British & American spellings

I'm not really interested in warring over them, but what's going on with Pan-African colours and Pan-Slavic colours? Both were originally started under "colors" and do not concern specifically British topics. I believe the changes were made before the current rules in the MoS, but the MoS does clearly state that this change is "unacceptable" right in the intro. Motto of the day

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

I've explained my rationale in using the image on the image talk page. Quite simply, it's an image covered by Crown copyright which, at the time that I uploaded the file, was acceptable to use in Wikipedia. Furthermore, there is currently no free image that we can use to illustrate the subject - all other images I found were newspaper-produced private pictures. Right now, the only image for Johnson Beharry is an image of the VC medal - there is no image of Beharry himself. If the choice is between a British Crown Copyright image or no image, I'd say the British Crown Copyright image is preferable. Don't worry. It's not about being disheartened, discouraged, or being "driven away" from Wikipedia. I'm practically retired from Wikipedia now (not from any one single event), but I've had my work ruthlessly critiqued enough for me over the years to be used to it. It's the ever-changing bureaucracy on Wikipedia that's annoying. While it can be necessary in some cases, nothing is more contentious and ever-changing than images and BLP. Let me know where I am wrong. When you remove a fair use image from its only mainspace use, it will be automatically deleted about a week later. The original uploader usually gets notified, but if he doesn't notice, and page watchers don't notice, the image will be deleted without review. This time, the removal was noticed before the image was deleted.

Sure, the deleted image can be undeleted, or re-uploaded, but only by someone aware, interested, and with effort to spare.

Given these issues, I think, as a general principle, a more formal discussion (WP:FFD) should be required to have the image deleted than just a small edit by any editor.

This image is not just any old image. It is the image of the subject on the day of the award, an award that most prominently makes the subject notable. The image looks to be the closest thing to the an official image. There is no evidence of other photos, or likelihood that the copyright holder will release copyright before it expires. Another image of the individual sure exists, or could yet be created, but the interest here is not in the face of the individual, but in the awarding of a VC, and for that, no subsequently created image can be said to be a comparable replacement. Is there some formal definition of "irreplaceable" that I should know? --SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:46, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Allocation of seats in the chamber for the 31st Dáil

Hi Kwekubo. I created a seating diagram today for the newly-elected Dáil personnel, as shown on the right. The style differs from yours, particularly in my arrangement of the seating to resemble more closely the actual layout of the Dáil chamber itself. I based my design directly on an official diagram from Leinster House. I don't think yours is a poor diagram at all, I just introduced more detailed, informative changes based on the official picture, in that Wikipedia-evolving way. When the numbered seats in the Dáil are officially allocated to individual members, I will be able to adjust the colour coding in my diagram to show exactly who sits where in the chamber.

User:Snappy thought the result of my work so far was "brutal" (as in ugly). He changed your older diagram and used that derived work to replace my effort. We have just had a tedious wrangle about the whole thing during which he said he had "in a sense" collaborated with you and that you preferred your diagram to mine, so I was "in a minority", as if a bigger gang decides aesthetics. I see from your contribution history that you have not edited Wikipedia under your own name for almost two weeks, either to collaborate on work with Snappy, or to state to him a judgement on my work

Well, since my name is being taken in vain, I'll give my side of the story, rather than have someone else do it for me.

I gave my frank opinion on O'Dea's efforts, yes I called it brutal, harsh maybe but that's my opinion. I don't like the fact that it is literal and has empty (white seats) which is confusing. The Dail chamber has more than 166 seats but representing unused ones is plain daft. Its supposed to be a representation not literal, as in the way the aisles are unnecessarily represented. See the 112th United States Congress for examples of representational disgrams, not overly literal ones. The Ceann Comharile is the wrong colour (yellow), even though its always been black on wikipedia. The United Left Alliance are shown there constituent parties even though in the {{Irish general election, 2011}}, they are shown as one party. Also, I see no good reason for an editor to create a new image which a perfectly good can be modified instead.

