Chandigarh

I've just reverted an edit at Chandigarh which introduced an inconsistency between the literacy rate given in the infobox and that stated in the body of the article. This may be because the article is using 2001 census data & the recent contributor was using 2011 data but not actually citing it. The edit introduced 88% in the box, cf. 81% in the article.

In any event, a quick calculation using the cited 2001 data suggests to me that we are also giving the wrong figure in the body. I make it c. 72% but have to dash. Any chance that you could check my calculation? There is an awkward asterisk next to the Chandigarh name in the data and I haven't tracked down what that means. - Sitush (talk) 09:14, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

The Census website gives it as 86.43%. The asterisk in the Census docs is to signify that it's a Union Territory. The doc actually goes into a fair bit of detail, so I don't think calculations are necessary, and are likely to be wrong -- especially because literacy rate is not "No of literates" divided by "total population". Literacy rates make allowances for age group -- infants will not be counted etc, I'm not sure what the cut-off mark for age is in India (or for that matter anywhere in the world). cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 09:59, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
That all makes sense, thanks. I thought that something looked wrong! Out of interest, the website that you link to appears to be provisional results - is this acceptable for use in the article, given that there is presumably some room for adjustment. Is it really likely that such figures would be amended by the govt. ? - Sitush (talk) 13:51, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
I think it's fine to use, it's just that there's some process around certifying and accepting the census numbers that's pending. But there's always the option to add a note clarifying that the numbers are provisional or some such thing. —SpacemanSpiff 14:04, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Mr Spiff (or may I call you Spaceman?).

Would you be able to have a word with User:HarshIya about his or her edits to Harshad Chopra? I know that even serious newspapers in India tend to cover celebrities in a gushing style, but this editor continually adds personal analysis of the subject in that same unencyclopedic style, with no or, in the latest series of edits, unreliable sources. A lesser issue is the insistence on the "correct" spelling of the subject's name even though most English-language sources seem to spell it as in the article title [1][2] - I assume that this is a voiced retroflex plosive that sounds to English speakers as either "r" or "d" depending on the accents of the speaker and listener. I don't feel able at the moment to approach this editor with the same degree of diplomacy and cultural sensitivity that I'm sure you would have, so would ask this favour of you. Phil Bridger (talk) 17:32, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

I'll do it in a bit. As for the spelling, Chopra is the "generally correct" spelling even in Indian English (but more importantly, the subject's choice of spelling!), it could be pronounced like a "light d", like with many other words like Gurgaon etc. I'm not sure it's an issue of cultural sensitivity here, this is the case with similar "celebrity articles" from all parts of the globe. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 17:42, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
Done and watchlisted. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 18:18, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Shall I revert all of his page moves? LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 15:54, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

I've just been looking through Category:Roman Catholic dioceses by country and Category:Roman Catholic dioceses in India and it appears clear that they have to be reverted. It's a boat load of moves, so I've asked Tinucherian and his talk page stalkers to take a look (Wikiproject Indian Christianity). If you want to move them all back, feel free! cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 15:58, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
I beg to differ, as Special:Contributions/PalakkappillyAchayan still shows (top) for me, and that wont appear if a page move has occured after. LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 16:02, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
?? I've just asked Tinu and co to help out, I didn't say they've even started doing the move backs! It's a lot of pages, so I was just saying if you really want to move all of them back yourself, then feel free. —SpacemanSpiff 16:05, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps me and you could work together on this. I could revert the moves, and you could delete the redirect pages I happen to create after per G6: Housekeeping. Shall we? LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 16:06, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
I'll do the G6s after about an hour or so, I'm working on something over at Commons right now. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 16:08, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I'll get to working on them. LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 16:09, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Finished it. I have moved all the pages back. How about next time, you block for a week, and we get a ban (not a block, a ban) imposed on him to keep him from moving pages at all? LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 16:34, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

As a note, use this page to tell what I have moved. Ignore the last two (Digit Ratio and Nyancat) though. LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 16:37, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Also, perhaps after G6ing them, you should move protect the original articles, to prevent it from happening on those pages again. LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 16:43, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
And perhaps create protect the articles you G6 to prevent a copy+paste move. LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 16:44, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
I don't think it's going to happen again; I personally don't think this is a move protection issue yet, it's more a problem with one single editor, so it should be handled that way. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 16:46, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
I can ask a admin or two on IRC to help with the mass deletion, if you want. LikeLakers2 (talk | Sign my guestbook!) 16:52, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
I think I can handle the deletion of the 218 pages  :) But if you still think move protection is needed, feel free to ask someone else if they think it's needed and to add it if they do, I have no objections. —SpacemanSpiff 16:55, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
Done, I think all the pages are gone now, both redirects and talk. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 17:08, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Think I'm done now. Over to you! It would be nice to get this to GA - so few Alt. Med. articles can reach even that level, but I think this one has a good chance, with a little more work (and possibly cutting that uncited bit on BAMS.) 86.181.103.102 (talk) 14:30, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

