DYK for Robert Stewart Hyer

Updated DYK query On November 20, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Robert Stewart Hyer, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Your Comments on Rock Valley College

Thank you for your comments on the WP Universities talk page. Could you possibly place the same comments on the talk page in the Talk:Rock_Valley_College#A_review_of_citations_and_suggested_text_for_controversy section for the room to view? It would help to support the notion that the section is too long. Thanks for the input. IlliniGradResearch (talk) 10:01, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Are you planning to take charge of the Wikiproject Report? If yes, let me know how I can help. I'd rather not take the lead on anything for now! --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 03:28, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Reply U of O

Thanks for the query. I dont have much information about fraternities/sorities at U of O. I was going to dive into womens hockey for an article this weekend. Interestingly this article; Ottawa Gee-Gees could partially be merged back into the main article. It would fill out the athletics section. The only real thing wed need are references for most of the facts we bring over. but i could expand a bit of the athletics at the university in my search this weekend as i gather some sources. Ill post as I come accross them, happy editing Ottawa4ever (talk) 11:07, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Wikiproject report

Nice report with useful links calling attention to the various projects! I hope you don't mind but I cut the report lead down and experimented with a new title. Revert at will! Regards. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 20:04, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the copyedit. I like the new title and it looks like the report is ready for publication. Have you decided which WikiProject should be featured in the next report? -Mabeenot (talk) 23:57, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
Next week! I thought I'd have at least a few years before I have to actually do some work! OK. Let me think about it. Perhaps Wikiproject Burma, or do you think that is too esoteric for the rest or wikipedia? Hudson Valley is another alternative. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 03:21, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
Don't worry about having to put it all together for next week. We can work on it together. I just thought you'd like to pick the project. Burma and Hudson Valley may have limited appeal to people outside Southeast Asia and New York, but either one would work. I noticed you're involved with WikiProject Novels which is another possibility. There's also the option of doing a newly founded project like WikiProject Java. -Mabeenot (talk) 22:50, 16 January 2010 (UTC)
I started the ball rolling on Wikiproject Novels. BTW, the Olympics comment was a good one. Perhaps we could time a report with the olympics. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 03:19, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
I agree that we should feature the Olympics project, maybe the week before the games start. The current report seems to be getting plenty of readers, so I think we'll have a good audience for the WikiProject Novels article. Let me know what I can do to help. -Mabeenot (talk) 03:34, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Dinosaurs in the Signpost

Hi. I noticed you're an active member of WikiProject Dinosaurs. Would you be willing to be interviewed for an article in the Signpost? It's quick and painless, plus you'll contribute to some great publicity for the project and articles you've been working on. Also, would you recommend any other editors who should be interviewed for an article on WP Dinosaurs? -Mabeenot (talk) 06:21, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi Mabee,
Yes, I'd like to be interviewed. There aren't a ton of active editors, but I can recommend a few. Firsfron of Ronchester 07:08, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

I wrote some questions for the upcoming Signpost article. Answer as many as you feel comfortable with. Also, feel free to add anything else you'd like mentioned in the article in the section at the end of the questions. Thanks for helping with this article and I hope it brings your project some great publicity and a few new contributors. -Mabeenot (talk) 19:18, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Wikiprojects

Hey Mabeenot. Is there a list of wikiprojects out there somewhere? Maybe? --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 03:30, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

For the most complete alphabetical list (and also the most cluttered) try Special:PrefixIndex/Wikipedia:WikiProject. Alternately, you can look at the WikiProject Council directory which allows you to browse by subject or try the WikiProjects category which includes subdivisions for inactive projects and other things. -Mabeenot (talk) 06:28, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

project tip

Hey- for a future Signpost project interview, it might be interesting to feature Wikipedia:WikiProject Motorcycling. Not because it's impressive, but because it's tiny and mildly active (with maybe 3-5 active users). There are many successes (such as Oregon, which I'm very active in), but Motorcycling presents some large challenges, especially a lack of WP:RS for most of the articles. tedder (talk) 23:20, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

I'll see what I can do ;) -Mabeenot (talk) 06:00, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Report

