Clete Roberts[edit]

Hi! I see you've recently created a stub article for Clete Roberts -- and even included the VietnamCorr template. I added his name to the template a few months back, in hopes of eventually getting around to starting an article. So it's great that you got it started! I'd love to know how it is that you came to do a piece on Clete Roberts, at all. I presume you must have seen him on KNXT, way back when... or perhaps on MASH?? Regards, Cgingold 14:10, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks. I knew Roberts from M*A*S*H, and was always curious about him. So I did some research and created his entry. Best, Stoshmaster (talk) 20:40, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent edits! My highest compliments on how you contextualized the additions and how clearly, simply and straightforwardly you wrote! --Tenebrae (talk) 11:32, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Appreciate that Stoshmaster (talk) 04:04, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya! Nice new article there, but I did want to point out that the original name of the band was "Full Tillt Boogie", with two L's, this, a play on the spelling of John Till's name. After Janis was convinced that ditching the "squares" from Kozmic Blues Band was the way to go, the hiring the remainder of John's band would provide her with the powerhouse boogie outfit she needed to back her. All those Canadian boys had gone down to N.Y.C. years earlier from their Stratford-Woodstock, Ontario, home towns. Regards, Hamster Sandwich (talk) 15:35, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I appreciate the corrections. I'll definitely note all that, unless you want to go ahead and do it? Stoshmaster (talk) 20:48, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Crusty Bunkers[edit]

  • Cheers for this article, really interesting topic i had no knowledge of. Cheers, tomasz. 13:20, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, it was fun researching it, because I didn't know about them before either! Stoshmaster (talk) 14:02, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comics fandom[edit]

Just noticed that in addition to your copious work on letters columns that you've also done a considerable amount of work on Jerry Bails - which I was in the process of doing also! So, to make sure we don't step on each others' toes, should I ask whether you know what you'll be tackling next..?! I think I've still got a considerable amount more to add into the article on Mr Bails in a short while, but I'm writing it off-line to avoid multiple edits. Similarly, I'm putting together an article on Comics fandom itself and Comics fanzines. If you'd like to attempt a collaberation on any of these - or other - pages (maybe you have access to sources I don't, or vice versa), let me know. :o) ntnon (talk) 02:59, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey ntnon. No, I've exhausted my knowledge/research about Jerry Bails, and welcome your additions to his entry. Ditto for comics fandom/fanzines. I look forward to reading more with what you do with those topics. Cheers! Stoshmaster (talk) 03:05, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I've significantly added to (and hopefully "improved") 'Jerry Bails' now, so sooner or later I'll get round to filling in a lot of the now-extant red links there. GB Love I've pretty-much covered, and need to tidy; RBCC deserves something worthwhile, and 'fandom and 'fanzines are in the process also. Among other things... ntnon (talk) 00:16, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bravo! What an amazing entry you've created! I'm really, really impressed — and humbled that you used so much of pitiable material I collected trolling around the Internet. I read the entire thing, and learned a lot about Dr. Bails. I made a couple of little typo corrections, but otherwise stand in awe of this wonderful tribute to the "father of comic fandom."
P.S. I also used some of the information you included here to augment the pre-existing Alter Ego (fanzine) and Alley Award entries. Great work! Stoshmaster (talk) 02:10, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I only popped back here to say that I appreciated you correcting my spellings..! Thanks. It hadn't even occurred to me to check for online interviews, so I've spent an enjoyable few minutes reading the one you turned up with Mr Kleefeld - fascinating. And also shades in more aspects of the man rather than his "hobby." I think there's definitely more to be added from that, actually, about his other intellectual endeavorus/progressive views on technology, etc. I'll get back to that eventually (unless you beat me to it!)
I did think that Alter Ego and Alley Award needed cross-updating, so thanks for doing that. :o) ntnon (talk) 03:08, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ron Wilson[edit]

Nice work.  :) Got anything for Mike Vosburg or David Anthony Kraft? BOZ (talk) 16:52, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! How's this for Vosburg? I'll get to Kraft when I have some more free time. Stoshmaster (talk) 18:43, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good deal! Just keep WP:BLP in mind, and you'll be just fine. You might want to coordinate with Tenebrae at some point, as I see you've been working on comics creators, and he has done a fair amount of work with them as well. If I can think of any other stubs that need work, I'll let you know.  :) BOZ (talk) 19:25, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
David Anthony Kraft's Comics Interview is a vitally important publication for a whole number of creator interviews, so that needs considerable mention on his page. ntnon (talk) 21:00, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Finally added some more material to the DAK entry. Seems to me that to really do Comics Interview justice, it needs its own entry. (Possibly same thing for his imprint Fictioneer Books...) Stoshmaster (talk) 18:51, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mucho awesome, thanks! :) BOZ (talk) 11:46, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I threatened to find some more stubs that you could work on.  ;) If you like, you could try Art Thibert, Bob Budiansky, Bob McLeod (comics), Brian Augustyn... those are just a few names I recognize off the first 200 of the Stub-Class Comics creators articles category.  :) BOZ (talk) 22:59, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I expanded Thibert's entry, Budiansky and McLeod seem pretty good to me; I doubt there's much I could add. (Maybe they no longer really qualify as stubs?) I'll try to tackle Augustyn next — Stoshmaster (talk) 06:13, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Augustyn done — Stoshmaster (talk) 17:30, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Novelty/Curtis[edit]

If you have any info on:

  • The relationship between Novelty and Curtis Publishing company
  • who at Curtis decided they should get into comics
  • why it was based in NYC instead of Philly with the rest of Curtis
  • profitability of Novelty press

I would love to see it added to the Novelty Press article, especially if you can include a reference. ike9898 (talk) 02:03, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kudos[edit]

Some nice discoveries added to Dick Briefer. My compliments! -- Tenebrae (talk) 02:46, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! When I wrote the original Novelty Press article, you hadn't yet written the Briefer bio, so thanks to you there was that context — Stoshmaster (talk) 03:47, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Akin & Garvey[edit]

Thanks for the note (and starting the articles!!). On your points:

Section headers like "Partial/selected bibliography" are almost always a bad idea as it raises the question then arises: "How did you make that selection?" And criteria for inclusion/exclusion can get distinctly tricky. On most creators (but especially the major ones, like Alan Moore, for example) the answer tends to be that you have to be as comprehensive as possible, which usually leads to the bibliography being split off and this is a reasonable course of action (although I wouldn't fancy trying to do that for someone like Stan Lee, but it is doable). You are right that a case can be made for folks like Akin & Garvey that fill-in issues, minor one-offs probably aren't worth noting (and indeed that is what databases are for - it is worth throwing in {{gcdb}} as none of them can ever be 100% comprehensive but with a couple you can probably get better coverage than we could hope to provide for relatively minor creators) but it is still better to keep the section header as simple as possible and free from ambiguous terms like "partial" or "selected" and, if you want to flag this, then it is better to do so in text at the start of the section: "Major comic work (excluding fill-ins and one-offs) include:" - after all nearly every bibliography is going to be incomplete to some degree and unless it is seriously lacking in their important works and needs more, it isn't worth flagging (and then you'd use {{expand}} or {{expand list}}). Hope that helps explain my thinking there.

