Happy New Year![edit]

Happy New Year!
Hello Schwede66:

Did you know ... that back in 1885, Wikipedia editors wrote Good Articles with axes, hammers and chisels?

Thank you for your contributions to this encyclopedia using 21st century technology. I hope you don't get any unnecessary blisters.

The 2023 picture is from the Abel Fest in Köthen, celebrating the tercentenary of Carl Friedrich Abel, a viol virtuoso, composer and concert organiser in London (together with Bach's youngest son), born on 22 December 1723 in Köthen, where the new catalogue of his works was introduced, - my story today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:00, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New article: Double Shuffle (Canadian political episode)[edit]

Hi Schwede66, I uploaded a new article yesterday: Double Shuffle (Canadian political episode). Still needs some work and citations, but I wanted it out of my "Draft" section. Comments / questions welcome! Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 01:50, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nice one! Mr Serjeant Buzfuz, can I suggest that you nominate the article for DYK? Schwede66 02:25, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, glad you like it! But no, not interested in sending it to DYK. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 06:53, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can you add references to those paragraphs that are currently unreferenced? If you do, User:Mr Serjeant Buzfuz, I'll nominate it. Schwede66 07:51, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Much appreciated, Amakuru. The same goes to you. And if you ever find yourself visiting New Zealand, get in touch beforehand! Schwede66 20:20, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh indeed, I definitely will do that. Actually I have a very old friend who lives in Te Anau, which I believe is still kind of remote even after making the 24 hour journey around the world to get to NZ! But it's on my bucket list that I really must make it out there at some point.  — Amakuru (talk) 00:06, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, I live in a place that is similarly remote, Amakuru. And I'm not sure that 24 hours is quite enough to make it from the UK to NZ; I'd allow 36 hours with all the mucking around at airports etc. Schwede66 00:19, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah right, I guess I made the mistake of thinking it would be similar to going to Australia, which I've done a couple of times... I thought for a moment you were near to the ferry to Wellington, but I think my map scale was deceptive. Personally I just live in a small town called London, at the southern end of Britain... Remote for you, but there are usually lots of people around when I cycle across the river into work in the morning!  — Amakuru (talk) 00:29, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Google Maps suggests that it's a 3 hr 48 min drive from the ferry to our place. Schwede66 00:32, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Honorific prefixes[edit]

Hi Schwede66, regarding this revert: there seems to be some variance as to where the honorifics "Sir"/"Dame" go in the infobox. A quick glance at the bio articles linked at New Zealand Order of Merit#Living grand and principal companions, for instance, will show that most cases put it in |honorific-prefix= instead of |name=. I suggest that it ought to be standardised this way round – this is already the prevailing convention across Wikipedia, not just for Kiwis but also for Brits. Thanks! — RAVENPVFF · talk · 22:38, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I'm all for standardising things, Ravenpuff. "Sir"/"Dame" aren't honorifics, though; they are pre-nominal letters. I agree that guidance, e.g. MOS:PREFIX and MOS:SIR / MOS:DAME could be clearer. Schwede66 00:28, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with you on the need for standardisation and clearer guidance. But I note that the relevant MOS section already calls them honorific titles (although pre-nominals they also are), and says nothing about infobox placement; the first use of the name refers to the lead. Placing them in |honorific-prefix= is very much the usual convention – so if we want to standardise things that should be the way to go. It also makes sense that we use |name= solely for the person's name. — RAVENPVFF · talk · 02:08, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you want to weigh in, Paora? Schwede66 02:25, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rakaia[edit]

Hi, on the newly created page Rakaia, alongside a couple of edits i'm happy to have included, you've suggested several date format changes - but from same MOS:NUM document that you linked, those seemed fine as I had them: 2024-01-07, i.e. "yyyy-mm-dd" It reads "...should all use the same format, which may be:" "the format used for publication dates in the article (see above);" "the format expected in the citation style adopted in the article; or" "yyyy-mm-dd"

Sjl197 (talk) 17:42, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to revert, Sjl197. Schwede66 17:46, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer the format you suggest - i think it's less confusing to read for readers who might confound the day/month. It's just there's a bot (Qbugbot) that has been creating a bunch of others such as this Ceratolasma, hence i was aiming for adding in more inline with its core format so many are roughly consistent. Sjl197 (talk) 20:03, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I much prefer dmy dates over "yyyy-mm-dd" as it's more human-readable. Schwede66 20:57, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article help[edit]

