Congo (area)

Hello. I suppose you didn't mean to create Congo (area) as a spin off of Congo (which now functions as a disambiguation page). I had therefore taken very the first steps to convert it into an article for a geographical region, following existing examples on other geographical regions. 218.250.159.42 (talk) 19:51, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

But actually the reason for me creating Congo (area) was not to develop a long article nor to duplicate the Congo and Congo (disambiguation). I usually create many pages for artists of Congolese origin working in Europe (France elsewhere) but without us knowing precisely from which specific Congo they originate from. Forwarding them to Congo will give huge choices that are unhelpful. So Congo (area) was created to reduce choices to just two. So when we don't know an artist or another person's precise country of origin, we can link him to Congo (area) as if being able to say he is from Congo but without the need to specify which Congo. What you are trying to do is to expand the concept into describing a "historical" African Congo before the European occupation arose and present day borders drawn. This historical Congo area concept might include even areas beyond the two specific republics into areas that were historically Congolese but now geographically in other African states like Portuguese Congo, or say during Kingdom of Kongo (1400–1914), covering parts of present-day Angola and the two Congo states and Kongo dia Nlaza (until late in the 16th century), a former kingdom absorbed by the Kingdom of Kongo. It is a legitimate effort actually, and very important concept. But probably that aspect might have been already covered in Wikipedia anyway. Still Wikipedia is a free space and all are welcome to add materials. But it kind of defeats the purpose to create it in Congo (area). I would suggest opening another page entitled Historical Congo and start from there. Just a thought werldwayd (talk) 04:12, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
That's logical, since both Congos are French-speaking countries. But I believe the proper way forward is to figure out the actual origin of these people. In case they're having ancestry from both Congos or their ancestry predates the colonisation of the Congos, the Congo (area) article would probably be good enough. Furthermore, I don't think the geographical region is a historical one. The Kongo people in different countries, for instance, are the same people and have the same native language. It is still one cultural region regardless of the political borders. 218.250.159.42 (talk) 10:24, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
That's precisely why I created the page. Cabonda was a good addition to this. I don't know if there are other "Congo" areas as well to add. I do appreciate that as the verifiable directorial debut of a notable person, this article meets a criteria of WP:NF... but I ask that you take a look at this edit and consider that a redirect is pretty much okay for now just so long as there is no prejudice toward a recreation of the article if/when more sources become available AND as long as the returned article be properly sourced and maintain a properly neutral tone. You really should pay attention to these notices. The addition of a claim that she had a charting single in France is sufficient to clear A7, and I think any admin would have accepted the explanation on the talk page. All getting into an edit war with SDPatrolBot does is make you unnecessarily run the risk of getting blocked.—Kww(talk) 02:28, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Dear Werldwayd, I hope you are well. You strike me as a very responsible, sensible and experienced Wikipedia editor. You have done wonders with the Maher Zain pages. Can I please ask you to take a look at a concerning page (even though it is probably not one you would ordinarily have any interest in). I am a bit concerned about the bio page on Tricia Walsh-Smith. One user who calls herself Fruitinlondon claims actually to be Tricia Walsh-Smith, the subject of the page. On the talk page I have encouraged this user to treat the BLP page with great care and to comply with Wikipedia Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons guidelines. I have drawn this person's attention to our need to be very careful with verifiability, neutrality, and avoiding original research. In my opinion, this person has recklessly edited this page at times. I will be very grateful if you will please have a look at this person's edits, as well as my thorough advice to him or her on the Tricia Walsh-Smith talk page. I've never had the experience before of dealing with an editor who claims to be the subject of the article. Have you? I want to be scrupulously fair and reasonable, whilst maintaining standards. Please offer me and / or the user any advice or guidance that will help to keep the page neutral, factual and scrupulously verified. Thank you for your time. Thomas Hardy

I noticed that you recently changed the Thomas Hardy page into a dab, redirecting the famous writer's page to Thomas Hardy (writer). Thomas Hardy the writer gets 50000 views per month while none of the other pages on the new dab get even 1000. It seems like a strange thing to do to make 50000 people per month search a dab page to get to the Thomas Hardy writer page. INeverCry 22:35, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Actually I am ok for reversal back to earlier set-up without discussion as now I am convinced the novelist has such notability that it deserves to be the main page werldwayd (talk) 22:41, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
I hope you don't mind my making a quick suggestion. Before making a big move like this I would check the page views of the main article and the number of links to the main article. Even though they were put together for competing in Eurovision 2011 they are still separate artists and not really an official group. A majority of the information here should be either placed on both of their own separate articles or place them inside the Azerbaijan in Eurovision 2011 one.

