Context

Hello dear sir/madam , I am parwiz ahmadi, a wikipedia user.

I had posted a article (din mohammad jurat) which I think I fault in use of a copyright context.

I am sorry for it , I just have a sincerely demand, Can I have that text again. Unfortunately I didn't Save it any where.

I want to edit that article text and Post it again.

with regards Parwiz ahmadi (talk) 16:29, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

No. It was a copyright violation and cannot be restored. The speedy deletion notice on your talk page provides the URL where you copied it from. -- Whpq (talk) 17:58, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Emergency request

Hello dear sir @Whpq

I am Parwiz ahmadi , I love to be an Editor of Wikipedia its very interesting for me to write articles here.

as you are aware , Few days ago , I wrote an article by the name of (Din mohammad jurat) but unfortunately it was copyright . I was not aware about copyright restriction here. but now I corrected that Text and Posted it again.

I hope you can review and suggest me further improvements in case of need.

Thank you for your cooperation. Parwiz ahmadi (talk) 13:50, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Reviewing your edits is not an emergency. -- Whpq (talk) 14:34, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Non-free use assessment

Hi Whpq. What do you think about the non-free use of File:HMS Prince of Wales Bell Replica.jpg and File:Hood Bell Unveiling.jpg? The first file is being used in HMS Prince of Wales (53)#Replica bell for successor and HMS Prince of Wales (R09)#Replica bell from predecessor, while the second file is being used in HMS Hood#Expeditions to retrieve ship's bell. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:43, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

The stated purpose looks rather weak with respect to WP:NFCC#8 with the purpose pretty much being a restatement of the content of the photo. I don't think they are justified. -- Whpq (talk) 12:57, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
I share that opinion. Would you feel the "violation" is clear-cut to prod the files or nominate them for speedy deletion, or would it be better to discuss them at FFD? -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:58, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
The event they illustrate is mentioned in the article so perhaps FFD would be the better choice. -- Whpq (talk) 01:54, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the input. Will bring them up for discussion at FFD. What do you think about File:Cover of The Book of Tempeh 2nd ed.jpg being used in William Shurtleff#The Book of Miso. Seems a bit of a stretch per WP:NFC#cite_note-3. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:11, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
Unless I missed it, there is no discussion of the art style of the cover which is the stated purpose in the NFUR. -- Whpq (talk) 12:23, 10 March 2023 (UTC)

I started FFDs for each of these files. Thanks you for the input. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:34, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Tshwane South TVET College

Please reload the page with the infringed parts removed. I do apologize not correctly quoting. Kachidza (talk) 20:07, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

I assume you are referring to Draft:Tshwane South TVET College. It is not a case of "not correctly quoting". You need to write the article in your own words. I will not be restoring and repairing that draft. You are welcome to start the draft again using your own words. If you wish to have a list of references used in the draft let me know and I will provide those to you. -- Whpq (talk) 20:29, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Subject: Regarding content for Wikipedia from my site ramanabalachandhran.com

To: <muthu@trigya.com>

Muthu,

I hereby authorize you to use any content (text, music audio/video, photos, etc.) from my website ramanabalachandhran.com for the Wikipedia page titled "Ramana Balachandhran". Do let me know if anything more is needed from my side. Thank you.

"no freedom of panorama in US"

Hi,

you reverted my image change back here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/1145064844 and mentioned "no freedom of panorama in US" - but if this is a problem, why would it apply to my image but not to the one you reverted back to? Their content is the same, mine just a better lighting and is clearer. If mine wouldn't be allowed because there is no freedom of panorama in the USA, why would the one you reverted back to be allowed?

