Georgetown[edit]

Hi Schwede66,

First, thanks for the "autopatrolled" status. Sorry for the confusion over the suburb disambiguator, but it looks like there's a contradiction at WP:NCNZ - going by section 2 of dabbing, suburbs are treated the same as towns (which are covered in section 5, and would get region names as disambiguators), but section 4 says they get city names as dismbiguators. Grutness...wha? 03:36, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, good point about that contradiction, Grutness. I'm not sure what the first statement tried to achieve so I have removed it. Schwede66 03:44, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Viewership[edit]

Coincidentally I was looking at the stats yesterday, and Errors has 1,059 watchers compared to ITNC's 1,403. Not as big a difference as I was expecting but you’re right in that major updates are better discussed at the latter location. Stephen 09:46, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, that was a total guess on my part, Stephen. That's way higher watch numbers than what I would have expected. Schwede66 09:51, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Those pages go back years, and we’ve lost many along the way. I suspect actual active watchers is a small fraction of the system total. Best wishes, it’s good to have you around there. Stephen 09:56, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have to say that I often enjoy (and admire) your wise calls, Stephen. Schwede66 09:59, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant[edit]

Thanks for making me chuckle. Ovinus (talk) 23:05, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ovinus, my pleasure. I suspect I won't win the Tourism Board's promotion award but that's ok. In terms of pageviews, I suspect this hook will do well. Schwede66 23:09, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:FloridaArmy[edit]

His articles may be noteworthy, but they still need to be evaluated because I can spot several common grammar mistakes. I just had a question regarding auto-patrolled stuff.  DIVINE  13:50, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, DIVINE. Why are you telling me that? I cannot see an open application for autopatrolled for this user. Schwede66 16:40, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Such a silly of me. I am extremely sorry for wasting your time here [1]. Actually, sometimes mistakes happen, and I apologize for my mistake.  DIVINE  16:58, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely no problem, DIVINE. Would you like to be given a rundown how this all works? Schwede66 22:35, 21 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't get you?  DIVINE  15:31, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have the impression that you are confusing the concepts of patrolling and being auto patrolled. Hence my offer to provide an explanation of how this all works, DIVINE. Schwede66 19:06, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure I'd love to know more about it.  DIVINE  19:08, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe it's just a terminology question but the process of reviewing new articles is called "patrolling" (no "auto" involved) and then there's a user group called "auto patrolled". Once an editor belongs to that group (or has that flag), their articles no longer show up as needing patrolling as the auto-patrol flag does that automatically. Basically, the flag triggers an auto-patrol process. Being auto-patrolled makes no difference to an individual editor but is of benefit to article reviewers as that editor's new articles won't add to the backlog of articles in need of new article review. Makes sense, DIVINE? Schwede66 19:16, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I really know how autopatrol work, but I was confused why autopatrol work automatically for the AFC reviewer even if he/she doesn't create the article?  DIVINE  04:17, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Note sure what you mean exactly, DIVINE. If you refer to an AFC reviewer moving an article from draft space to main space, the article would be automatically patrolled if the reviewer has the autopatrolled flag. Technically, it's the reviewer who publishes the draft and therefore their user rights apply. Schwede66 00:39, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah got you, thankyou.  DIVINE  04:30, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding WP:PERM/A[edit]

Thank you for your response at WP:PERM/A. I got your point. Just because I don't want to stack my comments one upon another on that page, I am leaving you this message on talk page. I feel my Contributions demonstrate enough competencies for the role. Creating 65+ articles in a row without any single article nominated for deletion demonstrates that I have knowledge of notability criteria. Adding sources even a few, demonstrates I understand verifiability. User:Tulsi/CSD log: Nominating various userpages and articles sometimes, demonstrate I understand What Wikipedia is not. Addressing to maintenance tags demonstrate I am a responsible editor. As noted there, I am not perfect, but I am very much improved. Infact, I believe nobody is perfect; anyone can make mistakes and I am one of them. Judging based on past is what disappoints me. I rest my case. I am sorry if I bother you from my comments over there and all along. Have a good day. Kind regards, — Tulsi 24x7 04:01, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Tulsi. Note that my first response was for Blablubbs's benefit as they are a new reviewer at WP:PERM/A. Schwede66 04:14, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rating own articles[edit]