I would like to apologies on behalf of WikiProject Zoo for this and this mess, a user has taken it upon themselfs to make up titles and pretend to act on WikiProject Zoo's behalf, This user has caused me some trouble in the past and it seems they are again. I understand you have already organised a project to be featured for that week and so i have blanked the page above for your usage. Once again my apologies, i would love for wikiproject zoo to be in the signpost, just not yet. I would like to be able to make the most of our coverage and encourage members to join, we of course cant do this if some novice editor decides to do a half assed job. Sorry for the inconvenience. ZooPro 13:47, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for taking care of that for us. I'll add WP Zoo to the suggestions page and see if one of our writers would be interested in covering it in the near future. -Mabeenot (talk) 14:23, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Desk

Hey Mabeenot, I see you've been really ramping up organisation of the Signpost's WikiProject report - well done, it's awesome! I was wondering if you think it would be a good idea to collate all WikiProject Report planning on a "WikiProject desk", similar to the Opinion desk, Review desk, etc. This way the requests (currently on Suggestions), your schedule table, and any discussion can be kept in one place? Would you like me to set this up for you? — Pretzels Hii! 18:01, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

That would be great! It would also be nice if the new WikiProject Desk included a section or subpage for interviews to be conducted. Thanks for the help. -Mabeenot (talk) 23:53, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

WP Ireland in the Signpost

Hi Mabeenot, funnily it crossed my mind with the last edition that WP Ireland might be chosen some time. I'm not sure how you choose members of a project to interview - there are other editors who deserve great credit for the work of the project to date - but I'd be happy to give my 2 euro cents. -- RA (talk) 10:08, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Do you mind if I join in the interview, even though as RA says, there are more worthy editors around? ww2censor (talk) 00:03, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

UCSD

Hi. Since you left the notice on my talk page about the Universities Collaboration of the Month, I was wondering if there was any sort of centralized discussion for improving the article now that it's been selected, or do we just sort of go at it and do what we can? Cheers, CP 21:01, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Just dig in. Feel free to use the article's talk page for discussion. I know it's been a little quiet this first week, but things should pick up as more editors become aware of the new collaboration. Of course, it's always great if someone could get the ball rolling ;) -Mabeenot (talk) 21:38, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

WP Composers in the Signpost

WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Composers for a Signpost article to be published April 12. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Also, if you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, feel free to share this with them. -Mabeenot (talk) 02:53, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Someone else has already gone ahead and answered the questions. How many people have you asked? How are you going to structure the interview? I think you should know that the project has been pretty much paralyzed by the recent arguments over biographical infoboxes and the shambolic so-called Rfc discussion about them. Maybe this isn't a great time to have a 'buttercups and daisies' interview about favourite composers! (Of course this is 1 April, so perhaps you are having us on anyway . . .) --Kleinzach 06:18, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
As Kleinzach has explained, I have provisionally answered all of the questions, though I would like feedback on the appropriateness of my answers. Would I be allowed to publish this on the WikiProject's talkpage by copy/pasting your post over there and asking for greater input? As further explained above, there are serious differences of opinion to consider, at present. If this isn't the best time to feature the project I will understand. Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Composers/Infoboxes RfC for the context. Thanks --Jubileeclipman 08:06, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
Dear Mabeenot,
Could you please accept our word that this is just about the least appropriate time to do a news article on the Composers Wikiproject? The project has just had an extremely long and unpleasant internal debate, which seems (fingers crossed) to have finally subsided. It would make many of us miserable to have the debate reopened right now as the result of a news article. Believe me, we'd rather spend our time editing composer articles. Yours sincerely, Opus33 (talk) 16:55, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

No problem. We have plenty of other options for the Signpost article, so WP Composers can wait until the controversy has died down. I was unaware of the Rfc (that just goes to show how much we need to improve the flow of news regarding WikiProjects) so I apologize if I reopened any wounds at the project. Let us know at the WikiProject Desk whenever you're feeling the project is fit to be featured. Best regards, -Mabeenot (talk) 18:43, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Gastropods interview

