Lee Vilenski, thank you for all the DYK reviewing you have been doing of late. One request: please be sure to use "subst:" when adding any review icons to the nomination template. I already substituted the icon on your review of Template:Did you know nominations/2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final, but figured it would save time to let you know now.

The reason this is important is that the bot that moves approved nominations from the Nominations page to the Approved page doesn't recognize the unsubstituted icon templates as approvals (or whatever status they are), so none of the prep builders will know that the nomination is approved. Come to think of it, the same is true for the bot that builds the Count of DYK Hooks table that appears on both of those pages, so neither know that those nominations are approved.

I'll leave this nomination (and any I haven't run into) for you to complete the approval process by adding the "subst:"; what I do, when I add an icon to a nomination, is copy and paste the icon template from the area explaining the available icons above the editing window—those have the "subst:" already there inside the braces (i.e., {{subst:DYKtick}}), and it saves me some typing (and typoing), too. DYK for Charles Faroux[edit]

On 4 September 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Charles Faroux, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that motorsport official Charles Faroux was also a three-time French carom billiards world champion? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Charles Faroux. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Charles Faroux), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. WikiCup 2019 September newsletter[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. On 5 September 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Kristina Tkach, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Hi Lee, thank you for reviewing this article. Actually I don't remember nominating it for a GA! However, it is a shame that the review was carried out so quickly as I could have answered many of the questions and, if necessary, made improvements. Is it still worth me doing that? It would be better for me to do that towards the end of the month when I have more time. I'd be interested in doing so as I've never run an article for GA and it would be a good learning curve. Bermicourt (talk) 12:43, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bermicourt, I hope you are well! Yeah, I was a little confused, as I couldn't find any other nominations you had done in the past. Definately use the information provided on this and improve the article. Sadly, I feel as though the article would need to be significantly rewritten to pass a GA, more than just the regular updates through the GA process. Feel free to take your time, and re-nominate the article (drop me a ping, and I'll take a look.) Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:07, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019[edit]

Hello Lee Vilenski/Archives/2019,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings.

Flagicon[edit]

Hi, re your revert on 2019 Six-red World Championship, can you point out to me where in MOS:FLAG it states flagathlete should be used instead of flagicon? Apologies, I can't seem to find it and wasn't aware there had been a change. Andygray110 (talk) 20:51, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andygray110! I hope you are well. It has been a big issue recently, it's an issue with both the MOS:FLAG and WP:ACCESS. It has been pointed out in a few discussions that the first viewing of a flag needs more than just a visual representation (thus flagathlete).
the best conversation to read would be at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/2018 World Snooker Championship/archive1 which failed due to these flag issues. Elsewhere, WT:SNOOKER has had some commentary of ghe situation. For much the same reason, we no longer have flags for century breaks, as they are purely decorative, and break MOS:FLAG. I hope thats enough info! happy wiki'ing Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 21:00, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Having read that article I note that it doesn't mention any consensus for flagathlete, nor that the use of flagathlete is explicitly mentioned in MOS:FLAG, hence my surprise at the summary reason for the revert. However I do see in the discussion the issue with flagicon, and the solution you came up with seems a good one. The issue now is that the infoboxes of the new tournaments differ markedly from past tournaments (as they are still using the flagicon template). Is it on your radar to adjust the old tournaments? I can try and lend a hand if so. Andygray110 (talk) 21:15, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Andygray110 It is on my to-do list; but I am super deep into content creation for the Wikicup final round. Realistically, I need to update the MOS for this, but I suspect I'd need a new consensus and wording to do so, and I simply do not have the time to do it.
if there is a better way to do this, I am all ears, however, we should follow our featured content and MOS. If you would be willing to do some updating for this, I would be greatful. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 21:21, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, if I have the time I'll give it a go. Good luck in the cup! Andygray110 (talk) 21:23, 12 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Who are you?[edit]