Good point on the nationality - that makes sense and it'd be best to remove the information until something arises to confirm it. (Emperor (talk) 19:36, 11 September 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Good point about the issue of bibliography heds. Thanks — Stoshmaster (talk) 20:14, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, someone might want to revise back Ian Akin, then - I saw the query over 'partial' and made it 'select' because, the above notwithstanding, I think "complete" when I see 'Bibliography,' so it seemed safer to err on the side of "select." My underlying logic would be something like "select does not imply selected per se, but simply is a notation that it's an incomplete listing..." But it doesn't make much difference. The GCD is very helpful (and the CBDb isn't bad), but both have omissions, while Who's Who tends to give years only, and can also have gaps or errors. But between them they're fairly comprehensive, meaning that the lists here both don't need to be (..boo...), and can be made to be (better).
On the subject of nationality, I'm also not positive they are separately American, however: they do not appear to have the hallmarks of British artists (no obvious 2000AD or related credits), nor obviously unAmerican surnames; their major work was for Marvel; their first (known/listed/findable) work was for Larry Fuller (who is probably not Larry Fuller, as I had assumed blind...), who similarly appears to be American (underground comix; cover price $1.50, etc.); Disney work - according to Bails/Ware - was for Disney Comics (and Gladstone) rather than specified as being for Egmont or another foreign licensee.
So it might be safer for the time being not to guess at all, but at "best guess": Americans. Pretty definitely. :o) ntnon (talk) 17:02, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Legion Barnstar[edit]

A Barnstar!
The Legion Barnstar

I hereby award this Barnstar to Stoshmaster for their conspicuous effort editing and improving articles related to The Legion of Super-Heroes, specifically its main article, Tom and Mary Bierbaum, Mary Bierbaum, Tom Bierbaum & Keith Giffen. Nutiketaiel (talk) 20:34, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to recognize you for all the hard work you've been putting into the page on the Legion and its creators. Thanks.  :-) Nutiketaiel (talk) 20:34, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! I'm thrilled and honored. Thanks so much! Can I post it on my User page? — Stoshmaster (talk) 20:40, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, feel free.  :-) Nutiketaiel (talk) 20:45, 16 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jay and Silent Bob[edit]

Just to let you know I redirected Jay & Silent Bob (comics) [1] to Chasing Dogma. It is unusual to have the article named after the trade but (and I'd need to look around to confirm this) I believe there is some kind of structure/order in the Viewaskewniverse into which Chasing Dogma fits. If not then we can look into moving it. (Emperor (talk) 03:16, 30 September 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Cool. Works for me. — Stoshmaster (talk) 03:47, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of List of comic book letter column titles[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of comic book letter column titles, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Kudos[edit]

Just wanted to say nice job on the John Warner article you created. Very well-referenced and cited! -- Tenebrae (talk) 04:43, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, sir! As usual with me, it was one of those situations where his name kept coming up, and the only way I could learn about him was by compiling the information myself. -- Stoshmaster (talk) 05:02, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Conan the Barbarian comic[edit]

"(comic)" is specifically not allowed as a disambiguation phrase. Conan (comics) is the main article for all Conan comics and if you feel there is potential for confusion then I'd suggest using a hatnote like {{otheruses4|the 1970s Marvel Comics title|the main article on Conan comics|Conan (comics)}} or {{otheruses4|the 1970s Marvel Comics title|the main article on Marvel's Conan comics|Conan (Marvel Comics)}}.

That said I did wonder if we need quite so many articles on Marvel's Conan comics as we have the main one Conan (Marvel Comics) as well as two more sub-ones Savage Sword of Conan and now Conan the Barbarian (comics) (as well as the main one Conan (comics) and Dark Horses article which contain the trades). I suppose as each of those ran to 200+ issues then there could be a case for having them both but neither is a particularly solid article (and I don't think it is wise to have a section/issue in Savage Sword - an issue by issue breakdown like that is never a wise idea).

So perhaps improve those articles and keep the main Marvel one focused on the character for now but I am open to the idea of a merge - we should really try and improve the core articles and then if the sections on the comics get too big then split them off but now they are separate we'll have to see. (Emperor (talk) 21:33, 17 November 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Use your best judgement. It is often the best way to stop the main body of the article from getting to "listy" (He did A, B, C, D, etc., etc.) and I have done them for people who are inkers but they have also usually been pencillers (e.g. Michael Bair and I usually focus on British creators, who are usually a mix). It does mean people can be more selective on what they focus on in the prose. However, as I say, use your best judgement. If you think it won't be a problem and/or the solution will be more of an issue than the "problem" then remove it. Your call. (Emperor (talk) 22:21, 17 December 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Hey, Stosh[edit]

Happy New Year! Hope it's off to a good start. -- Tenebrae (talk) 01:18, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Tenebrae! And the same to you and yours. — stoshmaster (talk) 02:20, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm giving serious consideration to working this article up to GA status, and believe the article should focus on the heyday of the genre with only a brief mention of the resurgence. I want to change the title of the article to "Horror comics in the United States, 1947-1954" for the purpose of eliminating a worldwide view of the subject (which I'm not prepared to do), and ending the article with the Senate hearings (which is the dramatic highpoint of the genre's history). ItsLassieTime (talk) 06:14, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Frank Quitely[edit]

Hi. Thanks for adding some information with your edit to the Frank Quitely article. However, much of the material you added is unsourced, which violates the Verifiability policy, and so I removed most of that. However, because I'm familiar with the Eisner Awards website, I went there and got citations for Quitely's Eisners, so that I wouldn't have to delete that, much as I did with the Jeff Smith and Bone articles. I also added some info on his nominations. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 19:01, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Instead of simply deleting material, wouldn't it be better to just add a {{cn}} tag, to alert editors that sources/verification need to be added? Regarding birthdates, I always try my best to source the information, but there are many, many, many biographical articles on Wikipedia which list people's DOBs and do not source them.
In any case, I found the respective sources for Quitely's article and added them back. Thanks. -- stoshmaster (talk) 19:14, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comics creators[edit]

Hey, Stosh!

You might be interested in working on some of these articles: Terrie Smith, Bill Vallely, David Füleki, Edward Berridge, Tom Kerr, Ananth Panagariya, Jim Caron, Lela Dowling, Mohammad Haque, Snaggy, Igor Goldkind, Bill Schanes, Jules Faber, Mort Lawrence, Jennifer Diane Reitz, Kim Jae-hwan, Martin Wagner (artist), Sal Regla, Tom Spurgeon, Michael Carroll (author), Tom Williams (artist), David Willis (cartoonist), Klebs junior, Dan Norton, Ed Clayton, Logan (illustrator), Lore Sjöberg, and Kevin Cannon.

They all currently have one of the {{notability}} tags on them, so they need decent sourcing, and many are stubs so therefore could use expansion. There are over 200 comics articles with a notability tag in all, but I know that some of your best work has been with creators; I really dug your recent work on Ms. Marvel by the way. :) BOZ (talk) 01:35, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, BOZ! I can't say I'm familiar with any of the folks above — except for Tom Spurgeon, so maybe he's the one I should start with! -- stoshmaster (talk) 03:40, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I figured they were pretty obscure, but I tossed it out there anyway. :) I'll bring it up on the comics project talk page and see if anyone can help (or if there's anything worth helping!) BOZ (talk) 17:34, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ms. Marvel[edit]

Hey, Stoshmaster. I saw that you recently contributed heavily to the Ms. Marvel article, and I must say it is brilliant - it definately boosts up the article's quality. I'm currently working on turning it into a good article, but before that happens, would it be possible if you could give me your opinion on something that came up here? If it isn't too much of a bother. -- A talk/contribs 13:47, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Imperial Guard inspiration[edit]

I was looking at the Mentor and Imperial Guard articles with an eye to sourcing the inspiration and I see you've added the Appendix as a source. However, I did look at it and don't think it is actually much use as a definitive source — in general while the Appendix is good for the appearances of the obscure characters the comments section is generally just the thoughts of people who have written in and (unless they are basing their comments on original source or, like Jean-Marc Lofficier and John Freeman, the creator drops them a note) can't be considered a reliable source.