Hi Schwede66, a small question for you. Is it OK to rate the class/importance of my own articles, if it seems straightforward? For example, I would have been reasonably confident classing Fantail Falls as a stub/low importance. Or should I leave it for another editor regardless? I'm happy either way, but just wondered if I could save someone else (usually you!) a task. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 04:34, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good question! Before you get super-confident about rating and have done a lot of it, I wouldn't touch B-class or high-importance for your own work. But everything else is fair game and indeed helpful. If anyone else reads this and works on NZ articles, the most useful thing is to drop {{WPNZ}} onto the talk page. Schwede66 04:45, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Aubernas[edit]

Following on from original post about the disruptive editing of Aubernas editing on May 20, this user continues to persistently violate certain rules despite repeated warnings. Today, on Israel, they added original research that had been reverted two months ago by multiple editors, and on Ariel Sharon, they added material to the lede that wasn't in the body of the article. On 2010 United Kingdom general election, they added a statement with no source and an odd edit summary. I removed it and they readded it with sources, none of which actually supported the material and violated WP:SYNTH. They also removed sourced content on Affirmative action by vaguely calling it incorrect and the language unencyclopedic. These are just some of their edits that I have personally corrected in the last week. They have had many other edits reverted for similar reasons recently. In addition, they appear to be editing as IP 222.153.45.227 on the same pages as their main account. I brought this up to them on their talk page but was ignored. Not to say that Aubernas doesn't make any productive edits, but despite constant warnings, they continue the same disruptive editing and violate the same rules. I'm not sure what the solution is but this disruptive editing needs to be stopped. GreenCows (talk) 04:48, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, GreenCows. I've left a note for Aubernas and tagged you. Hopefully it helps steer things in the right direction. ANI is an option but I suggest that you should seek further discussion first. And hopefully you'll get a response at your next attempt. Schwede66 08:33, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. It was clear that it was some kind of mistake, No Swan So Fine. Is your plan to expand the article so that it becomes eligible for DYK? Schwede66 09:07, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard from the West Coast

Tuesday 5 July, 2022

Kia ora koutou and thank you all for your hard work over the last couple of weeks! We've had a cold snap here on the Coast, but at least the rain's slackened off and I've been able to get out on the blue sunny days and take snapshots • Schwede66 has been sorting out the Paparoa Range, cleaning up mountain wikidata, and expanding the Pororari River • We have a new article about the Truman Track, and a great photo selection for Cave Creek • Our hardest worker has been Marshalc, creating new articles on the Pancake Rocks, Bullock Creek, and the Inland Pack Track amongst others • I took a field trip to Punakaiki and sorted out the Wikidata and photos for every scenic spot between the Strongman Mine Memorial (Q112859334) and Hatters Bay (Q32217346) • If you're still thinking about helping, we could do with expanding the Punakaiki article, and sorting the best Pancake Rocks photos into a Commons gallery • Greymouth photographer Jase Blair donated some beautiful photos of Paparoa National Park which need using • The Avatar moth from Denniston Plateau (with its newly-improved article) will be RNZ's Critter of the Week on Friday • New resource: Mark Pickering's book The Coastal Journey (2010) (Q112841717) is free to download and a great reference • This coming weekend I'm off to Moana on Lake Brunner (to photograph the bays, walks, and especially the Kotuku Model Bungalow (those are all Start-quality icons, hint hint) • Check out the Project page to see jobs there are to do, and how you can help out! Postcard from the West Coast

Tuesday 19 July, 2022

Kia ora koutou and once again thank you for all your mahi over the last fortnight • We've been working on articles on the Lake Brunner area; the lake's article is looking heaps better, and it's in the queue for DYK • Marshelec, Swede66, and Turnagra have been the putting in lots of effort, with new articles on the Croesus Track, Mount Te Kinga, and the Pike19 Memorial Track amongst others • We've rescued lots of great photos from Flickr and other public collections • But these weren't enough: I did two field trips to photograph up and down the Punakaiki coast, and halfway around the Arnold Valley and Lake Brunner; numerous new Commons categories and Wikidata images resulted • Progress at the lake was derailed by having to be filmed for the evening news, editing Wikipedia in the open air while being attacked by sandflies (our project mascot is well chosen) • Over the next two weeks the focus shifts to Karamea, all the caves and walks of the Ōpārara Basin, and the Heaphy Track • There is plenty to do: the Wangapeka Track, Honeycomb Hill Cave, and Kahurangi National Park need massive work, so I'm stoked that Marshall and Lyn are joining me for a few days this weekend at Karamea to help • This is an area that critically relies on tourism, and it's embarassing the coverage is so bad in Wikipedia • Check out the Project page to see jobs there are to do, and how you can help out! Districts[edit]