Hello @Schwede66. Sorry for the annoyance, but I was wondering if you could tell me if an article I want to create will pass the notability requirements. It's about the plane crash at Timona Park in Feilding. CAA Report and an article about it. Kiwiz1338 (talk) 05:57, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The CAA report is a primary source and does not count towards notability. You’d need 3 articles of the calibre of the Stuff article to demonstrate notability, Kiwiz1338. Schwede66 07:31, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, awesome. Thanks for the help. Kiwiz1338 (talk) 09:00, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just a note. The incident resulted in an Airworthiness Directive (AD), so should warrant a stand-alone article according to Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Aircraft accidents and incidents. Kiwiz1338 (talk) 11:34, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ITN[edit]

Hi Schwede66, when you made this edit about adding back in the darts blurb, it looks like you also reverted changes to RD. Natg 19 (talk) 20:35, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Crikey! Something went terribly wrong there, Natg 19. I must have edited a prior version of the template when I slotted in that item. Thanks for letting me know; I've fixed it. Schwede66 20:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Golden Bay[edit]

Hi Axel, since I can't make the Golden Bay meet-up, I decided I'd do a Wikidata clean-up for Golden Bay. Everything in an 8km radius from the bay should now be in the right place - do you think any other areas would warrant a clean-up (e.g. if people are interested in taking photos?) --Prosperosity (talk) 02:43, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ha, I saw that you were going through a lot of articles, Prosperosity. Thanks for that but a real shame that you can't make it. I've never checked the LINZ Gazetteer against Wikidata completeness. Do you have an easy way of doing that? And having a look at the WikiShootMe set, I have learned that tidal creeks exist: Mullet Creek (Q32292230) – fascinating! Schwede66 03:31, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Kaipara Harbour is just full of the things - it frustrated me to no end that there were Wikipedia pages for rivers in the middle of the ocean!
I don't have an easy way of doing it, but what I'll often do is go section-by-section (I did the sandspit first, then worked my way down), matching them to LINZ or for streams to their mouths (sometimes tracing it in OpenStreetMap can be helpful, but is time consuming) and hope that I don't come across anything odd. So far only four odd places: one was misspelt so badly that I didn't realise what it was until later, one was a feature on a 1970s map but not in the LINZ database, one was a bay when LINZ only had the beach, and one was some old thing from an 1820s d'Urville map that has since been renamed! --Prosperosity (talk) 19:44, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Page protection request[edit]

Hi Axel, the redirect Filip Geljo is reguarly being fiddled with by IPs—I suspect the same person each time. When you've a moment, could you please put a low-level page protection on it? Odd Squad is the correct target for the redirect. Thanks, Beeswaxcandle (talk) 08:33, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Backlog at RfP[edit]

Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that I relisted myself at RFP/A four days ago, and since you were the one who reviewed my last request, I'm reaching out to see if you'd like to take a look again this time. It does seem that a few other users also also waiting for help at that page. Thanks in advance! BhamBoi (talk) 17:51, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lahau[edit]

In this edit, is "Lahau" a typo? I found some other spellings of Lahaul, but Lahau isn't one of them. Art LaPella (talk) 07:20, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, must be a typo. Sorry for that. Have fixed it. Schwede66 08:33, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Date Format Guidance in Citations[edit]

Hello, thank you for being so on top of reviewing edits and fixing minor issues, it's been super helpful.

Regarding this edit, you seem to have a script that fixes up date formats to match dmy, which also changes formats inside citation templates. According to the docs for Template:Use dmy dates if that template is included on the page, then the dates in Template:Citation will be correctly formatted, and that seems to be what happens. According to MOS:NUM, we do want the formats to be consistent, but it doesn't mention whether that applies to the markup, as opposed to the rendered page, which is handled automatically by the citation template if use_dmy_dates template is present. If this is the case, adjusting the date formats in citation templates would be unnecessary if use dmy is set. Personally I prefer to use ISO 8601 which is why I normally use that. Should I be using dmy instead, even though inside a citation template the date formatting will automatically be handled and the MOS seems to suggest this is acceptable? -- David Palmer aka cloventt (talk) 20:48, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kia ora Cloventt / David, yes, I'm using Wikipedia:MOSNUMscript to tidy date formats. And you are absolutely right that dates within a citation do not need straightening out if there's a dmy or mdy template present. The script, however, isn't clever enough to spot whether ISO 8601 does not need changing. I'm sure I've seen people complain about it on the user's talk page who maintains the script, but nothing's changed. You don't need to do anything differently. What I could do differently, if it's a bother to you, is not save the edit if it doesn't change anything other than within citation templates. Problem is that you don't know what it will change until you run the script, and if you've done prior edits, there's no way to dismiss the script's changes but to change afresh. Hence I generally save the edit if it's part of other edits. Schwede66 23:03, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No need to change what you're doing, it really doesn't bother me. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something incorrectly. Thanks! -- David Palmer aka cloventt (talk) 23:35, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Phomen Singh[edit]

