2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation!

To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

  • Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
  • Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
  • Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
  • Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
  • Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
  • Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.

If you have any final concerns about the WikiCup's rules and regulations, please ask them now, before the Cup begins to avoid last minute problems. You may come to the WikiCup's talk page, or any of the judge's user talk pages. We're looking forwards to a great 2010 WikiCup! On behalf of the WikiCup judges, iMatthew talk at 03:48, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

  • Hello, the flag you signed up with at the 2010 WikiCup Signups page was removed as it did not meet our flag requirements. Your flag must "be under a free license that is of a (current or historical) continent, country, state, county or city and has NOT already been chosen by another contestant. You may not use the flag of Mexico." Please return to the signups page and choose a new flag that meets these requirements. Thank you! iMatthew talk at 22:39, 5 December 2009 (UTC)
I had to restore {{flagicon|IND}} India to my name. I was using that since last year WikiCup. Unlike in many other countries, there are NO state/city flags in India. Hence I am unable to use any other flag other than of India. If duplicate flags are not permissible, you may add another flag of ur choice -- Tinu Cherian - 03:44, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi admin a user has threatened a member of the Gandhi family probably the whole family probably requires an oversight or blocking that IP --NotedGrant Talk 15:02, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Yup.The problem is serious.I think there is some Hate India group forming in Wikipedia. A racist attack on my talk page here along with couple submitted by Notedgrant is ample proof.  arun  talk  15:56, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
Na that's impossible Arun the first IP was from Australia and we know what that means The second guy is totally unrelated (He's from China ;) )--NotedGrant Talk 16:07, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
The users may be unrelated, but their motive seem to coincide. May be like Notedgrant said, it might be a coincidence... arun  talk  16:20, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

HI

HI Tinu. Where is everyone from India these days? It seems we've lost some valuable Indian contributors. I can't believe how bad some of the articles on Indian cities and states are which really ought to be up to scratch by now. So many poorly referenced articles on cities without photographs and decent written info. But there is a huge amount to do and it seems we just don't have the contributors. Most of the editors from India it seems are not capable of writing quality articles and has resulted in a load of unreferenced spam in a lot of articles on towns and villages. Sigh, why can't we have more decent Indian editors like yourself, Nvvchar, Yellow Monkey and Red Tiger!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:12, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter : XLV (November 2009)

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue XLV (November 2009)
Project news
  • The Academy Content Drive concluded on 31 October. The first place Golden Wiki went to TomStar81 for 13 entries; the Silver Wiki was awarded to YellowMonkey for 11 entries, and Patar knight was presented with the Bronze Wiki for 3 entries. All other entrants were awarded the WikiChevrons or a barnstar for their contributions. Thank you to everyone who fielded an entry! All editors are encouraged to check out the newly expanded Academy.
  • A discussion about the notability of military people has resulted in an update to our in-house style guide. Prompted by some recent "articles for deletion" discussions, members felt that we should provide clearer guidance on the types of person that are most likely to meet Wikipedia's biographical notability criteria. The resulting advice, which you can see here, should be very helpful in both future deletion discussions and in deciding where best to focus article-writing efforts.
  • Our Task Force housekeeping discussion is now coming to a close. In October a number of proposals were made for rationalising our extensive list of Task forces. Although a few areas remain to be decided, project members have approved the changes summarised here. These will be enacted shortly, so if you haven't yet had your say, now's the time!

Speedy deletion of Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary

Hi, I disagree with your speedy deletion of Sudhir Kumar Chaudhary, as I believe the references provided did indicate notability, given that I cited two independent sources with articles about him. I appreciate that as he is notable only for being a cricket fan there is grounds for deletion, but I would judge that to be an AfD matter, not a speedy delete. Other such articles as Chacha Cricket and Beatle Bob have survived deletion (albeit closely). I would appreciate if you could restore this article and then we can go through an AfD. If the decision there is delete, then I will gladly allow that decision to stand, but I don't think that one person can choose for this to go and that be final. Kind regards, Harrias (talk) 16:46, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

The reason why I deleted the article: The only said notablility reasons for the subject are
  • 1) The person is a fan of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and the India national cricket team. ( I can show thousands of people including me ;D )
  • 2) He sends 1000 litchis to Tendulkar in gratitude for the match tickets and gifts he receives from the cricketer. ( is that really something to be termed notable ?
  • 3) this was reported by ONE newspaper. If he is so popular in India, why wasnt he reported by any other newspapers. I personally have been mentioned and photo printed in atleast 4 mainstream newspapers in last one week. ( See some mentioned above section). But I don't think I myself is notable and worthy to have an article on wikipedia. ( My personal opinion )

I will restore the article after some consulation with some fellow admins and leave it for an AFD if required. Thanks for your suggestions and opinions. I will get back to you -- Tinu Cherian - 17:23, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your explanation and consideration. As I said, if there is a consensus to delete then I can appreciate that. But with regards to 1), I would agree that yes there are thousands of fans, but how many of them are quite as obvious and dedicated as him? Painted yourself like that recently? :P Harrias (talk) 17:37, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

WikiCup flag

Hi Tinucherian/Archives/2009! The flag you chose for the 2010 WikiCup was removed either because it was already taken by another editor, or it didn't meet the criteria. Please select a new flag before this Friday, that is "under a free license that is of a (current or historical) continent, country, state, county or city and has NOT already been chosen by another contestant." Thank you, iMatthew talk at 13:09, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Flag

As you didn't choose a flag for the WikiCup, you've been given the flag of France. You're welcome to change it to something else before the competition starts. J Milburn (talk) 02:15, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Garden, iMatthew, J Milburn, and The ed17 19:24, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