Ki Fitzgerald‎

I want to do an Afd on him, but I thought I'd get your opinion first. You are more into music than I am. I'm unable to find that he has released any albums. He has co-written some songs. The Jonas Brother's song list five songwriters. I can find plenty of refs of him suing is old band, Busted, for money. He left the band before any albums and Busted hit it big after he left. His claims were he wrote some of the songs. But, he lost the case. He also goes by the name of Ki McPhail. Out of my last 100 Afd's I submitted, only 3 were kept and they were singers. The Billboard Brasil chart is quite acceptable, as are the raw Crowley Broadcasting Services charts, both of which are of Brazilian origin. That's documented on WP:GOODCHARTS. There are a number of countries with no acceptable singles charts, and Portugal is unfortunately one of them. I wish there was a good way to avoid the bias, but it's a matter of finding reliable sources. My life becomes easier every time someone finds a reliable chart for the countries that don't have them.
I do have problems with the idea that you brought data in from the Portuguese Wikipedia and didn't independently verify the chart positions contained in it and provide references. Please don't do that: it's great to use a foreign language Wiki as a starting point, but the data in it is just as subsceptible to vandalism as it is here: it can't be trusted without verification.—Kww(talk) 19:20, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Just as a followup, the rule of thumb for a chart winding up on WP:BADCHARTS is that is a single-station/single-network/single-vendor chart or that no one can find a trace of reliable coverage of it. All it takes for me to take it off of WP:BADCHARTS is that someone can demonstrate that it gets some level of press coverage (local press is just fine) and that it isn't single-vendor. Getting on WP:GOODCHARTS usually requires that someone can point at a stable archive of the chart. There are a lot of charts that are acceptable for use (Monitor Latino, for example) that require manual archiving: those aren't listed on WP:GOODCHARTS, but they don't show up on WP:BADCHARTS either. Other editors may add and remove charts for slightly different reasons, but I'm probably the most influential editor on these two guidelines. I'm sensitive to the kind of issues you are talking about, and do my best to make sure the guidelines are as liberal as they can be without violating WP:RS.—Kww(talk) 19:37, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Sirius XM Hits 1

Regarding your deletion of the weekly countdowns on Sirius XM Hits 1. In this case, it's not the fact they were deleted that I have a problem with, it's your reason of "copyright infringement" that I fail to understand. First of all, the full weekly charts are published here at Sirius XM Hits 1's web page: http://www.siriusxm.com/hits1 , so obviously the website wants to make the countdowns accessible. Second of all, weekly charts are replicated on music forums all over the internet every week, such as here and here, if that was a copyright infringement don't you think those would have been shut down and warned by now? And finally I've requested semi-protection for the Sirius XM Hits 1 page twice I believe, both times the countdowns were there, and both times I was given semi-protection, if the countdowns were truly a copyright infringement don't you think the admin would have done something about it before semi-protecting the article? Top 50 Charts are not acceptable SNEP charts