From you're comments at Wikipedia:New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board/Archive 29#Related question about districts User:Crouch, Swale/New Zealand districts#Missing lists districts that are missing and if so if a district council article exists. To answer you're question about setting up articles for councils or not generally I'd follow the rule, which is similar to WP:UKDISTRICTS the main difference as far as I can see between New Zealand to Germany and England is that NZ doesn't have municipalities (Gemeinden) so that test doesn't apply. Generally if its decided to have an article on the district (because the boundaries are quite different to the settlement) such as Colchester/Borough of Colchester then the district council generally shouldn't have a standalone article namely Colchester Borough Council redirects to the district. If the boundaries of the district are similar to the settlement often only 1 article exists for both such as Leicester (where City of Leicester redirects) however then a district council namely Leicester City Council is normally a good idea. Its generally not desirable to have separate articles for district and district council unless the council is important or there is a significant amount of content for it. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:15, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. Schwede66 19:44, 25 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To apply those tests for Christchurch (1) urban area is smaller with lots of rural land to the south namely Banks Peninsula (2) Lyttelton is clearly a distinct settlement (3) urban area i smaller and doesn't spill into other districts, (4) it has significant boundary changes in 1989 namely at least 3 other districts were merged (5) may be less clear as according to the article Rangiora and Kaiapoi in Waimakariri district are in the informal region of Greater Christchurch. No other city other than New Plymouth (which the district doesn't appear to hold city status) has an article though so it may need more discussion otherwise Christchurch may be the only city that is split. Kia ora koutou and thanks for helping with this project • It's been a busy fortnight: I visited Karamea with Marshall and Lyn, and we spent the day on the Fenian Track, which now has its own article and over 100 photos of the valley, the local flora and fauna, and the three caves we explored • Yes, there were cave wētā and spiders • I also got to meet with local historians, photographers, and nature buffs who are keen to share photos and deluged me with print materials • The double hook featuring the Paparoa Track and the Pororari River articles appeared in DYK on 25 July and they got 3000 readers between them, but the accompanying DOC video clip got over 400,000 views! • The newly-created Copland Track article was in DYK the next day, and Lake Brunner will feature soon • Great work, everyone • Coming up: Te Wahipounamu and the Haast Pass—I'll be spending three days exploring and photographing the area, and could definitely do with help fleshing out the skeletal coverage of the lakes, localities, rivers, and wetlands of that beautiful part of the world • Check out the Project page to see the north-to-south list for South Westland, and pick something to work on; ask me for a job if you don't have one! New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022[edit]

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Schwede66,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.
Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

"personal attack"[edit]

Can you explain how this edit is a "personal attack" please? The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 00:06, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Abusive, defamatory, or derogatory phrases based on race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religious or political beliefs, disability, ethnicity, nationality, etc. directed against another editor or a group of editors. I've highlighted some key parts to enable better comprehension. Basically, if you want to express your frustrations, I would stay away from terms like "useless admins". Would you now please self-revert, The Rambling Man? Schwede66 00:13, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I said admins were useless. And most of them are. That's not personal. Get a grip. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 00:14, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Can I please ask you to stay away from my talk page, User:The Rambling Man? I find you way too abrasive; not something I need as a volunteer editor. Schwede66 00:21, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Naturally. As long as you stay away from anything which involves competent admin oversight. I think that's a fair trade. The Rambling Man (Keep wearing the mask...) 00:23, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Plus, don't forget WP:ADMINCOND, we can always question your behaviour. If you're roaming around claiming NPA where it clearly doesn't apply, I'll call you out every day of the week and happily seek your de-sysop for this kind of behaviour. That you clearly don't understand the meaning of a personal attack is quite troubling. But not surprising in any sense. Hope I don't bump into you again doing this sort of thing. Cheers! Parmjeet Parmar[edit]

You mentioned my name in the edit summary when you fixed the date formats in this article. I didn't use a script – I made that blunder all on by myself when I fixed the original date error, and simply didn't notice the specified format. I apologize for making extra work, but I'm happy that you pointed it out because it's probably not the only time I've done it, but I'll pay closer attention to this issue going forward.

