Churches of India

Hello Tinu, I will help you in your efforts to bring out information on all the important churches in Kerala , irrespective of denominations to Wikipedia.I will try the best of my ability to add neutral information while creating or editing articles.I think I have a good image of St.George, and will upload it soon. Thanks Arun V Roy (talk) 11:57, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you. Happy editing -- ₮inucherian (Talk) - 06:50, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Good morning,

Tinucherian:

Thanks for inviting me to join in the Project Christianity. I was planning to just not do anything with your message, but when I clicked on your User Page I felt inclined to write you this note.

My involvement with Christianity is almost completely through it's art. I am not a Christian and am accused in some places of being anti-Christian, which I do not feel that I am.

Here is the short version of my involvement with that religion and I think that it will become clear why I chose to mention it to you.

In 1952, when I was 4 years old, my father was employed by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization and posted to Sri Lanka, then called Ceylon. In 1958 I was sent to a boarding school in Madras (now Tamil Nadu) called Kodaikanal School. It can not be that far from where you were born. It was run by Christian missionaries and their approach to the religion was enough to turn me away from it. However I was well educated in it's precepts and continue to dabble in it. Being an art historian I am particularly interested in the sculpture that the church produced.

I also have become a bit disenchanted with the bureaucratic turn that wikipedia has taken in the past few years and have cut way back on my participation here. I used to do much more.

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.03/wiki.html?pg=1

All this introspecion is leading me to accept your kind invitation. One of the rules that I live my life by, Rule # 19, is when asked a question, my default answer is , "yes." Please excuse my rambling, your simple note generated all sorts of thoughts and I somehow felt inclined to pass them on to you. Life is supposed to be interesting. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 13:58, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Good to hear from you. It was run by Christian missionaries and their approach to the religion was enough to turn me away from it. - pained me ... Anyways All are the not the same.. Anyways Best of luck ! - Tinucherian (talk) 15:10, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Well it pained me at the time too, but now it was part of my education and as such is okay with me. I have long since stopped judging a religion by the actions that individuals take in the name of that belief.

Christianity coordinator

Well, I think the elections are now closed. I'm not entirely sure what to do regarding the tie, though. Two questions:

  • Do you feel up to closing the balloting or would you prefer someone else do it?
  • Do you think we should have a formally designated "lead coordinator" or not? John Carter (talk) 19:05, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Unfortunately there was less interest for the elections among the members. One reason is that there are very few active members. Fortunately we were able to get recently some new members with good enthusiasm. I am sure this trend will grow forward.
We will close the elections for now. Please accept the post of Lead co-coordinator. In the event of this tie, I hereby nominate you for the post. I will make the announce in the talk page. - -- ₮inucherian (Talk) - 03:04, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Tourist attractions in Mysore, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Tourism related information should be added to Wikitravel page of Mysore and not here. Please move content from this page into the Wikitravel page and delete the page. Great collection of data though

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Kalyan (talk) 13:30, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Haha ! What a joke ?? -- ₮inucherian (Talk) - 16:27, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
This ain't a joke. Earlier, i created an article on tourism spots in Tirumala that was speedy deleted with the comment to move the contents to the wikitravel page. I have asked for Ncmvocalists' opinion on whether we can retain travel & tourism related information in wikipedia. If not, this content has to be moved to wikitravel. my personal opinion is that there is good content in here that will improve the wikitravel page. --Kalyan (talk) 00:49, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Hi dude, Sorry for my initial response (a bit sarcastic )on your action of putting SD Tag on the article Tourist attractions in Mysore . There is a big difference between writing style for articles for wikipedia and wikitravel , the latter more of a travel guide while the former will be of encyclopedic in nature. I was successful in many similar articles on Bangalore, Kochi etc and they have all featured on Main Page as DYKs , which means they are indeed encyclopedic and confirming to Wiki Standards. I am not sure how was the style of your article , but just because your article was deleted , don't do try the same on other articles. Write the Thirumala article is the style similar to mine and I guarantee it will be appreciated in Wikipedia. -- ₮inucherian (Talk) - 04:05, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Jacobites

