My RfA

Hey Shyam,

I just wanted to thank you for your support in my recent request for adminship, which passed unanimously with a final tally of 38/0/0. I appreciate your trust, and will do my best to uphold it. Don't hesitate to let me know if you ever need anything. — TKD::Talk 05:28, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

RfA thanks

Hello Shyam! Thank you for the confidence shown in me during my recently concluded RfA, which succeeded with a final tally of 77/2/0 . I'm still exploring the new tools, so feel free to tell me of any mistakes I might make. In case you need help with anything, just drop me a message. Happy Diwali

File:Diwalipuja.jpg
Happy Diwali!!!
Known as the "Festival of Lights" in India, Diwali symbolises the victory of good over evil. It represents celebration of hope and life, and is an occasion to strengthen relationships. This year, it is celebrated on April 30, 2024. I take this as an occasion to wish you the best in the days to come. May this Diwali invigorate you, bringing you more happiness and content. Happy Diwali!!!

Image:Bir Singh Mahato.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bir Singh Mahato.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nilfanion (talk) 01:03, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

My RFA!

Shyam Bihari, thank you so much for your support for my RfA. I passed with a vote tally of 61/0/1. I am honored that the consensus was to allow me the added privilege of the admin mop. I appreciate your support and kind words on my RFA! --plange 22:40, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I was doing the renaming manually, and I didn't get a chance to do the second one yet. It will be completed in the next day or two. Thanks =) Nishkid64 21:02, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Admin coaching - October 30 - Held requests

As it's been a while since you signed up for admin coaching, I am just checking that you still wish to receive it. Leave a note on my talk page, and I'll assign you some of our free coaches. Let me know (on my talk page) if you have any questions. Cheers, Highway Grammar Enforcer! 08:09, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Regarding West Bengal FAC

Hi! Thanks for the comment in the FAC. However, your suggestion of using short names for the institutions has a problem - international audience may fail to understand (of course wikilinks will take any user to respective articles, still it's better that a FA be as self-sufficient as possible). On over-wikification, yes there are some. I am trying to dewikilink as much as posible. Please see the FAC for my reply there. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 09:05, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Please read Acronyms and abbreviations in Wikipedia:Manual of Style. It states "Do not assume that your reader is familiar with the acronym or abbreviation you are using. The standard writing style is to spell out the acronym or abbreviation on the first reference (wikilinked if appropriate) and then show the acronym or abbreviation after it, in parentheses. This tells readers they will probably find it later in the text and makes it easy for them to refer back to it." This article follows the MoS. That's why full names have been used. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 10:59, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Admin coaching - October 30 - New coaches

Your coaches are NCurse and Mr. Lefty. Exactly what form the admin coaching takes is up to you and the coaches to decide, but a general piece of advice I give is to set up a user subpage (for example User:EXAMPLE/Admin coaching) to keep coaching discussion together. That prevents things getting split up over three talk pages, which can get confusing! Let me know on my talk page if you have any questions. Cheers, Highway Grammar Enforcer! 22:31, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Image issues

Hi Shyam. I see that you are nominated for administrator. That is great, and I wish you the best of luck. I was looking through your contributions, though, and see a couple problems with your uploads that you may want to fix, if for no other reason than to set a good example.

  • A few, like Image:Shoreline Puskar Lake.jpg, have educational restrictions and are not free for Wikipedia's purposes.
  • The summaries of your oldest uploads, like Image:Falgun Mela.jpg, indicate that you are the creator, but would benefit from explicit statements and/or a self- tags.
    • A few of them are also derivative works and need statements about their subjects' copyrights. if you are not the creator of the artwork in Image:Shyam Bahadur.jpg, for example, it is best to tag the image based upon the artwork's copyright, not your reproduction.
  • Be wary of WP:FUC #1 when uploading images of people, such as living, active, accessible politicians.

