Steve Davis centuries

Steve Davis's article does mention 355. 355 was an old cuetracker number. Currently cuetracker has 356 so another has been added in the last few years. A more recent article from eurosport https://www.eurosport.com/snooker/who-are-the-top-50-greatest-snooker-century-makers-of-all-time-featuring-ronnie-o-sullivan-stephen-h_sto9072859/story.shtml (from 2022) says "Despite retiring six years ago, six-time world champion Davis remains inside the top 25 of all time with his total of 338 testament to his dominance of the sport during the 1980s." WST itself has 338 here: https://wst.tv/top-ten-break-builders (article from 2020). Also this from The Times (2019, via Newsbank) "O'Sullivan leads way for most centuries Ronnie O'Sullivan Stephen Hendry John Higgins Neil Robertson Judd Trump Mark Selby Ding Junhui Marco Fu Shaun Murphy Mark Williams Mark Allen Stephen Maguire Stuart Bingham Peter Ebdon Ryan Day Ken Doherty Steve Davis Jimmy White 1,000 775 745 621 596 570 498 490 479 460 410 407 400 375 357 342 338 317" So sources differ between the 338 and 355/356. Seems a bit daft to me to use 355 in the Davis article when the source that the journalists have used (cuetracker) is deemed unreliable and especially when cuetracker now says 356. 338 seems a more reliable number to me. Nigej (talk) 10:51, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi! I've been going off these two sources: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/snooker/36034458 and https://www.eurosport.co.uk/snooker/world-championship/2019-2020/snooker-news-steve-davis-i-wasn-t-good-enough-at-game-s-main-skill_sto7742374/story.shtml. You may be right that they were using Cuetracker for these sources, although neither source actually states this. I tend to be inclined to go for the larger number in cases where we aren't sure, but for the life of me trying, no one has ever responded with how these lists are actually compiled. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:02, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
There's another thing in favour of the 338. I think it's widely acknowledged that the current official numbers evolved out of Chris Turner's totals that he maintained until his death on 30 October 2011, at which time he had Davis on 325 (see https://web.archive.org/web/20160506044332/http://www.cajt.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Centuries.htm). Snookerinfo took on Turner's list (https://web.archive.org/web/20120218065003/http://xnookerinfo.webs.com:80) and that site has a final total of 338 at the end of the 2013/14 season (https://web.archive.org/web/20140520142507/http://xnookerinfo.webs.com/100centuries.htm). The 2011 to 2014 period is recent enough that there's no arguing about the 13 centuries after Turner's death. Of course there's no official statement that this is what happened and that the current official totals have evolved out of all this. As you say, even if this is what happened there's no real indication as to where Turner's number came from, perhaps no one knows. (I've changed the s to an x in the snookerinfo links, otherwise the blacklist system won't let me save) Nigej (talk) 16:33, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, perhaps we should denote the disparity with a note? if it was just a single citation using a different figure, I could write it off as a typo, and indeed your value does seem more likely, but it's not 100% to me. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:37, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

Explaining technical terms

This recent discussion has stuck in my mind. I'd like to propose adding some text to the appropriate guideline along the lines of if knowledgeable readers feel that the flow is being broken up too much by inline explanations, non-knowledgeable readers should accept that, and be willing to accept links instead, or, if absolutely necessary, an explanatory note, to quote the phrase used in that conversation, but I'm not sure what the appropriate MoS or editing guideline would be. I know you've run into this issue yourself; where would you think text like that might be added? Is there a guideline that you've had quoted to you that addresses how to write on technical topics? Use of 'nowrap' in F1 Entries table

Hello Lee!

I understand that you consider this use of 'nowrap' not suitable.

If you have a look to the Entries table of the past seasons, the table content for all the columns (eg. Entrant, Constructor, Power Unit, Driver names) never breaks into two or more lines at any display width. This makes sense to me, as this keeps formatting consistent for a rather complex table. With this design choice, the reader will manually scroll the table if there is not enough room for all the content to display horizontally.

This can be obtained either by manually setting fixed column widths or by using 'nowrap' on the longest line of the column (or by using non-breaking spaces, which is not preferable).

As I previously told to Island92, the driver names will be split in two lines, for example, when using the default desktop skin (Vector 2022) with the "limited content width" toggle enabled (and will be split anyway whenever the browser width is shrunk). The content in the other columns will not split, since they are currently using nowrap.

To help getting a better formatting for every reader and to keep consistency with the past seasons, I would like you to consider this technique—or, even better, I would be happy if you could propose a better solution which I don't know to obtain a similar result.