Good morning! I'm looking into the DYK nomination for this article - it was previously in the queue but got bumped by an editor, but the editor no longer has any issues with the nomination. It seems to be left in limbo, now, not rejected but not in any queues. Do you know what's happened here? --Prosperosity (talk) 22:27, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Prosperosity, it seems that Kusma has an ongoing issue with this nomination. Or is there a parallel discussion somewhere else that points to the issues having been resolved? The way it stands, just going by what I read on the nomination page, this would need to be rejected at this juncture (which is most easily done via PSHAW). If it has been resolved, the nomination needs to be manually added back to the queue of unreviewed articles (i.e. this page). Let me know where this is at from your perspective. Schwede66 23:18, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
From my perspective, it seemed to be done and ready to go. Toadboy123 marked the page as 'resolved of issues' on 7 January, ALT2a was proposed on 21 January, and Kusma writing, "If everything is now cited correctly, I have no objections," on 23 January. --Prosperosity (talk) 23:45, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I must not have read the whole message. It needs to be put into the unapproved queue at this point. Schwede66 00:03, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I returned it to Template talk:Did you know when I pulled it. It should be fine if it gets another approval tick. The citations I found that did not support the text they were attached to have been dealt with, so as I said, I have no objections and there is no need to wait for any further approval from me. —Kusma (talk) 09:16, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks all. I left a note on the nomination page. Schwede66 08:05, 31 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:Dog Island Stamp, 2009.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Dog Island Stamp, 2009.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Vanjagenije (talk) 00:06, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For the sake of these notices on my talk page, I dispute the deletion rationale and contend that it would have been good if the nominator had actually read the rationale for why the two stamps qualify under non-free use. The full response is on the respective pages. Schwede66 06:48, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would also have been good if you actually read WP:Non-free content criteria. Criteria No. 8 is clear: Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. The topic of the article is the "Dog Island Lighthouse". The topic of the article i NOT "Depiction of the Dog Island Lighthouse on stamps". The image of the stamp is in no way useful to increase readers' understanding of the topic "Dog Island Lighthouse". Vanjagenije (talk) 23:55, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I disagree with that as well. I shall note here, though, that it is criterion 1 under which the deletion is listed, not 8. Schwede66 00:08, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I saw in the article's history the user(s) previously added not freely-licensed images in the past. Please, enlighten me if this a copyvio image and if such images should it be removed. Thanks. Alexeyevitch(talk) 11:20, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What you do is as follows (and I've done it already; this is for future reference):
  • on the page on Commons that holds the photo, you click the link in the left sidebar "nominate for deletion" and then write why the image should be deleted (link to nomination request)
  • then, you remove the photo from those pages of Wikipedia where it is used (in this case, just the article you identified; curiously, the image wasn't used on Tapsell's bio)
  • write a note for the user that uploading images found on the internet is a serious issue; I chose to write on their Wikipedia user talk page as that's where I'm an admin and can block in case of further copyviolations
Thanks for your report, Alexeyevitch! Schwede66 17:19, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New DYK Nomination for Victoria Square[edit]

Kia ora, I just added a bunch of extra info on POI in the square and wanted to nominate the article for a DYK about the Telephone Box War of 1988. The nomination page already exists, what is the process for nominating a page that has already been nominated before? -- David Palmer aka cloventt (talk) 09:44, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have bad news for you, Cloventt, as the Victoria Square article does not qualify for DYK. You can nominate under three different criteria:
  • new article (which obviously it isn't)
  • a 5-times expansion (it's been expanded 2.2 times in the last week)
  • a new GA
If you turn the Telephone Box War article into its standalone article, that would qualify as long as you nominate within 7 days of the content having been created. You'd do a manual nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Telephone Box War (2). If that looks too challenging, ask and I'll set it up. Schwede66 09:57, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ethics Workshop Participation Request[edit]

Hi Schwede66! We're conducting a series of participatory workshops with Wikipedia editors, administrators, researchers, and Wikimedia employees to discuss, and hopefully improve, Wikipedia's structures for online research (see meta research page). In an effort to get the right people in the room to discuss these topics, I'm reaching out here to see if you are interested in participating as an active administrator. We'd work with you to ensure this workshop can fit into your schedule, but are targeting end of April/early May. I'm happy to discuss any of these topics further here or on our talk page. Thanks, Zentavious. With international collaborations like this, it’s generally impossible to make that work for participants in the New Zealand time zone. I therefore pass. Schwede66 16:38, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, synchronous collaborations across time zones are challenging. I'm sorry we don't have the right accommodations set up. Thank you for the reply & consideration! Zentavious (talk) 14:36, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