Thanks for getting back to me, User:Ira Leviton. To run the date script is simple and straightforward; I don’t regard it as extra work. I just wondered whether it’s possible to avoid introducing the mix of date formats in the first instance. I’m glad to learn that it is. Thanks for being so accommodating! NZ covid response edits, Neutral point of view[edit]

Kia Ora! Thank you for your assistance. Good faith edits, what does it mean? Neutral point of view: Please help me by pointing out what was not written with NPOV. Can you please help me edit the information to add. 1. The second outbreak and how it happened. MiQ vulnerability... The man who was walking through and they think was infected by someone who had passed reception. 2. The fact that elimination was still working and community cases were declining when the elimination strategy was abandoned. 3. The requirement laid out in the elimination strategy for "safe and efficacious" vaccines. This is important information without which analyzing the series of events by reading the article would lead to confusion. Thank you! Sorry, I am a bit of a n00b at this. KleisthenesII (talk) 06:35, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Assume good faith and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, KleisthenesII. What you added with this edit is not in the two sources given at the end of the sentence. Hence, you are editorialising, which we simply cannot have with a controversial topic. If you want to get started on Wikipedia, I suggest you pick a more straightforward topic. If it has to be COVID, then I suggest that you make suggestions on the article's talk page along the following lines: Change "this sentence" to "that sentence" and here's my source. More seasoned editors will review that suggestion and if ok, add the content to the article. Schwede66 06:50, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That is not how it works Schwede66. You are the one misinforming the public. I have references. Instead of being helpful you tried to censor me. You are the one who is not neutral. I assumed good faith from you until now. But you have revealed you bad faith intentions with your attitude, censorship, and unhelpfulness to give accurate information. Your status as admin should be removed until you are able to demonstrate a fact-based approach referenced by reliable evidence (aka sources). Thanks for nothing and thanks for your dad dishonesty and lack of consideration. #SwedenGate KleisthenesII (talk) 00:23, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You are no more than a misinforming, politically biased, edit warrior. KleisthenesII (talk) 00:24, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You even tried to mischaracterize and demean me and censor me. That is absolutely disgusting behaviour. You false allegations about my abilities or character shows how discriminatory you are. I firmly condemn your attitude and participation in wikipedia. It is outside the spirit of community and truthfulness intended. KleisthenesII (talk) 00:28, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I asked for help regarding adding references and instead you did not help, but rather deleted and misinformed instead of helping clarify the events so they are not disinforming. You are the one with poor judgement and bad faith who should be censored. Not me. You purposefully spread disinformation. Dishonest. KleisthenesII (talk) 00:33, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You should calm down a bit. Schwede66 03:30, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard from the West Coast

Monday 15 Aug, 2022

Kia ora koutou; we're coming up to the home stretch! • I got back from South Westland with about 400 photos to upload and categorise into Commons • The DOC team down there are very excited about our project; they're busy reopening the Haast-Paringa Cattle Track with a new swingbridge, and I promised we would create an article with photos of all the huts • Archives New Zealand have a wonderful collection of tourist publicity photos on DigitalNZ; you could search them for pics of West Coast places for articles (see the ones I used in Pleasant Flat) • There's still plenty to do over the last fortnight of the project—if you could find some time to pick one of the biggest gaps and have a go at filling it, that would be great • in Haast, we need articles on Okuru (currently a redirect), Hannahs Clearing, the Roaring Billy and Thunder Creek Falls, and Ship Creek; I have photos of all of them • You could also check back through the Punakaiki, Lake Brunner, and North Westland lists for anything that needs expanding • In other news, I'm running an online workshop 7 pm August 23rd on Adding Photos to Commons; enrolment's free, share with any keen photographers you know • We're also having a Wikiblitz this coming Sunday to try to improve the articles about West Coast reptiles, and could use help • Thank you for all your hard work; I'd like to organise an online meetup on Zoom at the end of the project to look back at what we've done and have a think about next steps; will send some possible times • Ka kite ano. — Giantflightlessbirds

Kia ora koutou; well, it's time to wrap up this project • What a wonderful and short ten weeks it's been; I've really appreciated all the mahi people have put into improving articles about the West Coast • There's a summary of what we've managed to achieve in the final report • Briefly: 24 new articles, 5 of them in DYK, 974 edits to 193 articles, adding 73,800 words and 653 citations • We uploaded 1126 photos into numerous new Commons categories • Standouts for me were Schwede66's sorting out all the Paparoa mountains named after famous scientists, Marshelec's work on Karamea and Bullock Creek, and Turnagra creating the Copland Track article • There are small prizes going out to those three, but I also want to acknowledge all the effort of Paora, Chocmilk03, and Gertrude206—great stuff • I'm about to head off to Europe for a month, to attend the Wikimedia Summit and learn what European Wikipedians are up to, but despite time zones would like to have an online catchup with participants soon • Thank you again for all your hard work; ka kite ano and I hope we'll have another bash at the West Coast again soon. Don't be strangers. — Giantflightlessbirds