Thanks in advance for an explanation. Deindlrp (talk) 20:15, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Your image was uploaded to Commons which only accepts freely licensed content. The other image was uploaded locally to the English Wikipedia with compliance to our non-free content criteria. You may upload your image here on the English Wikipedia as non-free content. Note that on Commons, you stated previous publication on a copyrighted site. You would need to provide proof that you are the copyright holder via WP:VRT, as the photo currently in use is freely licensed by the photographer but with a copyrighted statute and would be preferable over a copyrighted photo (per WP:FREER). A agree your photo is better, but as currently uploaded, cannot be used here. -- Whpq (talk) 22:51, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. I am the owner of the site the photo comes from and also the photographer who took it.
Will check out how to proof this. Deindlrp (talk) 23:09, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for details. -- Whpq (talk) 23:13, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the details. I send the Release E-Mail from the generator to the responsible team and put the Permission pending / subst:OP tags on the image page.
So I will wait until I get a reply and if its positive I will revert it back to my image. Deindlrp (talk) 10:42, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Regarding Ramana Balachandhran wiki page draft deletion

Dear Whpq, you recently deleted the draft for Ramana Balachandhran citing copyright infringement with ramanabalachandhran.com. I had taken permission from the site owner for the content. Kindly restore the draft. If there's a process by which I can communicate the permission (by email, etc.), do let me know. Muthukmr (talk) 04:32, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

What is your relationship to Ramana Balachandhran and why are they giving you authorisation? -- Whpq (talk) 10:09, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
We are music lovers and have been following his music for a long while. It's our initiative to create this page. We had approached the owner of ramanabalachandhran.com for information & proceeded to put this up based on the material available there. After the deletion we requested a written permission & have put it up here too. Muthukmr (talk) 10:53, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
You say "we". Not that Wikipedia accounts are for individuals and may not be shared. As for using the text, the copyright holder must provide permission. Pasting an email to my talk page is not sufficient. The copyright holder must release the text material under a free license following the steps at Donating Copyright Materials. Note that even if the text is released under a free license, it may be still be unacceptable for other reasons such as being promotional. -- Whpq (talk) 14:52, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
I have decided to rewrite the sections without referring to ramanabalachandhran.com to avoid any licensing issues. Will create a fresh page. 1.22.102.243 (talk) 04:51, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of the article - Culture of Bhuragaon

Thank you Whpq, for removing the speedy deletion banner from the article Culture of Bhuragaon. As the article was nothing to be removed. Thesaurabhsaha (talk) 13:38, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello Whpq. I was wondering why did you decline my deletion request on the reason that I'm not the sole significant contributor? Please check the revision history again and you will see that I was the only one who did significant contributions. WikiEditor1234567123 (talk) 20:20, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

There was significant disagreement about the content or veracity of the article from other editors, even if they are not reflected in the current version. Furthermore, the article was sent to AFD where a decision to draftify was the result so it would not be okay to unilaterally overrule the AFD result. You can just leave the draft and if nobody edits it for 6 months, it will get deleted as a stale draft. If you believe that deletion can't wait, then you can nominate it for deletion at WP:MFD. -- Whpq (talk) 13:04, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Deletion of article Derek Williams (musician)

Can you please reverse this? I cannot find any evidence of copyright infringement at https://encoremusicians.com/DerekWilliams as given out in the deletion notice. Chrisdevelop. 24 March 2023 1:02am AEST

