WikiProject Environment

Hi and welcome to Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment its good to have you on board. As for your comments relating to sources, it is far more important to cite scientific sources than a lot of the online crap that is available. Employ the same referencing protocols you use as referencing work for your degree. I keep track of the waste management related articles so I will make a point of looking at any inclusions you wish to add. Thanks for making the environmental user box. --Alex 13:23, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Phobia Userboxes

Hey Ohana!

Do you think there should be some userboxes about people's phobias? I think this would be a neat way to tell more about people. Benosaurus 21:18, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

MapleStory MP3 files

No idea. There used to be a link on the MapleStory that led to a list of them, but I'm not sure where it went. I get mine directly from the data files so I haven't looked into it. -- Prod-You 04:41, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Hola comrade!

Hi there Ohanaunited.

Thanks for creating that environmental protection userbox, not only does it look good and allow users like us to show our support for this ridiculously worthy cause but it also promotes the mingling of like minded conservationist type wikipedians. Its good to meet another uni. student studying biology who contributes to wikipedia too. Hahaha, I can't believe that people will actually delete factual info. on global warming! Thats unbelievable.. well they must have a really strong case to prove global warming isn't happening if they feel the need to destroy accounts of evidence that it is.. I agree about the annoying editors who get pedantic about referencing, its frustrating, university lecturers, what with their high qualifications are pretty reliable sources after all. Heheh, I've only just started encountering problems with other wikipedians now.. take a look at the bottom of the discussion page for the Kakapo article.. feedback is needed to resolve this issue so feel free to honestly chip in.

Anyways dude, best of luck with your studies also and should see you around, Cheers, Kotare 01:56, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Environment Assessment Scale

Hi Ohana,

I think it could well be a good idea. It has taken some degree of time before WikiProject Environment has got enough regular contributors to make it a reality, however I think we now have critical mass!--Alex 08:25, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Edit count number

How do you keep track of edit numbers? OhanaUnited 17:01, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ohana,
There are a variety of edit counting tools. The one I use most often is "Wannabe Kate", a tool developed by Interiot (there are others listed on my userpage). Hope this helps! Happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 17:08, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, take everything with a grain of salt, of course. Even a very minor spelling correction counts as an edit, so your milage may vary. Best wishes, Firsfron of Ronchester 17:13, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
People notice, don't worry. Barnstars aren't the only thing to get people to notice your hard work - Do what I do & keep a detailed register of all the stuff you've done on your user page. Someone will come by eventually & if you edit enough times, someone will be impressed. You're too new an editor to be worried about edit counts - relax & enjoy your time. God knows you don't want to end up like me worrying about your edits every second lol... :) Spawn Man 05:29, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
But personally, I think that it's the quality that counts and not the quantity. Doing 100 spelling or grammar edits is not as good as writing (or re-write a section) of an article. This is the problem of Wikipedia. Nothing except barnstar recognize the quality of the edits. OhanaUnited 05:21, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, getting an article up to Good Article or Featured Article status is also an indication that you're making quality edits. Anyway, best of luck, Firsfron of Ronchester 05:50, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Adding assessment scale to template

The project Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment is about to start doing assessment scale, so what should I do? I am totally lost and need someone to point a direction to get things started. The template already exist (e.g. Talk:Hydrogen economy). It just needs to add the parameter for assessment scale. I have asked in a couple of places and they point to other directions where I couldn't get an answer. OhanaUnited 14:42, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Using the bot is what you're looking for. Try reading over that. I have created the first category, Category:Environment articles by quality. Create the subcategories if you know how to. I'll try to help out later tonight. The current {{Environment}} does not accept ratings. I'll see if I can fix that. It might help if you look over some examples. MahangaTalk to me
Ok, I think I got everything set up. Check out the assessment page, Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment/Assessment for more information. Let know if you have any questions. All that is needed is to start rating articles. MahangaTalk to me 16:09, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar! I copied the Assessment page from the video game project, which is why there were some links pointing to it. If you want to assess articles, I highly recommend using User talk:Outriggr/metadatatest.js. It's incredibly helpful and cuts down time 10 fold. You'll have to request he add the Environment WikiProject. MahangaTalk to me 19:10, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

environment ratings

You should not be changing those two pages. A bot takes care of that. It's run like every other day, but you can run it manually if wish. Btw, I think I removed the importance option from the template, because it wasn't working. The class should work, though.