Hey Tinucherian! I am looking for an info on Jacobites. I bumped into an odd sentence in the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church article and realised that it says there the The Church has dioceses and churches in most parts of India... Church can not have churches. I think it should be parishes. However do Jacobites call it parish? I left a message in the article's talk page, but I think you are the best person to council. wiki-project Christianity invite

Thank you for the invite to wiki-project christianity. I have to admit I haven't been a very active wikipedian lately, and I am not orthodox at all in my christian studies. I believe you probably found me on wiki-project saints. I am very interested in hagiography, and I intend to contribute more to wiki-project saints in the future, but I don't think that I belong in wiki-project christianity at this point. Good luck! Tamil nationalism

Well it does seem to be quite well referenced actually. Whether it's a POV push or not, I'm not sure. I am the one who originally approved the article, but I did say at the time that I hoped there was nothing contentious in the article that would get it slapped with a POV tag. I'm really not familiar enough with the conflict myself to have a firm opinion.

If you really think it's POV however, I suggest you put a POV tag on it and I will pull it from DYK and substitute something else. Maybe we can take it to one or two of the relevant portals and see what they think. Gatoclass (talk) 11:33, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I see Borgqueen has pulled it already. I guess it needs more discussion, is there anything in particular you don't like about it? Gatoclass (talk) 11:35, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the response.
"originated as defensive measures from Hindu revivalists against Protestant missionaries?" I am a bit skeptic about this statement , altough I am not sure of its history. I am still OK if it is referenced with Reliable Sources . Thatz all -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 11:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
I have opened a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sri Lanka Reconciliation, so hopefully those more familiar with the conflict can express their views and reach a consensus. I think it's probably best if we leave it up to them now. Thanks for bringing your concerns to our attention. Gatoclass (talk) 11:53, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for addressing my concern. -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 13:15, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

(ec) "originated as defensive measures from Hindu revivalists against Protestant missionaries?" Is actually referenced to two Reliable source. One is a online peer reviewed article and the other is from a book that is published by a reputable publishing company. The statement itself might seem pov to users not familiar with Arumuga Navalar. He was the one who is attributed with the defensive measures against Protestant missionaries, however, he was not claiming that the missionaries were bad. Instead, he helped to Translate the Bible into Tamil. Please see Arumuga Navalar for a more clear understanding on the "originated as defensive measures from Hindu revivalists against Protestant missionaries?" Watchdogb (talk) 13:20, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Watchdogb, Thanks for your response. Is there any third party sources to verify this as this is a controversal issue ? -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 13:37, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't quite understand what you mean by Is there any third party sources to verify this. Do you want third party citation ? What would be ideal ? Watchdogb (talk) 14:17, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I can provide an exert from a website that quotes the the following:

A full and satisfying answer will have to include the little known but highly influential work of one man, Arumuga Navalar of Jaffna (1822-1879). He is regarded as the “father” of modern Tamil prose and a staunch defender of Shaivism against Christian missionary attacks. Less well known are his attempts to reform Shaivism itself. This chapter will examine his career as a religious activist between the ages of nineteen and thirty-two, when he plowed the social and intellectual fields he cultivated the rest of his life. (1) Arumuga worked within the heritage of Shaiva scholars as he responded to the newer challenges of an intrusive Western Civilization

The book can be seen here
Hi Tinu, It is from the following book
Gunasingham, M. (1999). Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism: A study of its origins. Sydney: MV Publications. ISBN 0-646-38106-7. from page # 108. The statement is cited in the main body of the article not in the lead.It is PhD thesis from an Australian University by the author which was later published. It is just a matter of fact not a POV statement. It is ironic how a Nationalism's start. The reaction to Protestant missionary activity was the spark but it took its own trajectory over 200 years later. ThanksTaprobanus (talk) 17:17, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello Tinucherian! Because I have been a mediator in the Sri Lanka conflict for quite a while, Watchdogb has asked me to verify the reference. I herewith confirm that I have seen a copy of an Essay by Ravi Vaitheespara (University of Manitoba), titled "Beyond ‘Benign’ and ‘Fascist’ Nationalisms: Interrogating the Historiography of Sri Lankan Tamil Nationalism" in South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies, Vol.XXIX, no.3, December 2006. On page 436, it states "The extant historiography of Sri Lankan Tamil nationalism traces the early deological roots of Tamil nationalism to the Tamil/Saivite reformist and revival movement led by Arumuga Navalar that began around the mid nineteenth century in northern Sri Lanka. As was the case with many other South Asian religio-cultural revival movements, it was seen as a defensive response to the threat posed to the indigenous order by the British colonial and missionary presence and activities." That is at the beginning of a page long paragraph; the remainder of the paragraph discusses this point in further detail, citing research by various authors of the last 30 years, and ends with the interesting question: "This analysis begs the question of what kind of subaltern syncretistic traditions may have been lost or supplanted by the nineteenth century Tamil/Saivite reformist movement." Let me know if there is anything else I can do to clarify this issue. Sebastian (talk) 19:49, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

