Finding old edits[edit]

To find the edits you made on the since blanked talk page, open the page history, expand the list to 500 entries (you could edit the url to go up to 1000 edits but it isn't necessary in this case), and search for your name. There's also the "Filter revisions" which can be used to view history for a specified date range.-gadfium 04:20, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, thanks, gadfium. I've actually done some of the edits on that talk page in a way that they document what has gone on before because I stumbled across that user's underlying believe system that makes them edit outside of agreed norms. If it's needed, say because it goes to ANI, then I'll dig it out. Good suggestion, by the way, to stop editing until after the election. Schwede66 06:54, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mount Totumas cloud forest[edit]

Re this, it was just a straight-up oversight on my part, apologies. I created the template through the POTD helper and then didn't actually directly look at the generated output afterwards, hence why I missed the redlink. I guess I naively thought the Mount Totumas cloud forest might have its own article! Thanks for the tidy-up and I'll check more in the future.  — Amakuru (talk) 10:35, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I see. Thanks. I just couldn’t work out how that could happen. I haven’t used the helper myself but that explains it. Schwede66 15:45, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject banner shell[edit]

I have been trying to clear the vital articles maintenance category: [1]. Having the wikiproject banner shell in the other configuration makes articles show up there as being unassessed. Rreagan007 (talk) 00:47, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rreagan007 The solution is to add the assessment into the vital article template, but leave it for other wikiprojects in the banner shell. WP Biography similarly does not inherit the listas from the banner shell so that gets duplicated. I've done this at Talk:Peter Fraser and Talk:Michael Joseph Savage.-gadfium 01:07, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. Appreciate you chipping in, Gadfium! Schwede66 01:52, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

When to use convert[edit]

Thanks for updating the POTD caption and corresponding tortoise article, and indeed for all your work on the main page. You recommended me to look at how to use the convert template. I did, but what I couldn't find is any recommendation of when to use it. I mostly edit articles on obscure slugs and snails, a field where almost nobody has used anything but SI units for the best part of a century, even in US literature. Providing conversions to inches would seem anachronistic. This must be true of many other fields like astronomy or molecular biology. Yeah, maybe some tortoise hobyists might appreciate a measurement in inches (although not those where it lives in Madagascar), but is there any official guidance about this? Or should I just use common sense? JMCHutchinson (talk) 14:55, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your query, Jmchutchinson. If we put something on the main page, it should use both metric units and imperial units (in practice, United States customary units). If we don’t, it’ll show up as a complaint at Errors as part of the world can’t understand what they are looking at. Not sure whether that’s written down in guidance but it’s what happens in practice. Schwede66 17:43, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I’ve had a look in the manual of style and it is written down as per the above in MOS:UNIT. Schwede66 17:48, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for digging that out. Reading the MOS:UNIT at first does suggest that there should always be a conversion, but, hidden away, there is something of a get-out clause. One example given is American football (!), but I feel particularly relieved that, "in scientific articles the expected level of reader sophistication should be taken into account." In this spirit, I would agree that conversions should always be there on the main page, even if it is sometimes appropriate that they are absent in the article from which the blurbs are derived. JMCHutchinson (talk) 20:22, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Schwede66,

The reason that I added the words reverted here is simply that the line "...any electorate votes already cast will not be tallied" later in the paragraph makes no sense without an explanation as to why electorate votes would already have been cast before polling day. It's fine if you want it gone, but some form of explanation is, IMO, necessary close to where the electorate votes are mentioned. Cheers, Grutness...wha? 13:40, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings from Mohua, Grutness. Sorry for the revert. It should be easy enough to write some words explaining the nullification of votes already cast. Do you want to have a go or shall I? Schwede66 16:53, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. If you'd like to have a go, go for it! Hi from sunny Dunedin :) Grutness...wha? 01:12, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lake Wānaka: semi-protection[edit]