I just tried using Outriggr's bot and it's adding the wrong template. It's adding the project template, rather than the environment template. I rated Talk:Butanol fuel manually, as 'B', and while it doesn't appear in those two pages immediately, it does appear in Category:B-Class Environment articles immediately. If you were to run the bot manually, you would see Butanol fuel appear in the link you mentioned and the 'B' count would be updated in the statistics page. Does that answer your question? :)MahangaTalk to me 03:41, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

The bot runs every other day no matter if there were changes. For more information on how the bot works, head over to [TitoXD's great blog entry http://titoxd.blogspot.com/2007/03/wp10-assessment-scale.html]. It won't double-count the #articles in the ratings as far I can tell. I'll run the bot manually and see what happens to make sure. I'm not bothered by the questions. In fact, I like them. :) MahangaTalk to me 13:55, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Edit: I ran the bot and everything was updated corrected. No double counts or anything like that. Cheers. MahangaTalk to me 14:17, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Eco-Village China

I am very confused about where I am in this discussion. I was trying to respond to a message from OhanaUnited. How can I do that (re discussion on using wikis for an eco-village project in China)? thanks, Huck User:Huckrorick 18:14, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Thank you, Ohana!
Congratulations to you on passing 500 edits! You know, the first ones are always the hardest. Run-of-the-river hydroelectricity, an article you created and worked on extensively, is a great-looking short article. Keep up the great work! Happy editing, Firsfron of Ronchester 20:08, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Down again...

When I try to add a template to Computer recycling, all it says is "An unassessed article from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia [On] • [Hide] • [Off]" even after I manually added the template. OhanaUnited 05:41, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

If I'm not mistaken, I think the answer is to capitalize the word "Environment" in your monobook.js parameter "assessmentMyProjects". I added "Environment" to mine, and it worked. Now, I should really make the script case-independent if this is the reason you can't get it to work. But in the meantime, just change your monobook.js as above. –Outriggr § 06:00, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

User Template Warnings

Are you aware of the User Warning Templates at WP:UTM? They are a series of warnings that can be given to a user when they do bad (or good) things. In general, they get level 1, 2, 3 and 4 warnings. If their behavior persists, you can report their behavior to WP:AIV and they can get blocked for some period of time.

You can see a brief explanation and see how I do it on my user page. Thanks for helping with Wikipedia! wrp103 (Bill Pringle) 01:58, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Andrew, thanks for dropping in and offering your kind words about my work on the global dimming article. I knew nothing about global dimming until someone at work asked me about Pan evaporation. So I wrote an article about it. But then the global dimming article did not talk about pan evaporation so I fixed it and so on. I have learned a lot from working on these two articles. I really have enjoyed working with the project so far too. Thanks. Kgrr 02:39, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

In-universe vs. out of universe

From a quick look at Star Wars, it's mostly written from an out of universe style. Basically, that means it covers the film from the perspective of the "real world", for example, its cultural impact, its sales/box-office figures, and so on. There is also a plot summary, but in conjunction with all the other things, that's totally acceptable! Now, on Star Wars, we're talking about a culturally-iconic film with a tremendous amount of mainstream coverage. In that case, you're going to see a very long article! In the case of Gundam SEED, you're just not looking at the same amount of cultural and mainstream impact, so an out-of-universe article is going to be much shorter. Same with Gunbound. And yes, if a ton of "in-game" or "in-universe" cruft keeps creeping in, it will eventually be pruned or stubbed. The Star Wars article is longer because more out-of-universe source material is available. That's exactly as it should be. There is not, and never should be, an attempt to be "fair" to any given set of fans or to any given work of fiction. We write as much out-of-universe as the sources available justify, no more, no less. Seraphimblade Talk to me 19:52, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

a-class

That is very strange. I removed the banner and it still shows up as A-class! It must be some error by the script. Try mentioning it to Outriggr. Good catch. MahangaTalk 17:49, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

總而言之,非常謝謝你!!!!Tsungyenlee (Talk to me~)、(Contribs) 14:52, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Sure! We absolutely should translate it first~ However, I don't really think I could do well on that( You might already found out how poor my Eng. is by reading the translated part of the article......). I'm afraid that you have to pay more attention on this article. There must be lots of places needing correction. So I'd like to thank you first for helping me out.Tsungyenlee (converse)、(Contribs) 14:56, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

list-class

Not all projects seem to have information about it, but it's pretty self-explanatory. If an article is a list, then you'd add class=list. You'll need to modify your projects banner if you want that option. I found a project w/ some information. See Wikipedia:WikiProject_Religion/Assessment#Frequently_asked_questions MahangaTalk 16:49, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Adding list to the banner doesn't create the category, you have to create it manually. It's right Category:List-Class Environment articles. Check my edit.[1] Notice how I added a colon (:) in front of the categories. That's so that the category appears as a link and so the page is not added to the category. Just so you know. Another thing you might like to know {{tl|environment}} creates {{environment}}.
You'll need to create categories for template, dab, and category (Wikipedia:WikiProject Environment/Assessment and then populate them with articles. Btw, I don't think these types are checked by the bot. Hope that helps, let me know if you have more questions. MahangaTalk 22:34, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
Just a heads up, I fixed the categories [2] MahangaTalk 02:55, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Wikify barnstar

Heya, yeh I can dig out the image. It wasn't special but it looked good. I agree a set with different levels of involvement would be nice :) but it's hard to gauge how many a person has done... Rather than have them for numbers maybe we could do a sort of seniority scale: occasional contributor, regular contributor, hardcore contributor and ultimate contributor. Whatever (just made them up now in like 30 seconds).

