WP:AFC Helper News[edit]

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Request for Help[edit]

Hi Styyx. Thank you for "rescuing sources" on my new article, Continental Divide Trail Society. I assume this means that with the information you added to the reference links, if the original webpages move or are deleted, that the link will go to an archive? If that is true, that is awesome, and thank you! (I just ran into two reference links that I only added a couple of weeks ago -- and they are already dead because the website is being redone.) I wanted to apply the "rescue sources" to my other articles. I looked up "rescue sources" on Wikipedia and didn't find any information. I am wondering if you could teach me how to do this, or else run this program on my other Wiki articles, which are: Pacific Crest Trail Association and Lowell Thomas Travel Writing Awards. Thank you! Geophiliac (talk) 14:35, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oops. this is embarassing: the correct name of one of my new pages (as written in my post above) is correctly: Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Awards. Geophiliac (talk) 14:45, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Geophiliac! Archiving links indeed means that if the original link is deleted, there is still a backup. You need to add the following parameters to the {{Cite web}} (or one similar) template: |archive-date = |archive-url = |url-status = . You can get an archive link via this website and add everything manually, but if you think that that's too much work (which it is xD), then you can use IABot. Make sure the "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" box is ticked. The bot takes some time to make the edit, generally 30-90 seconds, though if you want to archive 200 links at once like I did here, the waiting time can be around 7-8 minutes. I'd strongly recommend using it however. ~StyyxTalk? ^-^ 17:31, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much! I will try to implement that -- I've never run a bot before, but I am interested in learning this stuff! Thanks again! -- Geophiliac (talk) 23:37, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just a followup -- I successfully used it on another page that I did not start, but am interested in helping to maintain -- and it worked and was very easy! Thanks so much for this info. What a valuable app! Geophiliac (talk) 02:01, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Muharrem Aslan[edit]

Hi Styyx, My draft/article Muharrem Aslan has been declined. I don’t know what to do in this stage because I don’t have any other sources than I provided ones at the moment. SBS Radio is this not a reliable source? There are all information about Muharrem Aslan on this radio interview. and The Blue Mountain Gazette other source that provided.

Kind Regards user:dreamboy3143— Preceding unsigned comment added by Dreamboy3143 (talkcontribs) 09:40, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dreamboy3143 Relax; you don't need to send me all these messages, and I don't need the 15 notifications that come with them. Regarding the draft I declined, I still don't see how this person meets the general notability guideline. Both the SBS and The Blue Mountain sources aren't considered significant, as one is an interview and the other is only a mention of him.
Also, I'd like to ask if you have any connection to the subject itself, given that your editing profile consists of almost solely edits to the particular draft. If so, then you'll have to disclose such conflict of interest. Thank you. ~StyyxTalk? ^-^ 12:23, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ingrian grammar[edit]

Hi, I think I'm not familiar enough with how this works, but considering the article concerns a spoken language (as such the information given should be regarded as verifiable with the speakers, much like Finnish grammar or Komi grammar) and since almost all information given (with the exception of some phonological information, which is referenced in the main article) has been sourced within the further reading, does this really qualify as an unsourced article? Or is it customary to use "bibliography"/"sources" rather than "further reading" instead? Thadh (talk) 20:48, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thadh (Took me a bit long to write this :D). I advise you to carry over the references from the main article to the draft whenever possible. I'd also love to see {{Sfn}} (shortened footnote template) being used considering it's referenced by the two books. The negative side of simply having a "Bibliography" section at the very end with a few sources—without footnotes—is that it's impossible to know which text (or table) is sourced by which book and on which page of the book the information can be found. The featured article of the day of 6 March uses the Sfn template for sourcing. If you need any guidance or help, you can take a look at that article. I myself will check on that status as much as possible. As I said in the comment, the topic is notable; and I would immediately move it back to the mainspace when the sourcing gets fixed. ~StyyxTalk? ^-^ 21:03, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It seems a little pointless to source general information like inflectional suffixes inline though, that information could be found in any book on the topic, and in all four that are given (of course, since there's dialectal variation, most sources won't fully agree as to the essive ending for instance, but that is covered by the introductory statement explaining the article is based on Junus' literary language, described in the grammar book linked first in the bibliography). I've given a few inline references for a little less general statements, does that look okay? Thadh (talk) 21:38, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Deletion of "The Pakistan Daily" article[edit]