I have been trying to source this and drawing a blank (despite it being pretty obvious in Mentor's case!!) so was devising a plan: kick this over to Comic Book Legends Revealed. They have access to better sources and industry contacts, so could help nail this one down (they picked up on an unsourced statement on an article here and managed to sort that out). I have a couple more things I need help with (what I've found about Wikipedia is it often helps underline the gaps in our knowledge and what we can easily prove), so this approach might work and if it does there could be other things they can help with. Thoughts? Anything else we might need help with? (Emperor (talk) 18:27, 22 April 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Sending the question over to Comic Book Urban Legends Revealed is a great idea! I can't think of anything else off-hand for them to tackle, but I think the Legion-Imperial Guard issue is such a rich one that Brian Cronin could devote a whole piece to it. (By the way, the topic was broached (by a commenter named Jack Fear) in this article, and not refuted by Cronin, but I don't suppose that's exactly a valid citation...) -- stoshmaster (talk) 21:24, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff - that looks to be the kind of springboard we need. One comment [2] might suggest the X-Men Companion could be somewhere worth looking. Mainly it is so obvious it is just stated as fact [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], etc. So I'll see about the book and then if that doesn't give us what we'll need I'll fire it over to them and see what they can do. If you come across anything else note it down for the future (I am thinking of asking about the retconning of various characters as parts of The Eternals - was this ever planned?). (Emperor (talk) 23:03, 22 April 2009 (UTC))[reply]
I'm not an Eternals person, so I wouldn't know about that. If you have the X-Men Companion, definitely look it up, because I am obviously wary of "Internet telephone," where rumors get repeated as fact. (Though in this case, I am 100% sure that it is the case that the Imperial Guard members were analogues of the Legion members!) One example of being careful of accepted "fact" was some articles I worked on last week having to do with Northstar and Jim Shooter's purported statement that there "are no gay superheroes in the Marvel universe." I did some research and found that he never said exactly that; rather, his position was more nuanced (if ultimately, just as homophobic). In any case, I wrote it up in Northstar's entry, which I'm rather proud of... -- stoshmaster (talk) 23:12, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tenebrae[edit]

Hey there, have you had much of an opportunity to interact with User:Tenebrae? I know he is also very interested in working on articles of comics creators, so I figured you two might want to compare notes at some point now that he is back. :) BOZ (talk) 01:09, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, User:Tenebrae and I have been in touch over the years, and have enjoyed working together. He is a very good editor. Thanks for thinking of me. -- stoshmaster (talk) 03:06, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, no problem - it's good to see him back; he's been gone since January! BOZ (talk) 12:09, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, my ears should have been burning! It's nice to be well thought-of ... thank you both.
I was actually just about to compliment Stoshmaster on your dedicated efforts at infoboxing the scores of comics professionals and keeping the format updated. I also wanted to ask about Lloyd Jacquet, who as you note (and I'd missed!) had immigrated to the U.S. Do we know that he became naturalized, or did he perhaps remain a resident alien (like my 70-something mother-in-law, who came here in the 1950s ... and believe it or not, was a DC receptionist and secretary in the late 1950s and knew Bob Kanigher, Julie Schwartz and the like!) --Tenebrae (talk) 21:26, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good question. Since he was previously noted as being American, and I spotted the detail about him being an immigrant, I trusted that prior attribution. I'm curious as to the alternate spelling of "Jacquet" as "Jaquet", and also where he immigrated from (France? Belgium?). And was he an officer in the U.S. army during WW I, or was it the country he came from?
And thanks for the kind words, Tenebrae, I'm doing my best. ;-> -- stoshmaster (talk) 21:33, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Having worked on it, I might or might not have put the "American" in the intro to designate that this was where he was based, so any confusion is probably on my part. The Internet can be frustrating on things like old publishing trade magazines, for instance, that might have written about some of these figures, but which we can only find by physically going to libraries. I'll keep nosing around.
BTW, killer job at Sam Rosen, man! Nice, nice work there and at Howard Purcell, too! -- Tenebrae (talk) 22:16, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tenebrae. It's sad, like in Joe Rosen's case, that often we don't get the full details about a person's career until they die. You've been doing amazing work in this arena; I feel like every article I come across -- where I might add a small detail here and there -- has already been extensively researched and written by you! — stoshmaster (talk) 15:01, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the minor edit — nice to see someone's reading the stuff!! I'm new to this, so much appreciated — still learning the styles. I put the original header in to differentiate the various Aces — I now realise a 'not to be confused with' at the top is the correct way, so I'll correct that over the weekend (plus a small word switch typo I've only just seen after about a hundred reads).

I'm currently working (and late) on Future Comics, King Comics, Magic Comics, and Feature Books in the same manner, to complete the David McKay Publications titles — they'll be up in a couple of weeks. I'd appreciate any comments on my suggestions for page title changes to Future Comics and King Comics because of name conflicts to make sure I'm thinking the right way around on this, if you have time. -- Cheers! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Archiveangel (talkcontribs) 23:16, 30 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, sorry it took me a while to get back to you. You've been doing some solid work on these old publishers, and I encourage you to keep it up. (I took the liberty of putting in the "Distinguish" template for you on those pages.) Hmmm, my suggestions for the Future Comics and King Comics titles would be Future Comics (David McKay) and King Comics (David McKay). What do you think? -- stoshmaster (talk) 19:49, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
and apologies back for delays - I got a bit distracted with a Lonnie Liston Smith page that was far too empty for someone so good (was listening to him while updating pages and thought I'd check what was written - fatal!). Then I accidentally got interested in Avon Books and comics and spent a few weeks down a very interesting alleyway that I need to work on loads more. Then I found my collection of old comics fanzines in some big boxes in the garage .....
Sounds sensible on the page titles - I'll go with that. Hopefully I'll get those ones up in the next week or so (before I get distracted again).
I have every intention of continuing, ta - it's surprising how difficult it is getting any sensible info in a short space of time on old small press comics (I'm not so good on post 1990 stuff - the overdrawn McFarlane world that was <ahem> Spawned around then lost me and I'd much rather go misty eyed over Jim Aparo or Jim Mooney). I'm sure most people won't want to fight through obscure net pages and Jerry Bails and GCD etc to get what they want, and will miss on lots of good stuff as a result. Because I've been collecting since I was 8 and still have most of it, it would be a shame not to use the reference material I've got.
... and <blush> thanks for the "Distinguish" - made my day!!! Cheers!

Want to help me work on this one? :) It's likely to pass GA after I work on the lead, and if there's anything you can add to the article in general that would be helpful. BOZ (talk) 02:44, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here is something that might pique your interest. :) BOZ (talk) 13:34, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, BOZ, that's already an impressive article. (As usual, it looks like Tenebrae did some quality work.) I don't know what more I could add to it, other than maybe some little tidbits here and there. Right now I've been concentrating on populating the 1980s in comics pages, and documenting the foundation and defunct dates for various comics publishers. Thanks for the tip about the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Comics#Comics creators articles by quality page. Very helpful! -- stoshmaster (talk) 19:37, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lank Leonard[edit]

(a) Over decades, I've always seen the word "comics" used interchangeably for both comic books and comic strips. (b) Lank Leonard's art appeared extensively in comic books, and some of those reprints had covers drawn by him as new art specifically for the comic books. It seems to me that the two categories "Comic strip cartoonists" and "Comic book artists" were created for this reason, to differentiate the two types of craftspeople. The two fields really are quite different, as are the skills required for both, and simply drawing new covers for collections of reprinted strips doesn't in my mind turn a strip cartoonist into a comic book artist. -- stoshmaster (talk) 22:27, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kraft[edit]