I wil be delighted to fill in the interview! Thanks for the opportunity. Invertzoo (talk) 11:28, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for your message. I will try to participate somehow in the interview. I believe that these project members could provide valuable point of view to the project (sorted alphabeticaly): User:Antarctic-adventurer, User:Daniel Cavallari, User:Seascapeza, User:Tim Ross. Are these really questions that you are interested in? What about: "What can/could be (ideally) changed in the project or in the whole wikipedia to improve the project and articles in the project scope the best or to became your own editing better/easier/more effective/enjoyable?". There is so much things to tell, that I would not be surprised, if somebody would write own article about the project for the Signpost too. You can also ask: "If you could chosen only one article, what article would you recommend for readers of Signpost?" "Do you think, is there any difference between Wikiproject Gastropods and other Wikiprojects?" "Is there anything that can other projects learn from this wikiproject?" And you can be bold when you are asking, for example: "Why wikiproject gastropods have no featured article yet?" Do not forget to put a link to your questionaire at the wikiproject directly. --Snek01 (talk) 17:28, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for the recommendations. I'll contact those users. Feel free to add your response to "Why does wikiproject gastropods have no featured article yet?" to either the question on the project's greatest achievements or the question on snails, pearls, and gastropoda. I've also included an "Anything else you'd like to add?" question for other information you'd like to share. Thanks for participating. -Mabeenot (talk) 19:30, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Hello again Maybeenot, I just wanted to ask you about images. Should we add more or would you rather we didn't? Do you want to give us a maximum number maybe? Invertzoo (talk) 18:04, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
We just started including pictures last week, so we don't have a firm guideline in place yet. Go ahead and add all the pictures you like and I'll cut it down if it becomes too much. FYI, we might move the gastropods interview up to this week. You and the other folks at your project did a great job answering the questions. -Mabeenot (talk) 22:57, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello Mabeenot, will you incorporate my answers to the article, please, if they were published in the same day as Signpost? --Snek01 (talk) 09:09, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

I know we published this particular article a little earlier than we originally envisioned (it was scheduled for May), but once it is published the only changes we make are for typos. We contacted nine members of the project last week, but only three provided answers during the interview phase. Most of the article's page views occur on the first day, so if we altered the article, only a small number of people would see the new version. In some ways, your response on the article's comment section is far better than being mixed with the other respondents since your perspective is highlighted on its own and provides a nice counterpoint to the optimistic answers above. -Mabeenot (talk) 09:37, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Welcome back. I haven't read Shadow Children but it looks interesting. I work for a bookstore, so I'll take a look at it tomorrow. I set up your article's template so all you have to do is insert the interview, intro, and teaser. The deadline for this week's Signpost article is fast approaching, so I hope you already conducted the interview. If you need some more time, I have another WikiProject's interview ready to go. -Mabeenot (talk) 23:41, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject Comedy in the Signpost

Thanks very much for conducting this interview. Those were some interesting questions, and it brings out a good discussion with various avenues of exploration for the readers. Much appreciated, -- Cirt (talk) 15:37, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

GOCE signpost interview

Please note that WP:APPLE had a backlog drive, similar to the GOCE one. If you are interested, please let me know (I ran the thing). Also, you might want to discuss where the Signpost is going; Ragesoss resigned and there are new plans. Cheers, mono 22:40, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing all of this to my attention. I knew the Signpost was flailing about, but I didn't know there was a major restructuring going on or that Ragesoss has resigned. I'll also mention WP Apple's backlog drive in the GOCE article. Would you be interested in participating in an interview focusing solely on WP Apple for July 5th? -Mabeenot (talk) 23:37, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Sure. I'll get participants in there as well. I'm looking into writing a WPreport soon, possibly as an experiment (new format). You might want to include a letter (in the sidebar) about the changes specifically to the WPreport and ask for feedback, like seresin did last week. I could write it if you don't want to. mono 02:59, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
So you know, I've planned two articles which I'll be writing. I had an idea: a system where readers could ask additional questions during the interview. mono 00:55, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
That sounds interesting. Keep me updated. -Mabeenot (talk) 01:45, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Will do. I'm still brainstorming. mono 18:08, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Signpost WikiProject Report

Hi, I slightly reduced the size of the Colbert pic and added to the caption. I hope you don't mind.