Hello. Many thanks for your contributions both in English Wikipedia and in French Wikipedia. I noticed that for French chart positions, you are using the chart published in Premiere called Top 50 (MCM charts). http://musique.premiere.fr/TOP-50 This chart is not an official chart, is not based on actual sales and often gives much higher positions to singles. You are doing so while keeping the SNEP titles which is very misleading and incorrect. What we consistently should use are the "official" SNEP charts that are based on actual physical sales and downloads. Three locations for this and all identical: SNEP/Disque en France (main source) This week's chart is here: http://www.disqueenfrance.com/fr/page-256084.xml .. Just a couple of days later, the same chart is reproduced at Charts in France at http://www.chartsinfrance.net/charts/singles.php and finally with a delay of about a week at most times at http://www.lescharts.com/ For English Wikipedia positions please abide only by these three and don't use the Top 50 or Airplay charts or whatever... For French Wikipedia, I know many charts are being used on various pages (though I think clearly SNEP charts should be uses), but in any case, if you use Premier Top 50 charts, please don't keep them as "SNEP" positions, but change the description to clearly say Top 50 not only in the reference but in the main text too. For French Zumba He Zumba Ha, I have already made the distinction, reinstating also the SNEP position which is 27 whereas Top 50 says #13. A very good example of how "inflated" and unreliable Premiere Top 50 figures are is in Khaled's classification. Premiere says he is #2, whereas actual Khaled classification according to SNEP this week is just #17 If you have changed other SNEP positions based on this Top 50 in English Wikipedia, please revert to original SNEP positions according to the three charts as indicated and from now on please don't replace them with Premiere Top 50 MCM positions.

Hey, I saw you are a fan of Alex Papaconstantinou as you originally created his page. I recently added a more detailed selected production discography table to his page. Some more info needs to be filled in, especially some of his earlier work. I have a feeling he did more with Antique, but I am unable to find album liners online to confirm. I knew Alex Papaconstantinou's work through Sarbel and Cameron Cartio and of course I saw Anna Vissi live in Cyprus and she was awesome. Alex has written so many of Anna Vissi's songs and she is a great artist. He also had great songs for Elena Paparizou and I just adore Paparizou in everything she did with Antique and solo. I too feel that Papaconstantinou did far more with Antique than these two songs, but the problewm is that discogs.com album pages mention only the Antique song titles but not the full credits in their albums like Opa Opa, Die for You, Alli Mia Fora and Blue Love, whereaas for other artists, many carry names of the writers, composers and the producers, even the musicians playing. It is also strange that Alex doesn't even have a page in Greek Wikipedia which is a shame. That needs to be fixed by an editor who knows Greek. Thanks for the tips. I managed to get a hold of the album liners for Antique and filled in some information. There seems to be a bit of an anomaly with the Discogs source though. It lists him as a writer and producer for "Follow Me" and "Ligo Ligo", yet the album liners only list him as a writer. I guess we should go with the liners in this case. Also do you happen to know what he did with Stephen Simmonds? I can't seem to find any info, other than the fact that he worked on an album with him. Thanks again. As this is not as essential a music relation as the others mentioned, I took the name out. Anyway it was a nice opportunity to get to know Stephen's beautiful music, but no need to mention him on the Alex page. Actually this search for credits started as we were speculating that Alex Papaconstantinou had written far more songs for Antique than the ones shown on his page. Diiscogs also mentioned very few songs which was strange. So your work is very much appreciated to be able to expand the list of credits for this talented artist songwriter, producer. His effect goes far beyond just Greek singers as is clear. I also wondered whatever happened to Nikos Panagiotidis of Antique. Did he continue or he just stopped. I just loved his part in the Antique songs so much... and if he did continue singing, then we need to have a page for him as well in Wikipedia. Hi I was told by Bgwhite to contact you in regards to getting help on creating music pages for artists. I created the page on behalf of Mike but it required citations. It was marked for a Speedy Deletion but I was able to provide any proof needed as I had Mike's Permission to make the page and he said If he can do anything to help with citations etc then he would. I figured Instead of just keep creating the page and have it taking down for speedy deletion every time, I save efforts and talk to you as Bgwhite said you are the expert on music pages etc.

So if you can help me it would be a great help as I'm new to page creation on wikipedia and I need to know all I can to avoid all the "red tape" as such in the future.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. AFT5 newsletter

Hey all :). A couple of quick updates (one small, one large)

First, we're continuing to work on some ways to increase the quality of feedback and make it easier to eliminate and deal with non-useful feedback: hopefully I'll have more news for you on this soon :).

Second, we're looking at ways to increase the actual number of users patrolling and take off some of the workload from you lot. Part of this is increasing the prominence of the feedback page, which we're going to try to do with a link at the top of each article to the relevant page. This should be deployed on Tuesday (touch wood!) and we'll be closely monitoring what happens. Let me know if you have any questions or issues :).
