Project talk page tagging

Hello Tinu. Does your bot still do wikiproject tagging on talk pages? The previous bot that used to do it for WP:VIET, SatyrBot (talk · contribs) has left, and I was wondering if you could step in on the categories at Wikipedia:WikiProject Vietnam/Categories. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:19, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Blnguyen, I am happy to do the task with TinucherianBot. Meanwhile can you engage the project members to carefully verify ALL the categories and remove all the possibly wrong categories. Dont misunderstand by being cautious here , as we have faced many issues with such huge scale bot tagging before (see WP:BON#TinucherianBot ). Once I get the final go ahead, I will start the bot with the final list. -- Tinu Cherian - 05:04, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I already manually looked at all of the new ones that were added and all the rest were fine when SatyrBot does them. The other guys have been fine with it since it was started. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:13, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
OK. I will also have a look on each categories one by one as much as possible... Can you look in War related categories for once more carefully...The chances of wrong articles in them are usually more.. I will keep you also posted of the progress ...-- Tinu Cherian - 05:19, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
I have also left a message at the project talk page and on the members' talk page -- Tinu Cherian - 07:11, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
{{WPVN}} is the one. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:39, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
I know.. :) you can see the progress here User:TinucherianBot/Autotagg/WPVIET -- Tinu Cherian - 07:41, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Completed : Over 4000 article talk pages were edited including new additions and fixing banner redirects ....It was a pleasure working for this project. Now that I have gained 'confidence' in your project categories, next time it should be much easier. Don't hesitate to ask my Bot for help for your project again :) -- Tinu Cherian - 04:41, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi thanks a lot for that. WP:CRIC and WP:AUS also did the same thing before SatyrTN (talk · contribs) went on break so I think we might want to use your services again. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:16, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Your talk page blue box

Tinucherian, the box hides the last bit of the bottom line of message text. Is this fixable? Moondyne 10:19, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Removed for now... I was thinking the same... I will fix this later and add -- Tinu Cherian - 10:23, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter
Issue XXIX (July 2008)
Project news
  • The criteria for Military history A-Class reviews have been overhauled. The new standard is deliberately set higher than before, and is much closer to featured article quality. The new criteria are:
  • A1. The article is consistently referenced with an appropriate citation style, and all claims are verifiable against reputable sources, accurately represent the relevant body of published knowledge, and are supported with specific evidence and external citations as appropriate.
  • A2. The article is comprehensive, factually accurate, neutral and focused on the main topic; it neglects no major facts or details, presents views fairly and without bias, and does not go into unnecessary detail.
  • A3. The article has an appropriate structure of hierarchical headings, including a concise lead section that summarizes the topic and prepares the reader for the detail in the subsequent sections, and a substantial but not overwhelming table of contents.
  • A4. The article is written in concise and articulate English; its prose is clear, is in line with style guidelines, and does not require substantial copy-editing to be fully MoS-compliant.
  • A5. The article contains supporting visual materials, such as images or diagrams with succinct captions, and other media, where appropriate.
  • The timescale for A-Class articles has also been changed to give more editors an opportunity to participate.
  • The six-monthly Coordinators' election has been moved back a month to avoid clashes with the holiday period. The sign-up period will run from 1–15 September and the elections themselves from 16–30 September.
  • The military land vehicles task force has been created.

Hi

I saw your message in my talk page. Could not reply earlier due to hectic schedule. I would like to know about the contributions to wiki that you have mentioned Interesting to note that there are so many activities , newsletters etc on India. Kbala1055 (talk) 03:10, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Computing banner

I checked your diff, but I was not sure what to look for. You will have to do some testing before publishing the changes. You can use a template sandbox for changes, and it's (sandbox's) talk page to see how it will look. I did noticed spaces and empty lines in the banner. The use of comments (<!-- -->) is to make sure that no empty lines/spaces show up in the display (and help format the code to a new line). Let me know if you have any questions. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 04:44, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok. I will clean up the empty spaces and empty lines... as of now it solved the main issue- No cats for the work groups if |class= is empty...The same issue exists for {{WP India}}.. If the |class= is empty, no categories are generated for the workgroup even if there is an importance parameter for the work group. With my changes in the computing banner, I tested the following scenarios:

  • Both class and importance are empty.
  • class is known and wg importance is unknown
  • class is unknown and wg importance is known.

