Oh indeed, I definitely will do that. Actually I have a very old friend who lives in Te Anau, which I believe is still kind of remote even after making the 24 hour journey around the world to get to NZ! Ah right, I guess I made the mistake of thinking it would be similar to going to Australia, which I've done a couple of times... I thought for a moment you were near to the ferry to Wellington, but I think my map scale was deceptive. Personally I just live in a small town called London, at the southern end of Britain... Honorific prefixes[edit]

Hi Schwede66, regarding this revert: there seems to be some variance as to where the honorifics "Sir"/"Dame" go in the infobox. A quick glance at the bio articles linked at New Zealand Order of Merit#Living grand and principal companions, for instance, will show that most cases put it in |honorific-prefix= instead of |name=. I suggest that it ought to be standardised this way round – this is already the prevailing convention across Wikipedia, not just for Kiwis but also for Brits. Yeah, I'm all for standardising things, Ravenpuff. "Sir"/"Dame" aren't honorifics, though; they are pre-nominal letters. I agree that guidance, e.g. MOS:PREFIX and MOS:SIR / MOS:DAME could be clearer. Schwede66 00:28, 6 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I concur with you on the need for standardisation and clearer guidance. But I note that the relevant MOS section already calls them honorific titles (although pre-nominals they also are), and says nothing about infobox placement; the first use of the name refers to the lead. Placing them in |honorific-prefix= is very much the usual convention – so if we want to standardise things that should be the way to go. Hi, on the newly created page Rakaia, alongside a couple of edits i'm happy to have included, you've suggested several date format changes - but from same MOS:NUM document that you linked, those seemed fine as I had them: 2024-01-07, i.e. "yyyy-mm-dd" It reads "...should all use the same format, which may be:" "the format used for publication dates in the article (see above);" "the format expected in the citation style adopted in the article; or" "yyyy-mm-dd"

I prefer the format you suggest - i think it's less confusing to read for readers who might confound the day/month. It's just there's a bot (Qbugbot) that has been creating a bunch of others such as this Ceratolasma, hence i was aiming for adding in more inline with its core format so many are roughly consistent. Ha, I saw that you were going through a lot of articles, Prosperosity. Thanks for that but a real shame that you can't make it. I've never checked the LINZ Gazetteer against Wikidata completeness. Do you have an easy way of doing that? And having a look at the WikiShootMe set, I have learned that tidal creeks exist: Mullet Creek (Q32292230) – fascinating! The Kaipara Harbour is just full of the things - it frustrated me to no end that there were Wikipedia pages for rivers in the middle of the ocean!
I don't have an easy way of doing it, but what I'll often do is go section-by-section (I did the sandspit first, then worked my way down), matching them to LINZ or for streams to their mouths (sometimes tracing it in OpenStreetMap can be helpful, but is time consuming) and hope that I don't come across anything odd. So far only four odd places: one was misspelt so badly that I didn't realise what it was until later, one was a feature on a 1970s map but not in the LINZ database, one was a bay when LINZ only had the beach, and one was some old thing from an 1820s d'Urville map that has since been renamed! --Prosperosity (talk) 19:44, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Date Format Guidance in Citations[edit]

Hello, thank you for being so on top of reviewing edits and fixing minor issues, it's been super helpful.

Regarding this edit, you seem to have a script that fixes up date formats to match dmy, which also changes formats inside citation templates. According to the docs for Template:Use dmy dates if that template is included on the page, then the dates in Template:Citation will be correctly formatted, and that seems to be what happens. According to MOS:NUM, we do want the formats to be consistent, but it doesn't mention whether that applies to the markup, as opposed to the rendered page, which is handled automatically by the citation template if use_dmy_dates template is present. If this is the case, adjusting the date formats in citation templates would be unnecessary if use dmy is set. Personally I prefer to use ISO 8601 which is why I normally use that. Should I be using dmy instead, even though inside a citation template the date formatting will automatically be handled and the MOS seems to suggest this is acceptable? -- David Palmer aka cloventt (talk) 20:48, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kia ora Cloventt / David, yes, I'm using Wikipedia:MOSNUMscript to tidy date formats. And you are absolutely right that dates within a citation do not need straightening out if there's a dmy or mdy template present. The script, however, isn't clever enough to spot whether ISO 8601 does not need changing. I'm sure I've seen people complain about it on the user's talk page who maintains the script, but nothing's changed. You don't need to do anything differently. What I could do differently, if it's a bother to you, is not save the edit if it doesn't change anything other than within citation templates. Problem is that you don't know what it will change until you run the script, and if you've done prior edits, there's no way to dismiss the script's changes but to change afresh. Prosperosity, it seems that Kusma has an ongoing issue with this nomination. Or is there a parallel discussion somewhere else that points to the issues having been resolved? The way it stands, just going by what I read on the nomination page, this would need to be rejected at this juncture (which is most easily done via PSHAW). If it has been resolved, the nomination needs to be manually added back to the queue of unreviewed articles (i.e. this page). Let me know where this is at from your perspective. For the sake of these notices on my talk page, I dispute the deletion rationale and contend that it would have been good if the nominator had actually read the rationale for why the two stamps qualify under non-free use. It would also have been good if you actually read WP:Non-free content criteria. Criteria No. 8 is clear: Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. The topic of the article is the "Dog Island Lighthouse". The topic of the article i NOT "Depiction of the Dog Island Lighthouse on stamps". Copyvio[edit]

Schwede66, on the Mayor of Rotorua article a user named Kcatena1010 added an image of Tania Tapsell that has an uncertian copyright status, right? The original source of the image is probably this news article from 2020.

I saw in the article's history the user(s) previously added not freely-licensed images in the past. Please, enlighten me if this a copyvio image and if such images should it be removed. Thanks. Alexeyevitch(talk) 11:20, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What you do is as follows (and I've done it already; this is for future reference):
  • on the page on Commons that holds the photo, you click the link in the left sidebar "nominate for deletion" and then write why the image should be deleted (link to nomination request)
  • then, you remove the photo from those pages of Wikipedia where it is used (in this case, just the article you identified; curiously, the image wasn't used on Tapsell's bio)
  • write a note for the user that uploading images found on the internet is a serious issue; I chose to write on their Wikipedia user talk page as that's where I'm an admin and can block in case of further copyviolations

New DYK Nomination for Victoria Square[edit]

Kia ora, I just added a bunch of extra info on POI in the square and wanted to nominate the article for a DYK about the Telephone Box War of 1988. I have bad news for you, Cloventt, as the Victoria Square article does not qualify for DYK. You can nominate under three different criteria:
  • new article (which obviously it isn't)
  • a 5-times expansion (it's been expanded 2.2 times in the last week)
  • a new GA
If you turn the Telephone Box War article into its standalone article, that would qualify as long as you nominate within 7 days of the content having been created. You'd do a manual nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Telephone Box War (2). If that looks too challenging, ask and I'll set it up. Schwede66 09:57, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
