshui  23:53, 11 November 2018 (UTC)
Ah, okay. I guess the tool thinks I created the article because I created the first page at the existing title. That ... seems like a really stupid bug, but exactly the kind I'd expect. I figured something weird was up since even non-admins can move over simple redirects. Hijiri 88 (やや) 00:36, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Yunshui. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Refdesk abuse

Hi Yunshui! I notice that you blocked annoying IPs vandalizing the refdesk, thanks.[1] I also note that the edits have been removed (suppressed, I guess, since I can't even see them anymore, which I can do with usual revdel edits). If you are responsible for this, I have just one minor remark; all these edits were then signed by sinebot, which repeated the message in their edit summary as well; those edits were not suppressed or revdel'ed, keeping everything visible. I have revdeled these[2]. Perhaps they need suppression as well. In any case, just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for the block and removal, and to give a minor heads-up that sometimes only removing / suppressing these isn't sufficient. Fram (talk) 14:04, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Fram. I thought I'd got the intervening edits, including SineBot's, but since the vandalsim happened over several pages it's entirely possible that I missed a few. I'll go back over the histories and make sure there's nothing left. Much obliged! Yunshui  14:06, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
No problem! Fram (talk) 14:11, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Teal Swan page

If my content was completely wrong (especially the infobox which was certainly subjective, as well as the biography), then I understand your perspective. I will no longer change the page. However, I am confused as to why the content initially published is right, for it is in the same way based on the blogs written by others, but it only relates to the controversy made around her, the only thing wikipedia accepts apparently, especially the blog entry: The Gucci Guru: Inside Teal Swan's Posh Cult (it is equally an invalid reference). Therefore, why should my content have been completely dismissed? Thank you in advance. Connectingtosource (talk) 11:49, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

We probably should review the existing sources, but adding further bad sources just exacerbates the problem. I'll do a review of the sources currently in the article this afternoon, and see whether any of them can be improved upon or replaced. Yunshui  11:52, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
On review, it appears that her notability stems almost entirely from Gizmodo's Gateway series, which was heavily focused on the controversies around her work. As such, Wikipedia - which reflects what has been written in sources, rather than editorialising - will naturally give attention to these controversies, since that is virtually all that third-party sources have written about her. If there are reliable independent sources which verify that, for example, her son has extrasensory abilities, or that she sees energy rather than matter, we could make those claims in Wikipedia's voice; as it is, however, we cannot. Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

Miscellaneous

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Can you understand/Speak Japanese? --Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 03:39, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Not really, no. I studied it for about a year many moons ago, but lack of practice has left my rusty, to say the least. These days the only Japanese I can reliably recite is martial arts-related; I can define an "outer turning wrist reversal throw" fairly easily, but I can't ask the way to the shops anymore...