I made the decision to remove the information based on this [10], and because the material was not critical to the biography, nor does it affect the NPOV of the article. It was a judgement call. If the content needs to be removed from the history then oversight is needed. An admin can do that.(olive (talk) 04:02, 19 November 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Thanks for your speedy response. So, just to clarify, did DAK ask you to remove the birthdate information? Because Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons states "if the subject complains about the publication of his or her date of birth, err on the side of caution and simply list the year of birth." Again, since you seem to be a long-serving editor, I'm just curious about your approach to bios of living people. -- stoshmaster (talk) 04:09, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm very cautious about BLPs. The article is still neutral with out the date of birth, and that kind of personal information can cause real problems in real life. Had the information been critical to the article it would have been a different situation in my mind, and would have needed more input. Also Kraft had already been told to check with WP:OTRS so he had that to back him up if there were more concerns than an editor could fix. I also consider the birthdate a kind of implied addendum to the BLP policy. I have some experience, but there are many with more, so Its always good to ask and keep learning until you feel satisfied.:o)(olive (talk) 04:24, 19 November 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Comic Art Convention[edit]

I get the feeling from your edit that you're a real, actual, been-there veteran of the great Seuling cons yourself. It's nice to work with someone from "the old days." You know, I just read that when Albert Einstein first visited the U.S., he stayed at the Commodore Hotel — future site of the Comic Art Con! -- Tenebrae (talk) 03:21, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello Stoshmaster! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 943 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

Your Advice is requested on Original Artwork for Tarantula (DC Comics), 1941[edit]

Dear Stoshmaster, I am relatively new to Wiki. You seem to be a knowledgeable Wiki editor, article writer and expert, in the field of Golden Age Comics... is that right? Please see my note on the discussion page about the origins of DC's 1941 Tarantula character Tarantula (DC Comics). I possess original black and white (ink) artwork signed by "Leland Harris" (aka "Leland Harris", "Harris Levey". It is dated April 24, 1941 DC Comics, and has a copyright symbol at the bottom of the ink page. I am wondering if scan this original artwork image, am I allowed to upload this image according to Wikipedia's certification parameters). If not, whom I should contact that is a respected authority on the subject, in order to properly verify this artwork and make its image and written content known to other comic enthusiasts --those that are interested in the Golden Age of Comics. Please advise. 20:16, 22 August 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonathanlevey (talkcontribs)

Hey Jonathan, I would think there'd be no problem in you scanning and uploading the original page, and even posting thumbnail of it on the Tarantula page. (You could explain its relevance - that it's the first recorded depiction of the character — in the caption.) When you upload it, just make sure to select the option "A cover or other page from a book, DVD, newspaper, magazine, or other such source", and under licensing use the option "comic book stuff." And then do your best to fill out the other descriptive fields. Hope this helps. -- stoshmaster (talk) 16:10, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since you are obviously very knowledgeable, Stoshmaster, in the area of Golden Age Comics, I would welcome your thoughtful and constructive input and editing skills in regard to the article on Harris Levey, DC comic artist for the original Air Wave. I am really a novice with Wiki and since I am close to the subject, I worked very hard with the guidance of skilled Wiki Editors, to avoid COI and keep the article objective. Still I know it could use lots of improvement and much more in the way of posting verifiable sources and citations. Many thanks for your consideration. Jonathan Levey (talk) 22:30, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Levey article seems very good to me. As you say, it just needs more outside references to back up certain factual observations. I assume you're a relative? Unfortunately, as I'm sure you know, Wikipedia frowns on "original research", even by family members, unless they can back it up with verifiable sources and citations. I will make an effort when I can to find more sources for Mr. Levey. In the meantime, a couple of good sources you may want to explore include The Reading Room Index: an Index to the Holdings of the Michigan State University Libraries Comic Art Collection and Who's Who of American Comic Books, 1928–1999, both of which are considered trustworthy sources. Hope that's helpful. -- stoshmaster (talk) 16:10, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are right Stoshmaster, I am a relative of the late Harris Levey. He was my father. I am very aware (now, but was not when I first started to write the article) that Wiki frowns on relatives posting articles (COI concerns)--and understandably so. At this point, I have pretty much left it to other outside (objective) wiki editors (hopefully those, like yourslef, with strong knowledge and/or interest in the Golden age of comics) to work at making this article even stronger and better Wikified (with proper verifications, etc). Therefore, in the days and weeks to come, any further assistance you can be in this regard, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks too for your very helpful links to reliable outside sources. This is much appreciated.  :) Jonathan Levey (talk) 17:17, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Repost of Shamrock Squid[edit]

A tag has been placed on Shamrock Squid requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia, because it appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion process. If you can indicate how it is different from the previously posted material, place the template {{hang on}} underneath the other template on the article and put a note on the page's discussion page saying why this article should stay. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Orphaned non-free image File:Shamrock-squid.jpg[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Shamrock-squid.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 03:29, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of comics that were never published[edit]

Hi Stoshmaster,

I've been making some additions to the List of comics that were never published article and noticed that you had made some edits to it in the past. I was wondering if you could take a look at it and provide some feedback? Thanks!

Mtminchi08 (talk) 06:44, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, there, nice job of expanding that article. Overall, I would try to avoid over-using Grand Comics Database as a reference (since it is also an amateur user-driven resource), but many of your other citations are very good. Kudos. -- stoshmaster (talk) 16:30, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice. I intend to add additional citations once I can get some of my magazines (Alter Ego, Comic Book Artist, etc.) out of storage. At the very least, the GCD is there to verify publication dates. Sorta drives me crazy when I see an article that gives a vague "mid 1970s" date for something when it's possible to find a specific date such as "July 1976". Barry Blair[edit]

Are you sure that "gay artist" is an appropriate category for Barry Blair? WP policy indicates that categories such that should only be used when there is "a verified general consensus of reliable published sources that the description is appropriate", and I haven't seen that about Blair. While I have little doubt that his sexuality didn't conform to mainstream heterosexuality, I'm not sure we can label it objectively. -Jason A. Quest (talk) 16:25, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your call. I based it on multiple reports that he and Colin Walbridge (aka Colin Chain) were lovers/partners (not to mention all the unsourced innuendo about him and the young Dave Cooper, which for obvious reasons I did not include in the article). But if you object, go ahead and remove that cat tag. -- stoshmaster (talk) 16:31, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spiderman Comics Weekly[edit]

I must say that I'm rather impressed by the new page you've set up on Spiderman Comics Weekly. The justification for the Spider-Man and Captain Britain story appearing in the US first is well put, I know fans have argued over that one for years (personally I suspect it was designed to be used both in MTU and SSM&CB). No doubt I'll be contributing to this fine page myself at some point - thanks for creating it.82.110.160.178 (talk) 15:58, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nice![edit]

Been wanting to compliment you on your Charlton-articles work; it gets lonely sometimes with some of these non-Marvel/DC Silver Age comics! That radio-show cite at Willy Schultz was a great fine. Kudos, Stosh! --Tenebrae (talk) 22:24, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, sir! I was really psyched when I came across it, because it gave the Willy Schultz stuff such context. P.S. I moved the Devil's Brigade material (formerly on the Willy Schultz page) to the Will Franz article, which I just posted today. -- stoshmaster (talk) 22:28, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I feel like the head of your fan club! Nice (and lord knows time-consuming, manual) work on pointing links from Western fiction to Western comics — I had no idea that article existed, though I well should have. Kudos, Mr. S! --Tenebrae (talk) 13:16, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You're probably getting sick of me complimenting you, but your new article Farrell Publications is just exquisite. You have got tone, language, referencing, context, all of that down pat. It is a ever a delight to see the work of an editor who understands how to write for an encyclopedia. Again, my kudos. And my God, what an amount of work you did sorting and sifting through all those imprints! --Tenebrae (talk) 13:54, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And Myron Fass! You're amazing! What next? Israel Waldman? :)   --Tenebrae (talk) 14:04, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, sir! The Ajax-Farrell thing had been driving me crazy for a while, and while investigating it I came across Fass. He was too fascinating to leave out of the mix. But I've been definitely neglecting my "real world" responsibilities for the last couple of weeks and need to tone down the wiki-editing quite a bit.
BTW, I'm still not convinced I've unpacked all the various imprints and brands associated with Farrell. It's a tangled web. -- stoshmaster (talk) 16:33, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New articles[edit]