All the best. ×Meegs 04:47, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

One more thing. I asked you a question at /Archive5#Copyright_of_Image:Bw_mm2.jpg while you were away. I know it was a long time ago, but if you can remember the reason that you applied the cc-sa tag to that image, please add it to the description page. You made a similar edit to Image:SherKhanNasher.jpg. ×Meegs 05:02, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Meegs, I am very thankful to get such notices and suggestion. I have made some appropriate changes to the. I am very sorry about that I could not respond when I was at the wikibreak and after that I simply archived the paegs without noticing such issues. Thanks for knowing about WP:FUC too. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 08:28, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi Shyam. To tell you the truth, the edits that you just made don't help to clarify the situations. It's important for other people to be able to verify the copyright status of images. It's usually a good idea too add as much information as you have about an image, its creation, and its copyright status to the description page, in addition to the copyright template. About the edits:
  • What is the deal with Image:Shyam Bahadur.jpg? First you wrote 'available on www.khatushyamji.com', then you deleted that and stated simply {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}. Then, just now, you made it {{PD-art}} and then {{FAL}}. If this last version is correct, you need to identify the artist and give some evidence that they have agreed to the Free Art License.
  • Why do you think that Image:SherKhanNasher.jpg is in the public domain? Incidentally, {{PD}} is obsolete to encourage us to provide the answer. It is an orphan, so perhaps it is better to just list it for deletion than try to sort it out.
  • After I left your the message about Image:Bw mm2.jpg in May, I forgot about it. I assumed that you had some off-wiki correspondence that lead you to such a specific license as cc-by-sa. I did visit the source site at the time though, and the impression that I remember is that all of the its images were taken from various sources. The uploader does not seem to be still around to answer questions, so I suggest we list it on PUI.
Also note that there are more similar problems in your early uploads; I only pointed-out a few examples. I think it would also be a good idea — when you have a chance, this isn't urgent — for you to go through all of your contributions in the image space. In the examples above, you seem to have applied license tags such as cc-by-sa and gfdl without cause. There are no doubt many similar edits that you could find using your edit summaries (which are excellent, by the way). Unless there is evidence that the copyright holder has agreed to a specific license, we must not assume that they have. For example, "Published on the Brian Westbrook Fansite with permission from the photographer", does not indicate either the restrictions or freedoms of the cc-by-sa or gfdl licenses. Let me know if I help you at all. ×Meegs 09:36, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Image:SherKhanNasher.jpg could be deleted, but as author stated the image seems to be in public domain. I think there is no need to hurry to delete such images as they could be in public domain. Regarding Image:Shyam Bahadur.jpg, I am not sure about tagging, but I have tried to contact the artist of the image but could not get any reply yet. May be because of that it could be deleted. As uploader provided a source for the Image:Bw mm2.jpg, which redirects to some other site which claims to GNU General Public License, and have similar kind of sports images (cud not find the same image:(), so I do not think the image is unfee and need to list to WP:POI. And I do agree with your suggestions. I would do it later, as my exams are very near. Very thanks for your kind words. Shyam (T/C) 11:58, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Just three quick things:
  • Image:SherKhanNasher.jpg – The uploader's statement, "everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies of this license document, but changing it is not allowed," does not support this being PD
  • Image:Shyam Bahadur.jpg – Would you take the copyright tag off of the image, so that we do not propagate misinformation about its license? I think it would be a good idea if you would nominate it for deletion too. You can always reupload it if you the author agrees to a free license.
  • Image:Bw_mm2.jpg – Which website mentions (or mentioned) the GFDL? The sourced website is no longer active, and, as far as I can remember, hosted images from many different sources (i.e. that they did not own and could not release the rights to).
×Meegs 12:33, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Here is the link which claims GNU License, but the image doesn't seem to be copied fro here. Shyam (T/C) 12:55, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, the football statistics tracking software is under the GPL, but not the site's content. The image site was completely separate, regardless. I'm going to list it on PUI. Best. ×Meegs 13:31, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Congratulations. Here are what pass for words of wisdom from the puppy:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Unspecified image sources

Hello,

I distinctly remember the process I went through to get those pictures - a history buff (I can't remember who - it was a long time ago) scanned a bunch of pictures from this PD book (it was PD because he specifically mentioned the publication date, and it was well before the limit - I think it might even have been published in the late 19th century) about British history that he had. He mentioned this on IRC, and so I helped him crop and rotate the images. I can't remember who this user was, though, or else I could point you to him to ask him specifically... that's the best I can say, sorry :( ugen64 04:26, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Ignatieff article reprotected

Hi, [Not sure what's going on? http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Michael_Ignatieff&diff=87160323&oldid=87156051] 64.229.31.197 16:49, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Michael Ignatieff