I had already created a new image for the 31st Dail derived from your one for the 30th Dail. O'Dea just got their first to adding it to the articles, so it wasn't a response to his effort as he implies. Obviously, its not a question of which diagram is better, as different people will have different opinions on which is a better, more informative, pleasing image.

I did not as O'Dea claims "imagine" your opinion. The only opinion I have is my own, I don't speak on anyone else behalf, and O'Dea claims that I did are misleading to say the least. I wrote "Since I and Kwebuko prefer this version..", (written in a hurry) but to clarify what I meant was that since I used your image to derive my own, then you would probably like the derived work since its the same layout/colouring/design as your original one, a bit of leap but not a huge one! Yes, I was indeed "in a sense" collaborating with you, as I used your original work, that is then essence of Wikipedia editing. One doesn't need advance permission (the derived work duly credits your original one), or to have discussed it before hand, as O'Dea implies.

I don't think there is much merit in comparing images, although I see O'Dea has asked your opinion, be kind or else they'll have another hissy fit! Since I called his effort brutal, he most of the entire evening haranguing me, and I jokingly suggested that he harass you instead, I didn't realise he would actually do it! Anyway, if we three (and any other interested) editors can agree on one image that best represents the parties strengths in the 30th Dail, that would be great. The Ceann Comhairle is presently yellow in my diagram because the job is not yet assigned, so the party identity is unknown — one blue or red deputy will come out of the existing seating to fill that desk. The yellow can change to black in a split second of colour fill editing activity — just one mouse click — when the Ceann Comhairle is appointed, just as the other seats will be adjusted when exact seating arrangements are known.

I have not implied that anyone "needs advance permission" to work with your file; that is not what I wrote. On the contrary, a couple of days ago I was studying your file intending to do precisely what Snappy did later, but in looking at how the seats may be arranged in the new seating plan, I was using the official Dáil seating diagram, and it inspired me to choose a new structure, judging the more literal layout to offer better and clearer party and individual location information. Indeed, using the more exact diagram, one can get better insight into electronic Dáil voting since the seats are allocated to individual deputies and the literalness will be more explicit and, thereby, offer more information within the encyclopaedia, which is our goal.

If anyone is curious about white seats or anything else, the answer is just one click away, where I provided a clear description and legend in Wikicommons when I uploaded the file, one that Snappy respected enough to copy for his own later work. This discussion really does not belong on this Talk page; it just wound up here. Anyway, I am still interested in your thoughts, Kwekubo. — O'Dea (talk) 02:14, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

The unassigned seats are confusing and should not be in any diagram. The image should contain a representation of party strengths, not be overly literal with empty seats, aisles etc. If you wanted to be really accurate, then you should put all the unused seats in the very front row where no one sits except on state occasions. I agree that this discussion should be on the Members of the 31st Dail talk page and not here. No one likes their talkpage to be cluttered with tedious discussions. First I must apologies for forgeting to log in for that edit - you should contact me further under Whimsical Eloquence. The term is certainly no longer used - either by the University itself, something I note in the article. The term is both an apt description of the perscribed dress and I've seen it used numerous times in print to refer to the dress. Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Kwekubo. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Renua Ireland in the Oireachtas

Hello, I noticed that you reverted my edit to the Dáil Éireann diagram because Renua Ireland is not yet a Dáil grouping. I have followed this by doing the same to the Seanad Éireann diagram I had edited. SVUH name change

Hi Kwekubo, I saw you changed St Vincent's University Hospital from "St." with a full stop to "St" - is that for Wikipedia format reasons? The SVHG and SVUH official logos include the full stop.

Hi. I checked the SVUH website before making that change and noticed that usage is confused throughout, sometimes using the full stop and sometimes omitting it. I do see that the logos seem to use it; feel free to move the page back if you prefer. --Kwekubo (talk) 20:36, 5 June 2016 (UTC)