Hello Stoshmaster,

As a followup to your message on 7 November 2011, I thought that you might want to take a look at two new articles which I recently created: Janice Race and Greg Potter.
Mtminchi08 (talk) 02:13, 25 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mtminchi08, Nice job with the two new articles, especially with the sourcing and citations. However, I'm not sure you've established notability with Janice Race. I don't see much in her bio that does that. I'm sure she was a very capable editor, but given her short tenure in the field and the fact that she doesn't appear to have made much of an impact, I'm not sure that she merits a Wikipedia entry. I'm not suggesting that you delete the entry, but I'm just preparing you for the fact that some others might do so. -- stoshmaster (talk) 15:50, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And Stosh, I just want to give my every now-and-then kudos and encouragement for all the meticulous work you're doing on Atlas comics and characters. Excelsior! (Oh, wait ... did somebody else already say that?)  : )   --Tenebrae (talk) 00:32, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

ACG[edit]

Just wanted to share this with a fellow Golden/Silver-Age editor (probably in more ways than one!). I've just spend ninety bucks — the cheapest I could find it! — on Michael Vance's book Forbidden Adventures, about the history of American Comics Group. Hopefully in the next couple of days I can start to clean up that article. And just as hopefully, you can jump in and fix whatever I screw up!   :)   --03:09, 23 December 2011 (UTC)

That's awesome! Thanks for your "sacrifice"! I look forward to seeing your edits -- stoshmaster (talk) 15:35, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do, too — it's a bigger job than I thought! But the main reason I came by is to say: What a great find, that NY Times piece on Harry "A" Chesler! I have a subscription, so I'll look to see if there's an online version — it's catch as catch can with the paper, but I've pulled scans of articles from 1909. I tip my hat to you, sir! --Tenebrae (talk) 00:26, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And I've downloaded the PDF. Wow, what a great read. I guess we can't insert the PDF URL since it's a pay article, but I'll at least add the abstract URL to make it easier for people to find. Nice find — makes me want to go fishing in the Times by searching for every comics creator I can think of and seeing what comes up! Oh, good — more work! With regards, and I'll see you after the blackout, --Tenebrae (talk) 00:35, 18 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
glad to see you spotted the Chesler updates. I was excited to come across that Times piece too. Really fills in a lot of details on a guy that always seemed more legend than man. -- stoshmaster (talk) 07:43, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I coulda sworn I was given a few Nicknames. I dimly remember "Amiable Al," "Affable Al," and "Amicable Al..." but I just did a quick perusal over my earliest years at Marvel and I can't find any of those in the Credit Boxes. They musta all been in Letters Pages or some solicitation.
I think you need to put the Nickname Article up as an actual Wiki Page (excuse my Wiki-Ignorance if you did that and I just can't find it. I'm very slowly figuring out how to use and edit Wiki). I have a Gazillion Comic Pro Friends that would have a serious chuckle over it! In fact, I'll send the page out to my buds today.
Thanx again!

Replaceable fair use File:SalBuscema.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:SalBuscema.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that this media item is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media item could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media item is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the file discussion page, write the reason why this media item is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. VernoWhitney (talk) 21:06, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Christmas[edit]

Big Apple Con[edit]

Hi. I have removed the material you added to Big Apple Con, because sites with user-generated content are not considered reliable under WP:USERG. While Evan Dorkin is identified as the author of the initial post on that page, positive identification of those who posted replies is more problematic.

Also, it is not necessary to cite that source consecutively in the same paragraph. If that one source supports the entire paragraph, then one citation of it at the end of it will suffice. Nightscream (talk) 20:34, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Hullaballoo Wolfowitz. As a previous extensive contributor to the previous Curtis Magazines page, I was saddened to see it essentially deleted -- but of course I understand the reasoning. Check out my wholesale revision of the page, which I think properly restores much of the valid the information and is well-cited and referenced (though of course with plenty of room for expansion and improvement). I also think the name of the page should be changed: maybe to "Marvel Magazines"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Stoshmaster/Sandbox/Curtis_Magazines -- stoshmaster (talk) 14:48, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please continue your cleanup there!   : )   —Tenebrae (talk) 17:00, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No problemo! BTW, check out my new write-up for what was Curtis Magazines. Right now it's sitting in my sandbox, but I'd like to move it to what Curtis turned into, the very unwieldy "List of magazines released by Marvel Comics in the 1970s." I think my edits properly restore much of the valid the information and is well-cited and referenced (though of course with plenty of room for expansion and improvement). I also think the name of the page should be changed: maybe to "Marvel Magazines"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Stoshmaster/Sandbox/Curtis_Magazines I'd love your input. -- stoshmaster (talk) 17:19, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From my research I understood that you were a notable figure in the comics world, which is why I created the original entry. Unfortunately, there are not many recourses for you other than calling attention to the issue on the "Robert Beerbohm" talk page and complaining to Wikipedia administrators. It is against Wikipedia policy for subjects of entries to contribute to their own pages (although I think removing slanderous material is allowed). In addition, any new information or expansion needs to be verified with reputable secondary sources (newspaper/magazine articles, books, professional websites, etc.). I wish I could be more helpful. In my experience, these "edit wars" don't last very long, as the vandal generally runs out of energy and moves onto something else. Best of luck resolving the issue. -- stoshmaster (talk) 17:26, 19 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Stoshmaster, Some same one person I can not ID continues to repost over & over some slanderous lies about me on my page. How do I contact Wiki admin people? If you can help out that, would be appreciative.

Thanks for getting back with me and also thanks for creating this page on me in the first place. I did not know it was in wiki for quite some time. One day I did a google search of my name, this wiki page popped up amongst the 250,00+ other hits on my name. I thought, well, this is neat. -:) When I discovered this page I did not know one is not supposed to add data to one's own page. Is it OK to correct data? I guess it was you must have been deleting same. Tis OK, the initial rush of it all wore off.

I am still very much a part of the buying & selling comics world for 47 non-stop years now, strictly internet these days. eBay store BLBcomics with sales in to over 60+ countries now on all continents except Antarctica. The hip joints preclude my setting up at shows nationwide any more. I spent 22 years 1972-1994 living in comic book "caves" so that thrill is long gone as well.

Also the research continues unabated. Am in the credits of nine books alone this year 2013. Am well over 200 in credits and/or acknowledgements for having supplied data. Have a couple more appearing soon. I also have given several point point presentations now at university as well as comicons talking about the origins of the American comic book dating back to the 1840s. All presentations were well received so I am going to be expanding that aspect of my life passing on the lore I learned from a ghreta many friends, mostly dead now.