-- Tinu Cherian - 04:51, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

I will look into this issue on the India banner. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 05:00, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Invitation

Hello again Tinu. I talked to Moondyne about whether we can continue with this. Back in April we had SatyrBot doing it, but we had only done it up to Category:Premiers of Tasmania so you don't have to redo the others. And the last time, you were moving the templates to the alternative names, but I think it will save resources to not bother moving this? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:37, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Do you mean to add {{WP Australia}} to ONLY articles in Category:Premiers of Tasmania or articles in all categories after Category:Premiers of Tasmania in User:Moondyne/AU_categories  ?
All the ones after PoT. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 08:12, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Btw moving Redirect Project banner templates ( like {{WPVN}} ) to actual Project banner template (like {{WikiProject Vietnam}} ) is the default feature of Kingbotk Plugin + AWB based bots.. May be they think Transclusion of the actual banner template is better than Transclusion of a redirect banner...I am not very sure how to avoid that, may be a regexp would work.. -- Tinu Cherian - 08:00, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
All the ones after PoT? Ok ... I will start the bot on these categories soon... I hope you guys have checked carefully for any false positive categories in the list.. ( I have good confidence in you after the vietnam tagging :D . I got practically no false tagging that time ). Cheers -- Tinu Cherian - 08:16, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I suggest we do cats only at this stage: leave the articles for now (Blnguyen will recall the kerfuffle with Aus Music article tagging). Also, I see there's a number of redlinked cats in my list now. Can the bot skip these associated talk pages? Moondyne 09:51, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

I recall there was that problem but if we check the cats against we should be fine I think. Which cat was it? I remember there was an error because we tagged all Oz Open champions when of course most of them were internationals. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:53, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
I am confused... You want me to tag {{WP Australia}} banner 'to category talk pages' OR 'article talk pages in your categories' ? The category list are fed manually to the bot and hence red linked cats can be avoided -- Tinu Cherian - 09:56, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
I am saying tag {{WP Australia}} banner 'to category talk pages' only. Blnguyen, do you agree? Moondyne 10:17, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
In the long run, the articles should be ok providing the categories themselves aren't too liberal. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:53, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
No problems, I thought Blnguyen wanted the articles to be tagged... I can tag the category talk pages in User:Moondyne/AU_categories also....The good thing of the my bot is that if it tags the category talk page, it can add |class=cat also if required ...-- Tinu Cherian - 10:23, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Please do - it will give me a chance to not get so frustrated when i see the red discussion headers on category pages and get annoyed with fellow australian editors who start categories and never actually put any australian project templates on SatuSuro 15:00, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Sure :)... I will run the bot soon on the category talk pages... -- Tinu Cherian - 15:33, 2 August 2008 (UTC)
Doing... : I have removed the non-existant cats and made this list User:TinucherianBot/Autotagg/WPAUS/cats . The categories in the list will be tagged as {{WP Australia|class=cat}} -- Tinu Cherian - 07:32, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Oh dear its going to the trouble to capitalise the tagged lower cases as well - cat to Cat - oh well - mental note for the ones not caught i must remember to use caps sigh SatuSuro 09:12, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Cat is the 'actual' option to be used, but most banner now supports both cat and Cat. My bot uses Kingboyk plugin for wikiproject tagging. Anyways I have left a msg here at the developer's page to avoid this unneccessary edits in future -- Tinu Cherian - 09:20, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok thanks for the xplanation SatuSuro 09:39, 4 August 2008 (UTC) From watching it the amount of time spent changing cat to Cat - i suppose if it was checking them in real time anyway it wouldnt matter - but if it was capable of doing it quicker without doing the change about 6 hours of running could have been saved :) SatuSuro 23:41, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Done : completed tagging of around 3900 categrories that was checked. -- Tinu Cherian - 04:10, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Brilliant job - but dont forget the possible suggestion that lots of time could be saved if the lower case/caps change was left out as part of the process SatuSuro 05:12, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you... There are 2 things the plugin does by default.

  • Move Redirect Project banner templates ( like {{WPVN}} ) to actual Project banner template (like {{WikiProject Vietnam}} )
  • cat, category are moved to Cat.