Thank you so much for all your work for the West Coast Wikipedian at Large (The Sequel) project, and I've a small thank-you prize for you which I'll pop into the post. Your help wrangling Wikidata, improving track articles, and nudging us to do DYKs was much appreciated. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 18:18, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Eva Duldig[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Eva Duldig at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) at your nomination's entry and respond there at your earliest convenience. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! --evrik (talk) 01:21, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Just seeing this now (I am the IP). Can't turn to it right away, but will. Thanks all for your help. I'm unclear what the images problems are btw. Also, I will try to make sure there are not four, but no more than three, citations to any sentence, as was suggested. --2603:7000:2143:8500:7C61:A970:2A01:21AE (talk) 04:13, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The images that are "problematic" are not out of copyright. The license that shows on Flickr is incorrect. They'll get deleted from Wikimedia Commons; that process takes a week. It's nothing to worry about; it's just one of those things. Thanks for chipping in. No hurry – nothing of substance can happen until the images have been deleted, so we have a week. Schwede66 04:17, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think I see. So if I want to notify the license provider, and request that if possible a correct license be displayed on Flickr (so that commercial use is allowed I assume), what license (or licenses) would that consist of? If we can have them in the article, I think that would be best, no? Many thanks. And I also thought this was just an amazing story. The stuff of movies. I've only had time to fix the "four refs not three" problem. And make some other fixes/clarifications. Of note you will see - the concept of "enemy alien" did in fact apply in Australia. Someone thought it did not I gather. It may be "hooky." Also, possibly that she was 2? Not sure how to get the accurate hooky stuff in, while keeping it crisp, but I wonder about those two points. Your thoughts? (Also, this might be good to get up while interest in tennis is high due to the US Open .. but I guess one cannot have it all). Thanks again. --2603:7000:2143:8500:7C61:A970:2A01:21AE (talk) 05:08, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Photos: The copyright sits with the original photographer. Problem is that they aren't known, so there's no way out of this.
Enemy alien: Yes, I did see that. The source provided talked about "enemy aliens" in the context of Singapore prisoners, not Australian prisoners. So yes, the original hook fact was right but at the time, it wasn't supported by the correct source. Basically, where it uses the term in the article, it needs to be referenced. And then in the DYK nomination, this source needs to be stated as backing up the hook fact. If you stick the right source into the article and document in an edit summary that it's done, I can amend the DYK nomination and craft a hook with reference that uses that term. Or you could have a go at the DYK stuff yourself, but it's a bit fiddly (if you know what I mean). Schwede66 05:20, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As to the original photographer, might not the flickr provider know the identity? As to the other point, got it. Yes, I guess I provided the wrong source. Does this suffice (these refs are in the article)? [2][3] There is a nice general discussion of the underlying legislation here. For some photos, that may be the case. For others (e.g. 1940s or sports photos taken in the 1960s), I doubt it. One photo was obviously taken from a magazine and you'll never get their permission. Schwede66 05:49, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Need for licence[edit]

Hi Schwede. This photo is publicly available and I am assured by the owner Auckland Library that I can publish it. Now wiki is threatening to remove it. What can I do? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Peter%27s_College,_Auckland#/media/File:St_Peter's_College_1938,_construction_crew.jpg Yelsorc (talk) 00:48, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In short: nothing. Copyright is a very complex topic, Yelsorc. It might have the correct NZ license (I haven’t looked) but it’s not old enough to meet US licensing requirements. And as Wikipedia's servers are based in the US, that’s the problem. Sorry. Schwede66 09:18, 25 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of content[edit]

“Content” is pushing it, but I’m sure you’ll fix the awful sentence structure to an encyclopaedic standard now. — HTGS (talk) 06:10, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have an issue with your change of content. Just don't mark it as a minor edit. And don't worry - I'm not picking on you. I've reverted many a senior editor for wrongly marking edits as minor when they are not. And if you aren't sure that it wasn't a minor edit, please have a read of the link that I provided in the edit summary. Schwede66 06:13, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No offence taken, etc. Let’s just say I would have texted rather than emailed, given the choice. — HTGS (talk) 06:32, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article importance[edit]