Hi. I saw that you have put a tag of Proposed Deletion on my article The Pakistan Daily stating that it needs reliable, independent coverage which I think it already got and I have added a few references as well. Pakistan Daily has been quoted and given coverage by Hindustan Times, Business Standard, The Indian Express and numerous other international media channels so it clearly shows that The Pakistan Daily is a renowned and trusted media channel which is used as a reliable news source by different international media channels. Edit summary clarification for Ghost of Kyiv?[edit]

Could you expound on your concern expressed in a recent edit at Ghost of Kyiv? This text was removed from the article lead:

The Ghost of Kyiv is part of Ukrainian online propaganda that has largely focused on heroes and martyrs which has in turn, dramatized tales of Ukrainian fortitude and Russian aggression.[1]

When that was removed, your edit summary read, "This isn't what the source says, nor is it how a lead section works". As far as I can tell the text removed is pretty close though, perhaps too close if anything. The source writes...

Instead, Ukraine’s online propaganda is largely focused on its heroes and martyrs, characters who help dramatize tales of Ukrainian fortitude and Russian aggression

What did you mean by that edit summary? Am I overlooking some obvious WP:SYNTH or something here? I also missed the specific issue with the lead. --N8 04:59, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

References

  1. ^ Thompson, Stuart; Alba, Davey. "Fact and Mythmaking Blend in Ukraine's Information War". NY Times. Retrieved 10 March 2022. The Ghost of Kyiv may be a myth
The particular text was added with this edit, where the user says that they "reworded the introduction to better reflect the reality of the situation."
The source indeed starts with saying that the Ghost of Kyiv may be a myth, but later on it changes its subject to the online propaganda of Ukraine, and notes the quote you've mentioned above. Problem: it doesn't say the Ghost of Kyiv is a part of it, which was added to the lead, it only makes a generalization of Ukraine's online campaign.
A lead section, according to the second sentence of MOS:LEAD, "serves as an introduction to the article and a summary of its most important contents", and adding things in the lead that aren't mentioned in the body really isn't how that section works. ~StyyxTalk? ^-^ 14:11, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Odd Notification?[edit]

Hello PerryPerryD! Since you aren't a part of the autopatrolled group, every page you create—regardless of the namespace it's in—has a button that shows up for reviewers and admins that says "Mark this page as patrolled". This is quite crucial for actual articles and is mostly used there, but I tend to not able to resist pressing it whenever I see (when it's appropiate). xD Here is my patrol log in case you were wondering. ~StyyxTalk? ^-^ 17:06, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like to complete a GAN about Turkey?[edit]

Hello,

I saw you just edited Hamitabat power station so I wondered whether you might consider completing Talk:Electricity sector in Turkey/GA5. The original reviewer is unable to continue but has done a great job so far, so I guess it would not take too much of your time. By the way the previous reviewer and myself are both native English speakers so you don't need to comment on prose as he did that already, and not compulsory to write your suggestions with perfect grammar. Chidgk1 (talk) 18:37, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again Chidgk1! My hometown is relatively close to Hamitabat (the blurry and grainy picture in the article is mine xD), so I tend to come back to it from time to time. I have never reviewed a GAN, but was planning to, and I guess a mostly finished GAN—and one related to Turkey—seems quite the perfect opportunity to start.
The GAN seems quite confusing to me with the table. From what I can understand, the original reviewer wasn't able to finish it, and there have been two others who have provided a second opinion (most issues have been addressed as far as I can see). If you want I can pick this up I think. ~StyyxTalk? ^-^ 19:33, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging pages for deletion[edit]