Hi @Schwede66, I think the semi-protection Lake Wānaka should be removed. Because not much vandalism is taking place on that article; the most recent test edit was more then 2 years ago, and vandalised more then 3 years ago. Yvanyblog (talk) 06:45, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been semi-protected since April 2020 and as one would expect, it hasn’t been vandalised since. But as per your request, I’ve removed the protection. If it starts up again, we can always restore the setting. Schwede66 13:10, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

November Articles for creation backlog drive[edit]

Hello Schwede66:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2500 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

re. the politics multihook nom page[edit]

Thanks for the update, Schwede -- hopefully this should be reviewed soon! Would you mind if I placed a collapse template on the extended discussion prior to finalizing the hook, so it looks less daunting to a reviewer? Right now it's a little tricky for people who aren't already familiar with the discussion to understand what's going on and what they need to review, and I'm worried it might take a while for people to be willing to review. It's also a lot to scroll past on WP:DYKN when looking at other nominations. Vaticidalprophet 04:50, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Vaticidalprophet, I reckon that's an excellent idea. Please do! Schwede66 05:00, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay[edit]

Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving discussion of OTD quality[edit]

Hi Schwede, I noticed you just rotated ERRORS. Fair enough on that one, but I think it might be a good idea to archive the OTD quality discussion on WT:OTD and maybe ping the participants that aren't likely to be watching that one (I watch it myself, so not needed) -- it's an ongoing discussion about a fairly contentious interpretation of an old rule, and imo needs to be ongoing somewhere that archives. Vaticidalprophet 01:19, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, it doesn’t have to be me who moves the discussion to another talk page. Anyone can, Vaticidalprophet. Schwede66 05:39, 18 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:32, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay (again)[edit]

Hi, @Schwede66:, I'm thinking of attending the Mohua Golden Bay meetup. I would be flying in from Sydney (preferably Air New Zealand, possibly Qantas) What city would I fly to (and when) and would it be possible for you to somehow organise me on a flight to & from Mohua. MargaretRDonald (talk) 20:04, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Kia ora MargaretRDonald, oh, that's exciting. You'd fly to Wellington and would from there use Golden Bay Air to get to Tākaka Aerodrome. That latter flight goes twice a day. You could book their flights online or I can do it for you (which would be a tad cheaper as I get frequent flyer discounts with them). I suggest you consider staying for a few days as there's quite a bit to see and do, and the area is rather pretty. I can give you a bed; just not the Fri to Sun when the event is on (the Friday is for the committee) and it's all full already. Schwede66 09:28, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - spelling correction question[edit]

Hi Schwede66,

I noticed you reverted some grammar and spelling edits I made to Alfred Ngaro's page.

As I have been editing mostly US articles and not AUS or NZ articles - is it better to adhere to US spelling for US only articles? I have noticed that US spelling is more common across most articles, so I wanted to clarify.

Thanks. Chavmen (talk) 00:15, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Chavmen, you maintain the English variant that an article is written in. For clarity, some articles have language variant tags that are visible in edit mode. Ngaro's article, for example, is tagged with {{Use New Zealand English|date=August 2014}}. Please read MOS:TIES. Schwede66 00:47, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks for letting me know. I am based in Australia so much easier for me to remember this. Cheers! Chavmen (talk) 00:56, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dashes script[edit]

Hi Schwede66, I just fixed a reference error caused by this edit. I think that the script shouldn't be changing unnamed parameters of the {{r}} template, since they are reference names which are character-sensitive (on the other hand it should be changing arguments of the |pages= etc. parameters since they are page ranges). Is it possible to upgrade the script that you're using to avoid this kind of problem? Best, Wham2001 (talk) 11:22, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, Wham2001, for firstly messing up the referencing template, and then secondly not replying to your message. I'm sure the script can be amended; Ohconfucius maintains it. I think User:Ohconfucius/dashes.js/header is the place to report issues like that. Do you want to post the above there? Schwede66 02:34, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No worries – it's a busy time of year IME and I haven't had chance to look at WP since I messaged you anyway. I'll post the message and ping you from there. Best, Wham2001 (talk) 10:50, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, and also for promoting today's phenomenal lead hook about Dalí Atomicus. I left a consideration at errors because I miss the painting's title. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:32, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Richard S. Hill[edit]

Kia ora! 1. Thanks for your assistance with this page.