If that's what you think is the best answer, no objections. We probably should get them concluded formally in any event. A few major questions, like which articles to include in the Core topics work gorup, probably should be discussed. I am going to try to shorten the main project page's todo list by adding another page and linking to it at the end of each subheading, by the way, so with luck it will take up less space soon. Well, I've never really done very much for the Wikiproject, and I haven't done anything recently. I'm not on Wikipedia very regularly any more, also. Due to popular demand, HAU has a new look. Since the changes are so dramatic, I may have made some mistakes when translating the data. Please take a look at WP:HAU/AS and make sure your checkmarks are in the right place and feel free to add or remove some. There is a new feature, SoxBot V, a recently approved bot, automatically updates your online/offline status based on the length of time since your last edit. To allow SoxBot V to do this, you'll need to copy [[Category:Wikipedians who use StatusBot]] to your userpage. Obviously you are not required to add this to your userpage, however, without this, your status will always be "offline" at HAU. Thanks. Useight (talk) 02:31, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Re: bot assessment

It's a good idea, and had it been suggested a year ago, I'd say yes right away. But I've already given thought to an assessment drive just for next month, and other than fixing some details, we want to give it a try first (even if it's seemingly impossible). After that phase is over though, we can rethink it. Ncmvocalist (talk) 05:26, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, What about atleast Option1 ? It will still ease us before the manual assessment drive.. This is just a suggestion. -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 05:46, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Option 1 is good. Option 2 may work well too, where the article is stubbed automatically (Per Ganeshk who has explained it better at the noticeboard talk page). But I'd prefer if we kept off option 2 until right after the drive is done. Ncmvocalist (talk) 15:31, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

RfA thanks!

RfA: Many thanks
Many thanks for your participation in my recent request for adminship. I am impressed by the amount of thought that goes into people's contribution to the RfA process, and humbled that so many have chosen to trust me with this new responsibility. I step into this new role cautiously, but will do my very best to live up to your kind words and expectations, and to further the project of the encyclopedia. Again, thank you. --jbmurray (talkcontribs) 06:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

India Project: automation

Hi, I am interested in automation department also. But I am new in WP, so need to know how bots work and how they are coded usually. Any pointers? For example, say, I want to add appropriate category to all Padma Bhushan recipients for whom an wikipage already exists and the category is not already added. Thanks. GDibyendu (talk) 18:56, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

This should help you

-- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 02:26, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

HAU Asia is currently showing you as "offline" and that's what your status page is showing right now. I changed your status page temporarily to "online" and HAU updated correctly. Everything appears to be working properly, or, at least, I couldn't duplicated the problem. Be aware that there is a slight lag of between 5 and 15 minutes before SoxBot V updates your status, so maybe that was the problem. Keep an eye on it and let me know if it acts funny again. Useight (talk) 05:15, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. Even I had changed to online on my page manually to see HAU updated correctly. Anyways now it is showing Offline instead of unknown. BTW I hav removed the SoxBot V cat and I prefer getting the status from Gris G bot. Thanks again -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 06:57, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello Tinucherian/Archives/2008/May! I'd like to leave a note of appreciation for your recent support of my request for adminship, which ended successfully today (and to my surprise) with 83 supports, 4 opposes, and 2 neutral. What I have taken back from my RFA is that I've perhaps been too robust in debate and I will endevour to improve upon that aspect of my usership. I would like to thank you again and state here that I will not let any of my fellow Wikipedian's down. Thanks again! --Jza84 |  Talk  11:33, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