Is it possible to widen the news box at the top just a little? It looks very squashy on my monitor. Tony (talk) 12:19, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

That image/caption is fine. As to the size of the sidebar, it is the Wikipedia:Signpost/Sidebar template used by all Signpost articles, so any changes would have to be made to the template. -Mabeenot (talk) 16:10, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

New Development in GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive

Hi, I don't know where to go with this, but I thought you might be a good place to start. Jimmy Wales has signed up to participate in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive (participant #24), after I invited him to do so on his talk page. It would be *huge* for our drive (and therefore really good for Wikipedia) if someone from the Signpost went to his talk page, asked him why he signed up, and then quoted him in an article for the Signpost. The reason I invited him was to boost participation, so now that he's taken me up on it, I'm trying to get exposure... Any suggestions? ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 11:06, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

We still have a couple days until the GOCE Signpost article goes to publication, so I'll add a special question(s) for him and contact him to see if he'll give an answer. -Mabeenot (talk) 17:53, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Covering Photo of the Year on Signpost

I think the Signpost should cover Wikimedia Commons' Photo of the Year. How do I go about doing it. Should I interview the organisers or would just a short story in the news and notes section suffice? Regards--Nilotpal42 04:02, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. We were recently discussing how the Signpost could better cover news from Wikimedia and other projects. This would be an excellent topic to restart our "Sister projects" section. You could write the article yourself or I could conduct an interview with you and some of the organizers. It definitely deserves more than just a news and notes blurb. -Mabeenot (talk) 04:28, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
I may have given a wrong impression, I have noting to do with WikimediaCommons. I am interested in writing for the Signpost and have been taking part in the discussions you mention. I have tried my hand at writing this week's "In the News" section and User:HaeB has kindly credited me for the same. Since I am relatively new with writing for the Signpost, so I thought it would be wise to contact you as well. I have also contacted an organizing member of the photo contest, who seems to be interested [1]--Nilotpal42 04:58, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
The first step is to write some interview questions. At the WikiProject Report, we usually try to find out what motivated them to do whatever they did, what was involved in doing it, how well things went, what mistakes or problems they ran into, and how they solved them. You can create a sandbox page in your userspace to draft and store the questions. Once you've got them ready, invite Miya and any other interested contributors to the page to answer the questions. I can help you with brainstorming questions and I'll set up the Signpost page when you're ready. Here are some previously published interviews that might serve as inspiration. Let me know how I can help. -Mabeenot (talk) 05:22, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
I have set up some questions here. It would be great if you could provide some feedback.Regards.--Nilotpal42 18:49, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
The first question is a little too vague. To help direct their response, perhaps something along the lines of "Walk us through some of the planning for the contest. What preparation took place before it began and how much work was left after it ended?" Aside from that, all the other questions look great, although you may want to reorder them so it feels more natural. I'd recommend this order: 3-4-5-2-1*-6-7 -Mabeenot (talk) 19:24, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

New style

I tried a new style, instead of the Q&A standard, and would like some quick feedback. See here. monosock 22:36, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

I like the expanded intro, including the nice rundown of how each contributor came to the project. You also found a nice selection of pictures, although the captions are a little long. -Mabeenot (talk) 22:48, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
I'll trim the captions. I was planning on continuing a bit, maybe less, with the different style. monosock 22:57, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. monosock 17:56, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Why am I getting this message? Mono's delivery method is random, so you probably showed up somewhere Mono went. :)

Thank you very much for signing up for the July Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two and a half years, all the way back to the beginning of 2008! We're really going to need all the help we can muster to get it down to a manageable number. We've ambitiously set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog this month. In order to do that, we're going to need more participants. Is there anyone that you can invite or ask to participate with you? If so, we're offering an award to the person who brings in the most referrals. Just notify ɳorɑfʈ Talk! or Diannaa TALK of who your referrals are. StarCraft task force in the Signpost