While I’m here, I may as well ask: how do you assess article importance? You clearly saw me demote some articles from top to high; that was based on a) low readership relative to other top and high importance articles, and b) the sense that “high” is still pretty high (ahem). Not an argument—especially on Te Pūkenga, being so new—just curious. — HTGS (talk) 06:17, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. It's a very subjective exercise. With Te Pūkenga: "10,000 staff, 280,000 students, and assets worth NZ$2 billion" - if they aren't top importance with those stats, what other outfit in NZ would be? Grutness once postulated that within each Wikiproject, the distribution of Top - High - Mid - Low should be xyz. I can't quite recall the figures but noticed at the time that we didn't have anywhere near as many top importance articles as per the distribution suggested by Grutness. Hence I thought about what could be uprated and did so. But as I say, it is very subjective. Schwede66 06:24, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Pushing articles up into top was next on the list, but hearing you put it that way maybe I’ll look at the task the other way around. I’d been planning to organise thoughts and then post a few stats to the WP too, so might pay to get input over there anyway. — HTGS (talk) 06:41, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure that was me? I did do a couple of essays on the importance of particular articles (the one on major roads within cities is still a rule of thumb I think), but I don't remember that one offhand! If I had to estimate I'd say 1 to 5 to 25, but As the number of WP articles continues to grow, so too will the lower figures. Grutness...wha? 06:53, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I’m pretty sure it was you, Grutness. Many, many years ago, though. Schwede66 08:33, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Board of Trustees election[edit]

Thank you for supporting the NPP initiative to improve WMF support of the Page Curation tools. Another way you can help is by voting in the Board of Trustees election. The next Board composition might be giving attention to software development. The election closes on 6 September at 23:59 UTC. View candidate statement videos and Vote Here. Good morning. Could you revert the unilateral de-updating by one user, which has un-updated the template. I was a bit late to revert it. Thanks Bumbubookworm (talk) 00:03, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bumbubookworm Are you asking to restore to User:Ravenpuff's revision and revert User:EEng? Schwede66 00:09, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes please Bumbubookworm (talk) 00:13, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Done Schwede66 00:16, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again Bumbubookworm (talk) 03:13, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me, but what are you bunch doing completely changing the selection the day before it goes live? EEng 00:52, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I did a proper update a few days ago. Last year's version was not updated and had a lot of articles with referencing problems that you reverted back in. Bumbubookworm (talk) 03:13, 12 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
"A proper update" doesn't mean anything. If I'm seeing things correctly, of the articles listed last year there's only one (Attica) that you moved to "ineligible" -- so not "a lot of articles". Mostly what you did was to just an arbitrarily swap of one bunch of articles for another. Next time use an explanatory edit summary so people have some idea what you're doing. EEng 18:52, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bumbubookworm I agree that detailed edit summaries go a long way towards letting other editors know what's going on. Schwede66 05:49, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

French-Swiss[edit]

Hi, I've just noticed you reverted my change of "French-Swiss" to "French–Swiss" on ITN. Why was that? French-Swiss would imply that he's a Swiss person of French ethnicity or something like that, like African-American, but I'm not aware of that being the case. The article implies that he's simply a dual national,so the construct is simply a shorthand for "French and Swiss". Per MOS:ENBETWEEN that should always be an en-dash not a hyphen. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 08:44, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No, I didn’t, Amakuru. You were reverted by Stephen. And Stephen was correct as it needs a hyphen, not an endash, as per MOS:DUALNATIONALITIES. Schwede66 10:46, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

::Well there's no need to be so rude about it. I was polite in my query to you, and I do apologise for my error in thinking you'd made the change, I saw in the history you'd mentioned the "French-Swiss" issue. But either way, the change is wrong. He isn't "French-Swiss" in the sense implied by MOS:DUALNATIONALITIES, which would be a French speaking Swiss person, he is French–Swiss in the sense of French (from France) and also Swiss (from Switzerland). I guess I'll have to raise this at ERRORS. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 11:03, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, withdrawing this comment and apologies for my tone. I think I need to check further on this as I'm not sure. Have a good evening.  — Amakuru (talk) 11:23, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I hope I haven't caused you any stress or upset, Amakuru. Schwede66 18:24, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine, I was just a little stressed this morning, having to adjust back to the normal daily routine of going to work after a holiday weekend and not getting enough sleep. Hope all's well at your end.  — Amakuru (talk) 22:57, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
All good, Amakuru. Most things are well at my end apart from just having had my flight home cancelled. The alternative arrangements will see me home 3 hours later. Not what you need when your work day started at 7 am... Schwede66 03:22, 21 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