Anyway, thanks again for getting back with me. I read the Direct Market page - which is in drastic need of major revision expansion as there is a lot of wrong data and quite a bit needs expansion. If I supply you the data, you want to take a stab placing it in Wiki? I still do not know HTML and get lost in it. Just a thought, just asking.... You know, it's a good question about how to contact a Wikipedia administrator. I've never personally done it. But I bet a little quick searching will lead you to one. (Generally, each section of the site has certain administrators, or top-level editors, responsible for it. So your complaint would be within the Comics section...) As for the Direct Market page, unfortunately, the only way to correct/expand the section would be based on SECONDARY sources such as published articles like I specified before. PRIMARY sources are not allowed as verifiable sources. Not my rule, but I can see the logic of it... -- stoshmaster (talk) 21:50, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More kudos[edit]

You're probably tired of me saying so, but it is SO nice to know there's another editor out there who knows about people like Vincent Fago and who are keeping their articles cleaned-up and up-to-date. Thanks again for all your good work. --Tenebrae (talk) 01:04, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Tenebrae, don't know if you saw I greatly added to the Pendulum Press section of Fago's bio, discovering he worked for them on a 10-year contract and traveled to the Philippines in 1970 to recruit all the Filipino komiks artist who illustrated the Pendulum Classics. (I also created a Pendulum Press article in its own right.) Cool stuff. -- stoshmaster (talk) 17:55, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I did see all that! And it is very cool. Hey, check out all the wealth of stuff I found out about Ernie Hart — from a dog-owner's magazine, no less! --Tenebrae (talk) 18:20, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Saturday's Edit-a-thon[edit]

Hey stoshmaster, It was great to meet you at the Brooklyn Museum's Art and Feminism Edit-a-thon on Saturday. I'm writing a series of posts about the event on the museum's blog and would love to mention you and your work. I'm also wondering if you'd be at all interested in contributing a comic or illustration based on the edit-a-thon that we could include as the title image for the post? Would would absolutely love to feature it! Alexandrathom (talk) 04:42, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alexandrathom! It was a really inspiring event -- so great to see so many people! And I enjoyed working with Frima Hofrichter on improving the Judith Leyster article. Feel free to mention me and my work. However, at the moment I'm pretty swamped, so I don't think I could create anything new for your use. Wish I could... -- stoshmaster (talk) 21:57, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No worries about the illustration - I totally understand. Regardless, I'm so glad you found the event to be inspiring. I'll definitely mention you and your work on the blog and you give a shout to let you know when the post is live. Alexandrathom (talk) 14:26, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Drafts[edit]

Hey there! Thanks for working on some bio articles. Would you have any sources to improve any of these draft pages to help them get moved into article space? Most are RPG-related, but some do have experience in the comics industry as well. BOZ (talk) 18:08, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BOZ. Thanks for your kind words! I mostly work in the comics field. I didn't recognize any of the names. Are any of them cartoonists? -- stoshmaster (talk) 18:18, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Beth Sotelo is a colorist, David Morgan-Mar does webcomics, Jason Holmgren is a cartoonist, and Klaus Scherwinski and Steve Crompton are comics artists. BOZ (talk) 18:49, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I'll look into 'em -- stoshmaster (talk) 21:57, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, man! I found Crompton at the "Who's Who of American Comics 1928-1999" page, but haven't hard time to go through that yet. BOZ (talk) 23:51, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for the quick copyedit on Holmgren. :) BOZ (talk) 15:06, 29 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great job on the new article. I did not know she was an artist as well as a colorist.

My Friend Dahmer[edit]

I'm sorry to revert your edit again, Stoshmaster. In order to avoid edit warring, I think I should put my rationale here. I have read much of the 'book'. It is hardly a serious study of the crimes; more a comic-like, illustration-laden (often mocking) portrayal of Dahmer in his teen years by a high school acquaintance, who largely focuses upon his well-known outcast status and fascination with dissection. There is not much difference in the book than in his previous comics. Granted there are a few fascinating quotes here and there, but, to me, overall, this is little more than parody encased in hardback. I think, if you disagree with my reasoning, we should put this for overall consensus on the article talk page?--Kieronoldham (talk) 09:15, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I couldn't disagree with you more. Please don't conflate the form of comics with what you expect them to be (e.g., lightweight, fantastic, humorous)! Maybe you don't realize that the graphic novel format has long been accepted as a legitimate form of nonfiction storytelling, as the prizes awarded to such books as Maus, Persepolis, and Fun Home can attest.
In that same vein, My Friend Dahmer is a serious portrait of Dahmer's formative years, written by a schoolmate of his who went to his house many times and knew him very well. The book has received accolades from many "serious" journals, such as this from Publishers Weekly:

The tone is sympathetic and enraged (‘Where were the damn adults?’), while not excusing or making the story unduly fascinating. Backderf’s writing is impeccably honest in not exculpating his own misdeeds . . . and quietly horrifying. A small, dark classic.

and this from the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

Masterful. . . a rich tale full of complexity and sensitivity . . . There's something about Dahmer's life and crimes that seems almost crafted for treatment in the murky world of comix. Yet it's empathy and nuance, not gore, that put My Friend Dahmer alongside Alison Bechdel's Fun Home and David Small's Stitches in the annals of illustrated literature.

The book was nominated for Ignatz, Harvey, and Rueben Awards, received an Angoulême Award and was named by Time magazine as one of the top five non-fiction books of 2012. Also, the book is extensively annotated, using material from many sources, including Dahmer's father's book, the Akron Beacon Journal, video interviews, and so on; making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in this topic.
To me, anyone who reads the book carefully can see that it is a valuable contribution to the canon of Dahmer-related literature; and in any case should not be expunged from existence as you have been doing. I'd be happy to submit my argument forward on the talk page.
-- stoshmaster (talk) 18:34, 7 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We'll have to agree to disagree. Granted your intention was for the betterment of the article. I won't repeat my explanations, as you can see them on this page. As I say, I respect consensus and would wager that somewhere between 60 and 75% of users would agree with you as opposed to me. Regards.--Kieronoldham (talk) 09:42, 8 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you ever actually read the whole book, I'd be happy to revisit the discussion with you. In any case, thanks for your contributions to the Dahmer Wikipedia entry, which is quite extensive and authoritative. -- stoshmaster (talk) 15:40, 10 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Thanks for the kudos. I have read sections of the book, and there are intriguing quotes smattered throughout. Perhaps there is a slight bias on my part that Backderf should be taken seriously as an author given his previous, extensive, blatantly mocking illustrations of Dahmer.--Kieronoldham (talk) 09:08, 11 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Grandserows[edit]

Hey, I'm really sorry—I'm not trying to be a prick. I actually did take a look around for sources last time I removed it. I'm sure there's something out there somewhere, perhaps in a local paper or something, but until a proper WP:RS is found, let's keep it out. Curly Turkey ¡gobble! 22:05, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what the issue is here -- are you just looking for proof that the Grandserows actually exist? Then this article from an English-language newspaper in the Philippines should suffice. If you're looking for proof that the team name is derived from the Japanese serow, then why isn't the team's official website page sufficient? I doubt you'll find a citation anywhere else about something so self-evident. -- stoshmaster (talk) 22:55, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Then is it even worth mentioning? Everything else in the article is properly sourced. The fact that the Yamaha XT 225 is named after the Japanese serow is not sourced to Yamaha; the fact that Princess Mononoke has a serow in it is not sourced to Ghibli. Curly Turkey ¡gobble! 00:32, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To me, it seemed a perfect place to mention it, since the article specifically states that serows' agility brings comparisons to superior athletes. Well, the Grandserows are a Japanese baseball team based in a prefecture that traditionally is the home to serows. (Whether the Grandserows are superior athletes is another discussion, but they are a fixture of Nagano Prefecture, and have been in existence for nearly 10 years...) -- stoshmaster (talk) 15:35, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rock 'N' Roll Comics has been nominated for Did You Know[edit]