No it will not be reversed. I reviewed the site's material with my own eyes and can attest to the fact that significant portions of the Wikipedia article had the exact same text as the encoremusicians.com site. The fact that the page for Derek Williams on the encoremusicians.com site has mysteriously been deleted in the short time between my deletion of the article and this appeal does not make it any less a copyright violation, and to be blunt, is very very suspicious despite the extensive declarations on your user page. -- Whpq (talk) 14:10, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
I was the original author of a draft article for Derek Williams, and gave up after much to-ing and fro-ing while the draft article had become unwieldy. Another editor took over the task several years later, and reused some of the material from my draft. After seeing your deletion of this new article, I contacted Derek Williams to let him know, and he must have deleted his account straight away. Even before he did this, I could not see that the encore site text had been copied and pasted, aside from the obvious facts of film and recording credits. Would it not have been better to nominate the article for speedy deletion than to delete it without consultation? Chrisdevelop. 24 March 2023 1:21am AEST
@Chrisdevelop: It was not just facts, but entire portions where essentially the text "Derek Williams" has been replaced with "I". I don't know who copied who. To me, the text read like a press release. In any event, to clear this up, you will need to have Derek Williams declare that the text from the encoremusicians site that he put up was copied form you. That would need to be done through WP:VRT. Otherwise, I, nor any other admin can be sure of the copyright status of the material. -- Whpq (talk) 14:43, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
@Whpq: Text is very often copied from Wikipedia, so I agree it can be hard to determine "who copied whom". Since the material has now disappeared, it's not possible to verify this was a verbatim copy/paste, but if it no longer exists, the alleged violation has surely disappeared along with it. I did provide Derek Williams with text from my earlier draft a long time ago, and it's possible he used that, and if there are any other sites where he has done so, then I guess he'll pull those down too, since it would be a shame for this article to be continually pulled down after all the effort that has gone into its creation. I looked at the WP:VRT page you provided, but can't see where Derek Williams is to make this declaration you're suggesting. If you still think it is necessary, can you please be specific as to the steps that need to be taken? Chrisdevelop. 24 March 2023 1:58am AEST
Derek Williams should send an email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org that states that they used the material from Derek Williams (musician) / Draft:Derek Williams (musician) to create the now deleted profile at https://encoremusicians.com/DerekWilliams. This would confirm that the material was copied form Wikipedia and not the other way around. -- Whpq (talk) 15:14, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
@Whpq: Thank you. I have passed this on. Chrisdevelop. 24 March 2023 2:30am AEST
@Whpq: I should also mention that the same thing happened in my original draft, now removed to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Chrisdevelop/sandbox under 'Submission declined on 9 April 2018 by Shadowowl (talk)', with the appended explanatory notes: "This submission has now been cleaned of the above-noted copyright violation and its history redacted by an administrator to remove the infringement. If re-submitted (and subsequent additions do not reintroduce copyright problems), the content may be assessed on other grounds," and "Symbol opinion vote.svg Comment: Note to reviewers : Copyvio check is false positive. Content was copied from Wikipedia, not the other way around. See [1] » Shadowowl | talk 14:56, 10 April 2018 (UTC)". Thus, my submission was cleaned of the Copyright Infringment on the identical grounds that the Discogs bio had been copied from Wikipedia about five years ago, not the other way around. Until your notice I had not been aware there was a duplicate at Encore. The same applies in this case. As you can see, the bio block for the currently deleted Wikipedia article was largely taken from my original draft now in Sandbox, and was eventually cleaned of excessive refs etc by another editor who took it over after I had removed it from Article Drafts. Chrisdevelop. 24 March 2023 13:20 (UTC+10)
Dear Whpq. Derek Williams told us in ticket:2023032310009784 that the mentioned text was copied from Wikipedia, and has now been removed from the mentioned site. I cannot see what was in the Wikipedia article, but I think it should be restored. Yours, --Krd 17:20, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you Krd! @Chrisdevelop: VRT has processed the ticket and I have restored the article. I apologize for the confusion on the source of the text. -- Whpq (talk) 17:27, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
@Whpq: That's great, thank you, Whpq, and thank you, Krd. Chrisdevelop. 25 March 2023 5:06am (UTC+10)

Florence Kenyon Hayden Rector

Hello. I see you declined my copyvio revdel at Florence Kenyon Hayden Rector. While I did not see the Copyright link, I'm not sure the link is CC BY after taking a look at the link. In the exceptions category: "blogs and exhibit work may belong to this category, and may be explicitly excluded from the CC BY license". The link is a From Woody's Couch blogpost, which is listed in the list of OHU blogs. As the blog itself does not have a CC BY license specifically stated, I'm not sure anymore. What is your opinion on this? Thanks! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:44, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

I missed that exceptions link. But after reading it, it states that some material is explicitly excluded. The source page carries the CC-BY 4.0 license at the bottom, and I can find no exclusion statement on this particular blog post. When I click on the Woody's Couch link at the top, I get to here which also has a CC-BY at the bottom with no exclusion statement. Clicking on the about leads to a page again with a CC-BY and no exclusion statement. Given that the exception links wording, it seems everything is CC-By 4.0 unless otherwise explicitly stated. So I think this qualifies as CC-BY material. -- Whpq (talk) 19:56, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Hmm. That indeed is confusing. I'll have to think it over. Thank you for looking into this. MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:15, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Copyrighted images