To think that you can decide what the content of my talk page is supposed to be? You also want to come and decide which furniture I should have at my home? --Sb008 (talk) 07:41, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well, clearly the conversation you was having was regarding information that had already had a consensus at FOOTY, so I would have thought you would have wanted to follow this and gain a new consensus. If you weren't looking to do this, the conversation is moot. I'll leave it alone, as it's clear you do not want to gain any consensus on this. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 07:48, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  1. You can copy things from my talk page, you can link to items on my talk page, but you do not delete things from my talk page unless it's one of you own contribution or you consulted me on the matter. How would you like it if I would come and organize your talk page to my liking?
  2. You claim there's a consensus, in other words there is a standard for league pages. Does this mean you're refering to this? If so, let's have at the first sentence on the page "This page is part of the WikiProject on Football and is a proposal for the general style and contents of an article on a league season.". Proposal indicates it has no real status. Furthermore, even if it would be a standard, let's look at the most relevant statement in the stats section "The inclusion of this section is not decided yet". That line actually says there's no consensus on stats data. Frankly I would define the whole page as immature and incomplete.
  3. Or is this supposed to be the consensus? A quick exchange of unmotived opinions by a select few within a time period of less than 48 hours. You yourself call it WP:FANCRUFT. From my earlier posts you can see that 3 major sites consider this kind of data relevant enough to include in the standings table. To get an idea of how well my team will do in their next match, I'm more interested on how the oppononent is ranked and how well they performed in the last few matches, than who is their kit manufacturer. If according the proposal for the general style and contents of an article on a league season, the kit manufacturar is cnsidered important relevant imformation which is of interest not only to a small population of enthusiastic fans, but to the general public, there isn't much left which possibly could qualify as WP:FANCRUFT. Maybe you should consider listing the tattoo artist of players as well.
  4. As far as I'm consider the module Module:Sports rbr table represents far more a standard than an immature proposal or unmotived opinions of a select few. In general the purpose of templates and modules is to simplify common practices.
  5. You can join HawkAussie in the mission to get the module Module:Sports rbr table removed. Information "we" don't want on pages, should surely not be facilitated by modules to do so in an easy way.

I'm sorry if I upset you - the information has been returned to your talk page by your own undo, and I won't touch your page again. The additions for general round-by-round table for a league this size, is in my opinion, a ridiculous addition of stat-cruft. I think that the information should be discussed at FOOTY, as this is where we would get the best input, and where the conversation should be; and it would be wise to add your own opinions as above there. However, if you would like to raise these points at that destination, I would be obliged, as my talk page is not a suitable venue for this. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 10:08, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you had put the part "The additions for general ....... at that destination" on my talk page with the addition "so I'll copy this discussion to the FOOTY page, it had been perfectly fine with. I don't mind the discussion being moved there, I mind you deleting stuff on my talk page. And on that kind of behavior I address you on your talk page and not on FOOTY. Furthermore, if you clain in your response there's an existing consensus, I dispute that claim over here. I only came here to address you on your behavior regarding my talk page, not to discuss the results table. You connected the two issues by using a consensus on that issue as defence for your behavior. --Sb008 (talk) 10:38, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

1984 World Snooker Championship[edit]

Hi again. I've added to 1984 World Snooker Championship - hopefully mainly good stuff. It would probably benefit from a once-over from you. I do have a bit more (or lot more for later stages) info on particular matches from another old copy of Snooker Scene, so might add some more later. Hey there. I see you withdrew the 2016 World Snooker Championship GA review. Did I overanalyze something in the review? Please let me know for future reviews. Thanks for all your work! :) --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:30, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not really MrLinkinPark333, it's up to you to make sure you are happy with the article before passing or failing. I simply withdrew as I wasn't happy with it, and I'll probably do a full on re-write at some point to fix the issues. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 22:42, 21 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah okay. No worries then @Lee Vilenski:. For me, the longer the article, the longer the review. But since you are not happy with the article currently, you now can decide when and how long you want to work on the article. :) Feel free to renominate it whenever you are happy and feel like it. I didn't get a chance to finish the recap of what's left, but hopefully you can get a gist of what's left.
