Meridian naming

The named meridians are proper nouns and like "Mountains" in Rocky Mountains and Pole in South Pole is capitalized, Meridian in Paris Meridian should be kept capitalized. I started a talk at Talk:Meridian (geography)#Dubious page moves. HTML2011 (talk) 21:52, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Considering the geographic area the Baltic languages are connected to (and unfortunately the trouble it tends to breed on here) and that the new user has about 5 edits Count du Monét (talk · contribs), yet throws around WP:OR, WP:SYN, WP:UNDUE, WP:NPOV and other terms like nothing, is it possible this user is a sock? I figured I would ask you what you thought since you have interacted with them and have a much longer history on the article (Indo-European languages) than I do. He iro 07:27, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Patterns in nature

Hi Tamfang,

of course you are correct, patterns in nature are universal and if taken in the widest sense, are of every type, found at all scales and would be detectable by every sense, human or artificial. Astronomers detect patterns in microwaves and infer structures that existed near the start of the universe. All this is granted, you are correct.

However... that poses a mighty problem for a mere article. If patterns cover every topic, every scientific law, every regularity of mathematics and natural philosophy, then they will fill a million books, or at least all of some millions of Wikipedia articles.

... Therefore, I hope you will grant me the minimal and reasonable request, that we attach, nay, reattach, a single criterion to limit the vast scope of this subject: we are writing in this modest article only about visible patterns. Just those are already a large array of phenomena, and the article can merely hint at them and at the literature that covers them; and of course, you are further correct in believing that the visual patterns themselves are merely the surface coverings, as it were, of deeper regularities in nature that often cause the visual effects that the article describes.

Please understand, therefore, that I do not disagree with your view - no-one familiar with the subject reasonably could do so - that patterns are more than visual. But unfortunately they are by the same token far, far more than visual: far too large indeed for a whole nest of Wikipedia articles.

Therefore I repeat my request: please may we have back the necessary constraint on the article, to patterns that are seen. The rest are of immense importance, and are covered, as best as may be, in all the other articles in Wikipedia. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:03, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Peerage categories

Category:Earldoms in the Peerage of Ireland and Category:Extinct earldoms in the Peerage of Ireland and their equivalents are normally used for peerages articles. The first category giews a good overview of all titles created while the other gives information on extinct titles. Tryde (talk) 07:17, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

What's your point?

When Category:Y is a member of Category:X, an article in Y is also considered to be in X, and therefore it is customary not to include any article in both X and Y.

Are you saying Category:Extinct earldoms in the Peerage of Ireland ought not to be a subcat of Category:Earldoms in the Peerage of Ireland? —Tamfang (talk) 07:33, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

What I am saying is that they both fill useful purposes. Category:Earldoms in the Peerage of Ireland gives an overview of all earldoms created in that peerage while the other category gives an overview of the extinct ones. With your system we lose the overview of all earldoms created. We have had Category:Earldoms and Category:Extinct earldoms for many years (and I am now diffusing them) so I don't see why this should change. Tryde (talk) 08:39, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

House of FitzJames: Scotland missing from armorial template?

And for your question on why the tesseractihemioctachoron (the 4D tetrahemihexahedron) is counted as regular: it's obviously not regular, but (1) is a faceting of the 16-cell, which is regular and (2) doesn't fit well anywhere else, unlike thah which can easily go with the quasiregulars (which is where Bowers places it). Another point to take note of is that truncating and rectifying the tesseractihemioctachoron also lead to uniform polytopes. Double sharp (talk) 09:47, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Disestablishments of WWI‎

Hi Tamfang, I'm working on a new royals/heraldry/houses/flags &c project User:Stephen2nd/Disestablishments of WWI‎, and could do with some of your expertise. It needs a new Wikitable for the Austrian/Russian/Ottoman sections, as they do not have individual heads and houses, like the German Empire sample. I propose a top "kindom/state" section, with three boxes for arms, map, flag. With two tables side by side, due to the size/length of these empires. It needs an appropriate title, and especially lead-descriptions of each Empire. Also all the sections filling in. Do you think it will fit into one article, or should it be split into each empire, or German/Austrian as (WWI or 1918)-European and Russia/Ottoman as (WWI or 1918)-non-European? Shovel ready

Get where you're coming from at Shovel ready (and I certainly won't stand in the way of a holy mission) but the resulting intro wasn't really accurate. It seems to redraft the para as though the term is commonly (more commonly than reality) used to describe projects that meet that criteria. It's most definitely a political catch-phrase or neologism which is used by politicians and media but not many others, and only in fairly specific circumstances. Is there a way we could redraft it to get the proper context while still complying with your holy mission? (Love where Holy Mission links to btw!) Hi Tamfang. This is going to sound like needless nit-picking, for which I apologise in advance, but a couple of your recent responses at the Helpdesk have been a little... jaded, perhaps, is the right word? I'm thinking of edits like this, this and this. New editors come to the helpdesk precisely because they aren't sure about how Wikipedia works; dismissing them with "*sigh* Use the talkpage" as though they ought to know better isn't terribly... helpful. I realise that you probably didn't intend to sound patronising or flippant, but like many more experienced editors, you've probably answered these questions a thousand times and have gotten tired of trotting out the rote responses - the important thing is to remember that each individual newbie has only asked the question once, and doesn't realise that there's an obvious answer. Your grandfather's story implies that the village was not named until some rich people rode by without looking; how likely is that? German rank and noble styles in orders of precedence

Hi Tamfang, I have a problem with creating an info-box on the “rank and noble styles” of the emperors, kings, princes, grand dukes and dukes &c of the German monarchy. I would like to have the German translations with each title, mediatized nobility refs, with a (1st) image section for “crowns,” and ending with a notes section for such explanations. The problems are creating the sections for the “princes” titles. Also, fully covering all the necessary topics relevant and compatible with the List of German monarchs in 1918‎. I am also compiling text to accompany this section; obviously this depends on the finished info-box. I am storing these references in Sandbox User:Stephen2nd/Prussian Empire. I hope to add about 30 pages of images, trees &c to this (Empire) article, as a template for other 1918 Empires, re our earlier discussions. Hope you are having a nice time of year.
