i need your help this is a ip user on this article removing a source/content from a article without forming a conserius because i think when you remove a source you should get a consensus first before doing that type of edit. i have ask them do do that a few times but they just keep going back and just removing the soruce/content anyway. first where can we go to sort this out second i know i properly not handle this perfectly either. i do not want to break the 3rr rule which i think i may be close too if i have not already. i do not want to get any one in trouble but one of us may end up in trouble anyway. if you or amyone else you looks into this deems it that way. so any help you can give me or tell me where i can go to get this matter solve that would be great thanks.Oo7565 (talk) 10:23, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Your unfriendly message

Dear OhanaUnited. I am very puzzled by your recent warning (!) on my talk page. I was active in initiating the discussion about the improvement of the main portals page as you could see here and here. All the improvements I implemented were in good faith and after considerable time allowed for feedback. For the stars in question I did not change the colour, I actually introduced them as a better way of highlighting Featured Portals. The chosen colour was based on the visual effect I found most appealing, but of course anybody can have a different oppinion. I clearly searched for feedback and clearly stated that I have nothing against reverting any of these changes if the community thinks the previous version was better. In this context please be aware that your message appears to be assumption of bad faith and I perceive it as severly unpolite. --Elekhh (talk) 01:02, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

I've commented at Elekhh's talkpage. Thanks. -- Quiddity (talk) 02:29, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Did something get edited recently? I'm completely confused as to why you are now describing Elekhh's actions as "verge of reckless" and suggesting incompetence. Check your diffs, and please respond to my note at the bottom of that thread. Thanks. -- Quiddity (talk) 17:40, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

An/I

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.--Crossmr (talk) 23:55, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

I've closed the discussion as a couple of commentators had said that further discussion was unproductive, and I took the view that there was nothing for ANI to do in terms of taking administrative action. However, I'm sure you'll have seen that at least one previously uninvolved commentator described your threat to block Elekhh (talk · contribs) as a mistake and an overreaction; Elekhh has asked me whether I would recommend taking the discussion to another forum, and I have said at ANI "I would be very surprised if OU reacted in the same way if your paths crossed again in future after you made an edit with which he profoundly disagreed. ... I think it would be best for all parties to leave this behind them and move on, even if not entirely happy with the way things have gone." I hope this covers matters, but if you wanted to issue any further words of conciliation or assurance, that's a matter for you. Regards, and happy editing. BencherliteTalk 06:05, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Newsletter

GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

SPI Clerk Training

Hello, I saw that you are an SPI clerk. I was wondering if you were open to training users (trainee program), as I would like to join. Cheers, A8x (talk) 16:57, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Ok, that's no problem. Can you recommend any other users who would be able to train me? A8x (talk) 17:34, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
I am somewhat familiar with the SPI process, I did file this report quite awhile back. However, after a year long wikibreak, do see that the bot is down and things have changed a bit. I re-read the process to re-familiarize myself yesterday, and i think I still have a good grasp on how it runs. A8x (talk) 17:45, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
I did notice that, but I was not aware of the template change. I will read up on the process some more, and also try to find a trainer (as you are taking a break). A8x (talk) 17:59, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Environmental record task force

Hi OhanaUnited!

I was delighted to find the Environmental Record task force project on Wikipedia, which I see you are coordinating: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Environment/Environmental_Record_task_force

I updated the Samsung Electronics page, which used to have an "Environmental record" section, which had been removed because it was too generic. The info I posted is rich with citations, and I hope that others will agree that it's fair to all sides (the company and environmentalists).

Anyways, I plan to do a few more of these for the other electronics makers on Greenpeace's guide to greener electronics list (see http://www.greenpeace.org/electronics ). \

I'd be delighted to hear your thoughts about the current state of the task force, and what you think could help it grow to a point where top electronics brands -- companies and their new products -- all have an environmental record section on their Wikipedia page.

Thanks for pointing it out to me. I hadn't visited it for a long time. It seems to have progressed a lot since then. However I very soon realised my limitations as I am not a professional biologist nor do I have access to adequate scientific articles. Its a great idea. Though I really dont know how we can leverage Wikipedia and Wikispecies to have a better combined experience. AshLin (talk) 14:52, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I'll keep your last statement in mind. Should I find anything authoritative, I shall surely consider adding it to Wikispecies. AshLin (talk) 03:21, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

good?