I'll attend to it in a few days, I've kind of got my hands full at the moment. It would make a good and easy GA but I'm not sure it'll pass the stability criteria just yet, so we've got to wait a while. BTW, why don't you get an account? cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 15:12, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
I don't want to get pulled into Wikipedia again. I edited ages ago, but found it taking too much time; by staying an IP, it prevents me from being able to, say, get a watchlist and other timesinks. 86.181.103.102 (talk) 21:01, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

List of centuries

Hi, I have created an article. After creating, I found that no separate articles for list of centuries exist for players who have not made more than 25 centuries. Laxman currently has made only 22. Is that a minimum qualification or what. --Commander (Ping Me) 12:21, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

The list is fine as the main article is well developed and this can be legitimately forked. The reason for the 25 minimum on the template was to focus on the top priorities for creation (was based on a discussion at WT:CRIC, you might search on the archives for around the date I created the template). You can clear up the lede a bit (expansion, referencing, copyedit), fix the referencing style (e.g. it's ESPNcricinfo not Cricinfo), and also follow WP:ACCESS guidelines (remove the spade symbol and use {{dagger}} and so on) and take it to WP:FLC. Should be fairly easy to do these things. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 12:39, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Take a look at List of centuries in women's Test cricket for compliance with the new FL criteria. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 13:02, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Will improve the article further. --Commander (Ping Me) 14:22, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Austereraj

I see that you issued a warning to Austereraj a while back. The poor edits continue at Smt. Shanti Devi Law College, with which they seem to have a personal involvement (someone actually outed the guy but I let it pass because of the ambiguity at his user page). Chennai

Hi. The sources for the Chennai article seem to be satisfying Wp:RS now, though many don't verify the statements given. The education section is not very proper at the moment, and I wish to follow Seattle's article on modifying the section as per your suggestion. If you could kindly remove the unwanted info, I'll re-write the section again as I am unclear on what is needed and what is not. I'll also try doing the same thing for the Names section if you could take out the improper data. And do you think all sections need re-write? If so, please tell me the list and I'll try my best to preserve the article's FA. Thank you. Secret of success Talk to me 12:56, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

New Jersey

Aside from an ISP that locates to New Jersey, and an interest in a couple of India articles that is leading to a lot of reverts and talk page discussion, is there anything that might ring a bell regarding User:KhatriNYC3 (previously, User:KhatriNYC) and a certain other person? - Sitush (talk) 15:48, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Nope, this is just standard KhatriNYC behavior. —SpacemanSpiff 04:13, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

  • My contrite apologies to you, SpacemanSpiff, as I have redirected the newbie Indian editor to look for you due to my urgent need to take some shut-eyes and also because I'm not familiar with the article pages. Please, if its not too much trouble... could I ask you to take a look and help him somewhat? Thanks and best. --Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 09:11, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
The nuclear history of India is not my area of familiarity at all, and from a cursory look earlier it appeared that he was replacing one bit of OR with another. If there are any specific examples of what the problem is I can take a deeper look at those edits, but in abstract, everything I saw from Smiling Buddha to Homi Bhabha was replacing some unsourced text with some other unsourced text. Sorry, I didn't notice the talk page of User:Deepeshraj1 to see the backstory. Eitherways, one thing would be to post at WT:INB where people who have some familiarity can chime in, the other is to wait for these to be addressed through CCI (I expect many of these are copyvios as they look like block lift-offs from blogs). cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 09:19, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

File:Vijayanagara flag.png--joke/synth flag?

I just came across it and got suspicious: a knife and a pig/boar? Given the epithet "pig breeder" I've heard flung about, and the author's Chola/TN-editing history ... Can you look into this, and, if needed, deleted? I don't have the background knowledge to sniff out the facts behind this sort of (ostensible) bunk. Saravask 15:45, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

