my story today

Our festival's last concert was most moving and inspiring, - also the story of Walter Arlen, - today I'm proud that I survived the decision in WP:ARBINFOBOX for 10 years, standing and singing -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:23, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today's story is about a great pianist with an unusual career, taking off when he was 50. It's the wedding anniversary of Clara and Robert Schumann, but I was too late with our gift. Just for fun: when do you think did Mrs. and Mr. Schumann get their infoboxes, and by whom? (The answer can be found here, but please think first.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:10, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today I remember Raymond Arritt, who still helps me, five years after he died, per what he said in my darkest time on Wikipedia (placed in my edit-notice as a reminder), and by teh rulez. - Latest pics from a weekend in Berlin (one more day to come). - I saw that you retired from arbcom, - happy retirement! What did you see about the Schumanns? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:02, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks Gerda, even though I am still on the Committee until the end of the year (and perhaps a bit longer if a case opens and carries over), I do feel somewhat unburdened and happier. I may get back to editing and reviewing at some point! SilkTork (talk) 09:10, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds good! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:31, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Re. CV and privacy

Hi, I don't know whether you want to get this talk page thread revdeled. It spills the beans. Regards, Esowteric + Talk + Breadcrumbs 14:24, 15 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you, though that information has already been shared on the AN thread which led to the ArbCom case request. That information is available on many places on the internet. That is a significant part of the issue. And as long as there is a CV editing Wikipedia attracting attention there will be people who are able to make the connection. SilkTork (talk) 06:46, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rutherford

Please address an unregistered user in Talk:Ernest Rutherford who is engaging in edit wars and violating WP:CIV. Doughbo (talk) 06:10, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've looked. They appear to be putting forward legitimate concerns. I see no edit warring on the article - they are confining their concerns to the talkpage, which is the appropriate thing to do. I can see that things are getting a bit tetchy, but that is understandable when they are faced with accusations of being Islamophobic. Concentrate on the content not the contributor please. The nearest I can find to edit warring is where they have twice removed a resolved template because they feel the matter has not yet been resolved because the sources are not clear or reliable enough. SilkTork (talk) 11:10, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I was confused by their phrasing and I thought it best to seek help rather than engage. I appreciate your attention. Doughbo (talk) 03:27, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Admin's Barnstar
For your long years of service, especially on Arb Com. Ad Orientem (talk) 18:04, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll second this.
I saw your initial post and was looking at barnstars, and it just felt like there just isn't a barnstar good enough, appropriate enough.
Anyway, I wish you and yours all the best for your future : ) - jc37 00:32, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou Ad Orientem and jc37, I do like barnstars, I feel we should use them more often. SilkTork (talk) 09:07, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

my story today

My story today is sad but great. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:45, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I like Russell Sherman's hat. I'd like such a hat. SilkTork (talk) 10:07, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today's story is Sherman, but I linked to what's now yesterday's ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:13, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A few more pics, and see my talk for what we sang today (I'm the woman in red), and what Tabea Zimmermann played (today's story on her birthday): I heard it, and it's on YouTube. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:49, 8 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
More pics, and today's story is on a birthday, and the real DYK was already on that birthday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:36, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today, it's a place that inspired me, musings if you have time. My corner for memory and music has today a juxtaposition of what our local church choirs offer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:20, 20 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And today it's about a couple - found the cute image only yesterday --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:24, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I thought of Brian Bouldton today, and his ways to compromise. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:04, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Appeal suggestion

In terms of what should happen how about we lift all restrictions but I agree I will only create 2 or 3 parish articles a week (on top of my 1 article a month on anything) but this wouldn't be a formal restriction just something I would follow for 2 or 3 months and I could simply ask you after 2 or 3 months if its OK to stop following that. As noted this suggestion wouldn't otherwise require anymore input from the community (and is simple to follow) and the 6 months suspended restriction could stay in place meaning any admin (even if involved) could reinstate the restrictions. This would provide a more gradual exit to the restrictions and give the community time to see and give me more time to finish my former parishes project and do more work on Commons. User:Worm That Turned what do you think of this suggestion? Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:59, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would prefer an appeal in which you show understanding of the concerns, and you set out why folks shouldn't be concerned any more. And you set that out in a manner that inspires confidence. This suggestion does not inspire confidence because it doesn't address the concerns, and gives the impression that you yourself don't have the confidence to create articles that people won't object to. What would reassure me is the thought that you could create articles not just for 2 or 3 months on probation, but for the rest of your time on Wikipedia. I do understand your trepidation. And I hope you understand that your trepidation is contagious. Show me confidence, and I will will feel confident. Show me doubt, and I will feel doubt. SilkTork (talk) 13:03, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have the confidence that that my creations will be acceptable, I was just suggesting something that would help the community see that and give me a bit more time to do work I can still do with the current restrictions. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:48, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's worth noting that Worm That Turned has retired from ArbCom, and hasn't been active on Wikipedia since stepping down, so it is not likely that he will comment on this matter. It's also worth noting that I also have resigned, and will leave the Committee at the end of this year, so I may not be of much further value to you on this matter. SilkTork (talk) 20:34, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have an existing website