Does ArbCom really thinks Frank is a suitable candidate for being a CU? OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:24, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

This might make him the best candidate. Some people are so fixated on socks. Socks are really bad, no question. But when there is a content dispute, the validity of the edits is the most important thing. Immature people run to the CU for everything clogging up the CU system. Clogging up the system, the toilet, the sewer, all bad. The CU is great for multiple voting. Frank is not abrasive, one of the problems that Jimbo said in a newspaper editorial that was rampant online, so that's really great. Frank is one of the best people listed, though he's in a tight race for that distinction with LessHeardVanU. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 20:01, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

move

Hi I'm proposing a move to a contentious title of diaoyu/senkaku islands. Please come to take a look: (Discuss)Senkaku IslandsPinnacle Islands — A recent discussion about the controversial use of Japanese name over a controversial land seems to suggest that neither Senkaku and Diaoyu is predominate common name. Search results show that both names are common, in which the Japanese one yields more results in Google Book search, while the Chinese name yields more in Google News and General Google search. The title was hence moved to Pinnacle Islands following the example of Liancourt Rocks and Sea of Japan, which neglects who administrate and controls the place, but pick up a neutral generally known name. In this case, although the name Pinnacle Islands does not seem to be predominately popular than the rest of two, it achieves the highest degree of neutrality required by wp:name. An admin (nihonjoe) and I have moved the page to Pinnacle Islands for neutrality, but the move is disputed by a user. --Winstonlighter (talk) 05:23, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Adopt-a-user reminder

Hello, I have completed a general cleanup of the adopter information page for the adopt-a-user project, located here. During my cleanup, I have removed several inactive and retired users. In order to provide interested adoptees with an easy location to find adopters, it is essential that the page be up-to-date with the latest information possible. Thus:

  • If you are no longer interested in being an adopter, please remove yourself from the list.
  • If you are still interested, please check the list to see if any information needs to be updated or added - especially your availability. Thank you.
  • You are receiving this message because you are listed as an adopter here.

An update from adopt a user

Hi there OhanaUnited! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Once again, thank you for participating in the adopt-a-user program! If you wish to respond to this post, please message me on my talk page.

The Tireless Contributor Barnstar

Is that really necessary? There are several support comments and WP:CHES can hopefully deal with any issues that arise while Espresso Addict isn't around. Of all the reasons to close, this seems quite avoidable. Nev1 (talk) 11:47, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

"It was agreed by many parties that there is room for improvement." Really? I must say that I don't recognise that analysis of the discussion at all.

  • I supported, and reconfirmed my support during the discussion (see below).
  • The JPS supported.
  • Mhockey's comments were agreed by him to relate to project management than portal improvement; he/she did not express support for, or opposition to, promotion.
  • Fetchcomms made some comments (NB not stated as an "oppose"). Nev1 disagreed with Fetchcomms, as did I, but Fetchcomms never replied to our points.
  • Dincher supported after Fetchcomms' comments, and so must be taken not to have agreed with them.

Overall, plenty of support, no declared opposition and the only unresolved comments had a consensus against their necessity. Where are the "many parties" agreeing room for improvement, I ask? BencherliteTalk 00:49, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