I have a workaround for the first one, but for the second one, I have requested the developer of the plugin for a change. It will save some time due to unneccassary edits -- Tinu Cherian - 06:42, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

WHACK!

Whacking with a wet trout or trouting is a common practice on Wikipedia when experienced editors slip up and make a silly mistake. It, along with sentencing to the village stocks, is used to resolve one-off instances of seemingly silly behavior amongst normally constructive community members, as opposed to long term patterns of disruptive edits, which earns warnings and blocks.

Example

Whack!
The above is a WikiTrout (Oncorhynchus macrowikipediensis), used to make subtle adjustments to the clue levels of experienced Wikipedians.
To whack a user with a wet trout, simply place {{trout}} on their talk page.

Grrrr.....:) Well Thank you for reminding me -- Tinu Cherian - 07:09, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

India

I am little dissatisfied with article India. It's T20 WC, 8 time olympic hockey champs (gold) are not written but they are present in pak...article. :-(
It's mineral reserves are also not elaborate. Instead the govt. section is very large.
And another query : Does the article need Pictures. I have a few...

  • 1 map (3d).gif but v.v.high resolution
  • 1 monsoon chart....animated (arival/depart) .gif (I like it)
  • Kapil Dev with WC 1983
  • Mountbatten with J Nehru...Transfer of power 1947.png

I did not ask in India talk page because it is often raided....Pl tell me the one to upload.
Thanks

India article is a Featured article ( noticed the golden star on the right top of the page ?) which means best articles in Wikipedia, as determined by Wikipedia's editors. Before being listed here, articles are reviewed at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates for accuracy, neutrality, completeness, and style according to our featured article criteria.

Hence additions to such an article should be done with utmost care...Mostly they have to be discussed at the talk page or may find your edit reverted by an admin... Feature articles pefers more of free images ( say you have created the image and giving it to WP ) . You can upload them at Wikipedia:Upload. Be sure to select the proper license tag while uploading the image.. Once uploaded, discuss at Talk:India and get the community approval. -- Tinu Cherian - 09:15, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Ah great, now from charge of "vandalism" we have an opinion of a "POV push." Does that include anyone who adds content that you do not agree with. That sounds like a POV push. BTW, do you know exactly what constitutes "vandalism" on wikipedia and I challenge you to describe my edits as vandalism by any stretch. (unless, of course, there is a serious POV "ownership" issue with this article. Puck42 (talk) 16:09, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

I have been editing wikipedia for a long time and this is the first time someone is calling my edits vandalism

If you have a problem with my edits discuss them on the talk page and explain SLOWLY why edits with references to cited sources constitute my personal opinion or vandalism.

Wikipedia is collaborative. You don't own the page. Again, if you have a problem with the content, discuss it without making up charges like "personal opinion" or vandalism. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Puck42 (talkcontribs) 16:06, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

My apologies if I have hurt you ... I had nothing to insult you. It may be just co-incidence that me and also DDS saw a similar pattern of editing between you and Raunak Roy. When you requested to delete RRaunak's talk page, like him , it is only natural that I too got suspicious. If you are not him, no need to worry at all, just ask DDS to do a Wikipedia:CheckUser on User:RRaunak. A checkuser is the proper course of action. This is the only way to prove it's a sockpuppeter. --ɔɹǝɐɯʎ!Talk 13:54, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Evidence.

This is the evidence i have so far: RRaunak's old page on this URL: [2] shows that his birthday is 1994, and it matches with User:DualHelix's template for his age. --ɔɹǝɐɯʎ!Talk 14:02, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

This is what I found on DH's page {{User:DualHelix/Age|day=26|month=10|year=1993}} and theRRaunak's old page says "I was Born on 26 October 1994 ...." -- Tinu Cherian - 14:09, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
Weird... I'll do a Outstanding Checkuser request because all of these accounts (RRaunak and friends) are too similar. --ɔɹǝɐɯʎ!Talk 23:20, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

British Bangladeshi

Hi there, I nominated the article British Bangladeshi some time ago as a Good Article, and would you be able to please review the page to see whether it falls into the criteria, or Review the page. Thank you. M Miah (talk) 12:53, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

great, thanks. I'm headed offline for sleep (I'm in NY) but will be around in the morning. Thanks again for your help with this. Have a good day. TravellingCari 03:28, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

No problems, Take your own time :) -- Tinu Cherian - 12:12, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Looked at the list and it's fine, thanks. I won't pretend to understand what it means when you said you "ran recursively on the categories you had given to find the sub.. sub categories" because I don't speak bot and that's why you and the other bot ops are much appreciated around here. Thanks again! TravellingCari 15:28, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I meant the list of cats , I made was from a recursive search on the sub-categories on the main catgeories you had given.