Thank you for deleting several copyrighted images. I would suspect that some images within these collages have also been borrowed:

Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:24, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Yes, they are likely also copyrighted images used in the collage. I've tagged it as derivative work without specifying the sources, so it will be deleted in 7 days if nothing is done to provide proper sourcing. -- Whpq (talk) 20:42, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! Magnolia677 (talk) 20:52, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

The Zahra Trust

Dear editor: I previously created a page under the name of "The Zahra Trust" and it had been deleted because it is considered as an advertisement. I beg your pardon to retrieve it to fix it according to the criteria of Wikipedia. Thanking in advance for your efforts Hassan Al-Jarrah (talk) 06:44, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

I have placed it at User:Hassan Al-Jarrah/Zahra Trust. You will need to address the tone of the article or it is liable to be deleted again as advertising. I suggest you submit this through Articles for Creation rather than directly publishing it to article space. -- Whpq (talk) 13:15, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

Draft:St. Thomas Church Arunapuram

Dear Sir,

You were declined the article that I wrote about "Draft:St. Thomas Church Arunapuram"

I was unaware about the policy, sorry for the inconvenience. But I am the one who created the Page and Group in Facebook with the same photos. I don't know the way, how to give the details.

So, I hope I can recreate the page with the same name with another photos which I have. @Whpq: Mathew pulickal (talk) 08:24, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

With regards to the text of the article, you have a note on your talk page titled "Wikipedia and copyright". The bullet point "If you own the copyright to the source..." provides the information about what you need to do for the article text. As for the images, those were uploaded at Commons, and you will need to communicate with the deleting administrator there. -- Whpq (talk) 13:18, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

File:Pauline Hanson's One Nation logo.svg

Hi Whpq. Hope you're doing well. Any opinions on the licensing of File:Pauline Hanson's One Nation logo.svg? If it's OK as licensed, then File:One Nation WA logo.jpeg and File:One Nation Victoria logo.png most likely don't need to be licensed as non-free since they're essentially the same logo with only some minor differences. What about File:One Nation NSW logo.webp? This is similar to the other logos, but the yellow background seems to include some embedded imagery that might be enough to make it non-free. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:10, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

I would say the logo is appropriately licensed, and as you point out, the other two should be relicensed to match as free. The NSW logo's background imagery looks like a an orange-tinged, tilted, and zoomed-in version of the foreground. It looks like it is mostly the letter "n", so I do not think the background imagery makes this creative enough. -- Whpq (talk) 12:33, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for looking at these. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:32, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

File:Ajay Kumar Kushwaha Bibhutipur.jpg

Hi Whpq. Is File:Ajay Kumar Kushwaha Bibhutipur.jpg the same non-free file you were discussing at User talk:Admantine123/Archive 4#Replaceable fair use File:Ajay Kumar Kushwaha Bibhutipur.jpg? If it is, then I'm wondering about it's licensing since it doesn't appear to reflect what was being discussed on that user's user talk page. FWIW, I only noticed that after finding a few more non-free files with F7 issues uploaded by the same user, plus one file with Indian FOP issues. Marchjuly (talk) 08:25, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

I uploaded images of Member of Bihar Legislative Assembly from the official website of Government of Bihar. Their copyright policy allows anyone to use it for any purpose without any cost. It can be found here.[3]. The images from here can be uploaded with Attribution only licence, as i found after discussion on Commons with an autopateoller. Admantine123 (talk) 09:18, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
@Admantine123: Did you upload File:Ajay Kumar Kushwaha Bibhutipur.jpg to Commons? The uploader of that file has a different account name. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:15, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Meanwhile, i also got to know that Freedom of panaroma is allowed only for statue and 3-D objects and not the 2-D objects like Posters on commons. Tell me what additional criteria are there to upload the public posters, which are categorised as derivative works.Admantine123 (talk) 09:25, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
@Admantine123: I will post what typically needs to be done in cases like this on your user talk page. We can continue the discussion there. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:15, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
No, they are not the same image. -- Whpq (talk) 11:07, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you Whpq for checking. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:15, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

The Lanman Museum

You have just deleted a draft page subject "The Lanman Museum", citing that this infringed copyright. No it didn't. The material was drawn from https://lanmanmuseum.uk/home/our-history, as you say, but with permission. Please reinstate the article, and I can then add a note that copyright has been obtained.

