"respectively"

For some reason, Germans often translate "bzw" (beziehungsweise) into English as "respectively", though this can be inappropriate in various contexts... AnonMoos (talk) 08:13, 7 May 2023 (UTC)

(By the way, I have created a mode of Dwarven runes for the writing of Esperanto, which I call the Angerthas Zamenhof; it derives from the mode of Moria, in order to take advantage of a couple of extra runes only found there.) To answer your question...

Don't get me wrong, I think your edit was good and these edge cases really don't need to be brought up in that context, but to answer your question: Yes, you can have non-genetic direct relationships. For example, some languages can be a stratum of another language, such as the Semitic influence in Portuguese/Spanish, which results from a direct historical relationship, but not a genetic one. Arguably that sort of thing does exist in Altaic, so your edit actually removed ambiguity.

Just for another linguistics side comment, quite a lot of your pet peeves are examples of bad linguistics, you're making some progress on the far right column there!. :) Warrenmck (talk) 21:03, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Creoles are descended from languages but not considered (generally) child languages of all of its parents despite direct continuity, it's a fuzzy grey area and you'll probably get a few different answers from specialists, which I'm not for that topic. Warrenmck (talk) 21:19, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