Thanks for inviting me to participate in the signpost, but as I am not extremely involved in the task force I am not able to answer most of the questions. However, in the future if there are other Signposts regarding the PlayStation Project, please tell me as I would be more well-versed in that aspect. Once again thanks for the invitation.KiasuKiasiMan (talk) 08:06, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

To be honest that task force hasn't exactly enjoyed a lot of activity to warrant such attention. Its never really had much success; most of the GAs and FAs under its scope have been improved by random interested editors working together, not as part of a concerted task force effort. The fact that there have only been 12 posts on the talk page (other than those made by me, who put the pages together) in two years and its been inactive for 7 months really speaks for itself. I don't think its really a great topic for an interview, as there really isn't a lot to say. Sorry! -- Sabre (talk) 11:48, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the update. We'll find another project for that week, although we'll mention that the StarCraft task force is in need of members in the WikiProject News section. -Mabeenot (talk) 20:48, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

Hi Mabeenot. One of the backup users for the arb reports appears to have retired, and though I'll be up to date with what I do, on the off-chance that I am unavailable for a particular issue (in which case you'll receive advance notice anyway), would you be OK being the backup? I recall that you were the last time I asked so I've put your name as the backup in the newsroom, but if you can't or don't want to, that's OK too - let me know, or you can revert it accordingly. :) Cheers, Ncmvocalist (talk) 08:35, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

Hi. Since that page only has one respondant so far, I'd like to ask a simple question, would I place my comments after those of the first participant and indent them? Also, when is the deadline for the Signpost publication, so I know how long I have to post my comments? How many participants should the page have? Thanks. ~AH1(TCU) 00:03, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

the Public Policy Initiative Assessment Team wants You!

Hi Mabeenot, welcome to the Public Policy Initiative Assessment Team. I am excited to get started, the discussion of project details will be on the [WP:USPP/Assessment Talk page]. ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 22:10, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for joining the PPI Assessment Team. There is a request for you to review some articles and a description of assessment logistics on the WP:USPP Assessment Page. ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 16:25, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi Mabeenot, recently you signed up to help with assessment on Wikiproject: United States Public Policy. This project is probably different than other assessment drives you have worked on, it involves more assessment of lower ranked articles, it has input and staff from the foundation, and specific goals to improve and measure content of public policy articles. It also involves collaboration from some university classes, we are using an experimental assessment rubric, and most articles will be assessed by multiple reviewers to get a range of scores for each article. It's a lot to digest, and totally understandable if it's not what signed up for. However, there are also some exciting perks to this project: 1) your assessments are part of research that is attempting to increase credibility of Wikipedia in academic circles, 2) there is a great group of assessors involved in discussion of what is article quality and how to measure it, 3) WP:USPP is also piloting the Article Feedback tool, so those involved in assessment on the project will be asked to help improve and rate this tool as well, 4) subject matter experts are assessing articles alongside Wikipedians and comparisons of results will provide some insight as to the rigor of Wikipedia quality rating, and 5) other interesting benefits you will find with participation.
The first group of articles requesting your assessment has been posted. I was hoping to do a preliminary comparison of the data on 8 October 2010. The second assessment request, which is part of the same comparison, will go out about the same time. To help with organization, if you haven't posted any assessment scores on your assessment page by 8 October 2010, I will delete your assessment request and you will not receive further requests. I hope the unusualness of this assessment research does not discourage your participation; if you are not interested working in the research I hope you will continue to assess articles within the project. If possible let me know on my talk page if you don't wish to be a part of the research, or perhaps if there was some confusion or bad communication; what the public policy team, and I, in particular, can do to make it more positive for volunteers. Remember, I am new to Wikipedia and trying to learn the best way to research this project, to hopefully integrate the amazing resource that is Wikipedia onto more university campuses and classrooms. Thanks, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 22:30, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Mabeenot, you signed up to assess with WP:USPP. If you are interested in public policy or assessment, check out your assessment page, because there is a lot happening on the project. Most of the recruitment for the assessment team was specially targeted, so I know you have a lot to offer to the research goals of this project. I posted the second assessment request and there will now be a weekly update on the project assessment page. If you are no longer interested in working on this project, I promise this is the last message you will get, but I hope you decide to check it out. November copy edit drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