Failing that, please tell me where I can access the content you have deleted. It took me a while to create that, as I am not familiar with wikipedia creation, and please don't make me do it all again.

Simon Garrett. Simongarrett (talk) 21:46, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

The Lanman Museum

PS - if you thought - wrongly in this case - that my draft was in breach of copyright, why didn't you ask me, rather than just deleting it? That was not helpful to me, and very frustrating for a new user acting in good faith. I'm really hoping you can point me to where my text is now, so I don't have to recreate it from scratch. Simongarrett (talk) 21:55, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

User:Sanket ukani

Thanks for deleting those copyvios by User:Sanket ukani. I'm still learning how to use the Request CV Revdel script, so I hope I marked all of those articles correctly. BilCat (talk) 01:55, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

There is just that off by one revision that I mentioned on your talk page. I don't use the script for filling the revdel template so I am of no help on your learning. -- Whpq (talk) 01:59, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Just saw the note on your talk page. Play-action pass had the correct revision. It was also the simplest since it was a single revision that needed hiding. The other three had intervening edits so a range (start and end) had to be specified. -- Whpq (talk) 02:02, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
OK, thanks. So to be clear, I only need to add the diffs where actual copyvios occured? I think I didn't understand before. Or.should I include the intervening edits? BilCat (talk) 02:37, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
The purpose of revision deletion is to remove revisions from view that have copyright violating content. As such, the start of the range is the revision where the copyright violation is introduced. The end of the range is the revision immediately before the edit that removed all of the copyvio. -- Whpq (talk) 11:46, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Decline of G3

Hey Whpq! I saw that you declined my G3 on Draft:The Chaddening (2022) since you stated that it's a completely non-notable short posted to YouTube. May I ask where you found it? I only saw results for a short on YouTube from 2020, or are they the same one and the only thing incorrect on the draft is the year? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:48, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

I found it on Youtube uploaded by a user with a name of molly tee (which is totally unsurprising) and it was uploaded 10 months ago placing it in 2022. -- Whpq (talk) 17:15, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
Ah alright. PRobably the source they were attempting to provide. I had just searched it up and I was finding things for "The Chaddening (2020)" but not 2022. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 17:39, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

New page patrol actions

I noticed you marked Nuclear Medicine Oncology & Radiotherapy Institute Nawabshah as reviewed, which seemed bizarre - it's clearly not read for mainspace without better sourcing. This inspired me to look through your patrol log, and I saw several other problems, such as Hunter Lawrence (motorcyclist) - per Wikipedia:New pages patrol#Proposed deletion of biographies of living people (BLPPROD) you're not supposed to mark pages as reviewed when BLPPRODing them. As a general rule marking something as reviewed means "this is suitable for mainspace", and you seem to be using it to convey a different, broader meaning. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:18, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I've poked around and found that I have Twinkle set to mark pages as reviewed after I tag them. I must have set that a gazillion years ago because I really don't recall setting it, and the last time I've fiddled with Twinkle settings was to change expiry times on watchlist stuff. I've turned the setting off. Thanks for noticing and letting me know. Your vigilance is appreciated. Cheers. -- Whpq (talk) 02:50, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Keith Thompson (British musician) speedy deletion

Hi Whpq, Thank you for the information you have provided re: Keith Thompson (British Musician) article. I'm sure you appreciate this is my first article and I have a lot to learn. I am confident however that I am not infringing any copyright. I have worked alongside Density Music and have been given permission to use text. The same goes for the photograph. I do realize though that I need to make that clear via citation or re-writing and possibly further proof of copyright permission. I would like to work on the article in Sandbox and re-submit when I am satisfied that I have met all the criteria. I acknowledge that I may need help from an experienced Wikipedia editor before this article is acceptable. Any advice would be most welcome.