OK, there must be some international variation in the meaning of the word "qualify" of which I was previously unaware. I was using "wikt:qualify" in the fourth sense given there ("to modify, limit, restrict or moderate something") i.e. "Overall, I think that the minor points raised by Fetchcomms aren't enough to make me qualify my support" = "Overall, I think that the minor points raised by Fetchcomms aren't enough to make me restrict or modify my support." Incidentally, if I had intended to remove my support, I would have struck through it (I've been reviewing at featured content discussions for long enough to know that), and, also, if you thought my position was ambiguous you could have asked – particularly because I also said "there's more than one way of getting a portal looking good and, even though I might not have done everything like this, I don't think the overall result is at all bad." I'm not sure how that phrase can be read as a removal of support, but anyway... If this unfortunate misunderstanding was the only reason for the portal's failure, then would you consider relisting and / or reclosing it? BencherliteTalk 16:40, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
As I didn't, and still don't, see how my additional comment was ambiguous unless there is another meaning of "qualify" in the version of English with which you are more familiar, then of course I'm not going to see that it could possibly be read as unambiguous. I don't think that I'm at fault for the communication problem here, as you put it. If, though, you tell me that "qualify" means something different for you, then I'll remember that for the future as a BRITENG variation to be avoided in discussions.
However, if you think that I am being inconsistent by supporting and then opposing in different parts of the conversation, then you of course can me ask for clarification before you close. As for timing of the closure, I didn't comment upon that because (clearly mistakenly) I thought that two or three people not agreeing with Fetchcomms's minor points would remove the need for EA to be around to make any changes to win Fetchcomms's approval.
As for EA being inactive and therefore possibly making the portal fail "well-maintained" in the future, that is a fair point; however, there is a WikiProject behind the portal, and I can also point you to many more portals where no changes have been made to the non-automatic or rotated content since promotion without any complaint or FPOR. In fact, if you're looking for FPo related work, there are some discussions at WP:FPOR to which you can contribute, and I have others lined up to nominate (rather than have too many under review at the same time). I was obviously not specific enough. I was very clear to myself about Jackiestud not having edited those articles, my point, not made well, was that they both concentrated on articles to do with the subject of matriarchy and mother goddesses. I'd forgotten about SPI data being out of date, I should have raised this when I first had my suspicions, but I let AGF get in my way. I'm also familiar with Snoozlepet as a constructive contributor to airport articles, and I wouldn't really think he'd be vandalizing articles. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 04:15, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

{including your reply for context} References shouldn't be removed, even though it's not in English. OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:17, 2 December 2010 (UTC) {endquote}
Did you read what I said? I said nothing about language; I said it's outdated. It says it starts on the 26th of November; that's past, so that doesn't belong on the page any longer. Even if it was a mistake to remove it, it's not vandalism unless there's a clear reason to believe it's not in good faith. Heimstern Läufer (talk) 04:22, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
If the flight is already in operation then the reference is no longer needed (eventhough if the language is not in English). The flight started November 26, 2010. Snoozlepet (talk) 04:24, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

Hey OhanaUnited,

I am not sure how to go about doing this, but a checkuser report that I submitted that you took part in may have another addition. I found the user Rootsie contributions, an IP, another IP, Mercedes Cordoba which has a virtually identical history and editing style as the others involved in this case. Can I add that on, or should I start another report?

Thank you - Theornamentalist (talk) 19:39, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Done, thank you. - Theornamentalist (talk) 19:49, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Even the trial end, BLP violations are much more important. The page is semi-protected, and as you can see on its history it is not enough. Could you re-add it? Tbh®tchTalk © Happy Holidays 05:09, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for clarify it. Tbh®tchTalk © Happy Holidays 06:06, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

OK, this seems to be more complicated than I thought it was, so I've unblocked for now. I wasn't aware of the existence of that page, which isn't very surprising since it isn't linked to from anywhere, wasn't tagged as a guideline until yesterday and seems to be generally ignored. I understand (sort of) why CU may be inappropriate, but why is the matter being closed altogether? Thanks for your attention - JohnInDC (talk) 20:34, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

(That is to say, I can see why a policy of not connecting named accounts to IPs makes sense; but that seems to be precisely what was done in prior cases involving this user and I'm not sure I understand the difference here.) JohnInDC (talk) 20:40, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I haven't got any particular axe to grind here, so I can let it go; but I have to say I am a bit mystified by decision to decline. It looks like a pretty common request, routinely granted in the past. If in fact such requests are not proper, and if the absence of a confirmed CU ends the matter, how does one ever identify an IP user as a sock of a named (and banned) user? JohnInDC (talk) 21:29, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
I've blocked the IP on behavioural match, and because the IP matches networks with IPs that I have previously associated with G.-M. Cupertino. SPI is mainly about behaviour, and nothing about a decline from a checkuser prevents an admin from blocking.—Kww(talk) 21:45, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassador Program

Hi! Thanks for signing the Online Ambassador interest list. We're gearing up for the next term right now, and the Wikipedia Ambassador Program will be supporting considerably more courses, with considerably more student activity... possibly upwards of 500 students who will need mentors.

If you're still interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:12, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