First off, I am a rookie at Wikipedia and the various rules and regulations. I have an existing website covering the material that I'd like to create an article about. Can I successfully/properly create an article under these circumstances? Indiefilmpros (talk) 23:58, 10 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(from Teahouse) hi Indiefilmpros and SilkTork! I have answered this question at the Teahouse. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 00:45, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks User:Melecie. SilkTork (talk) 09:19, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oakmoss

Hi Silktork. You moved Evernia prunastri to oakmoss with the comment that the move was based on "reliable sources" without providing a single one! Could you please do so ASAP? MeegsC (talk) 12:19, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MeegsC. There are already at least two sources used in the article that use the term oakmoss. There are more here and here if you wish to use those. The move was done under the basis of WP:COMMONNAME - there were a number of articles which were piped such as here and here. A quick Google search for "Evernia prunastri" returns 735,000 hits, while a search for "oakmoss" returns over 4 million. The lichen is heavily used in the perfume industry, where it is known under the common name of oakmoss, which is why that name rather than Evernia prunastri is so popular. SilkTork (talk) 12:50, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Could I ask you to move Rock tripe to Umbilicaria? Using your Google search method, "Umbilicaria" turns up 145,000 results, while "rock tripe" has less than 20,000. It's bugged me for years that this article is at the much less common "common name". Esculenta (talk) 16:26, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Esculenta. I think that is a more complicated case. It appears to me that the article is about "rock tripe", that is, the specific topic of emergency food from a variety of lichens in the genus Umbilicaria as described in various reliable sources, including Encyclopaedia Britannica, which was the prompt for the article to be created. My understanding is that Umbilicaria hyperborea or "blistered rock tripe", is one such rock tripe. There may well be others in the Umbilicaria genus which are not considered rock tripe. It may be more appropriate to have an article on rock tripe and a separate article on the genus Umbilicaria; in the same way that we have articles on Edible mushroom and Mushroom. SilkTork (talk) 17:16, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, that's a pretty good idea (separate articles) ... I'll put it on my "to-do" list. Thanks, Esculenta (talk) 18:08, 30 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

November music

November songs

Hevenu shalom aleichem is my story today. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:48, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I like the peace context, though I think that song, with its pro-Israel history, may have a little too many political associations for comfort, Gerda. SilkTork (talk) 07:00, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
See my talk: I wrote it because it was sung at a wedding in Germany. At the time - August - it was harmless. Then we had a deletion discussion, and then an attack. The father of the bride has a grandson who was just drafted in Israel. Even more desire for peace.
See my talk more: my story today is about my song of defiance, - it was a great pleasure to hear it performed today! The line "Ich steh hier und singe" (I stand here and sing) is in the movement with the music pictured, which begins with "Trotz -- Trotz -- Trotz", sounding much tougher than "defiance" ;) - in this YouTube it's at 4:55. So in a way, that arbcase caused a FA and GA to be written ;)
For more comfort, I uploaded images from a recent trip with my choir to Aachen, just for fun. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:19, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I proudly remember having sung in an oratorio premiere seven years ago OTD. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:23, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
More, if you like: today I have three items on the Main page, almost too much of a good thing! Bach's amazing cantata with the unusual scale, first performed 300 years ago OTD, the nun for the prostitutes, and Schumann's wedding gift for Clara. Also first day of vacation pics uploaded. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:27, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today is St. Martin's Day, which stands for sharing. Sharing one more day of vacation ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:16, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Next days of pics - today my topic is a soprano. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:54, 17 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Did you consult the GA review, where the reviewer went into major research about the singer being Jewish? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:16, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, I just saw your comment that there were no sources, and I agree with you. As you say, in Wikipedia is not so much knowing something, it's about citing to reliable sources. As there are no sources in the article to say that person is Jewish then we don't say so, even if it is true. If no reliable sources mention it, then it appears not to be a notable piece of information, and constructing a plausibility from original research is not the way to resolve the matter. SilkTork (talk) 10:30, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And a small point, but one worth considering, is that I am of Sephardic descent, as indicated by my surname, Pereira. My family, however, under pressure, converted to Catholicism. That someone is of Sephardic descent does not prove they are Jewish. SilkTork (talk) 10:40, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just saw that my reviewer went to a lot of trouble and research to find references, and I just didn't have time to study it all, and feel a bit guilty, - that's all. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:06, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today: in memoriam Jerome Kohl who said (In Freundschaft): "and I hope that they have met again in the beyond and are making joyous music together" --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:26, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