File:Damayanti Wedding Image.jpg

Hi Whpq. What do you think about the non-free use of File:Damayanti Wedding Image.jpg? The wife in the photo is still living (at least according to the article), and it's her husband who missing and presumed to be Pakastani custody. The reasons given in the rationale for justifying the file's non-free use in the wife's article seem to not meet NFCC#1 or NFCC#8, but I'm wondering if the file should be moved to the article about husband and possibly cropped just to show him. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:05, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

Assuming you cannot find a free image of Vijay Vasant Tambay, then cropping for use in his article is reasonable. -- Whpq (talk) 23:28, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look. I'll see if c:COM:VPC#Copyright assessment for Indian photos leads anywhere. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:28, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Based on c:COM:India#Duration, it doesn't look as if this image of Tambay and his wife (assuming it was taken in 1970) wouldn't enter the public domain until at least 2031 at the earliest. Any other images taken of him around the same time also wouldn't be PD until at least 60 years after first publication. The best hope might be an official Indian Air Force image, but I wasn't able to track down anything with a clear provenance that might already be PD. So, I requested that the current image be cropped, and adjusted the rationale and licensing for use in the Tambay article only. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:33, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Diplomacy

Speedy deletion page recovery

As an employee of MeKiwi Oy, I am hereby authorized to use all of MeKiwi Oy's intelectual property in order to crate the wikipedia page, which incldues Cave Digger 2.

Please restore the deleted page as soon as possible. If evidence of employment is required, I will prepare it. JackiwiVRKiwi (talk) 23:33, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Are you the same person using the account User:JackyVRKiwi? You should stick to a single account per WP:MULTIACCOUNT. Also, Wikipedia's terms of service requires you to disclose if you are being paid. See WP:PAID. AS for restoring the page, the company will need to release the text under a free license. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Until that release of text under a free license is confirmed, I cannot restore the page. -- Whpq (talk) 02:05, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

Diocese of the United Kingdom

Please restore Diocese of the United Kingdom. The source of history was rewritten from main source, including additional citations outside of the main source. I was doing additional editing to make sure it was not a copyright infringement when you removed it. I am not even sure how this got flagged. If you restore it I will immediately publish my edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SAWassen (talkcontribs) 14:28, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

@SAWassen:The bulk of the article is a copyright violation. I cannot restore copyright violations. You must write the article in your own words. If you copy the source and change some text, you will likely have the article deleted again as close paraphrasing is still a copyright violation. What I can do is provide the the other bits of the article to you as a subpage in your user space, but the main part of the article cannot be restored. -- Whpq (talk) 15:33, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
Facts are expressed in words, and there's only a limited way facts can be expressed in words. The bulk of the history is just dates and people and things that happened. There's a very limited way those things than be expressed in an objective manner, and a collection of facts is not copyrightable. I have placed the article, including the edits I was working on when I first got the notification a few hours ago, in my sandbox https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:SAWassen/sandbox . To do more than that is to risk inserting commentary into the facts. SAWassen (talk) 15:55, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
Facts cannot be copyrighted but their expression can which includes the structure of the expression. I'll ask another admin with a lot of experience to review your request. -- Whpq (talk) 01:34, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
There's a lot of list material but a few unique turns of phrase that have to come out. I will do so, so that you can see what I mean. Also, most of the draft consists of mini-bios of bishops and is not about the diocese per se. Not sure these mini-bios impart any info about the diocese itself. But that's not a copyright issue. — Diannaa (talk) 11:55, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

File:John Luce (Royal Navy officer).jpg

Hi Whpq. Just wondering if File:John Luce (Royal Navy officer).jpg actually needs a non-free use rationale given that it's licensed as {{PD-US-expired-abroad}} for local use on English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:40, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

The PD licensing looks correct so there is no need for a non-free usage rationale. -- Whpq (talk) 00:28, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for looking at this. I've cleaned up the file's page accordingly. Should anythihng be done about the file's EXIF data since it specifically is claiming copyright ownership for the National Portrati Gallery of London. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:14, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
No. But a note on the file talk page would be useful. -- Whpq (talk) 11:24, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
I've added a note the file's talk page. Please fix or clarify as needed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:51, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Copyright

Hi - My article was removed because it was deemed to be use of copyrighted material - which is my own material used on a website that I created. And, it does state on that domain that I am the copyright holder. In reality, I am not worried about the contents being copied, it is just a habit to write a copyright on each of my domains. So I understand that a quick search of a few portions of the article that I created for a Wikipedia page would match the text in that website.