When I see someone[edit]

changing dates, as you did recently at The Ikettes, I appreciate a source or reference because I have often found vandals going in and doing date changes just for a laugh, or what ever it is that motivates such . . . .......... people. Looking at your user page suggests that you are a serious, long tern editor, so i am not so much worried about vandalism as I am curious as to where you got your information. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 23:10, 5 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In the last week as I've worked on The Ikettes page, I added an infobox, alphabetized the list of members, differentiated Minettes songs from Ikettes releases, and tried —where I could — to nail down the dates of various members of the group. Most importantly, I created a more descriptive and contextual introductory paragraph, corrected the origins of the group, and started the process of "de-plagiarizing" the main body of the article, which some earlier editor basically lifted verbatim from AllMusic.com. I was able to use one major verifiable source for some of the history, but the biggest problem is nailing down the dates of the various members, and the dates of the various song releases. The best I've been able to do is get them from miscellaneous Google searches that are not reputable sources: message boards, blogs, and the like. So I haven't cited them, as I know they're not verifiable. Nonetheless, I figure it's better to have some information rather than none. To sum up, the article as it stands is a mess, but I think it's a slightly cleaner mess than it was when I started. Thanks for noticing. -- stoshmaster (talk) 16:47, 6 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This is plenty good enough for me. I also on occasion rely on sources that are not exactly kosher when it is a subject that i know something about and feel that I am able to make an evaluation of the source for myself. I appreciate what you are doing, keep it up. Carptrash (talk) 19:11, 8 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Any comic book series that published the likes of Bill Griffith, Robert Crumb, Kim Deitch, Justin Green, Rory Hayes, Trina Robbins, and Spain Rodriguez is certainly notable! — especially when compared to some of the other more recent mainstream comic book titles (not to mention one-shots & limited series) that have extensive articles despite having relatively little cultural import. Hi, is there a reason you keep reverting the changes I'm making to the Mark Morgan (producer) page? 152.179.98.254 (talk) 16:01, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Wikipedia is a public resource for verified, documented information about notable subjects. It is not a forum for people to express their personal feelings toward individuals. Ripoff Report, although it may serve a useful purpose, is not a verifiable source as per WP:BLP. As such, I put the mention of Ripoff Report/Morgan in the External Links section of his article. But it is certainly inappropriate to put that Ripoff Report mention in the lead section of his article. At the most, there could be a "Controversy" section of his bio, where this information could go, BUT ONLY if there were public records, news articles, etc. that discussed the allegations in Ripoff Report. I hope this has been useful. In the meantime, I have reverted the change once again. -- stoshmaster (talk) 18:14, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Kyle Baker[edit]

Hi, Stosh. I always think hard before reverting the edit of a longtime, very responsible editor such as yourself. I did have to remove the High School of Art & Design cite since it was a WP:SELFPUBLISHED work by an author who's not a known authority on the subject ... and also because a google search for "Kyle Baker" and "Art & Design" didn't turn up anything corroborative. I just wanted to let you know my reasoning and that it was nothing done lightly. With regards, -- Tenebrae (talk) 22:38, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Maybe I'll root around more to find a better source. -- stoshmaster (talk) 02:47, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sybil Shearer and {{copyvio-revdel}}[edit]

Hi, thanks for highlighting the copyvio issue on Sybil Shearer. For future use can you please note that we can't revdel just certain lines and you need to define in the copyvio-revdel template the first and last revisions which included the copyrighted text. Here it was reasonably easy to work out (nearly all of them) but in articles with hundreds, if not thousands, of revisions admins might be less than enthusiastic about trying to identify where the violations start and finish. Nthep (talk) 17:32, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Will do, thanks for the explanation. -- stoshmaster (talk) 04:30, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:ChuckPatton.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:ChuckPatton.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:26, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to collaborate on George Klein[edit]

Hi, Stosh. It's been a few years, I think, since I've commented on your talk page, but you're one of the best editors at WikiProject Comics and so I wanted to speak with you about working together on George Klein (comics). The reason I'm asking now is that the biographical material you added last year came from a blog post that in part was based on this Wikipedia article and also was citing primary sources — including for a "George Kline" that the blogger, Alex Jay, claims is the same George Klein.

Blogs by non-recognized authorities can't be used as reference sources, and not knowing anything about Alex Jay or how well-versed a researcher he is, it's hard to gauge his collection and interpretation of primary sources. However, that blog post does provide leads that we can use to track down facts independently. I'd like to do that — George Klein is certainly worthy of the effort — and I was hoping we could work on that together. Aside from, I think, being fun, we can serve as sounding boards for primary-source material and other sources we find. What do you say? --Tenebrae (talk) 19:47, 28 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Tenebrae , thanks for reaching out and thanks for the kind words. Alex Jay is a long-time comics fan (from back in the early days of fandom) and a letterer/logo designer. But I guess he doesn't have any academic standing, so I can see why his blog doesn't count as a verifiable secondary source. At the time, however, I thought his sourcing within the blog post was enough to go on to be citable in Wikipedia. So I guess you're suggesting we go and track down the citations he mentions? I agree it's worth the effort... -- stoshmaster (talk) 17:28, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yer the best. I've got crazy deadlines today and was just stopping by the check messages and such, but I'll have more time to pursue this in a day or so. Don't let me stop you from diving in in the meantime, though!   : )   --Tenebrae (talk) 19:12, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Imperial Guard potential sources?[edit]

I should note that IGN should be considered reliable source enough and I find a lot of info here tags here regarding the fictional team. I am not sure how helpful I can be. Sometimes I wonder if the source even talks about the Imperial Guard or just Sh'iar. So I am letting you check it out. Happy editing. Jhenderson 777 18:52, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, appreciate it! -- stoshmaster (talk) 19:03, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Don't be too discouraged about how the AFD is going, some editors are just very invested in trying to remove as much pop culture material from Wikipedia as they can. They don't always get what they want though - see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Eternity (comics), Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Noh-Varr, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Umar (Marvel Comics), Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Starjammers, and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mindless Ones for some examples. I think you did some good work in rebuilding the Imperial Guard article from scratch, so hopefully it won't be deleted. I say, do what you can where you can, and just as any article that gets kept at AFD can later be renominated and possibly be merged or deleted, an article that gets merged or deleted at AFD can always be fixed back up and restored if the sources are found. A couple of other users I have found to be good at finding these sorts of sources for pop culture fictional elements are User:Toughpigs and User:CarciaNullius, maybe you all can form a club or something. :) BOZ (talk) 06:22, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, BOZ! I appreciate the good cheer. I've never been through an AFD before. How long does it take, and how is the final verdict determined? Is a straight majority vote, KEEP or DELETE? -- stoshmaster (talk) 20:37, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
AFDs typically last for a week, but if opinions are split - as they are on the Imperial Guard - it could easily extend into two or three weeks. A good admin will try to weigh consensus based on strength of arguments, rather than just by counting votes. So one good argument against three poor arguments would weigh more heavily, for example. BOZ (talk) 20:48, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that the article's emphasis on plot summary is bothering a lot of people. Do you think if I cut that way down, it would refocus the article on the WP:GNG parts of it, and thus sway more people? I feel strongly that an article IS needed, but it doesn't have to feature so much plot summary if that's such a sticking point... What do you think? -- stoshmaster (talk) 20:54, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You can definitely try, and I would say that's a good idea and couldn't hurt and would improve the article further. I doubt that would convince most of the current commenters against their delete votes because I think the "all plot" argument is just an excuse, but like I say it couldn't hurt to try. BOZ (talk) 23:45, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like your efforts were good enough to get this one closed as "no consensus" - it's not quite a keep, but at least it's not a merge or delete. Basically, someone could come along and try another AFD at some point but it's not likely that anyone will try again any time soon. I count it as a success in the meantime. :) BOZ (talk) 07:35, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yay! Thanks for the guidance. It seems to me that the "comics folks" are fine with it; it's the non-comics "outsiders" who want to delete delete DELETE! -- stoshmaster (talk) 16:09, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That is typically how that works, yes. Although, not every user who is a fan is also a keepist, and ironically in fact fans who are dedicated to strictly enforcing the WP:GNG can be some of the most ardent deletionists too - but even they have more limits than the people who simply want to limit how much pop culture is covered on Wikipedia.  :\ There seems to be an ever-growing list of those, which means topics like this will be vulnerable when once they would not have been. There are a lot more which have been deleted or redirected, and some probably need to be looked at again because the sources may just be out there. BOZ (talk) 20:10, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Character sources[edit]

Hey hey there! After the more-or-less success with the Imperial Guard, I have been wondering if you wanted to do more. I had previously noted several AFD discussions that closed on a positive (or at least not discouraging) note, but there have been plenty of others that ended in redirection or deletion, so those could always be re-examined to see if there are other sources out there which were not identified at time of AFD. In addition to that, articles are sometimes redirected or deleted without an AFD. If you want to consider giving some consideration to looking into that, I could pull up some of the previous failures on characters with longer publication histories. I only know Marvel characters, to be honest, so I would focus on those, but I'm sure there are DC characters that have gone that way as well. BOZ (talk) 20:53, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I'd be willing to take a look -- stoshmaster (talk) 05:56, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, I will look into that either this coming week or the next week. :) Meanwhile, there are literally dozens of currently existing character and team articles that may be vulnerable to future deletion attempts, which can be avoided if good sources are added by diligent users. :) BOZ (talk) 23:43, 27 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to test that, I will probably wind up merging Fancy Dan and Presence (Marvel Comics) if no sources turn up. BOZ (talk) 05:20, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have started looking at former articles, focusing of course on Marvel characters of which I am most familiar.  :) First of all, if you are looking for a challenge, there is always Leap-Frog (comics) and Sublime (Marvel Comics) at the moment.

