Hi @Styyx:! Please, don't revert this page. The section of the table is still on the work (and isn't easy, by the way). Also, the information is already on the pages of Bulgarian wiki (which has an impressive amount of pages related to German nobility). I'm translating and compiling the info on the table. The sources cited there are also at the end of the page. I don't see a problem or why do you say it is unsourced. Should it have more footnotes? Please, explain yourself. DYK for Geliyoo[edit]

On 6 October 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Geliyoo, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the search engine of Geliyoo was found to be retrieving its results from Google, in contrast to the company's claims of spending 10 million Turkish liras on development? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Geliyoo. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Geliyoo), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

die boom[edit]

Dag Styyx, I guess my underlying problem with the way you mention the "unknown age" is that your text mentions Volkskrant, which to me is irrelevant to the article = it is simply one reference.

Let's discuss this! jw (talk) 22:11, 6 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jwikip. The source says "En deze staat al meer dan 29 jaar – hoe oud de boom precies is, kon ik nergens terugvinden – stilletjes op zijn plek de boel in zich op te nemen", which would roughly translate to "And this one [the tree] has been there for more than 29 years [the time since the accident when the article was written] – how old the tree exactly is, I couldn't find anywhere – quietly in its place taking it all in". It doesn't say that the age of the tree is unknown (likely planted in the 60s when the area was being built), the writer just says that she couldn't find it. ~StyyxTalk? 09:11, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marginataen! Copied from a previous answer: it's done via IABot. If you click on the link you will have to type the article name. You can also go to the article history and click the "Fix dead links" found at the external links section. In both cases, you have to tick the "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" box before proceeding. It'll take 20 to 90 seconds, depending on the amount of references, and then the edit will be automatically saved. ~StyyxTalk? 11:53, 11 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

About edits you made to Turkish Airlines fleet[edit]

Hi, Styyx. While you are correct that Planespotters.net is user-generated and may not be reliable, your source (investor.turkishairlines.com) is self-published and too closely associated with the subject, which can also be argued as not reliable.

Planespotters.net is widely used as the main source of an airline's fleet data on Wikipedia, including on Cathay Pacific fleet, American Airlines fleet, Delta Air Lines fleet, All Nippon Airways fleet, Emirates fleet, British Airways fleet, and many more. So I think it's fair to say it's an accepted source of reasonably reliable data, especially when combined with the airline's own published fleet data and, if available, national registry databases. Having data from Turkey's national registry would be ideal, but I don't have such access.

In the case of Turkish Airlines, the main problem I have with using its own published data is that it encompasses that of its sub-brand AnadoluJet and does not make any distinction. For example, your source claims Turkish operates a fleet of 92 Boeing 737-800, which isn't accurate as it encompasses that of its sub-brand AnadoluJet. The same AnadoluJet fleet of 52 Boeing 737-800 is also listed separately on its own Wikipedia page. This is misleading as it appears Turkish Airlines, along with AnadoluJet, has a combined fleet of 144 Boeing 737-800, which is false. Turkish has 40 and AnadoluJet has 52. They have a combined 92. The A320neo fleet has the same problem. Turkish Airlines does not operate any A320neo directly; AnadoluJet does. But you added A320neo to Turkish's fleet based on the combined fleet data on investor.turkishairlines.com.

To be consistent, I believe you need to either separate the fleet into two, which was what I did and believe to be the preferred method, OR combine them under Turkish Airlines, specify a portion of the fleet operates under the AnadoluJet's brand, and delete/redirect the fleet section on AnadoluJet's Wikipedia page. Otherwise, the information on Turkish Airlines fleet is simply wrong. The problem with the latter is I don't believe there's a precedent for doing so. For example, Scoot's fleet is not combined with its parent Singapore Airlines's fleet. But, of course, they are not the same as Scoot is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, while AnadoluJet is a brand (not a company) of Turkish Airlines.