December music

December songs
story · music

Today's story is about Maria Callas, on her centenary. - Aaron Copland died OTD, and Jerome Kohl (mentioned in November) said something wise on Copland's talk, - yes, regarding a soft(er) stance towards infoboxes. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:26, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I like Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man". It can be a little strident, but when ELP added some needed vigour, it really swept majestically along. SilkTork (talk) 17:48, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds lovely. I heard Mussorgsky's Pictures in a great new hall (still a red link), and it sounded like an overwhelming hymn for Ukraine. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:53, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's not ELP's version of Pictures you're talking about, is it? As they did a version of that as well. SilkTork (talk) 19:03, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good to know, - no, I meant the one linked. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:35, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also in Paris (29 Nov): a visit to the Palais Garnier, - to match the story of Medea Amiranashvili, - don't miss listening to her expressive voice. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:17, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My story today is about Michael Robinson, - it's an honour to have known him. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:22, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today, I have a special story to tell, of the works of a musician born 300 years ago. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:04, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

2024 ARCA

I have added to User:Crouch, Swale/Appeal. Essentially I am outlining that I can create good articles without supervision and it outlines my editing plan that I don't need supervision with (though I will probably keep you updated) and that we can take our time with respect to motions etc.

As a side note back in 2018/2019 I pushed hard to have the restrictions removed completely for the reason that I didn't think they were needed at all and was confident in that yet you and others wanted then being relaxed gradually, I then lost hope in them being removed completely. Now you and others are saying you either want them being removed completely or no change. Could you please explain why, thanks. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:55, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The folks here who volunteer to assist in helping others, do it willing and in good faith. The reward is when they see others learn and thrive, or when they see problematic users stop being problematic (one way or another) so the project can develop. However, there is a limit to how much time can be given to assist one person before good will and patience starts to wear out. That you don't seem to understand that, so have to ask that question, is a part of the problem. That basic lack of empathy for others compared with the amount of time you expect others to give you can be exasperating. Your question here, for example, though you say please, is presented in a manner as though you expect me to spend my time answering it. It gives the impression that your focus is on yourself rather than the project and those others who volunteer here. I was interested in helping you at one time Crouch, Swale, but I am no longer. You have over the years taken up a deal of my time for no reward. The issue with you is still ongoing. So, speaking for myself, I am just tired of it. At this point I just want you to either get it together to edit in the way you want without supervision or problems, or just accept that there is an area of this project in which you are not a good fit, and concentrate instead on those areas where your help is welcomed. I am retiring from the Committee in a few weeks. I do not expect you to be asking me any more questions. You can ask someone else in future. SilkTork (talk) 03:14, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You and others want (or at least did want) to keep the restrictions so I do think its reasonable to ask you for guidance on having them removed. I have made significant efforts to do as asked, for example we decided in January 2019 to allow me to submit 1 article a week through AFC and I thought you're idea was that if I managed to do this without any significant number being declined then we would allow me to create without AFC and I did exactly that but it wasn't until 2022 we allowed me to create without AFC. The only explanation seemed to be (from SoWhy on 1 January 2020) that the 1 a week forces me to take more time but then why did we even suggest this anyway then if people weren't going to be compelled by this. We might as well just not have bothered. I think indeed we just need to remove the restrictions. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:21, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

PS - Btw, I liked your post so much about the 2021 WMF financials I went & found the 2022 one. Shearonink (talk) 00:43, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. And, yes, it is important to spread the message that Wikipedia doesn't need money. The project could survive for a 100 years and more on the donations that WMF currently has in the bank by sacking all of the staff who don't actually build the project, but manage to frustrate and annoy and dispirit those who do. SilkTork (talk) 12:13, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. Would you be so kind as to do a G4 check on the above? This was created by the same user who created Lulzim Ismaili which you also G4 speedied, but in this case the speedy tag is being reverted by an IP, most likely the creator. Quick question about EFM

Thank you for granting me administrator! I'm a bit confused why EFM was pulled in that; was this on purpose, or was this an accident in removing the other roles that grant rights are neat subsets of the admin toolkit? — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:12, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Red-tailed hawk, that would have been a mistake. I've been told several times to clear away clutter when appointing admins, and I didn't notice that that was something extra. As you are now an admin you should be able to grant it to yourself. If not, ping me again and I'll restore it. SilkTork (talk) 03:18, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! I'll restore the right. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:23, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Red-tailed hawk, I just did it. I'm off to bed, and didn't want to leave you frustrated in case you had a problem. have fun with the mop! SilkTork (talk) 03:26, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
