  • A newly revamped database report can help identify users who may be eligible to be autopatrolled.
  • A potentially compromised account from 2001–2002 attempted to request resysop. Please practice appropriate account security by using a unique password for Wikipedia, and consider enabling two-factor authentication. Currently around 17% of admins have enabled 2FA, up from 16% in February 2017.
  • Did you know: On 29 June 2017, there were 1,261 administrators on the English Wikipedia – the exact number of administrators as there were ten years ago on 29 June 2007. Since that time, the English Wikipedia has grown from 1.85 million articles to over 5.43 million.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter[edit]

Hello Schwede66, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

Technology update:

  • Several requests have been put into Phabractor to increase usability of the New Pages Feed and the Page Curation toolbar. For more details or to suggest improvements go to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Suggested improvements
  • The tutorial has been updated to include links to the following useful userscripts. If you were not aware of them, they could be useful in your efforts reviewing new pages:

Hi. I can't find any evidence that the above person is no longer a List MP. Has she been demoted down the list, or was there some other reason? Akld guy (talk) 07:16, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand your question to be honest; the article (or at least the parlbox) says that she is a list MP. I'm on holiday and don't have time to look into it. Schwede66 08:00, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm referring to your removal of MP from honorific-suffix in the box. Wondering why it was done and whether you're mistaken. Akld guy (talk) 08:04, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. MP is simply not shown as a suffix. Don't know where the rules are written down. I think it was Mattlore who's gone through all the NZ bios and removed them all. Schwede66 13:25, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm...did I? Sounds like something I might do but I don't recall doing it. I understood consensus to be that we don't have a honorific for MP's in New Zealand. However, as Schwede is away, Akld guy I suggest we transfer this to the New Zealand notice board and get a consensus there? Mattlore (talk) 20:37, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Schwede, when something is entered against honorific-suffix, honorific does not appear in the box, but the entry (MP in this case) appears all by itself under the person's name at the top of the box. Mattlore, I believe that a list MP is entitled to the suffix MP. Meanwhile, I've re-instated the entry. Look directly under her name in the box. Akld guy (talk) 20:53, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

Thank you for your additions of citation needed tags to the poorly sourced page, Russell Young (tennis).

Unfortunately, user keeps removing all the {{fact}} tags.

User also keeps adding back wholly unsourced info and unreferenced claims with no evidence.

What can be done here?

Sagecandor (talk) 17:31, 19 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Sagecandor, thanks for your query. As you may have seen, I'm on holiday, hence the delay in responding. While I'm keeping an eye on things via mobile, that's a clumsy tool for showing diffs etc. Now I've got an opportunity to respond.
When there's a citation needed tag, that refers to the preceding material in that paragraph. As such, with this edit you removed some material that did not have a citation needed tag, and that can be somewhat irritating to other editors. Personally, I would never have removed the DSO material in the first instance, but would have looked for a citation instead. You will no doubt find an entry in The London Gazette, which is available online.
You then got into a minor tussle with Anmccaff. Their revert was very close to being disruptive editing. Trying to sort it out on the article's talk page is a good way of going about it. I also suggest that you try and find a cite for the DSO in the source that I suggested.
I hope that's helpful. I suggest to both of you that you keep up your good work; you are obviously both here for the same good reason. Schwede66 08:07, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Schwede66. A favor, if I might, once you are back where editing is convenient? Could you take a moment to look over Sagecandor's, and my, recent edits; last 48 hours or so? If afterwards, you still see that revert as disruptive, or close to it, then please open it at ANI; otherwise please strike through the remark above. Thanks. Anmccaff (talk) 14:50, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Back from holidays at end of August. Schwede66 14:54, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. See you (metaphorically) then. Anmccaff (talk) 14:57, 21 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Have you had a chance to look at this? Anmccaff (talk) 14:11, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. And from tomorrow, I'll be more or less offline again for another week. Schwede66 18:09, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Debbie Griffiths[edit]

Hi Schwede66. This article may not ever be suitable for the mainspace but would like to ask your opinion. I have added a few more sources since you last checked. Let me know if you think it can go to the mainspace. I will otherwise leave it or might just delete it. Not much else I can find! Understand fully if there is not much I can do. I have also started Draft:Holly Pollock but will leave this in the background for now. Im asking all of this as the sources have a big range between each source so there might not be much point going further with them. --TheDomain (talk) 07:53, 3 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright Jacinda Ardern[edit]

Many apologies! I certainly wasn't claiming ownership of the image. Is it likely this is what happened to the previous image for Jacinda as well? I only replaced it because the previous one disappeared and was left blank. Is there any way to find out if a picture is freely licensed, or is it a guessing game for the most part? And why is google images allowed to display images with a source without it being an infringement? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clesam11 (talkcontribs) 07:10, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Clesam11 – nobody said that you were claiming ownership. But you helped yourself to somebody else's copyrighted image; that's what the problem was. Copyright is a very complicated area. To be on the safe side, take the photos yourself that you upload. If you really want to know more about it, have a read on Commons. The rules on and for Wikipedia & Wikimedia Commons are quite different from those that apply to Google etc. Schwede66 11:23, 11 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Potential edit war[edit]

On the Opinion polling for the New Zealand general election, 2017 page there is a bit of toing and froing regarding a footnote and would appreciate your input to resolve this when you can. However, what I'm more concerned about is the other users conduct, which seems to me to be rather combative and not assuming good faith. Kiwichris (talk) 07:36, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Bigg-Wither[edit]

