Proposed deletion of Hearts and Minds (BBC)[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Hearts and Minds (BBC), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). How to get my tv tuner to work[edit]

Looks like your PC is a good machine!. Interesting it's a Medion brand, (which is sold by Aldi here in Australia, which is where I got my 'Tevion' TV card from. Apparently it's made by Medion too!) If you can, let me know what the outcome is when you change your TV card and try again to install it. Now, where shall I send the bill? - 220.101 talk\Contribs 12:25, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm very happy with it. I bought it in Aldi in Dublin a year ago for €500, can't really argue with that price. It didn't come with a monitor or speakers, but my da had a 19 inch dell screen & 5.1 speakers he didn't use anymore after abandoning his desktop & getting a laptop instead- worked out well for me! Anyway, I've just got back from the shop and am after inserting the replacement card- no dice. I'll try it in the other slot after this message but I don't expect much. Do you know whether it's possible that the slots are disabled or broken? As far as your bill goes, I'm brassic at moment so all I can offer ya is a spot on the couch in my apartment when you 'do europe'. :) Stanstaple (talk) 14:25, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Can't win can ya? Sometimes cards that should work just won't with a particular motherboard or some piece of software or a combination of same. Were the people where you bought the card able to make any suggestions? Possibly all you can do is contact the people at Medion, who may know what works with their PC, or a fix. Or contact the TV card people. If it won't work you should be able to get a refund and try another brand, perhaps one made by Medion which may be more likely to work in their PCs. The one I have is a Tevion DVBT-220RF, maybe they are still available? Another alternative is a USB TV 'stick', though it may be more expensive!
• Can't tell if the slots are disabled, are there any PCI cards in it at the moment? If so try removing the other hardware and then fully install the TV card before returning the other card.
- You really need to be able to use Device Manager(DM) to see whats going on. There may be a conflict with another piece of hardware (which I think is notified in DM with a yellow excamation mark). It may be time to use the F1 help button and get 'tech savvy'!
• It should appear in DM as a 'multimedia device', which I think Nil Einne mentioned.
• The installation instructions given are not always correct. Possibly just re-booting the computer (even a few times) might work.
• Try turning off as many running tasks as you can (see Task Manager) such as utilities in your startup folder, then try installing.
• Do you have any other PC you could try installing the card in? If so try it!
• Here is an unofficial Medion support forum, maybe they can help?
I have spent a lot more time on this than I intended (and I meant to suggest taking it back to the store!)
Don't know if I'll ever get a chance to 'do Europe', I've only been out of Oz, once, to Japan! . It's after 3.30AM(!) here so I'm going to bed. Good Luck! - 220.101 talk\Contribs 17:31, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hope you had a good lie-in, sleep is important man. The situation is sorted. Changing slots, unsurprisinly, had no obvious effect. I caught the tram back to the shop and part exchanged for a Hauppauge hybrid pci tuner. Funny thing is is that when I booted up there was no indication from windows that new hardware had been installed. Dejected but hoping for the best, I proceeded to install the supplied drivers, ran whatever tv watching software they bundle it with and picked up 2 (out of 4) analogue stations. At this stage I was just relieved the thing actually worked. I messed around with the aerial and ms media center for a bit- I was trying to see if I could get it to at least pick up the four terrestrial channels we have here. After scanning for additional channels for maybe a third time, a whole load of digital channels showed up. Digital terrestrial isn't even meant to be available here yet! I'm trying not to get too comfortable because I think they might be just testing the network; the thing might be gone tomorrow and I'll be left with 2 analogue channels with rubbish reception. Stranger still, my new card seems to be only mp2 compatible, whereas I was led to believe that Ireland was going down the mp4 road.
Anyway, that's how I spent my saturday- was meant to be cleaning the apartment, my house-mate's coming back to the apartment tomorrow, she's been away most of the summer. Got mired in pcdom for what seems like the first time since I tried to get frontier elite to work on my da's 486- memcheck and all that nonsense. I think it's me that's waffling now :).
Thanks again for your efforts; if nothing else they kept my morale up. I don't know how old you are but if you're not aware of it, have a look at working holiday visa; it might be time to root out your passport! I had one of the best years of my life in oz, maybe it's time for you to visit the antipodes:) G'day sir, is mise Stanstaple (talk) 22:35, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OLD! Watch the 'profanity' young fella! 4 stations? You must be 'out in the sticks'. We have 6 analogue! (one is a 'community' station), which I think are supposed to go off in 2013. Not sure how many free digital channels, probably one per analogue?
  • 'Hauppauge' eh, well that shows that perhaps 'brand name' is better than 'generic', but how much did extra it cost?
  • Do you have a roof mounted antenna or a set of rabbit ears?.
  • Is the tuner now showing up in Device Manager as a 'multimedia device'? (Get 'savvy' time!)
  • Female house-mate, lucky you! (better rush around and at least make it look like you tried to clean up!)
  • Agree on the sleep, but it was another 3+ hours before I 'hit the sack'!, and I put my PC on standby when it was supposed to be running a "Whole Computer" antivirus scan so it wasn't even up to 1,500,000 files when I returned! (finished at 1,618,456 after 14h 26m, with about 6-7hours on standby)
  • Probably got less than 6 sleep hours, if that! Had a 'wee dram' of Port to help too.
  • Likely a bit too old er. 'mature' for the working visa I fear, also too many generations(4?) from the 'old country' for EU citizenship. Some nieces and nephews however(their Granny was a migrant Republic of Ireland), are having a great old time in England and Europe. Even though part of the Commonwealth we tend to get treated as enemy aliens, or so I hear with my limited international travel experience. I think they're getting us back for the bread our ancestors stole to stay alive!
Tá mo bhricfeasta ite agam. And thats' all I've had so far today so now I need to dash off the the shops and then have my dinner! (I may even try installing my TV card!) - 220.101 talk\Contribs 10:07, 19 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maith thú! Meant to cast no aspersions about your age, genuinely didn't know and didn't want to assume :) I wouldn't be too cocky about ozzy telly; remember I've watched it! That said, I did kind of get hooked on deal or no deal while unemployed. SBS was quite good for the Champions League, though it did nearly cost me a job at the orchard when went in late because of the Liverpool v Chelsea semi-final.
  • The new card cost €70, nearly four times what I originally was going to pay.
  • I'm using a small circular antenna that got from my brother's old tv. It just sitting under my desk. I'm lucky in that I have line of sight to our transmitter Three Rock, I can actually see it out my window. The analogue reception is ropey but digital is comparable to DVD.
  • I've no 'Multimedia device' in device manager, at least not under the level of 'Seán PC'
  • 'Female house-mate': might not be all it's cracked up to be!
  • Only got about 4 hours sleep on saturday/sunday myself. Crashed my neighbours' party; they were all from the Balkans apart from me & one Pole. They spoke english around the pair of us though- good people. Serbs & Croats there- I didn't think they got along!?
  • If a working holiday is ruled out, you'll just have to opt for a recreational holiday. If you're referring to Trevelyn's Corn then I'm sure you haven't been part of the Commonwealth for quite some time. Think the poms might still refer to youse as colonials though :)
  • Tá siúl agam gur bhain tú taitneamh as do bhricfeasta. Not sure I can recommend installing a pci card as a method of relaxing though. Go raibh maith agat 220, is mise 212.129.76.9 (talk) 17:49, 21 September 2010 (UTC) (got logged out, Stanstaple (talk) 19:40, 22 September 2010 (UTC))[reply]