Here is my question: If I remove the copyright notice on that domain page, can then I ask to have the Wikipedia article reinstated? Or is there something else that would need to be done.

It is extremely difficult to understand these rules since I have no one to directly ask. And the commercial "pros" at least seem to be scammers. Can you advise me about this? The article is about a Japanese calligraphy master artist. I'm not sure if you were the person that removed the article. My user name is

John Bach'sGoldberg (talk) 04:11, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

See donating copyright material. It is not sufficient to remove the copyright notice. Material is copyright by default when published. You would need to make an explicit declaration of a free license. Note that Wikipedia text is under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license if you are wondering which license to choose. -- Whpq (talk) 05:04, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer. Another question: "You would need to make an explicit declaration of a free license"
It is not clear to me WHERE this declaration needs to be posted. If not on the website where it was written, where?? The link to "free license," for me anyway, doesn't really explain where it needs to be posted. Please help! Bach'sGoldberg (talk) 06:15, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
The declaration of a free license would need to appear on the same web page as the material that is being released under a free license. -- Whpq (talk) 11:00, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! OK, I'll do that right away. Once that's done, then what? Bach'sGoldberg (talk) 18:14, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
You can let me know that the original web page now has a free license by posting a message here with the URL to the page. If I am able to confirm the licensing, I will restore the draft. -- Whpq (talk) 18:15, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
Great! Thank you so much! Bach'sGoldberg (talk) 07:23, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Quick Question

Hi @Whpq I found this sandbox which looks like an autobiography by the user, but also has copied content from Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Tom Holland and Pradeep Kumar (musician), how should this be dealt with? AFD or CSD? Or is it fine since it's only a sandbox? Nobody (talk) 11:28, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

CC-BY-SA is a license that requires attribution for any re-use which means attribution must be provided no matter where the material is reused, including sandboxes. Note that AFD does not apply as this is in user space. -- Whpq (talk) 12:10, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
@Whpq MfD, not AfD. Also, the copyvio is only part of the problem, the copied content implies that the subject: Has an M.S. from Stanford University in materials science and engineering, has an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, was named a Siebel Scholar, is the CEO of Google, is included in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2020 and much more.
Since some if not all claims are wrong is that not a problem? Nobody (talk) 12:23, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
Most user space drafts are mostly harmless and can be ignored. But if the user space draft is misleading and has unattributed copying, then you can nominate for deletion at WP:MFD. -- Whpq (talk) 12:36, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
Got it, I've nominated it for deletion. Thanks for the explanation. Nobody (talk) 12:52, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Copyright issue

Good day friend you were talking about me working on copyrights not to make mistakes can you share more insights on how i can get rights to a copyrighted content thanks. Digitalageohio (talk) 19:49, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

Page Deleted - Looking for Advice

Hi there - You reviewed and deleted my page for G11 and G12 errors. I've tried to take a new stab at writing this in a broader lens. Would you be able to take a look at the draft before I submit it for review? Any and all advice you have for improvement is welcomed and appreciated. Thank you. Foggychrome (talk) 13:57, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

Your draft is completely unreferenced. As for avoiding copyright and advertising, get rid of the Mission Statement, because they are mostly useless. Get rid of the offerings section, especially when it uses such nonsensical PR language like Building enabling platforms with strategic partners. This allows them to de-risk, scale, and accelerate diagnostic and therapeutic development. If it sounds like a press release, it shouldn't be in an encyclopedia article. You can ask for help at the AFC Help Desk, and/or the Tea House. -- Whpq (talk) 14:17, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. Will take a look into this more and also reach out for help. Foggychrome (talk) 19:02, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

Question...