Hi - thanks for adding all that extra details for CBW. I added in the correct dates. I've never edited a wiki page before - so I gave it a go on the dates. All those points you added I know as true as we have all that in our family records. Charles was my 3rd Great Grandfather. I have a photo of him - but am unsure how to upload or to annotate correctly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hdmi1080 (talkcontribs) 11:43, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hdmi1080 Go to commons and give the upload a go. It's obviously not your own photo (i.e. not taken by you), so click the relevant box. In the field "Another reason not mentioned above", copy-paste the following code into that field: {{PD-New Zealand}} If it works, let me know (i.e. put the resulting file name into a reply). If it doesn't work, let me know and we'll figure something else out. Schwede66 12:01, 22 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community Tech team is working with the community to implement the autoconfirmed article creation trial. The trial is currently set to start on 7 September 2017, pending final approval of the technical features.
  • Please remember to focus on the quality of review: correct tagging of articles and not tagbombing are important. Searching for potential copyright violations is also important, and it can be aided by Earwig's Copyvio Detector, which can be added to your toolbar for ease of use with this user script.

Phil Healey[edit]

Hi Schwede - I took a look at Phil Healey and found that there is coverage about him in the NZ Herald and on Stuff. There are a number of items on various sports related sites as well covering a period from about 2006. Not sure if he would be considered notable in his field though as these are all NZ sites. Kelvin Davis[edit]

Your suggested page move (which seems reasonable to me) needs to go through WP:RM because it isn't just a case of moving Kelvin Davis to Kelvin Davis (footballer), as the Kelvin Davis (disambiguation) page would also need to be moved to Kelvin Davis. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 10:48, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I slipped up. Sorry, Jmorrison230582. Before I do the final move (i.e. the dab page taking the place of the previous primary topic), I like to tidy up incoming links so that there aren't dozens of dab links created for a wee while. And once I had dealt with the 100 or so pages that needed fixing (finding a half dozen articles that wrongly pointed to the goalkeeper in the process), I forgot to then also move the dab page. I'll do so now.
Then again, the edit summary on the goalkeeper's page doesn't quite align with what you appear to be saying above. Are you, after all, suggesting that it should go through a move request? I interpreted the above as 'only a move request will result in somebody coming along who can delete the target page, so that the dab page can be moved'. Curling[edit]

Sorry, mate. Got a notification of a page getting linked that I once created. I sensed it was something brand-new, but didn't look who was working on it. Should have. Sorry. Schwede66 12:17, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Clean Start?[edit]

Hi, thanks for your suggestion but I'm not sure why you think I should read the Clean Start page? Another editor also insinuated that I was a "Sock Puppet", I imagine this is the same thing you are talking about?

This is my first time editing Wikipedia - it's not that hard to understand how the system works. I've been browsing the site for years, am a computer programmer and had a few hours to play around with in the last couple of days and figured out how to do things. It's not rocket science, I'm sure I'm getting protocols wrong, but I'm not an experienced editor coming back under an new alias as people are accusing.

CelenaSkaggs (talk) 19:07, 14 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

CelenaSkaggs, I shall explain.
Step 1 – check your contributions:
10 Sep 2017 – your first day on WP
11 Sep 2017 – your second day on WP
14 Sep 2017 – your third (active) day on WP
Step 2 – run contributions history through the duck test as to whether this is a new or experienced user.
Outcome - it quacked. Schwede66 06:11, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you are wrong. I found an article i thought should be deleted Vincenzo Langella, i signed up to Wiki, and figured out how to delete it. I did a few more, but the process was pretty laborious. At some point i read that I could automate deletions by Twinkle. I tried, it said i needed to wait 4 days to set it up.

I waited 4 days, and installed Twinkle. It's easy, you just click on a link and it auto-installs. I started to use Twinkle.

It's not rocket science you know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CelenaSkaggs (talkcontribs) 16:34, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Reviewer Newsletter[edit]

Hello Schwede66, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 14304 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a day.
  • Currently there are 532 pages in the backlog that were created by non-autoconfirmed users before WP:ACTRIAL. The NPP project is undertaking a drive to clear these pages from the backlog before they hit the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing a few today!

Technology update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on creating a new filter for page curation that will allow new page patrollers to filter by extended confirmed status. For more information see: T175225

General project update:

  • On 14 September 2017 the English Wikipedia began the autoconfirmed article creation trial. For a six month period, creation of articles in the mainspace of the English Wikipedia will be restricted to users with autoconfirmed status. New users who attempt article creation will now be redirected to a newly designed landing page.
  • Before clicking on a reference or external link while reviewing a page, please be careful that the site looks trustworthy. If you have a question about the safety of clicking on a link, it is better not to click on it.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

Hi Schwede66. Just saw the hard work you are doing with the pages for new MPs. This is regardin Liz Craig. While I know wikipedia isn't primary source, can we use the qualifications listed in Liz Craig's staff page at Otago Uni's School of Medicine? http://www.otago.ac.nz/dsm/people/expertise/profile/index.html?id=827

She's listed as Senior lecturer with the following qualifications:MB ChB DipObs DipPaeds MPH PhD FAFPHM

This 2012 article https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/poverty-time-wake lists her as "director of Otago University's NZ Child and Youth Epidemiology Service". I guess the other is she's an academic with some published papers. Not sure if it is worth tracking them down to list. I found 2 attributed to Craig, E. Can't read the 2nd article so may not be her. http://www.cpag.org.nz/assets/Health/120301%20NZMJChildHeath%20NT.pdf and Craig, E., Kerr, N., & McDonald, G. (2017).