As far as others go, many have been redirected or merged, or deleted, either through a formal process such as AFD or another discussion, or simply as a bold action. The bold actions are easier to undo when sources are found, but as you saw with the Imperial Guard discussion, it is difficult but not impossible to bring something back after an earlier AFD. I focused mostly on older characters that have been around for a while, but then again newer characters may be easier to find sources for on the internet.

I went through User:BOZ/OHTMU (which covers the original Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe from the early 1980s) and I found that the following do not currently have articles, with the last good version linked whenever possible:

(I did not explore the final issue of the series, as that one was entirely equipment, and most of them do not have – or never had – articles, and there are plenty of former articles on items noted above, but I will explore those for you if you like.)

A lot of these, realistically, would be pretty difficult to try to rescue. But a few of them may not be so unlikely, so if you see anything there you know you want to give a shot on, let me know.  :) Now, it seems like this is a long list, but keep in mind that the significant majority of items on my list page do still have articles, but as people continue to pursue deletion/redirection, that number will continue to decrease over time. Oh well, we can only do as much as we can do! BOZ (talk) 23:40, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In case you are up for more immediate challenges, there are Doctor Sun, Cat-Man (Marvel Comics), and Ramonda (character) in need of sources, but I won't bother you with anything else any time soon. :) BOZ (talk) 23:22, 7 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on 2022 in comics requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. — Smjg (talk) 15:56, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Big Apple Con[edit]

Hi. I reverted your edit to Big Apple Con. Hi. I know you're a veteran editor, but now you I'm guessing you know that we cannot add information to articles without citing a reliable source, preferably a secondary one. I know you're not the only person who added uncited material to that article, mind you. I went through it and removed some uncited info that's been fact tagged since 2012, and I added fact tags myself to much less, most of it in the table. Thanks. Leonard Rifas[edit]

Thanks for writing an entry about me for Wikipedia. Someone saw it and contacted me today with a research question, so it is already working! I appreciate the care you put into it.

I was glad to see your invitation to submit corrections. I do not know how to contact you privately, do not usually comment on Wikipedia pages, and by the time I realized that this message would be publicly visible on your feedback page, it was already too long. I’ll condense it.

Overall, I was happy with how my entry came out, which perhaps should be no surprise since it seems flattering. I welcome your correspondence at rifas@earthlink.net.

1.      Leonard Rifas […] His publishing company, Educomics, […] [People read “Educomics” as “Economics,” so I renamed my one-man publishing company “EduComics.”]

2.      He has written many scholarly articles […] [Delete “many.” I am not unusually prolific.]

3.      Rifas' first published work, a quarter-page strip […] [My first published mini-comic was Quoz, in 1969. My essay about it (and a reprint of the work) appears in Michael Dowers’ Treasury of Mini Comics Volume One, Fantagraphics Books, Oct 2013. Bruce Chrislip discussed Quoz in The Minicomix Revolution 1969-1989, Gorham Printing, July, 2015, pp. 8-9.]

4.      […] All-Atomic Comics […] went back to press three times in 1976 alone. All-Atomic Comics was translated and published in Germany (by four different publishers)[...] [I published All-Atomics Comics once in 1976 and revised editions in 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980. The GCD mentions three translated editions by three publishers.]

5.      Rifas put together the two-issue Corporate Crime comics series for Kitchen Sink Press, publishing the first issue […] [A little confusing. I did not originally intend it as a “two-issue” series. Kitchen Sink published it, not me.]

6.      […] on such topics as [feminism (and motherhood),[…] [I published a comic on motherhood but not a separate comic about feminism.]

7.      The company also published a number of nonfiction works by Japanese cartoonist Keiji Nakazawa, making Rifas one of the first American publishers to publish translated manga. [I have been credited as the first to republish manga by a Japanese cartoonist in American comic book format: Frederik L. Schodt, Manga! Manga!: The World of Japanese Comics, Kodansha, 1983, pp. 154-155. I published only one nonfiction Nakazawa work: I SAW IT.)]

8.      […] Mama! Dramas, an all-female underground comix anthology about motherhood released in 1978. [They were not only “female,” but mothers.]

9.      […] Energy Comics, also about the dangers of nuclear energy, edited by Rifas. [It had a wider focus than that.]

10.   […] Food Comix/cs, a flip comic anthology about corporate farming. [Again, it had a wider focus than that.]

11.  In 1988, Rifas put together and edited three issues of Itchy Planet, a hybrid magazine of political commentary and editorial cartoons, […] [The political commentary was in comic book format.]

12.  In the 1990s, Rifas transitioned from cartoonist and editor to academic. In 1991, he earned his Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Washington, publishing his thesis as The Forgotten War Comics: The Korean War and American Comic Books[I earned my MA degree in Communications from the University of Washington in 1991. When my thesis was finally published in 2021 (after many, many revisions) by McFarland & Company, Inc., its title had become Korean War Comic Books. My Ph.D. was also in Communications from UW Seattle, but not about comics, so you don’t need to mention it.]

13.  Returning to his creative roots, in 1995 Rifa[s]

14.   […] Tobacco Comics, about the tobacco industry. […] [It was for kids: not about the industry so much as about their decision about whether to smoke. (The comic advised saying “no.”)]

15.  Rifas teaches at Seattle Central College and the University of Washington Bothell. [I have not taught at UW Bothell for years.]

  • The Big Picture — Visualizing the Global Economy (1999) — three young people explain macroeconomics through a series of metaphors; written and drawn by Rifas [“Metaphors” does not get at the originality of this piece. The characters travel through a landscape drawn with a 3D graphics program that visualizes the global economy. I created it to support the protests against the World Trade Organization.]

Using RFD/CSD for possibly-bad redirects[edit]

Just a heads up, if you come across a bad redirect, please consider using either WP:CSD or WP:RFD (whichever is appropriate) rather than, e.g., simply blanking the page, as it can create even more confusion for others. Thanks a million =) --slakrtalk / 10:32, 21 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for File:Sirius-Entertainment-logo.jpg[edit]

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete or generic. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact source (such as the web page, or printed document) where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain, search engine, pinboard, aggregator, or the direct/bare URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. — Ирука13 19:53, 25 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

15-year-old error[edit]

When you created the article on Deluxe Comics back in 2008, one of the sources you cited was an item from The Comics Journal - issue #100, p. 20-22.

As per talk:Deluxe Comics, p. 20-22 of The Comics Journal #100 does not have any such item.

You wrote the citation in a form that implies that you have (or had, anyway) the physical document. Could you double-check your issues? Thanks. DS (talk) 14:35, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note. I have corrected the citation; the source was in The Comics Journal #99, not #100. Sorry for the confusion! -- stoshmaster (talk) 18:18, 7 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