Either way, I believe the current Turkish Airlines fleet page needs to be updated one way or another to be accurate. What do you think? Johnnycorns5354 (talk) 08:49, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Johnnycorns5354. I'm afraid using planespotters.net for this specific article is a no-go. The articles you've mentioned are regular articles, while this is a good article, which requires reliable sources, and planespotters.net just isn't that (per the discussions I linked in the edit summary). Very technically speaking, aircraft operated by AJ are a part of the Turkish Airlines fleet. As you said, AnadoluJet isn't a different airline, it's a brand that just operates under that name, with the same IATA and ICAO codes as THY (unlike SG/Scoot, where both have their own codes). We don't even know if AJ has ever made any profit as its numbers are included in the THY report because it's not a different company: it's the same. There is no precedent as I don't believe we had any (large) airline do something like this before. Historically, the fleet section at THY has included aircraft operated by AJ. The revision you edited did have a note saying that the number excluded aircraft of AJ, which I have removed as it's false. ~StyyxTalk? 10:47, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Styyx. Fair enough, but I think there should at least be a note on Turkish Airlines fleet to clarify that it is inclusive of AnadoluJet's to avoid any confusion. Because as I said, now it appears Turkish Airlines has 92 Boeing 737-800 and AnadoluJet has 52, for a combined 144, which is false.
And speaking of good articles, I noticed all of the articles I mentioned are list-class articles as it is the norm for Wikipedia pages about an airline's fleet. The Emirates fleet article, for example, is a list-class article with three main sections: current fleet, historical fleet, and fleet development. This is very much comparable to the Turkish Airlines fleet article in question. Therefore, it might be more appropriate to reclassify it as list-class. Would you agree? Is there a precedent for classifying an airline's fleet article as anything other than list-class? Johnnycorns5354 (talk) 11:55, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Johnnycorns5354 I will work on the article later today per this discussion. The class thing is complicated. Some articles in Category:Lists of aircraft by operator are classified as a list, some of which you've listed above, while some, like Alaska Airlines fleet, Air New Zealand fleet, Singapore Airlines fleet, Southwest Airlines fleet and Thai Airways International fleet, are not. I asked this at WikiProject Aviation last month and only got a single response about it not looking like a list. This was at peer review before the nomination, where I told that it was for GA/FA, and of course at the GA review itself. The two users didn't mention that this should be a list instead. So, it's pretty complicated, to say the least. ~StyyxTalk? 12:19, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

License for uploading press photos from 1996[edit]

I'm going to ask 2 questions, the first one is complicated so I'll ask it separately.

I'm looking for a proper license agreement so I can upload 1996 non-US press photos to Commons. This group of photos is part of the "secret diplomacy" of a Taiwanese government plane secretly going to Kyiv, Ukraine in April 1996. These are a bit important and I need to say it first in order to research if there has a correct license.

The photo is attached to the pay-per-view website of the United Daily News. I speculate that this should not be likely with non-US works from 1996, but I don't know if Taiwan is a signatory region of the Uruguay Round Agreement. Note that Taiwan is generally not recognized as a sovereign state by international organizations. So it shouldn't be possible to use protocols published before 1996?

Then I plan to change it to fair use and upload it to the English Wikipedia. This set of photos is treated as historical photos, and it is theoretically impossible to find photos of the same period. My assumption is that since it's secret diplomacy, there won't be much news coverage in the media. This is within the scope of fair use, so what license agreement do I need to use?

A long list of questions. Say it if you know it. I have a second question to ask later. Wu Peihao←→Talk 11:51, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

[5]-- Wu Peihao←→Talk 12:02, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again Wu Peihao. The reason this question took me a while to answer is because I don't really know it myself. Almost all the pictures I upload are taken by me, so I don't really work with licenses. I've sent a message on the Wikipedia Discord server about your question and haven't gotten a reply for 2+ hours. I think the best thing for you is to post your question(s) on the Help Desk of Commons or ask it on the talk page of an experienced Commons user, because I can't really find it. ~StyyxTalk? 15:02, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, thanks for the long research. You could wait within 24 hours. Also, help desk is not available. As English isn't a native language to me. So think I could just upload the photos by fair use. -- Wu Peihao←→Talk 15:08, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Better source needed template[edit]