As to the processes etc. yeh I / people need to work on that. Been on a 6 month wikibreak for various reasons and only JUST arrived back :) --Errant Tmorton166(Talk) 11:19, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ohana!
Sure, I could probably do two at once. As long as no one else asks, I think I can handle it. I prefer not to have talk page clutter, so if you could make a user subpage, such as User:OhanaUnited/Admin coaching, we can get started. :) Oh, and for the record, there is no "M" in my silly username. ;) Best wishes, Firsfron of Ronchester 06:40, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Hee! Start it by editing it, and save the page. I can see you'll need a lot of work. That's a good thing. :) Firsfron of Ronchester 06:55, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Re: WP:BAP

If you think an award nomination has reached the end of a discussion, and there is a clear show of support or objection, you can be bold and pass it and reject it yourself. There's no special requirement for anyone to pass or reject a Barnstar, really. Although remember that, like other things, your decision could be contested at a later date if someone doesn't agree with it. Also, if there is no consensus reached after a period of time, and no-one is contributing to the discussion anymore, then you should archive it under no consensus. Here, I'll write a little guide as to what you should do when each happens:

PASS:

  1. Move the discussion into the current archive at WP:BAP.
  2. Update the Barnstars/Wikiproject Awards page with the new award.
  3. Alert the nominator (on talk page, WikiProject talk page if a Wikiproject award) and tell them that they need to create a template and tag any images with the correct things (as seen on guidelines at WP:BAP).

FAIL:

  1. Move the discussion into the current archive at WP:BAP.
  2. Alert the nominator (on talk page, WikiProject talk page if a Wikiproject award) and tell them that they need to create a template and tag any images with the correct things (as seen on guidelines at WP:BAP).

As for the Religion and Spirituality barnstar that you mentioned, you'll see that people just started commenting on the discussion again, so its not finished yet.

The reason its been getting a bit overgrown as of late is because I seem to be the only person really maintaining that page. Now that its been nominated for deletion, I have to admit I feel a bit disheartened at the whole affair and I haven't really been paying much attention to it. :( Smomo 13:00, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Prepare your barnstar!

I'm working on assessing all of the articles in WikiProject Environment. I will be leaving my reasons/comments and rating in the edit summary. All as said on the Award Center page. I've done about that many articles in the Biography WikiProject so I am fairly knowledgeable about rating articles. Thanks for the assignment! --Psychless Type words! 23:14, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

RE: Don't rush yourself

If you mean by that I'm going to fast I suppose I could work on some of my other projects. If I'm assessing any article wrong please tell me because otherwise the assessment is worthless. Oh yes, I've been using Outriggr's script for quite a while before I started this, but thanks anyways. I also must have missed the line about tagging new articles so I suppose I'll need to be starting on that as well. Please leave a message on my talk page regarding this when you get the chance. --Psychless Type words! 15:52, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Re: Suggestion

I know, I've already assessed all the categories, templates, lists, and disambig pages that were in the unassessed category. They are in their respective categories. I'm not sure about tagging new articles for the project. I've done a few but the scope of the project seems ambiguous to me so I'm uneasy about tagging articles. I'm working on completing the list of missing articles on American representatives right now but I'll be getting back to this. --Psychless Type words! 18:57, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Good list, Good picture?

How come there's good article but not good list or picture? But all of them have featured section. OhanaUnited 18:19, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

You know, I've no idea why. You could ask on the appropriate Featured topic talk pages, though, and maybe someone there would know. Hope this helps! :) Firsfron of Ronchester 19:26, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm afraid neither of the WikiProjects I'm involved with actively use the A or B assessment types. Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs uses the FA and GA article assessment system. There are too few active editors to spend time assessing articles; we just write them. Wikipedia:WikiProject Television Stations doesn't use any sort of article assessment system: only one article, DuMont Television Network, has ever been promoted to GA, there are no FAs, and there currently is no effort to improve content, such as adding references, etc. Since none of the projects I'm involved with use them, I'm afraid I can't tell you very much about A and B grading on article assessments. Firsfron of Ronchester 22:16, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia_talk:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Work_via_Wikiprojects, perhaps? Firsfron of Ronchester 03:24, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