Done The cats were tagged. Please let me know if you want to tag the articles in the categories also -- Tinu Cherian - 09:48, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks so much, Tinu. I'm working through a list of the sub-cats because there were some articles in there that didn't belong. Once it's done, I'll see what needs to be done but thanks for the offer. I have another potential request, see subheader below for clarity purposes.

Another request?

I'm happy to take this to BOTREQ if you're busy but I thought since I was here, I'd ask. {{Canada-museum-stub}} was just created and before that, we just used the generic {{museum-stub}}. Someone ran AWB on some of the articles and the articles landed in their appropriate place, i.e. Category:Canada museum stubs. Is there a way to see if there are existing articles that are {{Canada-stub}} but are still using the general museum stub rather than the new Canada one? If this isn't possible, no worried and if you're busy, also no prob. Thanks again for your help above. TravellingCari 15:19, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

just bumping this since I'm not sure you saw it. TravellingCari 01:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Doing... : I guess you want to know if there are any articles that has {{museum-stub}} , that also has {{Canada-stub}} , right ? -- Tinu Cherian - 04:42, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Done : I collected the articles that transculded {{Canada-stub}} (500+) and also in Category:Canada museum stubs (56) and searched for {{museum-stub}} using AWB , but didnt find any. Hope thatz what you wanted to check -- Tinu Cherian - 05:00, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Yep that's it was just making sure we hadn't missed any. Thanks again for all your help with these projects. TravellingCari 14:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm puzzled!

I already blacklisted that one a while back. Will look into it, cheers --Herby talk thyme 06:56, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Ah - they are merely placing text which is not clickable - BL will not deal with that I'm afraid.--Herby talk thyme 06:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Whether not clickable or not, the link addition is just spam and content merely to make google Adsense revenue from traffic and click on the page. Very unencylopedic . but what amuses me is that they are continously adding from lots of different IP addresses many a times -- Tinu Cherian - 07:02, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Sure but the BL only prevents clickable links (anontalk are doing the same). The only thing is semi prot the page for a bit & see if they get bored. Ping me if you want that. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:37, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Yes. I guess I got it semi-protected once, the spammer came back with SPA account. I guess they are very serious to get their site listed in wikipedia :) . Can you atleast semi-protect it permanently ? -- Tinu Cherian - 08:44, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
S-prot for a week. Pages are not normally protected for long periods of time I'm afraid. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:27, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Ok. Kindly do the same...I am afraid the spammers may reappear after a week, given the previous exp with the same website. Any other possible suggestions ? -- Tinu Cherian - 09:31, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Bot request - tagging for WP

I have a bot request. Could your bot parse Category:Seattle Mariners players and tag the articles contained with in with {{WikiProject Seattle Mariners|auto=yes}}? Also, if there is already another WikiProject tag, can it copy over the assessment from the other project (if its there)? if you are going to keep the thread here, thats cool, just leave a {{talkback}} link on my talk page. Thanks! --Admrb♉ltz (tclog) 08:44, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Surely I can add {{WikiProject Seattle Mariners}} or {{WikiProject Seattle Mariners|class=|importance=}} only to articles in categories with my bot. Isn't "|auto=yes" used only when they are auto assessed ( not just adding banner ) by a bot  ? Ofcourse I can add {{WikiProject Seattle Mariners|class=Stub|auto=yes}} if running on a stub category. If you want the banner to be autoassessed based on other banners , I havent done a BRFAfor it yet, you may contact User talk:Richard0612 for the service of User:Bot0612. Meanwhile shall I add {{WikiProject Seattle Mariners}} to all articles in the category Category:Seattle Mariners players ?? -- Tinu Cherian - 09:09, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Go ahead and add just the banner with the class= and the importance= fields blank and leave the auto off. Thanks! --Admrb♉ltz (tclog) 15:17, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Doing... : Will update you when complete -- Tinu Cherian - 05:46, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I guess the WP 1.0 Assessment Category creation for your project is not done properly ( check this Category:Seattle Mariners articles by quality and Category:Seattle Mariners articles by importance . Probably I can also help in this like User:TinucherianBot/Category tree creation. Let me know if I need to fix the category tree. -- Tinu Cherian - 06:08, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Done : completed tagging of approx 500 articles. Had to skip around 30 articles in the category due to a plugin issue. Btw let me know if you want me to fix the WP 1.0 assessment category tree for the project -- Tinu Cherian - 11:57, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Please do fix the tree. --Admrb♉ltz (tclog) 12:06, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