A paragraph in this article is marked "Needs a better source". I checked the contents and found the text is from a Chinese diplomat's memoir, and that book is a reliable source. So what is the way to meet the editor's request? Wu Peihao←→Talk 12:11, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wu Peihao! The best thing to do is to ask the editor who has added the tag. I don't know their reason for adding it, and if you know it, you can make some changes depending on their response. ~StyyxTalk? 12:26, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'll make a try. Also, the first question needs a solution. -- Wu Peihao←→Talk 12:30, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'll just replace the source and remove the template. -- Wu Peihao←→Talk 12:33, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Primary and secondary sources[edit]

After reading the guideline, I would like to ask if the diplomats' memoirs are secondary sources? In addition, I also concluded from the text below that "University Press" is a reliable source. Therefore, embassies Notes: An Ambassador s diplomatic life of the educated youth segment is published by Nankai University Press, which belongs to the secondary source. Wu Peihao←→Talk 09:57, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wu Peihao If it's written by the person the memoir is about, then it's similar to an autobiography and not a secondary source. They are likely to be reliable, but not independent and thus a primary source. ~StyyxTalk? 10:29, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Then this memoir is published by a well-known newspaper, which is a reliable source. Is it a secondary source at the same time?-- Wu Peihao←→Talk 11:46, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wu Peihao So it's written by person X, and is about Person X, right? The person who wrote it talks about themselves? ~StyyxTalk? 13:26, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Taiwan-Ukraine relations[edit]

Some questions are trapped by the grammatical problems. Help fast.

  1. Latvian model or Latvian mode?
  2. I used the word until in the paragraph, it says "However, until 2013, Ukraine did not respond to this request." But my meaning was in 2013, Ukraine still doesn't respond to it. Until becomes the opposite meaning.