Hello, Styyx,

An essential step in the process of deletion on Wikipedia is notifying the page creator that an article, template or category has been tagged for deletion, whether CSD, PROD or AFD/TFD/CFD/etc. You need to do this every time you tag a page for deletion. I see you use Twinkle, which is great, so please check your Twinkle Preferences and make sure a) the "Notify page creator" box is checked and b) go into the CSD section and make sure ALL of the speedy deletion criteria are checked off. If you do this, then Twinkle will post these notices for you. But if Twinkle doesn't, then you must go and inform the page creator that you tagged the page for deletion. Content creators build this project and they should be informed if one of their pages will be deleted, especially if there is an ongoing problem, they need to know about it before they create future articles with similar problems. Many thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 23:16, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Also, Twinkle has a feature that will create deletion logs for you which some editors find very handy to both track the taggings that they do and, if a tag has been removed, learn if there is a problem in how they are judging some pages. It can be useful and you can set that up in your Twinkle Preferences, too. Liz Read! Talk! 23:16, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Liz! The box is automatically ticked when I load TW, and apparently sometimes it fails to properly notify the creator? I hadn't noticed this actually. Yesterday I CSD'ed and PROD'ed a few articles, all of which seem to have sent a notification: 1, 2, 3, 4. The article I just CSD'ed also sent a notification. Weird stuff I guess. xD ~StyyxTalk? 21:10, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Notifying the page creator is not required; it is strongly encouraged, but then you must go and inform the page creator (emphasis added) and the like are just flat-out wrong. Primefac (talk) 10:43, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Following this after seeing the note on Liz' page. Liz, I didn't realize you have pings turned off, but a few times in the past that you've made posts like these on talkpages I watch, I've {{tpw}}'d that you should start a discussion at the village pump if you think deletion-tag notifications should be required across the board. I'd (re)iterate that now. I think that would be far preferable to hashing this out one at a time on different users' talk pages. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 10:50, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'm wrong about "must" but I think there is a fine line between "should" and "strongly encouraged". I feel strongly about this so I guess I added the emphasis on my own, I'm sorry about that but we have a problem with some long-time editors who don't use Twinkle and never inform editors about any deletion taggings at all, not PRODs, AFDs or CSDs. It was so common, I went to Fastily and asked him if he could alter his bot to inform editors who were not notified that a page they created had been PROD'd so that's happening now and I believe SDZeroBot informs page creators when one of their articles has been nominated at AFD when the nominator neglects to inform them. But we shouldn't need bots to take care of actions that page taggers and nominators should do on their own. I don't see any negatives to informing editors about deletion taggings but I will curb my use of the word "must". It's just so easy with Twinkle, there is no reason I can think of NOT to post a notification.
As far as your settings go, Styyx, it sounds like you have things set up, so I apologize if I came on strongly, as if you hadn't taken care of things. I know that there are a few criteria, like G7s, that Twinkle, for some reason, fails to post notifications on even if you have checked off all of the criteria in your Preferences. I guess the developers concluded that if an editor has blanked a page, they don't need to be informed that the page has been deleted, but, as I say, I would say that it doesn't matter what the criteria is. I wouldn't be surprised if there are other criteria that Twinkle just skips as well. It handles things fine most of the times. Liz Read! Talk! 22:02, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Page deletion[edit]

Hi Styyx, the page was saved in the page instead of the sandbox. How can I delete the page? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by BertieTheBrain (talkcontribs) 20:50, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tokat airport[edit]

Hi... Thanks for your updates to Tokat Airport.
It's generally best to say something once and only once on a wikipedia page. As an example, there is a side panel which mentions the runway, its direction and its length in metres and feet. This type of side panel is standard for (almost) all airports on English language wikipedia. Because this side panel already contains the length of the runway, stating the runway length in the History section becomes repetition. Yes, we could repeat it, but we are using more words than necessary to give out information. Thus, maybe better to keep the runway data in just the side panel - in the same place as all other airports, and remove it from the History section. The History section is important - but it should be for information notable about the History rather than anything else. Equally, information relating to the History of an airport should go into the History section, instead of both the Introduction and the History section.
Additionally, airport pages on English language wikipedia do not usually show flight frequencies - it is much too difficult to keep this correct and current when airlines keep changing the number of flights on different routes around the world per week. As an example, the page for Istanbul Airport doesn't contain any flight frequencies - unless they are of some very special significance. You can see the guidelines for airport pages in English language Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Airports - if you think airport frequency should be part of standardised info in airport pages, then consider raising a discussion at WP:AIRPORT Pmbma (talk) 21:09, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Pmbma. I think my recent edits have fixed the issues raised by you. The lead section is intended to be a summary of the article, so I'm opposing its shortening. ~StyyxTalk? 21:48, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good job on Cem Bölükbaşı![edit]

Hi Styyx, I noticed that the you have edited and added info for Cem Bölükbaşı! Well done! Nothing much to say, but if you have time, please try and improve the information for other Formula 1, 2 and 3 drivers. I have done so for Robert Shwartzman, Théo Pourchaire and Jüri Vips. Unfortunately, I don't have that much time to update. Take your time, no rush. I will also try my best to update the pages. Thank you! Hello Izzlex94 verstappenchamp and many thanks! I created that article over a year ago, and have been updating it ever since. I actually don't do much article writing anymore. ~StyyxTalk? 10:17, 26 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