The deletion argument that you presented does not fit one of the pre-set criteria for speedy deletion. If you want to see this page deleted, please refer to Wikipedia:Guide to deletion for other options. By the way, we have the same birthday :) Brianga (talk) 07:03, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I just revereted an IP undo of a speedy delete tag(here) , assuming it is vandalism. btw belated happy birthday wishes :) -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 07:23, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
OK. Just remember that any editor who is not the creator of a page may remove a speedy tag from it. Brianga (talk) 07:29, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Assessment

Hi Tinucherian, I noticed you have started doing project assessments using Kingbotk plugin and AWB. The job will be easier if you created an alternate account, User:TinucherianBot for this purpose and get it approved for the project assessments. See Ganeshbot 1 and LostBot for examples. This way you can use the bot tab on AWB and setup "Autosave" every 10 secs. It will save you a lot of time. Thanks for taking India-related automation tasks. Let me know if you have any questions. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 02:31, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Since using AWB assessment is essentially not a bot, can we get the approval as a Bot ? -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 03:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Ya ... I saw Ganeshbot1 , I will raise a similar BoT approval .. -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 03:23, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Need a help..Once I populate ALL the articles recursively from the Category:India , how do I find the narrow down to articles WITHOUT the {{WP India}} banner ? Sorry to ask these elementry questions, but I have started using AWB only since yeserday night -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 03:32, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Understood how this works now .. But I have noticed a problem with catergorization of unassessed articles. I have left a note on WP India talkpage. Thoughts ?? -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 08:35, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Since the bot will make thousands of edits (to make assessments), it will flood the new pages/recent changes and disturb recent page patrollers. The approval process will add a bot-flag (to make it different from a regular account) so that bot-edits can be hidden from the view. Bot edits are hidden by default on the recent changes. Hope that explains why you need a bot approval for this.
  • Even though the bot is approved for this task, any new task will still need to be approved. Ganeshbot is at task 3.
  • The name, TinucherianBot was just a suggestion. You can call it whatever you like, but it should be able to partly identify the bot-owner. For example, CherianBot, TinuBot etc.
  • Please don't populate large cats recursively (for example, India). You will be tagging wrong articles (false positives). Start with smaller sub-categories to minimise false positives (for example, geography, politics etc.). Even after you take a lot of precaution, you will still end up tagging un-related articles, and get talk page complaints. Handle these complaints patiently and explain that your assessment is based on categories and you will fix any issues that come up.
  • To your question, how to avoid assessed articles from pulling up. You don't have to worry about that. Kingbotk plugin will skip the articles that already have the banner, remember to check, "skip when no changes made" on the skip tag. Simply recursively pull up a category and start the Kingbotk plugin. Right click on the article list box and "Filter out non-mainspace", and then select "convert to talk pages".
Feel free to ask in case you have more questions. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice and help. I have made the BRFA at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/TinucherianBot -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 12:20, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Good, I noticed it is already approved for 25 trial edits. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:27, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Bot malfunction

Please do not tag Bangladeshi newspapers under WP:India. All such mistaken edits have been reverted. Please fix your bot. --Ragib (talk) 02:16, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Can you give me the diff / articles? This is not neccessarily a Bot Malfunction but a wrong categorization ( See User:TinucherianBot/Autotagg ). If you can give me the articles, I could possibly fix them. Sorry for the confusion - TinucherianBot (talk) 03:54, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
I found out the issue , The cat Category:Bengali newspapers falls both in Category:Newspapers published in India and Category:Newspapers published in Bangladesh . Can we do something about this ??
The categorization is not incorrect. A Bengali language newspaper, published either from Bangladesh or from India, should fall under the category Category:Bengali newspapers. You can't mark articles based on the language criteria only ... the language is used in both the countries. So, a better option will be to use country specific categories not tied to languages. Same goes for people ... Category:Bengali people and its subcategories are also shared by Indian and Bangladeshi citizens. So, you need to use some other criteria to mark project associations. Thanks. --Ragib (talk) 07:37, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