Wu Peihao←→Talk 13:37, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wu Peihao
  1. Depends on context, but if Latvia did something and others have started to do the same it's probably "Latvian model".
  2. "As of 2013, Ukraine has not responded to the request." You can use {{As of}} if you want to. ~StyyxTalk? 13:40, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A new problem. "Alarmed by the "Latvian model", the Chinese government made representations to the Ukrainian diplomatic unit and received an immediate promise from the Ukrainian side that there would be no consulate situation like in Latvia." How should I describe that the case consulate wouldn't occur as China receive the promise (Ukraine wouldn't do it), also hinting that there was a Taiwanese consulate in Latvia, in contrary? -- Wu Peihao←→Talk 13:45, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
I came here after Styyx asked for help on WP:DISCORD. First off, thanks for working on this article - I think a lot of diplomatic articles are underedited or become a hub for promotional/non-POV/poorly written content.
Getting to your question: I think the best way would be to mention the existence of a Taiwanese consulate/diplomatic mission in Lithuania. (I am a bit confused, however; isn't the Taiwanese Representative Office in Latvia a de-facto embassy?) Like this:
After the establishment of a Taiwanese consulate/diplomatic mission/representative mission/de-facto embassy in Latvia, (whatever verbiage you think is best) the Chinese government expressed their alarm about a potential "Latvian model" (you could also use "Latvian precedent) and received an immediate promise from the Ukrainian diplomatic unit that there would not be a similar situation there.
MSG17 (talk) 14:45, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see that you are talking about the consulate established in 1992, which acted officially despite Taiwan and Latvia not having recognized diplomatic relations. Sorry, I was mistaken. Yes, use "consulate". MSG17 (talk) 15:07, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @MSG17: So you're from Discord channel of Wikipedia? A consulate is the official name, not an so-called de-facto embassy. Take note of that the incident was in 1992, the consulate caused China's move on Ukraine.-- Wu Peihao←→Talk 15:57, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I was mistaken about that point, I mistook it for the current Taiwanese office in Latvia. I corrected myself below. And yes, I came here from the unofficial Wikimedia discord server. MSG17 (talk) 16:07, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Go on. I try to catch the clue. However, what I focused on the Consulate of Taiwan in 1992 in the article. My impression is that the consular relationship seems to imply that Latvia recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign state. Here I would like to make it simple and let that sentence imply that the Latvian model occurred earlier, resulting in Chinese follow-up and Ukraine's promise not to have a consulate.-- Wu Peihao←→Talk 16:09, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also, here. 拉脫維亞模式 is a term using on the two sources of the article. I consider it should be translated as "Latvian mode" or "Latvian model".-- Wu Peihao←→Talk 16:16, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I found an English source (Taiwan and Post-Communist Europe: Shopping for Allies, 2007, Routledge) that uses "Latvian model". Mode doesn't make sense here. MSG17 (talk) 16:21, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Could you paste the link? To the comment, I thought the word mode and model are synonym. -- Wu Peihao←→Talk 16:25, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for the late replies, I will not be able to reply on a timely basis to queries on Wikipedia right now. Here are some links: (Google Books, Routledge (both have limited previews, but one of the chapters is itself named the "Latvian model")). Also, mode is more like setting a device into a certain mode to do a specific task (like how radios can be in transmit/broadcast/send and receive modes depending on what you need to do with it). I was wondering if it has something to do with the Wikipedia article that I am expanding? So should I write less, so as not to damage the bilateral relations between them? But I consider it has already happened. The obscure history should be recorded, whether good or bad, and there are already sources of papers and news. -- Wu Peihao←→Talk 10:54, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wu Peihao Yeah, it's super confusing. I looked at the explanation in the template. The date should indeed be 30 April 2009. You can use |orig-date=Book published in 2008, since that's the original date, but also |publication-date=2008 since that's the date it was published. Usage of |publication-date= is not explained at all in the documentation, so you can pick one of the two (but I don't think it should be both at once). Very confusing. ~StyyxTalk? 17:00, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • So, the 9th reference in the article has two different dates.
I used date and publication-date when citing the news site. The original time is August, 1996 (on the site below), and the online version is published in March, 2022. I guessed date is used for the earliest time and publication-date is the time that the online news is uploaded on the site. Later, I will test if orig-date work for this, maybe date doesn't need to be used. -- Wu Peihao←→Talk 22:23, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wu Peihao, hahahaha. The Wikibreak is unrelated to this; I just have some exams coming up. For the archives, well, IABot does not work right now. There is a bug report here. Waiting for that to be resolved. ~StyyxTalk? 16:06, 31 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sandwich[edit]

This is what the images and infobox look like on my screen. See the sandwich? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:09, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Blaze Wolf Shit. There is no TOC for you, you have Vector 2022? Horizontal creates no problem for me, while vertical creates a different sandwich. ~StyyxTalk? 16:15, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Styyx: Yes I am using Vector 2022. While both horizontal and vertical create sandwiches for me, vertical creates much less of a sandwich (For both of us as well). Unfortunately no matter where I add {{clear}} it adds a crap ton of whitespace. Maybe we should raise this at WP:VPT? Cause clearly this is a major issue. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:20, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Blaze Wolf Yep, this is a big problem. There are probably thousands of articles that have an image on the left just after the infobox. In the old Vector those are saved by the TOC but Vector 2022 kills them all. Thank goodness it's not the default skin yet. Should be discussed at the village pump or WP:VECTOR2022. The sandwich I have at vertical is not terrible so I think it can stay like that for now. You have problems at SoloTürk as well I assume? ~StyyxTalk? 16:27, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I do, however that sandwich isn't nearly as bad, and could be made better by simply reducing the size of the image. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:28, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've mentioned it at WP:VECTOR2022 since I'd say this is a big enough of an issue that Vector 2022 should not be made default until this is fixed. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:16, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is a bit odd.[edit]

