Article Move[edit]

Re: Shorinji Kempo Thank you, I'm still a bit new to all this. I'll make an effort to read the help articles and brush up on proper procedure. --Jpowell 10:12, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalisation accusation[edit]

Hello, you've just accused me of vandalising a page. I was just wondering exactly which page I was supposed to have vandelised? I have done nothing but add serious content to any article.

re: ICP[edit]

Well, some feel the only reason the bit about Eminem mentioning ICP was put into the article was because Eminem dissed ICP. Eminem is not exactly an unbiased source of information about ICP, after all. It seems to cross over the line from simply reporting about a hip-hop rivalry, to actually taking sides in it, which wikipedia shouldn't do. -Kasreyn 06:08, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An Esperanzial note[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Canada[edit]

Hi there! I'd like to invite you to explore Wikimedia Canada, and create a list of people interested in forming a local chapter for our nation. A local chapter will help promote and improve the organization, within our great nation. We'd also like to encourage everyone to suggest projects for our national chapter to participate in. Hope to see you there!--DarkEvil 17:11, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pool 3[edit]

Dear Sasquatch,

I would like you please take a few seconds to vote in Pool 3 in cartoon dispute. I strongly believe it can help to get a comprimise. Thanks 216.248.124.210 10:19, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I would have restored this and moved it to userspace, than deleted the redirect and left a note telling the user to {{db}} when they wree finished. That way you wouldn't have to worry about waiting for the user to copy/paste and deleteing it afterwards.

Another Esperanzial note...[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

It never ends![edit]

It's me, the always hapless & amusing 24.162.17.96/Voice of Treason. I'm not even sure what you can do for me here, but Wikipedia logged me out, and not having committed my password to memory I went to have a new one emailed. BUT - I have yet to receive a thing. So I'm not even sure how I can check to see if I put my email address in correct or if it's even THERE. I'm in sort of a pickle, as you might tell. Any advice or way of helping me from your end? Thanks. 24.162.17.96 17:19, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mediation will be needed[edit]

In the kafir article there is now a new link to a site that, to me, looks like kind of a hate site. I'm pretty sure there will be need of mediation soon on that topic.

As my personal view, I think that a link more is always better than a link less, but for outside links, I don't know an appropriate place to put comments or warnings on the factual accuracy.

Please have a look.

The Infidel 20:40, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Might be not exactly mediation --- just something to put out the fire before ist starts. The Infidel 21:42, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

spaces[edit]

No, it wasn't just spaces. There are a whole bunch of duplicated footnotes and the footnotes now seem to be out of order. –Joke 02:59, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, the footnote system is incredibly frustrating. I think moving to cite.php will improve things somewhat, but it is still confusing to edit pages using that technology. That's a problem with Wikipedia. It's trying to balance two competing goals: being very easy to edit for newbies, and having complicated markup for writing encyclopedia articles. –Joke 03:07, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks much for moving the page. However, I wasn't aware of Live in Europe (TransAtlantic album). If you could move that one too, it would be much appreciated. :) --Snaxe920 01:38, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User - Batman2005[edit]

Was saying he had a hard on for my talk page civil? Probably not. Was it true...clearly. For reasons unknown to me, the User (J.J.Sagnella) I'd never heard of decided to continuously change my talk page just because it didn't say what he wanted. That is vandalism at its very best, yet I got blocked? Batman2005 21:44, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Digging myself a deeper hole? Is that a threat? There were no vandalism warnings, there was a note about a page that I made when I initially started editing here that was then removed as I had not read the information about what can and cannot be posted here. What we had was a case of some random user taking an overactive interest in my talk page, a talk page which he had no reason to have an opinion on, I should think that the editors here have something better to do than vandalise talk pages, I guess that guy proved me wrong. Batman2005 02:04, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Sasquatch, I thought mediation was going well for a while, but now we have reached a sort of an impasse. Iantresman is attacking the other editors [1] and User:Elerner is having some kind of circular conversation with me [2] because he would rather infer what the reference I gave him says rather than read it or question any of his assumptions about general relativity. Anyways, if you could please lend a hand, it would be very helpful. –Joke 16:09, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sasquatch. We seemed to have arrived at a reasonable version when Joshua started to reverting to earlier version that no one else supported. I replied at lenght, pointing out things like blatant mis-quotes, but he conitually reverted. Now he has got protection for his version , that only he supports. What gives here?Elerner 04:14, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

azeri POV pusher(s)[edit]

Hey Sas how have you been lately? I would really like your help in keeping an eye on user baku87. He is from azerbaijan and he recently joined wiki and is now adding baised edits to articles, mainly the Military of Armenia article and the Military of Azerbaijan article. I hope you will be able to help me with this problem, which has been escalating. Now they have three pro azeri users ganging up on me and trying to start a wiki war, which is always useless.