The editor has been pushing some strange theories all around, Dab tried some clean up -- see Ancient Dravidian culture. —SpacemanSpiff 04:13, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
(talk page stalker). The flag is OR/SYNTH. He has uploaded a few other flags like this. He takes the various symbols of the dynasties (e.g Tiger for Cholas, Pig/varaha for vijayanagar) and creates his own flag. The colors, images, shape of the flag, proportion etc are all his own imagination. I had earlier removed his "chola dynasty flag" from all articles. I have removed the "vijayanagar flag" too from all the articles.--Sodabottle (talk) 04:38, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
I've tagged the flag at commons s {{Fictional}}. Other such flags can be tagged too and we can take them for a deletion review once we consolidate the list. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 16:05, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, Spaceman, Sodabottle. I'm surprised that the pig actually *is* the Vijayanagar state totem or mascot (I mean wow, what were they thinking? What a way to rally the troops--with a pig. They should have taken a cue from the Cholas, who showed they knew their savage animal stuff by picking a tiger.) Else I would not have accused this Avedeus (talk · contribs) of regionally motivated malicious propagation of an "attack flag". Also should have checked his edits on en-wiki rather than just at commons; he seems to have been discoursing with dab--whatever the result that came of it. Of course, that still doesn't excuse him from just making/synthesising flags and possibly other stuff up; still agree with the tagging and likely deletion review due to the confusion the made-up flags cause. One can only think (and shudder) at the idea of how his type are quietly disporting themselves here by sticking up fictive/synth history. Saravask 14:39, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Its no ordinary pig :-). Its the Varaha, the third avatar of Vishnu. So martial enough for rallying the troops. The early Pallavas too had the same symbol.--Sodabottle (talk) 15:50, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

I suspect these 2 users - Abhishek191288 and vensatry (please check their edits and edit summaries - u will get a clear picture of their non sense) might be a meat puppet, He has been disrupting my edits, the article for the past couple of days and I have not restored any, most of the part which was researched and included by me freshly was out of cumbersome effort. Nice dog! Very nice dog! Not the point...! Okay, so the above FLC which I adopted has attracted some comments about the way in which Indian/Pakistani etc players' names are represented, and since I'm certainly no expert in that specific field, I've asked you and Harrias to chip in. I'm not fussed what the outcome is, but I think we need some consistency with these lists and your advice on that specific topic would be much appreciated! Regarding this this request; from your experience, do you think there's enough behavioral evidence for a DUCK block? OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:04, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

It most certainly is him but we'll need an SPI as there's a pretty good farm of socks and blocking one is almost never enough as he uses different accounts for different articles and the existence of one account means there are many more. I filed an SPI a few days back and blocked a couple, this might have been created after that. We've also done a couple of IP soft and hardblocks on him before. I'm strapped for internet access right now, so if someone can get to it before I do, please file an add on case at WP:SPI/Padmalakshmisx. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 03:18, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Weigh in?

Would you like to weigh in at the discussion in Talk:India on some 40 odd images? I know that's a lot, but a simple Yes/No would be adequate. Of course, if you choose to comment at more length, it would be even better. The India page is now the second most-viewed country page (after the US) and the 15th page overall, so having a set of high quality representative pictures becomes even more imperative. Wikimedia Stories Project

Hello,

My name is Victor Grigas, and I'm a storyteller at the Wikimedia foundation. We're telling stories of Wikipedia users, editors, donors, programmers and staff to paint a picture of who uses Wikipedia - for the 2011 fundraiser.

I am in the process of planning a trip to India to gather stories from Indian Wikipedians in face-to-face interviews (possibly on video).

My primary goal is to conduct 15-20 interviews, and hopefully enough of my interviews will make compelling stories that will effectively solicit donations from the public. These stories may also be used for other communication purposes by the foundation.

I found your userpage on a list of prolific Wikipedians and thought I’d reach out to you. Prolific editing is always a good story to tell!

If you are interested in participating, please contact me via my email:

Thank you for your time!

More images in Demographics

I was afraid that people would say the my selection of the 12 images was geographically biased, which they did, even though my choices reflected the bias in Indian FPs. Fearing more such complaints, and the process dragging on, I've added 24 new images to the Demographics set, making a complete set of 36 representing every state and religion in India, with the exception of native Andaman Island(er)s and Indian Jews, both, sadly, dying communities. If you'd like to change your vote, in light of the new images, please do; otherwise, your old choices will remain as is. The new images are not FPs, since the first set of 12 had exhausted all the India FPs; however, they are still good hi-res images. I had to go through some 10 thousand images to find them. WP India in the Signpost

"WikiProject Report" would like to focus on WikiProject India for a Signpost article to coincide with WikiConference India next month. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Other editors will also have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or the interviewer, Belugaboy. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 03:43, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

City templates

Can you please give your opinion here? P. S. I had, specifically, used the Wikiproject Tamil Nadu discussion page and not the Wikipedia India page as I wish to make Wikiproject Tamil Nadu more active.-RaviMy Tea Kadai 16:31, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
