Dead links

Hi W., thanks for your contributions. Regarding this edit, just so you know, it is customary not to remove dead links in the References section (see WP:DEADLINK), but to attempt to repair them by finding a new URL to the source, or at least preserving the reference without the link. The easiest way to do this is by checking the dead link at http://web.archive.org , which keeps archived versions of webpages even after the domains expire. When that doesn't work, you can sometimes keep the reference in with just the title, author, date, etc...this, of course, is why it's important to encourage users to cite their sources properly, rather than just giving links and no information (since when they only give a link, as in the reference on the page that you just edited, it makes it much more difficult for people like you and me to find the original source after the link goes dead).

Estimada Sra. Umpiérrez, before adding links to touristic websites, you might want to have a look at the policy on external links again. Although specific links may be allowed under some circumstances, repeatedly adding them in german, english and spanish articles will in most cases result in all of them being removed. The site www.turismolanzarote.com is a marketing tool to promote tourism on Fuerteventura, not a reliable scientific source. As the site does "not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article", there is no reason to link it. Saludos, W. Dear W. Edlmeier, I do appreciate your consistent care in protecting Wikipedia articles from abuse by website promoters, but please do not throw the baby out with the bath water. The guidelines of Wikipedia specifically state that "Official Sites" are relevant as an external link, but it appears as though you have a bias against "official 'tourism' sites" and your only argument is "not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article". Please consider that in regard to, at least, the patronatos of each Canary Island as well as the Official Canary Island Tourism Website, in each case a substantial staff is working to bring the most relevant content regarding official tourism to the web user, especially regarding current events. This governing staff and their job of continually posting up-to-date official tourism content is a "unique resource". Having only an external link to a corresponding Wikitravel.org, is a disservice to Wikipedia users as it equates a resource for official tourism information to the semantics of "travel guide".Heatman1 (talk) 09:52, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized.