All the best, --Lion-hearted85 (talk) 12:00, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry for the revertion, I'm not sure why, but I randomly put this on the wrong talk page!, but names aren't a suitable use of non-breaking spaces. However, if your table (as it is in this case) can't be wrapped, you can actually denote this in the heading. In that table, the first column has nowrap. We shouldn't use on individual names, if it is the whole table that needs formatting. I've made a change to the page in question, let me know if this isn't what you had in mind. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:19, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
It's worth noting that we should never "fix" items to fit specific screens, other than things being accessible to mobile users Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:20, 5 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi Lee!
Thank you for your response. 5225, Island92 and me were doing edits with nowrap, so you were right to write in their talk page :)
Thank you for pointing me out that nowrap works also if put in the column heading.
Actually, I was seeing the text wrapping in my browser, but I didn't realise that this was caused by my browser font configuration. I reset the browser to the default configuration and it worked as expected. Lion-hearted85 (talk) 17:26, 6 April 2023 (UTC)
Well, that's good. I have a bugbear with improper use of templates like this. It should almost always be done in the header, as the actual use of nowrap is quite limited (maybe for hyphenated words in names, or date ranges etc.) Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:55, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Users JRRobinson and Catb2006

Greetings. In regards to this situation (which you commented on on JRRobinson's talk page), on 30 March JRR left a message on Catb's talk page, asking for off-wiki contact. In JRR's latest block appeal, he states, "And I didn't get someone to proxy edit, I proxy edited myself, I just asked him to create a page". Shortly after that exchange, Catb created 2023 US Darts Masters, again solely sourced to primary sources. You warned Catb you suggested they revert any edits made on JRR's behalf. Not sure what, if anything, should be done. But I thought you might like to know. Onel5969 TT me 10:53, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

I saw it - From my experience of that user, they don't communicate. JRR suggests that he "didn't get someone to proxy edit", which if it were true, would be even worse. I'd probably leave him another warning. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:04, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Ok. But by "him" are you referring to JRR or Catb? Onel5969 TT me 11:49, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Catb, JRR doesn't need a warning, as he's already blocked. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:21, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. That's what I thought, but wanted to make sure. Oh, btw, since they are still appealing their block, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/JRRobinson, might be of interest. Onel5969 TT me 09:03, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Indeed. I shall leave SPI to those who understand it, but thanks for letting me know. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 10:25, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
Sorry to bug you, but I thought you might be interested in this edit by an IP, which I suspect is a sock. Onel5969 TT me 17:57, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Lee, hope you are well - you were kind enough to review one of my Gillingham FACs back in January. Don't suppose you might have a bit of time to look at my latest one, which is struggling a bit? Not to worry if not..... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 20:32, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Slabbath (08:55, 12 April 2023)

Hi Lee, I hope it's ok to ask you a question. I am having issues with COI, I am someone who is documenting opera artists, particularly from Australia. I am a volunteer who does this and is not being paid. My motivation is to improve the accuracy and visibility of the artists. I don't know how to remove the flag for COI. I am trying to add or edit the information that I have found online. I would appreciate your advice. I also have a question about documenting historic information that isn't anthologised online well. I am working on finding citations from Newspaper.com, they don't have live URLs but have reference codes, image codes etc. How do you reference restricted files? --Slabbath (talk) 08:55, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Gerda Arendt might be a better bet in terms of subject matter. If you don't have a COI, then it might be worth talking with whomever believes you to have one. Sometimes it's just because you have additional information, or it's overly promotional.
With newspapers.com, you should be able to make clippings, which you can cite via a url. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 09:28, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
I know more about opera, but not COI so much - being in a similar situation though as doing unpaid pubication work for a church parish - nor about news clippings. I'd ask SusunW about the clippings, and the one assuming COI for that part. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:38, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
thank you! I think it's because I referenced a repertoire list I found on a website called Theapolis that maybe isn't enough of a solid source. I noticed someone created a repertoire list on another page that I had been editing so I wanted to do the same. I think it got flagged because of this. I have deleted it and re-submitted for review. Sourcing for artists isn't always easy as you're cross referencing companies and multi-lingual articles from international newspapers / publications. I will contact user about COI, I have other pages / edits that haven't been flagged the same way. Thank you for the info on newspapers.com! Slabbath (talk) 09:56, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
Slabbath I am probably one of the least wikitechnology knowledgeable editors on the platform, but research I can do. Apparently, using newspapers.com through the WP library platform doesn't allow you to clip articles. You can, however, ask for an individual access which is annually renewable, through them. It has the feature of clipping and getting a link. While you are waiting for access to be approved, you can always ask someone at the WP:RX to clip for you. There are also Wikipedia:Free English newspaper sources, Wikipedia:List of online newspaper archives (other than English languages), and tons of newspaper articles (and old music/opera magazines) at archive.org – don't use the wayback machine search, use the one at the bottom marked Internet Archive, which has a wide variety of languages. Kurt Angle

Hello, Lee. I haven't seen your post asking for help. Good work with Angle. I don't know about freestyle wrestling, but making a quick research, I found this links. Maybe you can use it for citations. [1] [2] [3]. BTW, I also read the Don West article. The Worst announcer award is unsourced. Also, I think the article needs a legacy or influence or reception section. --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 09:39, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

I think you'll struggle to find enough sources talking about Don West as a announcer for a reception section, and any legacy or influence section would be fluff. There's probably many sources talking about individual calls, or individual shows, but it wouldn't really help as that's not really helpful for a bio. If there are sources outside of obituaries which are usually biased out there, let me know. Thanks for the links, I'll check them out. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 10:31, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