I'd be willing to participate, but I defer on the answers to more experienced editors like Killiondude. You can tell him I said that Purplebackpack89 04:58, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Rather Important WikiProject Report Thing

Hi, Mabeenot. I have news. Kind of odd, but the both of us will really have to step up at the WikiProject Desk, as Mono has left Wikipedia. Shocking, he was in my hall of fame. I hope he comes back soon, the desk would've never been the same without his gracious help. He's on my Thanksgiving list.

Thank you for your concern,

Pros & Cons removed

Hi,I'm new with wiki (sorry for that ...) was trying to contribute my advanced experiences as the head of hardware department. I was thinking that pros and cons issue is missing and it is a bit sensitive to be inside the page so external content looks the best way for that. please advice? Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.116.186.29 (talk) 07:52, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Welcome. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a buyer's guide or a comparison site. Furthermore, if the information you wish to add is "a bit sensitive to be inside the page," an external link is no better than including the questionable information in the article. People frequently try to add their personal websites and various opinion pieces to the external links section of articles, which serves only to promote their site and provides opinion rather than fact. See Wikipedia:External links and WP:LINKFARM for more. -Mabeenot (talk) 06:59, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Basketball in the Signpost

Thanks for the invite. To be honest, I think Wikipedia's basketball coverage is generally pretty awful, so I don't know if I'm the person you're looking for. :) Although I've made thousands of edits to basketball articles, my efforts over the last couple years mainly consist of reverting vandalism or cleaning up other messes. Most articles haven't gotten much better on my watch; I'm just trying to keep them from getting worse. Zagalejo^^^ 05:50, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

By the way, I think that the interview should focus more on WP:NBA and WP:CBBALL. WP:BBALL is pretty much a "dead" project from what I know. Disclosure: I am a member of WP:NBA.—Chris!c/t 06:14, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Re: Public Policy Assessments

Hi Mabeenot! Thanks for your note on my talk page -- if you have time, please do go back and do both the first and second assessments. For the first one, Amy selected specific articles for you to review and asked you to review them at certain points in time (July 1 and Oct 1) -- so please use the page history to review the article at that revision point.

For the second one, we opened it up for you to choose from a list of articles, with the version we want you to review already linked. We need at least three reviews of each article, so please choose to review articles that have only one or two reviews done so far.

Finally, I'm releasing a new one today to the team of assessors -- it's similar to round 2 in that it's a list of articles with a specific version linked and you should choose as many articles as you can to assess (ideally 10, but please prioritize the first two assessments over this one, so if you only have time for a couple here, that's fine). Here's a direct link to round 3.

Thanks so much for your help! Let me know if I can clarify anything. --Ldavis (Public Policy) (talk) 17:59, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Mabeenot! Thanks so much for your assessments on the second round -- there are a handful of articles still needing assessments for round 3 as well -- any chance you could assess 3-4 of them in the next week too? Thanks for all your help -- it's very much appreciated! --Ldavis (Public Policy) (talk) 18:04, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Shout-out

I was randomly reading through the old Signpost interview you did for WP:TREK and was struck by what a great piece you'd written from a bunch of long-winded comments and your own research :) Just wanted to thank you for all your hard work keeping us Wikiholics informed and engaged. happy holidays from PPI

Thanks Mabeenot, for all your work assessing articles with WP:USPP over the past few months. I will have some results to report to the assessment team in January. The next semester should be pretty exciting there are over 25 university classes signed up with the project. Your input is helping to gauge how successful the project is, not just at improving the quality of public policy articles, but at incorporating Wikipedia as a teaching tool and recruiting and retaining college students as editors. we still need you in 2011, but it will mostly be assessments of student articles. Currently, there is another round of assessments to look at the improvements students made to their articles. If possible please assess by 5 January 2011; these results will be presented at an international conference later in January! Have a wonderful holiday season, all the best, ARoth (Public Policy Initiative) (talk) 02:21, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