Hey Shyam, I've just reprotected Michael Ignatieff. The person making these requests uses numerous sockpuppets and is currently evading a block. Also, you'll notice that they tried earlier today under the name User:Canuckster and the requst was declined by Steel here due to the fact the person making these requests has repeatedly vandalised this set of articles. If you have a look at the talk page, you'll get a better idea of what has been going on. They also filed a spurious RFC against me (details are on WP:AN/I here). Please let me know if you require further information but I would ask that it not be unprotected at the present time. I will try lowering the protection to s-protection in a couple of days but due to sockpuppet activity I believe it should remain protected at the present time. Thanks, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 17:03, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I removed the s-protection from the talk page just a few minutes ago. I haven't removed the tag yet as I've been trying to do several things at once and haven't had a chance. I know you don't mean harm and I didn't mean to imply otherwise, I'm just trying to let you know that there are ongoing issues and unprotecting the pages at the request of someone who is supposed to be blocked and has a long history of vandalising the Michael Ignatieff and Liberal Party of Canada leadership convention, 2006 is a bad idea. When protection is removed, I believe it should be lowered to s-protection rather than fully unprotected because this person uses Bell Sympatico which uses dynamic IP addresses and so they often vandalised using their IP. Also, I think when someone requests unprotection of a page and they speak on behalf of an admin claiming that the admin will keep an eye on the page, as this person did in their request for unprotection, you should verify with the other admin before accepting the claims. Thanks, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 17:26, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I do not like protecting articles at alI and I agree that we don't want pages protected for too long. But this article should not be fully unprotected at the present time. I don't think you understand what has been happening on and around these pages and I'm asking you please do not unprotect it at the moment. This is a WP:BLP issue. I will lower protection of the article to s-protect in a few days if there is no problems. The last time the talk page was unprotected, this person repeatedly vandalised the talk page with defamatory comments about the subject of the article. So CJCurrie had to s-protect the article and then he eventually had to fully protect it when they started using sleeper accounts. The vandal then began attacking and harassing CJ and even created attack pages about him, so I put the s-protection into my name to try to help Cj but they then began attacking me. This person who is asking for unprotection is not allowed to be using this site at present because they are blocked but they are using dynamic IPs and sockpuppet accounts to evade the block.

Please call me Sarah. Ewart is my surname and Ottawaman (one of the names the vandal uses) just calls me that to be rude. Thanks, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 18:01, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

No, no need to apologise, Shyam. I think it's just a busy time of year for everyone and you weren't interrupting me. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 18:09, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Good luck with your exams, Shyam. I hope they go well. I apologise if I seemed brusk before; I didn't intend to. The problems with this person have been going on since June and the constant flood of sockpuppets gets very tedious. I just realised that your RfA only finished on Friday and I feel bad that this happened on your first day. Thanks for your help and good luck with your studies. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 19:06, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey Shyam, I just wanted to let you know that I decided to try changing the Michael Ignatieff article protection to semi-protection...if the sockpuppetry, blp violations, vandalism, etc start again, I will re-protect it. If the sock asks you again to fully unprotect it again, I would ask that you please don't do it for the time being.
Also, I would like to add my voice to those folk below offering you congratulations re your successful RfA. Well done and I wish you all the best with your adminship. I hope I didn't give you too much of a Baptism by fire today. Cheers, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 13:07, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Hello Mirv, you uploaded this image long time back and tagged it with {{PD}} which is an obsolete tag. Could you provide some copyright information, so that a suitable tag could be put on. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 16:08, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

{{PD}} is copyright information. I got the image from the website of the national archives of Canada; they clearly state that it is public domain, though not precisely why, and I have no reason to doubt them. I'm not sure what else is necessary. —Charles P._(Mirv) 19:58, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Licensing template

You may wish to update your licensing template advice stuff: [[CC]] links to a disambiguation page and does not redirect to Creative Commons. --Gwern (contribs) 18:01, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

I came on them as I was disambiguating and noticed that all the User talk ones were because of you: [1], [2], [3], [4], & [5]. Obviously I fixed them; this was for future reference. --Gwern (contribs) 18:14, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
It's not a big problem; but I'd rather solve problems at their source once and for all - if you often use your own handrolled templates or messages, it can be a good idea to check and make sure you aren't proliferating ambiguous links. Normally you can count on other people to disambiguate templates, but they have to be publicly accessible first... --Gwern (contribs) 19:13, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Google hits must not be taken as a yardstick in Asian related AfD's. Newspapers of Vernacular Languages may have millions of readership. For example, in India every state has its own language. News reports from such dailies are not available in google eventhough it have millions of readership. But news reports from English dailies with 1000 or 2000 copies are available in google search. It is really misleading...Isn't it...? In this context of notability tests based on google hits may be a worthless, foolish effort. In such circumstances we must consider the words of native wikipedians with more importance. What is ur opinion ……? Nileena joseph (Talk|Contribs) 05:47, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I have updated the source and licence on both en (which I still think was a pointless exercice) and commons. Can you have a look at the proposed deletion again ? Thanks, Schutz 07:48, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Sir, I have added useful info into the "In Popular Culture" section that you requested. Please take a look and see if this is ok.Dineshkannambadi 16:09, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