Hello Whqp, as an administrator I am familiar with (you previously helped me with copyright), I would like to ask a question. Recently, a user popped up on my watchlist who has demonstrated rather peculiar behavior for a new user. The user's first edit was to create a user page with the template {{User page}}. Next was a poorly referenced (but properly formatted) addition to a BLP which I had created a few hours ago, which raised my eyebrow a bit. Whilst they have not done anything egregiously bad, I was wondering if this is a potential case of block evasion, or am I being paranoid? Thanks. X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 21:08, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

Sticking on a user page template is unusual as a first edit, but perhaps they have edited as an IP and is more familiar with editing than you might think. -- Whpq (talk) 21:22, 24 May 2023 (UTC)
Yes. That was my first assumption, many a few editors edit under the guise of an IP address before registering. I'll leave it for now, but I'll still keep an eye out. Cheers for the quick response. X750. Spin a yarn? Articles I've screwed over? 21:39, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure what to do with this one. It looks like it might be a reverse copyvio, but I believe that it was copied from somewhere. The copyvio source says it came from "Wikipedia Canada", but I cannot find it at Canada.Onel5969 TT me 11:14, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Updated file questions

Hi Whpq. Do you think the latest updated versions of File:C V Devan Nair.jpg and File:Antara (news agency) logo.svg should be split and treated as separate files? The non-free one almost certainly the same image, just uncropped and in color, but I can't find a source for it. The "PD-ineligible-USonly" one is just a minor change, but PD files generally aren't overwritten. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:18, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

No, and no. I would ask the uploader for the source of the colour image, and update the source. Splitting the logo just seems like busy work unless you think there is a need to have the Indonesian version of the logo as well as the English. -- Whpq (talk) 03:02, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
Understand and thanks for taking a look at these. I ask the uploader of the colored image to provide a source for it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:54, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Johnmatt1

Hi, thanks for dealing with the G12 of Draft:Atul Jaiprakash Goel. Not sure if you took a look at the author's other edits but every one of them were promotional. I didn't leave them a warning as I thought Johnmatt1 would pass the WP:NOTHERE threshold and would probably be blocked without warning? Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 13:11, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

I've left them a warning. If they continue, then they really can't claim they weren't warned. -- Whpq (talk) 13:35, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for not blocking my account, I would genuinely wanted your help on the Draft:Atul Jaiprakash Goel.
Could you please get the page back so that i can remove all the copyright content from there so that i can re-submit the page.
I will be greatful if you could help me on this.
I am trying to be a good editor on Wikipedia. Johnmatt1 (talk) 14:54, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
No, copyrighted material will not be restored. You will need to write the article in your own own words. -- Whpq (talk) 15:09, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your response, I have made it a point and have written the whole content in my words.
I'll re-submit it today for the verification process.
Once again thank you for your guidance. Johnmatt1 (talk) 15:37, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

Please recover my page

Please recover my page .i made changes you suggest to approve my page . i request you to recover my page. ShahHassanChowdry7 (talk) 21:09, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
I assume you are referring to User:ShahHassanChowdry7/sandbox. The page was deleted because it was promotional to the point that it would need a complete rewrite. As such, I will not restore it, and suggest that you write the article from scratch and avoid allthe superlatives that make it read like advertising. See Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, and Help:Your first article. -- Whpq (talk) 00:12, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

Copyright on articles

I do not know if this is correct spot for this but there have been 2 account that make copy pastes from betawiki website. they are Xpbuild2504 and Winbytedemo. I don't know how or if i should fix this so I am asking admin to do for me. Thanks Tetadřvo (talk) 23:00, 11 June 2023 (UTC)

I can look at it if you provide details. -- Whpq (talk) 23:01, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
Yes. Xpbuild and winbyte make same edits, create draft copied exactly from betawiki article Draft:Windows 95 build 122 Draft:Windows 95 build 285. Tetadřvo (talk) 23:03, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
What are they copies of? Please provide URLs. -- Whpq (talk) 00:38, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