I also think that baku87 may have a sockpuppet, the new user's name is druffc. He just joined, and he edited some things on the Military of Armenia article which he claimed as being POV, but then added azeri POV. I am hoping you will take time to look at this problem and if it needs be, protect the Military of Armenia from edits.

Please get back to me as soon as possible, I really need your help.--Moosh88 19:58, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

personal attacks[edit]

First of all I'd like to mention, that showing the cartoons on the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy article page is not a consensus, but rather a majority decision.

I'm sorry, that I disagree, that those cartoon images are not personal attacks.

WP:NPA starts with "Do not make personal attacks anywhere in Wikipedia." in bold letters, so I can't see, why it should be valid to personally (religion is very personal) attack a billion people in an article, while it's not valid to attack one person on the talk page. WP:NPA furthermore states, that religious epithets are not allowed even if the contributor is a member of a purported cult.

I have already removed my request for deletion of the cartoons on the 6. of March, because I've been willing to accept a linkimage compromise, so muslim readers can read the article without being insulted by the cartoons. Unfortunately most of the current editors are actively trying to push away every editor, who wants to bring in some muslim views on that issue, which makes the article very biased. Although Wikipedia is based in Florida, I don't think it's the idea of Wikipedia to only represent a "western" view on that issue. -- Raphael1 00:22, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FIDE Federations[edit]

You redirected FIDE Federations to FIDE calling this list "unencyclopedic". The comparison with the UN-members might be superflous, but there are also lists of member States for the United Nations and FIFA. If they have a place in Wikipedia, I don't see why this list is uncencyclopedic. Rook wave 09:12, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1[edit]

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2[edit]

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Brian Leiter 3RR Warning[edit]

I didn't appreciate the tone of your "warning" for a few reasons. 1)The unregistered user I was in this "revert war" with violated the 3RR before I did, and I warned him/her about it. 2)I repeatedly tried to engage this user in a dialogue about the content and offered to compromise and he continued reverting the page and falsely labelling my edits "vandalism". 3) I never referred to his edits as vandalism; instead, as mentioned above, I repeatedly reminded him that my edits were not vandalism and sought a compromise solution. I would really appreciate it if you would edit your comment on my talk page -- as it stands it creates a false impression of my actions with regard to this matter. Interestingstuffadder 19:25, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, 24 hours have passed since my edit, so I am out of the 3RR danger zone, friend. Interestingstuffadder 00:06, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your response was completely reasonable. I admit I got a little bit annoyed that he kept on reverting the section (which I did not initially add, by the way) and ignored my suggestions that he revise it into something agreeable to both of us...I was in the wrong for continuing the silly war. Thanks. Interestingstuffadder 00:58, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reading through the block logs[edit]

Hey Sasquatch. I've only been an editor for 5 or 6 months now, so please forgive me if I am overstepping my bounds, but it seems you blocked an IP (67.103.130.64) for 6 months for one vandalism edit, granted this was his or her only edit. Maybe I can't see the rest of his or her edits. Isn't this a bit too harsh? I'm only asking to get to understand Wikipedia policy better, not to step on any toes.  :) BlueGoose 00:39, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A-Channel[edit]

A-Channel most certainly does still exist. See CHWI-TV, CIVI-TV, CHRO-TV, CFPL-TV, CKVR-TV and CKNX-TV. And the commercial programming that airs on Access is not associated with Citytv outside of Alberta; it's associated with the A-Channel stations I just listed. Bearcat 22:04, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I meant things like Smallville and Monk and America's Next Top Model; outside of Alberta that stuff airs on the stations that are still branded as A-Channel, not the Citytv stations. It's all the same company, yeah, but they maintain two systems with different programming. Bearcat 06:52, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MEDIATION REQUEST -- RE: STEPHANIE ADAMS DISCREPANCY[edit]

The article on Stephanie Adams is no longer being edited from an objective standpoint. A group of users are maliciously ad vigorously removing factual comments that have been added by GODDESSY due to a frivolous discrepancy and are decreasing the quality of the article substantially.

We ask that you take a look at it and proceed with mediation and/or have the page fully protected.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3[edit]

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.