It does not bother me, I asked you to add it, I just {{tnull}} them so they are smaller once I have read the message. --Admrb♉ltz (tclog) 15:03, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

User:Stepheng3 had already created the category tree before I could do today. But it needed a small fix from me and now it is working properly. I ran WP 1.0 bot manually and now it gets properly populated in Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Seattle Mariners articles by quality statistics -- Tinu Cherian - 05:20, 13 August 2008 (UTC)
Very cool, thank you again :) --Admrb♉ltz (tclog) 12:00, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

WP: INDIA

Hmm, I guess it is logical to join seeing as that I am an Indian. But being only 15, I have limited knowledge about the country. So I don't really think I would be of much use to the project. I might think of joining when I get my GCSEs out of the way and have time to do more thorough research into the various project topics. Thanks for the offer though, I just don't think I'm up to it YET. :-( A ProdigyTalk 10:56, 13 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks... Always happy to help as far as I can ! -- Tinu Cherian - 07:17, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Thankyou

Just a little note to say thankyou for participating in my successful RFA candidacy, which passed with 96 supports, 0 opposes, and 1 neutral. Wiki Project Computing Article Assessment

I am interested in helping out with the Article assessment, was wondering how I could get started and maybe some of the things you are looking for. Thanks SOL Basic 01:16, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

I've gone through and rated/classified a few articles today. If you have time would you look over them, and see if there is anything you disagree with. Adobe Acrobat, ActiveX, .QL, .NET Framework Thanks, SOL Basic 01:42, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Good enough ! But for ActiveX , it is not a stub but more of start class. you don't necessarily have to depend on other banner ratings , it may have been done very long back before the article was further expanded. You want to consider using WP:AWB and Kingbot plugin ? It will help you to do assessments faster. -- Tinu Cherian - 03:28, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

I would but I thought generally you were only approved when you had >500 mainspace edits. I am no where near that many, so I just do what I can the good old fashioned way. SOL Basic 01:37, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Well ya. As you gain more experience , more tools will be awailable to you which helps in easier editing. Let me know if you have any questions and doubts. I will be happy to help you if I know. Best wishes -- Tinu Cherian - 05:32, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Why do you post these impersonal notes to every person? Tombomp (talk/contribs) 21:06, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know your comments/concerns. If you are not aware, I am a 'so called RFA regular' since very long time, which means I regularly comment (support/oppose/b neutral) in the RFAs of admin hopefuls. The first thing I do whenever a new RFA comes is that I wish them good luck on their talk page, because I believe every candidature comes on the RFA arena for the betterment of Wikipedia and is a right candidate to win the RFA. If I am unfamiliar with the person personally or never interacted earlier with the candidate , I wait for comments for others. Meanwhile I research on the merits and demerits of the person, checking his edit history and his interactions with other Wikipedians. The first wishes I give to them may be a copy paste always ( because I have nothing else to say then) but my comments at the RFA are subjective to merits and demerits of the candidate ( you may check the RFAs I commented) . I dont support a person just because he may be likely to win. I stay neutral or oppose if I have my own concerns. And finally when the RFA ends successfully , I congratulate them on their well deserved adminship. In some cases, when the failed candidate feels dishearted by the outcome , I try to console and cheer them up to continue their valuable contributions to Wikipedia. I hope I have tried to explain what I generally do. Finally this is my style of doing ! If I am attempting any WP policy violation , you may raise it at ANI :). If you still have questions or concerns , kindly let me know, I will be happy to discuss it with you.. Thanks -- Tinu Cherian - 04:45, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
Oh ok. Sorry for the slightly rude earlier message. Just interested. Tombomp (talk/contribs) 10:10, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