2. As I'm pretty sure I've previously seen quotations in Header content, I included an apt one in this page. However, User: Abdullah rajil disapproves.

3. The first time he changed it, I reversed his edit, with a careful explanation.

4. He's reversed it again, this time introducing an egregious spelling error.

5. Of course I think my original is better, but I have thus far left it. I'm waiting to see what happens next, but I also do not want to get into a tussle with any other editor.

6. Do you have any advice?

7. I also removed your addition to my Talk page. Thank you for the honor, but I would prefer to choose what labels appear on my page.

Cheers, Tarkiwi25 (talk) 23:28, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your notes and queries, Tarkiwi25. Given that you are a relatively new editor, it's probably a good idea to take the advice of more established editors. Wikipedia is a surprisingly complex thing; there's heaps to learn:
  1. You are welcome.
  2. WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS is an argument that you should never use. WP:CITEFOOT tells you that citations should not be placed within, or on the same line as, section headings.
  3. It's good to use detailed edit summaries. Full marks.
  4. Fix spelling errors the moment you come across them.
  5. Good strategy.
  6. Whenever you get into a disagreement, the best next step is to take the issue to the article's talk page and start a discussion there. Ask whether there is policy or guidance that you can be pointed to.
  7. Sorry. And fair enough; it is your page after all.
I hope this is helpful. Feel free to ask further questions. Schwede66 20:09, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
kia ora, User:Schwede66, and thanks for a helpful reply.
Re 2: Otherstuffexists is pretty funny. Yep, bad rhetoric on my part. As for CITEFOOT, well, the chances of my finding that on my own were pretty slim, even if I'd known to look for it. Those odds are part of the reason I learn only a few new tricks each time I create a page that turns into a marathon. And then forget them before the next marathon.
Re 6: I'm guessing you provided the info now on the Richard S. Hill talk page. In context, it's more helpful than when I have seen those messages before, so thanks again.
Re 7: Most appreciated.
Your kindness is likely to be rewarded with more questions.

One of your images[edit]

Hi there. I've added one of your images to the related article Thongophone. I'm a bit hazy as to the actual etiquette of doing so, so if I've trodden on your toes feel free to remove it. Cheers. Daveosaurus (talk) 05:43, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nah, that's all good. It's a wiki; the material is there for anyone to use it for whatever they want to do with it. Thanks for letting me know, though; I'll give it a read. Schwede66 05:47, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Darn those dashes![edit]

Hi Schewede66, thanks for fixing the hyphens to dashes in the Wakefield article. I just realised that the Dictionary of Canadian Biography uses hyphens between the years in their volume numbers; will be more vigilant in the future about fixing it when I add a cite. :) Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 18:16, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That’s ok. It’s no trouble at all to run the dashes script, Mr Serjeant Buzfuz. Schwede66 18:24, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, Mr Serjeant Buzfuz, I've done a bit of digging about EG Wakefield's niece: Alice Wakefield (Q124059034) and her Wikitree entry. Turns out that Edward Augustus Freeman was her father-in-law. And I'm pretty sure that this is her husband (see her father-in-law's talk page why I think that): Harold Freeman
Her obituary is quite interesting (find a link in the Wikidata entry). And it does confirm that she was incredibly close to her uncle, but too young to care for him initially. Schwede66 06:30, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. Good detective work on your part! The Wakefield article is a hard one to work on; I know a fair bit about the Canadian stuff, but the rest of it is completely new to me; I'm learning about NZ by working on it, but couldn't contribute to that portion. Glad you're able to keep an eye on the article from the antipodean perspective :) Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 04:53, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