Hi Styyx, when I was looking back over the history of a draft (Draft:Sweta_Rai), I saw this simulated AfC note, posted by its draft creator with your signature. Presumably they simply copied the comment from this AfC decline of Draft:Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile by yourself and changed the words, and they did fix the signature in their next edit, so no actual attempt to pretend to be you. However, your comment also mentioned possible socking by the creator of Draft:Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile, and there are some close similarities between that user and the user who copied your note to Draft:Sweta Rai. Do you recall whose sock you thought it might have been? Best, --bonadea contributions talk 15:31, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Bonadea. I've looked around a bit to get my memory running again. Draft:Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile was created by LittleNirvana (talk · contribs), who I already suspected of paid editing due their edits at Dream Games. They were blocked by GeneralNotability for that reason in September (hence the ping in my AfC decline). The draft was submitted later by WikiwikiTIKA (talk · contribs), who also got blocked for being the sock of LittleNirvana. Then it got submitted again by Sethins (talk · contribs), which made me assume that it was also a sock. I don't exactly remember why I didn't push it further with an SPI or something. The user who accidentally added my signature can also be a sock: see Draft:Christina Pascucci, or at least from the same company or something. ~StyyxTalk? 16:33, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Yes, I think there is a connection there. I'll look more closely at it tomorrow. --bonadea contributions talk 21:52, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting your wrong removal of content and manual of style ignorance is not "ownership of an article". ~StyyxTalk? 18:09, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As per our guidelines, Anadolujet has its own main article and therefore the fleets are not to merged but listed separately. This is the case with all airline subsidiaries, the state of the AOC is not relevant for this. This has been maintained for several years (including Turkish Airlines until your recent edits) and there’s no reason why your article should be an exception - hence claiming ownership. Best regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:A61:3AED:1301:D983:EEA9:4295:9ABC (talk) 20:28, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's... not a subsidiary. It is a part of Turkish Airlines. It's the same company. ~StyyxTalk? 20:33, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK so we are not coming out of this together. I'll open a discussion on the Aviation WikiProject and ask for the article to be protected in the mean time. ~StyyxTalk? 20:35, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As I stated this is not about corporate structure. Anadolujet has an independent article on this Wiki and this is why the fleet charts are not allowed to be merged. We split them like this ages ago. Additionally Anadolujet is about to receive an independent AOC which makes this discussion obsolete.
WP:CRYSTAL. There are plans and it might happen. The same plans existed in 2020 but were called off. There is nothing preventing the same from happening again. ~StyyxTalk? 20:41, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The rule about the independent article still applies. Unless Anadolujet does no longer have its own main article their fleet cannot be integrated into TKs chart. It can be discussed if this should be changed - and it hasn’t in the last 10 years I’m on here - but you cannot change it at will for an article that you are the primary contributor for. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:A61:3AED:1301:D983:EEA9:4295:9ABC (talk) 20:46, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

COI vs DRAFTOBJECT[edit]

Hello Styyx.

I just saw your draftification.

I wrote a fair bit of DRAFTIFY including DRAFTIBJECT. It was not meant to conflict with WP:COI. However, I have not seen any real cases, until this one. I think the writing at DRAFTIFY remains mostly silent with respect to WP:COI. Maybe it should explicitly defer to WP:COI where there is COI.

What if the author denies having a COI. Should it go to AfD? If the author has a COI, then their mainspace move and all mainspace edits are not allowed. I agree. SmokeyJoe (talk) 13:11, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SmokeyJoe. My understanding of DRAFTOBJECT is that an article can only be draftified once and once only, since it doesn't say anything like "with the exception of...." and explicitly states that the author is also allowed to object, even though I really think that COI is an exception. I remember having a few other cases like this last summer when I was still an active NPP/AfC reviewer here, though I don't think I can dig them back up.
When an author denies COI and there are no other "suspicious" things then we should probably AGF and send it to AfD. In this case though, I haven't seen the author confirm or deny anything (correct me if I'm wrong though), so that mostly leaves it up to judgement. I sent this one back due to possible sockpuppetry/block evasion concerns; see my talk archive. I think this is a blocked UPE continuing their work. I was actually writing up an SPI when you messaged me. ~StyyxTalk? 13:48, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I made this edit, which removes the apparent conflict. I am not sure what should happen if the COI is denied. AfD? I’d say wait to see some examples before trying to document good practices. SmokeyJoe (talk) 08:08, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
